About the author

Mamdouh Sakr is a British/ Egyptian architect and Islamic architecture historian, who is addicted to travel. In addition to his academic research, he wrote four travel books published in English, (Did you try Qat? 2012, Spaghetti in Harar, 2014, From Cairo to Tel Aviv, 2015 and Namaste 2019). Where he gathered his experiences and encounters in a number of countries.
Then by the beginning of 2016, he began writing in Arabic, a he wrote a slightly different version of, “From Cairo to Tel Aviv”. This book is a bit special as it tells his journey to Palestine, where he visited Jerusalem, al Khalil, Bethlehem, Acre and Jaffa. His wanderings are woven by long conversations with Palestinians living under different circumstances, some are funny, some are heartbreaking and others are simply intriguing.

ممدوح صقر هو معماري و مؤرخ للعمارة الاسلامية و مغرم بالسفر. ولد في جلاسجو باسكتلندا عام 1976. بالاضافة الي عدد من الابحاث الاكاديمية فقد قام بكتابة اربعة من كتب ادب الرحلات باللغة الانجليزية

و قد ضم بهم خبراته و الاحداث التي مر بها من خلال اسفاره المتعددة. و في بداية عام 2016 خاض اول تجربة للكتابة باللغة العربية في كتاب " القاهرة... تل ابيب" وفيه تناول رحلته لفلسطين و زيارته للقدس و بيت لحم و الخليل و عكا و يافا. و امتزجت مشاهداته بحوارات عديدة مع من قابلهم من الفلسطينيين.

It's a beautiful travel journal, I loved reading this book. This is my first time reading about Palestine outside the scope of politics. Also, the photos at the end of the book displaying different places and landmarks was wonderful; because they display the other faces of Palestine, the ones we don't get to see on TV. I really hope that one day I can visit Jerusalem.

Besides being a fine travel journal, From Cairo to Tel Aviv is a beautiful reminder of an old dream...to go to Jerusalem, see Palestine, meet its people and have this whole situation figured out. Whatever we hear on the news or read in newspapers, I tend to believe the reality of the Palestinian situation is a whole other story that can't be figured out until one is a part of it, even if it's for a few days.
And for that, I give Mamdouh Sakr a sincere hats-off for taking the brave decision of going there, exploring the Holy Land and its stories despite all the eye-rolling, the condescension and the patronizing accusations of naturalization and treason.
Thank you, Mr. Sakr, for sharing the amazing, emotion-packed experience and for reviving an old teenage dream!

وقعت في حب هذا الكتاب ..
وكيف لا وهو يحكي عن مكان يمثل لي كل العشق والقداسة والصمود ، فلسطين الأبية
فالكتاب أسلوبه بسيط ونقل كاتبه التجربة بمنتهى السلاسة فجعلنى اشعر اني اشاركه رحلته " يا بختك يا سيدي 😅
وكانت اجمل أجزاءه وأكثرها متعة عندي هو البداية ثم القدس وفي النهاية يافا ، اما الحوار الذي نقله الكاتب كما هو بلسان قائليه وبلهجتهم الطروب المحببه فكان الاروع على الاطلاق والذي كنت ابتهج ما ان اصادفه في قراءتي ..

خلاصة القول : الكتاب يستحق القراءة واني ارجو أن يتيسر لي الأمر واحط بأقدامي يوما على هذه الأرض التى شهدت ولا زالت تشهد الكثير من المآسى على مدار التاريخ

