The Complete Navigator series This omnibus edition of the Navigator series contains all four books: Enemy Lines, Blind Sighted, Killer Edge and Broken Arrow.
With hydraulics, armor and advanced vision, Navigators are soldiers of the future, and in the game of survival of the fittest, they become the only hope man has to fight for their right to dominate.
Enemy Lines After nearly being executed in a war zone, Staff Sergeant Leon Shield finds himself urgently recalled from deployment, and lands back home to a defeated country. In a matter of days, and without a single shot being fired, a new species has taken over the world. Determined to survive Armageddon, the only chance to fight back is to find a man called Ark, and use an untested technology to become Navigators.
Blind Sighted Leon and Ark elect to train their new Navigator squad outside the wire, while Bill works with the weapons engineers to solve the bigger problems. The medical team are taking the critters apart, desperately looking for anything that will give them an edge.
Killer Edge Our team match the enemy by creating a little critter magic of their own. New forces join them, and survivors add their weight to the fight, further changing what becomes possible. First contact is made, and believing they are running headlong into failure, Ark learns to take the lesser loss.
Broken Arrow The aliens take a step too far and Ark decides it's time to go all in. Sending all of their Navigator battle teams to the nests, they uncover unexpected allies in a final showdown that will determine which side will rule earth.
Despite being four books, each is relatively short and easy to read. This is sci-fi "comfort food". If you want a break from the "grind" (think Banks) and just enjoy some fast paced light reading then this is a good place to go. The storyline is interesting, the characters are diverse and interesting; and the development of the arch-enemy ("critters") has originality. It didn't change my sci-fi world, but I enjoyed it none-the-less.
This book is not horrible... it is too long and tends to overlook important details in favor of filler. The concept is good but this book is lite on the Science part of Science Fiction. MINOR SPOILERs AHEAD You find yourself wondering why a hunting rifle cannot kill the bad guys but a 50 cal hand gun can (look up the energy charts); other weapons are developed and and mentioned several times only to be discarded with one sentence (time to discount does not match the number of times and the context it was mentioned) MAJOR SPOILER AHEAD: The end is the part of the book I have the most trouble with and I find myself feeling cheated (like a publisher dead line was due so we'll just end it here). If there are hundreds of nest and the one near Albuquerque is not the only big one, then what about the rest of the world? What about all the other ships over cities partly loaded, and HOW did 3.5 Billion badass semi-indestructible aliens loose to less than a 1000 people (in fairness an explanation was offered but it refers to the "Big Nest" theory). Finally, how did the one person described as... smart but no one would ever follow him because he is an ass... get to be the head dude for the whole world? Save your self the time and read a different book.
Fast paced action with interesting take on humanity
Not a great read, but not too bad either. It’s a little like a B action movie. Easy to read and a good way to pass a few hours in what’s a pretty interesting take on alien and human conflict and military tech. The story lacks some of the detail I’ve come to love in these epic tales but there’s more than enough there to keep you turning the pages.
If not for the tenacity and cunning of an odd collection of eccentrics and misfits. Nicely conceived and executed story even if I did hear “dour” ten times too many. Plausible apocalypse from within our DNA sets an interesting stage for world domination. Colorful characters provide lots of mini plot lines. Nicely done!
Very imaginative storyline turning half of mankind into maniacal killers and then into super strong, nearly indestructible bugs to herd the survivors into city sized camps. One last hope survives ... Calitech has Navigators. All they need is an army to put in them and kick some alien ass. Well worth a look!
An excellent story! I love the character development, plot, imaginative world building and alien creation. I was completely engrossed in the story line. Very professionally put together; a very nice aspect of being self published. Thank you Tanner for a very well written story. Keep it up. You do us self published authors an excellent compliment.
Surprisingly good. A cheap on spec buy. When I first started, it felt crass, gung ho type of stuff and a bit cliched. However, as I read further, character and story development got better and whilst it took a while to get through an enjoyable read with good imagination behind it. Worth a try, but if you’re sensitive to macho posturing, possibly not your thing.
This is a good, easy read. Not too taxing but fast paced, with a good narrative and very interesting story. Not every book or series is going to be an SF masterpiece, but I don't believe this was the author's intention. It's a bit of indulgent Sci-Fi fun, so if you feel you need some indulgent science fiction, try it.
I picked up the 3 digital books for a buck. I was pleasantly surprised. I enjoyed them very much. Best entertainment value I've come across in a long time.
Was skeptical about this series. I figured it was a Halo imitation. I was pleasantly surprised as this series stands alone and comes from a totally different angle. Definitely a good read and a good value.
Good read. I read it as a Kindle edition and it would have been helpful if the author used an indent for new paragraphs so you could tell when the speaker was changing. In some spots it slowed the read a bit.
I thought the series started off all right, but it seemed to me that the plot kept repeating basically the same theme over and over again. I eventually lost interest and went on to other books.
It is just not the type of books that I enjoy. I didn't finish the first book. Nothing personal. I will check for others books from SD Tanner in Science Fiction.
Really enjoyed this series of books telling the story of a zombie-like apocalypse in a real-time narrative style that switches between a large set of characters who narrate each chapter in turn. By reading each character's story, bit by bit, from their different perspectives, we piece together what's happening and progress through the tale.
There are parts towards the middle where the progression gets a touch bogged down in the minutae of military tech, but broadly speaking, the pace is pretty good.
What I also enjoyed is the quality of writing, the craftsmanship is a delight. I still remember a little phrase, irrelevant to the bigger story, of someone trying to clear a memory from his thoughts by shaking his head like an etch-a-sketch, and I can viscerally feel that movement! There are many little gems like this that make for a very vivid writing style.
That can be a slight curse during some of the very gruesome early chapters, but in truth it's a real pleasure in reading these books.
I gave this series 5 stars due to it being extremely entertaining, and well written. I loved the cool, not too far fetched tech, and weapons. There's also a lot of bravery, and self sacrifice, in a brutal, post apocalyptic world.
The books really portray the indomable human spirit, and our species refusal to go silently in the night. As a reader of many science fictions, I would recommend this series to any science fiction fan.
