About the author

Stephen Richard Turnbull is British a historian specializing in eastern military history, especially the samurai of Japan. His books are mainly on Japanese and Mongolian subjects. He attended Cambridge University where he gained his first degree. He currently holds an MA in Theology, MA in Military History and a PhD from the University of Leeds where he is currently a lecturer in Far Eastern Religions. He has also written a number of books on other medieval topics. He is semi-retired but still holds the post of Visiting Professor of Japanese Studies at Akita International University in Japan.

Dnf na 100 stronie bo mam wrażenie, że nie uczę się niczego nowego. Książka na pewno dobra dla osób, które nie wiedzą absolutnie nic o samurajach - dla mnie lekko nudnawa.

Edit: przekartkowałam pozostałe strony i trochę doczytałam - trzy gwiazdki dalej zostają

Samuraylar küçük yaştan itibaren Japon kültüründe ilgimi çeken en önemli olgu olmuştur. Hangi film olduğunu hatırlayamamakla birlikte samuraylar ile ilk tanışmam televizyonda anne ve babam ile birlikte izlediğim bir film ile gerçekleşmişti. (90’ların güzide çocuklarına selam olsun) Bir samuray demek onur ile eşleştirilmek demekti. Babamın ilk söylediği şey buydu; samuraylar çok onurlu olurlar. O filmde gördüğüm samurayın kıyafetleri, konuşması ama her şeyden öte yürüyüşü beni kendine hayran bırakmıştı. Her şeyinde bir sükûnet, her adımda bir zerafet vardı. Bir erkek nasıl olup da bu kadar zarif gözükebilirdi anlayamamıştım doğrusu ancak samurayın sakin tavırları beni benden almıştı. Sanıyorum ta o zamanlardan sükûnetten yana bir arzusu var gönlümün.
Yıllar geçse de samuraylara olan bu ilgim devam etti. Çok değerli birisinden hediye olarak aldığım bu kitap benim için adeta biçilmiş bir kaftan. Samuraylığın tarihçesi görseller ile birlikte harika bir şekilde harmanlanmış. Eğer okurken bir yandan bir şeyler araştırmayı seviyorsanız bu eser tam sizlik.

Sahaftan aldığım bu hazineyi biraz gençliğimden kalma Japon tarihi merakım, biraz kaliteli baskısı için edinmiştim ama içeriğin bu kadar dolu olması beni olumlu anlamda şaşırttı. Japonların bu popüler ama bir o kadar da derin sosyal sınıfının tarihsel evrimi, kültürel kodları, Japon tarihindeki anlamını dörtbaşı mamur anlatan ve hiç de hafif bir dile sahip olmayan bir kitap. Son kısımdaki Satsuma İsyanı ise, Son Samuray efsanesini detaylandıran nefis bir kapanış olmuş. Meraklısı mutlaka okumalı

Leidykla Briedis vienu metu išleido dvi panašaus pobūdžio knygas. Viena apie vikingus, kita apie samurajus. Pastaroji man pasirodė išsamesnė ir kokybiškesnė. Panašu, kad išliko daug japonų istorinių šaltinių, nes net tam tikri trylikto ar keturiolikto amžiaus įvykiai aprašomi gana detaliai. Knyga gausiai iliustruota. O žiūrėti į japoniškas pilis iš vis pasaka.

testo non impegnativo e scorrevole anche per chi non vuole un vero e proprio saggio, racconta anche la storia vera dell'ultimo samurai a cui si sono ispirati (romanzandolo alla hollywood) per il fim con tom cruise

Sto unendo lo studio della Storia del Giappone a quello della lingua giapponese per avere un quadro più completo. Il nome di Stephen Turnbull è quello più ricorrente quando si ricercano rinomati storici occidentali esperti riguardo il Paese del Sol Levante.
Ho comprato quindi su Amazon questo volume di 200 pagine circa (molte di foto e immagini) sulla figura del Samurai. Il libro copre diversi aspetti della vita del samurai concentrandosi soprattutto nei periodi di nascita della classe dei samurai e del suo pieno sviluppo nel periodo Sengoku, toccando argomenti quali il look, le armi, la vita quotidiana, la vita in battaglia e il rapporto con la morte. Il tomo, che credo non esista in italiano ma potrei sbagliare, risulta completo e interessante per quanto riguarda l’analisi della figura del Samurai, e può essere uno stimolo per avvicinarsi alla storia del Giappone e un buono spunto per aggiungere libri da leggere sull’argomento (ho aggiunto almeno cinque libri in wishlist leggendo questo).