بجد استمتعت بالكتاب ده بشكل مش طبيعى! حسيت انى عشت ف كل حتة الكاتب راحها، وعجبنى قوى العين الناقدة اللى شاف بيها الأمور، وإحساس الانتماء والحنين لفلسطين كلها...
اتغظت جدا من شخصية حسن بتاع عكا، بس زى ما تقول ربنا عوضنى على طول بالحاج أبو إياد 🥰😻..حبيت شخصية أبو إياد جدا...
عجبنى قوى الحوارات باللهجة الفلسطينية الجميلة، وترحيب كل الناس بالشخص المصرى فى فلسطين⁦❤️⁩.. أنا شفت ده بعينى فى غزة 😻..
يمكن الحاجة الوحيدة اللى حسيتها ناقصة فى الكتاب كانت تفاصيل ما قبل الرحلة وما بعدها، يعنى راح إزاى ورجع مصر إزاى، إلخ، عشان الواحد نفسه يعمل حاجة زى دى..
يا ريت لو الكاتب شاف الريفيو ده يرد عليا ويقول لى عمل إيه..
أنا سافرت غزة وبيّتّ فبها ليلة، بس ده كان فى فترة استثنائية من تاريخ مصر، إنما حاليا السفر للضفة ممكن يبقى أسهل لو فيه ترتيبات معينة وده اللى عايز اعرفه..
أنصح أى حد عايز يشوف فلسطين الحقيقية بالكامل يقرا الكتاب ده 🥰

Well, this is my first time to read a travel journal. So, I might not be fair enough in rating it!
I know I'm always attracted to anything about Palestine and I pray that one day I could visit this country where I have roots in. Reading this journal was interesting, so easy and page turning. Not only I was interested in description of the places, but actually I was more interested in the traveler's perplexed feelings; of his trip, timing of the trip, people he met, places he saw, etc. in brief, reading this book was a nice experience.

It is a must read book. It is a travel journal with a nice photos of the visited places at the end.
In my opinion the book has achieved two important issues, firstly reminding us of the Palestinian case from the eyes of normal human not a politician or a religion person and gave us a glimpse how the life going on in Palestine.
Secondly the book raised the question if visiting Jerusalem is helpful for the Palestinians or it is kind of neutralization with Israel?

It was a nice book and not hard to digest, giving many nice pictures during the short timed travel to Israel/Palestine....I liked the book from its shinny and upbeat cover.
What remains difficult not to mention is that from the title having the name (Tel Aviv) on it, and the British citizenship that the author have let me expect more liberal and pragmatic opinions about the historic Palestinian issue, I was staggered to see that the writer had the same unrealistic enthusiastic Arab ideas about this issue, denying any Jewish right of being on that land, even disparaging and despising the Arabs who chose to live peacefully inside Israel. I mean he criticizes that the Jews came from far away countries to settle in Israel, without acknowledging their long history of struggle and their suffering and oppression from all the surrounding nations that led to their dispersing. History has a wheel that goes round and round, how can the writer forget that most of the lands that are now called the Arab world where actually stolen from its people by the Arabs coming from Arabia in the name of Islam and its Conquests!! Forcing everyting on them from ideas, religion and culture until this day....

An interesting, not your average, travel book, where the itinerary is shockingly bold, due to the political and ancient rivalry between Egyptians and Zionists.
Personally, I got very emotional and moved. While I cannot quite explain my feelings as eloquently as the author has, I definitely got caught up in the same moral dilemmas and choked on the same ideologies.

As much as I have loved the book, and couldn’t put it down till I’ve finished it, I would have loved the photos and illustrations to have been clearer and to have been enclosed within the respective pages for a richer experience. Also, I would have loved to see more pictures of the art in the museum and of the French Artist.

I 've just finished reading this book and I loved it!
It's very interesting & eye opening. If you want to get the real picture of what's happening in Palestine, hear the simple truth from ordinary people and not politicians, see how palestinians are living their everyday lives. You should definitely read this.
I don't know if we'll ever get a chance to visit Palestine, but I guarantee you, you'll get to see it through the eyes of an Egyptian author Mamdouh Sakr.
I highly recommend it. Its worth your time!

the author spent most of the book describing Al Aqsa mosque. he uses terms like Israeli and Zionist interchangeably. the book ends abruptly, starting to narrate a conversation with 2 interesting characters and then decides to end the book on a negative note.
the book holds a lot of immature emotions.

