He is the sixth person among eight recipients of the Jnanpith Award for the Kannada language, the highest literary honor conferred in India. In 1998, he received the Padma Bhushan award from the Government of India and in 2013, he was nominated for Man Booker International Prize.
Ananthamurthy's works have been translated into several Indian and European languages and have been awarded with important literary prizes. His main works include Samskara, Bhava, Bharathi Pura, and Avasthe. He has written numerous short stories as well. Several of his novels and short fictions have been made into movies.
Most of Ananthamurthy's literary works deal with psychological aspects of people in different situations, times and circumstances. His writings supposedly analyze aspects ranging from challenges and changes faced by Brahmin families of Karnataka to bureaucrats dealing with politics influencing their work.

ಇಲ್ಲಿಗೆ ಅನಂತಮೂರ್ತಿಯವರ ಸಮಸ್ತ ಕಥೆಗಳನ್ನು ಒಮ್ಮೆ ಓದಿದ ಹಾಗಾಯಿತು. ಅದು ಆಗಸ್ಟ್ 2021, ನನಗೆ ಕೊರೋನಾ ಸೋಂಕು ತಗುಲಿತ್ತು. ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿನ ಭಯಗ್ರಸ್ತ ವಾತಾವರಣದಲ್ಲಿ ನನ್ನ ಜೊತೆಗಿದದ್ದು ಅನಂತಮೂರ್ತಿಯವರ ಕಥೆಗಳು, ಅವರ ಕಥನ ಜಗತ್ತು ನನಗೆ ಇಲ್ಲೆಲ್ಲೂ ಕಾಣದ ಅನುಭವವನ್ನು ದೊರಕಿಸಿ ಕೊಟ್ಟಿತ್ತು. ಆದರೆ ಒಂದೇ ಗುಕ್ಕಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಎಲ್ಲ ಕಥೆಗಳನ್ನು ಓದುವಂತ ಕಥೆಗಳಾಗಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ, ಸಾವಧಾನವಾಗಿ ಓದುವಂತ ವಸ್ತುಗಳು, ಹೀಗೆ ಸಮಯಕ್ಕೆ ಒಂದಷ್ಟು ಕಥೆಗಳನ್ನು ಓದುತ್ತಾ ಓದುತ್ತಾ ಎರಡು ವರ್ಷಗಳ ಮೇಲು ಸಮಯವನ್ನು ಮೀರಿ ಇಂದಿಗೆ ಮುಗಿಸಿದ್ದೇನೆ.
ನಾನೊಬ್ಬ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ ಓದುಗ, ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯದ ಅಭ್ಯಾಸಿಯಲ್ಲ. ನನ್ನ ಓದಿನ ಮಿತಿ ಬಹುತೇಕ ರಸಸ್ವಾದಕ್ಕೆ ಮೀಸಲು ಮತ್ತು ನನ್ನ ಓದು ನನ್ನನ್ನು ಆಂತರಿಕವಾಗಿ ಬೆಳೆಸಿ ರೂಪಿಸುತ್ತಿರುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂದೇ ನಂಬಿ ನನ್ನ ಓದನ್ನು ಬಹು ಜಾಗ್ರತೆಯಿಂದ ಆಯ್ದುಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತೇನೆ. ಹಾಗಾಗಿ ನನ್ನ ಓದಿನ ಮಿತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕೆಲ ಲೇಖಕರು ಕೆಲ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ ಪ್ರಕಾರಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಸಾಧಿಸಿದ ವರ್ಚಸ್ಸನ್ನು ಇತರೆ ಲೇಖಕರು ಏರುವುದಕ್ಕೆ ಕಷ್ಟಸಾಧ್ಯ. ಉದಾಹರಣೆಗೆ : ಕುವೆಂಪುರವರು ಸುಂದರ ನಾಟಕಗಳನ್ನು ರಚಿಸಿದರೂ, ಗಿರೀಶ್ ಕಾರ್ನಾಡರ ನಾಟಕಗಳ ಮುಂದೆ ಒಂದು ಹೆಜ್ಜೆ ಹಿಂದೆ ಬೀಳುತ್ತವೆ, ಹೀಗೆ ಕುವೆಂಪುರವರು ಕಾವ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಸಾಧಿಸಿದನ್ನು, ಕಾರಂತರು ಕಾದಂಬರಿಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಸಾಧಿಸಿದನ್ನು ಅನಂತಮೂರ್ತಿರವರು ಕಥಾಪ್ರಕಾರದಲ್ಲಿ ಸಾಧಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ ಎಂದು ನಾನು ನಂಬಿದ್ದೇನೆ.
ಹಳ್ಳಿಗಾಡಿನ ಪರಿಸರದಲ್ಲಿ ರಚಿಸಿರುವ ಕಥೆಗಳಂತೂ world class, ಕಥೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾಣುವ human complexity ಅದ್ಭುತವಾಗಿ ಧ್ವನಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಸೂರ್ಯನ ಕುದುರೆಯ ವೆಂಕಟನ ಜೀವನ ಪ್ರೀತಿ ನಾವು ಜೀವನವನ್ನು ನೋಡುವ ನೋಟವನ್ನೇ ಪ್ರಶ್ನಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಎಲ್ಲ ಕಥೆಗಳು ಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠ ಎನ್ನುವುದು ಕೂಡ ತಪ್ಪೇ, ಕೆಲ ದುರ್ಬಲ ಕಥೆಗಳು ಇವೆ. ಅವು ದುರ್ಬಲ ಕಥೆಗಳೋ ಅಥವಾ ಇತರ ಚಂದದ ಕಥೆಗಳ ಮುಂದೆ ಸಪ್ಪೆಯಾದವೋ ತಿಳಿಯದು.
ಒಟ್ಟು ಕಥೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ನನಗೆ ತುಂಬಾ ಇಷ್ಟವಾದ ಕಥೆಗಳು - ಸೂರ್ಯನ ಕುದುರೆ, ಘಟಶ್ರಾದ್ಧ , ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆ, ಮೌನಿ, ಕ್ಲಿಪ್ ಜಾಯಿಂಟ್, ಹುಲಿಯ ಹೆಂಗರಳು, ಕವಿಯ ಪೂರ್ಣಿಮೆ, ಅಕ್ಕಯ್ಯ, ಪಚ್ಚೆ ರೆಸಾರ್ಟ್, ಬರ
