Omg I finally finished this book and I enjoyed it ! It takes place in a small village in Rural Quebec . It starts in 1948 and ends in 1957 . The main Character is Paula who is 9 years old . Her mother Rita who is pregnant with her 5 child is not in good health. She is ill . She delivers the 5 child and then is very ill with Tuberculosis. So she is sent away to
A sanatorium for people that are ill with the same thing . In those years people were sent away that had tuberculosis so not to infect family members and to get well too . But many people die with that sickness. Rita is able to visit her family at Christmas but has to go back after New Years . Paula who is 10 when her mother leaves has to take
The place of her mother! That means cooking , cleaning and washing the clothes! And going to school at the same time and on top of that she has very good grades . Rita her mom stays about 3 years at the sanitarium but her health turns for the worst and demands to die at home . Paula now has more responsibilities so she decides to quit school at grade nine . Along the way she has boyfriends . And gets a job working in
A factory where they make shirts. Her
Dad remarries a woman that the children like and accept Paula who is Seventeen near the end of the book meets the handsome Gaëtan which looks really serious. I loved Paula. She was a strong little girl that