كتاب قصير بيوصف الكاتب فيه رحلته للقدس بتفاصيل بتخليك تعيش التجربه كنت اتمنى لو قدر يزور الضفه و لو كان الكتاب اكبر

❞ شعرت برغبة عارمة في البكاء, البكاء نيابة عن كل فلسطيني، أبكي نيابة عمن فقد الأرض و العائلة، وعن الذين فقدوا أنفسهم.. ما هذه الرحلة شديدة القسوة و الميلودرامية؟!، كنت أطارد سراباً كل هذه الأيام, أتأرجح بين اليأس و الأمل ❝

❞ قد نكون مررنا بأطلال الطنطورة!, ولكن من سيهتم؟! فآلاف الكتب و مواقع الانترنت مليئة بقوائم المدن و القرى الفلسطينية المدمرة, كما يحفظ مئات الآلاف من اللاجئين أسماء و مواقع قرى أبائهم وأجدادهم, هذا ما نجيده حقاً, الشجن و الأسى والتشدق ❝

Beautiful documentation of a travel to Palestine. Description of the little details of the masjids there and different touristic places. I never thought it was a touristic place, so thank you for showing that as well :).
Also, the experience itself of how people live there and the obstacles they face daily, we needed to be reminded of that. It ended abruptly though, I kinda thought there would be more details about the trip going back home.

Okay here we go…

This book is one of sincerest pieces of writings I have read. The book is extremely simple. Do not expect to read something that would blow your mind. Yet, definitely expect to cry a couple of times.

An Arab traveler, a normal Egyptian individual, went to visit Palestine and had to come across occupation, resistance, hope, and loss, all at one land.

The paragraphs convey so many raw emotions, one could feel they were there going with him through that journey.

All I was thinking about reading that book is: “Oh how I wish I could hold every Palestinian’s hand and tell them they are the bravest”.

Jerusalem is a world of its own. It is some where between heaven and earths, a place between piety and pragmatism.
بهذه الكلمات يصف الكاتب القدس، بعد ان حار كثيرا في كيفية وصفها،

بداية؛ كتابنا هذا من أدب الرحلات، ولاننا في وضع ثقافي مخزي (والحق، بدون نقطة) فلا يوجد ادني اهتمام به علي الرغم من تراثنا الملئ بالاعلام ممن تميزوا مثل بن بطوطة وناصر خسرو وحتي رفاعة الطهطاوي وغيرهم، ولذلك لا ادري سر سعادتي ألانه من ادب الرحلات ام لانه يثير الشجن بالحديث عن القدس وبعض مدن فلسطين.
استدراك.: لا أعلم ان كان هذا الكتاب قد ترجم إلي العربية أم لا. فإن كان لا (فبجملة عدم الاهتمام بفلسطين أو ادب الرحلات)

انتبهت كليا لاسم الكتاب حينما كنت ابحث عن الجديد من الكتب، من الذي سيغادر القاهرة الي تل ابيب خاصة ان الكاتب ممدوح صقر يظهر من اسمه انه مصري.
بالفعل الكتاب مصري مولود في اسكتلندا، الكاتب يورد الحجة تلو الأخري علي زيارة فلسطين من خلال الحدود الاسرائيلية للوقوف بجانب فلسطين واهلها ودعمها اقتصاديا وكذا الصلاة في المسجد الاقصي، هذا وان كنت اتمني زيارة القدس، لكنني لا استسيغ طبع الباسبور بختم اسرائيل هذا من ناحية.

ومن ناحية أخري، فان فعل فلا اعلم كيف استطاع زيارة تل ابيب، بعد كل الشجن عن زيارته للقدس والخليل وبيت لحم وغيرها من المدن الفلسطينية، هل لان يافا اصبحت جزء من تل ابيب( وهذه معلومة جديدة بالنسبة إلي). ولكن علي كل يظهر من الكتاب ان الكاتب مصري (جدع وبن بلد) ومولع بالسفر والاستكشاف.


في مقدمة عظيمة يذكر الكاتب فيها مشاعره بشأن القضية الفلسطينة وانطباعه عن الحركة الصهيونية منذ كان طفلا (حينما كانت كل المساجد تدعو لنصره فلسطين علي الصهيونية) الا ان يصل الي سؤال لما نتعاطف مع فلسطين ولا نتعاطف مع السكان الاصلين في امريكا (كمثال) بنفس درجة تعاطفنا معها، فيري انه ربما يكون الانتماء او حتي الروابط فيما بيينا.
والحقيقة انه لسؤال جد هام لما نبكي علي فلسطين اكثر من بكاءنا علي المضطهدين في كل مكان.

ثم يورد الكاتب مصاعب دخوله الي القدس من قبل ضباط الاحتلال، الاستغراب البادي لانه مصري مسلم يريد الزيارة او السياحة فقط.

ومن ثم يبدأ الشجن، هنا نري فلسطين واهلها كما لم نراها من قبل، نري ونستمع للاخبار لكن لا يحدث احتكاك مع اهل فلسطين، لا نستمع لمعاناتهم معيشتهم احلامهم بؤسهم.

بقلب محب للاقصي تفيض دموع الكاتب حينما يصلي في الاقصي، الخالي من المصلين (هل حجة الكاتب صحيحة يجب علي المسلمين زيارة الاقصي حتي نمنع او علي الاقل نصعب مهمة الصهيونية في تهويد الاقصي؟!)

لا اريد الاستفاضة حتي لا اظلم كلمات الراوي، التي تستحق ان تقرأ، لكن سنشاهد القدس بشوارعها وحواريها القديمة العريقة، الخليل ومقاومتها،المستعمرات، مخيمات اللاجئين، حيفا الفقيرة، وعكا الساحلية الجميلة.

وعي الفلسطنين، معاناتهم اليومية مع جنود الاحتلال، حياتهم. ساكتفي بمثالين ازعم انهم يلخصوا ايمان الفسطنين بقضيتهم فقد وجد الكاتب علي احدي الجدران بمخيمات بيت لحم هذه العبارة
Beware I'm the son of a refugee camp
ايمان كل من في المخيمات بحتميه الرجوع يوما، بضرورة انتصار الحق يوما، فكيف ولماذا ومن أين جاء اليقين؟

وثانيهما أبو محمد، صاحب الكاريزما، نحتت شمس فلسطين وجهه وطلتها بالسمره المحببه للنفس، المؤمن بحتميه البقاء وان فلسطين ستظل لاهلها دوما، حينما ساله الكاتب ماذا سيحدث ما يتوقع فاجاب مازحا اذا كان هم شعب الله المختار، فنحن من خلقنا لنعذبهم ونريهم الوان المضايقات
They claim that they are God's chosen people, don't they? "Well then, we are the ones God chose to tease his chosen people"
فهذه هي فلسطين، الارض والسماء حتي بيتي فلسطيني علي الرغم من انهم لا يبعدون ٣ امتار عنا، لكنا كانت وستظل فلسطين.

The book was a painful experience , it accurately described the guilt and sadness felt by me as in Egyptian towards Palestine situation …also showed me different forms of resistance by the Palestinian people , and glimpse into their daily struggles and mundane activities that requires an effort to be done
I loved the conversations with people and their jokes that took them out of the political bloody perspective that we are constantly shown which was eye opening .

Well the last part was much better, it was good to read about how Palestine looks from the inside, but unfortunately my expectations were different, i expected more descriptive explanation about both Palestinian and Israeli’s places, somehow the whole book was biased and judgmental. Moreover i was wondering what is it with the used vocabulary, it was like reading one of Jane Austin’s old books, hey let’s talk about the curtains and the table for four pages.

Well written and describing all the details with the eyes of an architect made It easy for me to visualize what the writer was talking about. The best thing was keeping the photos to the end.