Nota a parte per l’edizione, hardcover, veramente pregevole. Sovraccopertina molto stilosa, il volume fa anche bella figura in qualsiasi libreria, e visto il prezzo irrisorio (pagato 7 sterline in offerta su Amazon UK) risulta un ottimo acquisto.

Samurai are something I've always been curious about and found visually striking but they are kind of an obscure topic in the US. With the exception of The Last Samurai, there's few movies about them and no TV shows that I can think of. So what I'm really saying is that, it isn't easy to learn about them if you don't know where to look and this book is a great place to start.

I knew only a little about samurai and Stephen Turnbull did a great job explaining unique aspects of Samurai culture like their weapons, armor, and harakiri/seppuku. There was also some nice information about important battles and moments during the samurai period like the Mongolian invasion. This book is a pretty easy and fast read as a result of the interesting subject matter. There are also lots of beautiful images of samurai and their castles in the book as well. Many are old woodblock prints but there are modern drawings too and both serve to bring to life this period of Japanese history.

All in all, this was a strong introduction to this topic and it won't be the last book on Samurai or by Stephen Turnbull that I will read.

istediğimi bulamadım. gönül isterdi ki buşido yolunu seçen bir samurayın roninliğini olarak savaşını görseydik. Bir de seppuku yapsın dile benden ne dilersen. Nitekim öyle olmadı. Bu kitap 'teknik' bir kitap. Tarihi bilgi yönü ağır. Bir sürü abidük gubudik isimli adam var kafam karıştı. Nobunaga var bir adam sanırım. Neyse ama samuray düzenine yetiştirilmesine de değiniyor. Kitap çok fiyakalı dursa da düzenlemesi 'rezalet'. Okurken zorlandım. Resimler zaten konuyla alakasız verilmiş kavramlar havada kalıyor. Cümlenin devamını okumak için sayfa değiştiriyorum, arada ek bilgi anlatan bi sayfa koymuşlar??? tekrar atlıyıp cümlenin sonunu okuyorum. Sonra ilk sayfaya dönüp resmin açıklamasını okuyorum. En son 2. sayfaya gidip ek bilgiyi okuyorum. Anlayacağın biraz sıçmışlar. Nitekim uğraşılmış bir kitap. Daha güzel işler çıkabilirdi ama olsun kaliteli samuray kitabı yok bu da bir şey. Design hatası yapmasalar güzel gönülleri için 4,5 verirdim. Ama 4,5 yok. Yine 4 verirdim yalan yok!

Really informative book. Covers a lot of topics relating to all aspects of samurai life, equipment and history. A good primer for anyone that has an interest in the history abs lie of this Warrior class.

Well written, if brief, read. Interesting and it does open your eyes about the nature of Japanese warfare which wasn't exactly like the films showed (even a lot of the Japanese ones).

I wish it was longer as I enjoyed that.

Įdomi ir neblogai atskleista tema (tiesa, vietomis norėtųsi kiek daugiau analizės ir paaiškinimų), bet tikrai prastokas lietuviškas vertimas. Vietomis norėjosi paklausti vertėjo, ar jis pats suprato, ką norėjo pasakyti.

Dr. Turnbull is an expert in Japanese history, yet he’s able to condense a variety of salient topics into a book that is brief and yet still has a lot of depth. Such topics include the imperial regalia, seppuku, gunpowder weaponry, fortifications, and more. In each section, Turnbull provides sufficient context for the reader to understand what’s happening without overwhelming them with dates and locations.

This is a great way to cover some of the less known aspects of samurai culture in a way that does not simplify the historical facts.

Ar žinojote, kad samurajai mėgo puošti savo šalmus papjė mašė ir dažnai jie primindavo bene meno kūrinius? Šie kariai be garbės ir savo šeimininko neįsivaizduodavo savo gyvenimo, todėl turėjo bent tris priežastis, kodėl buvo verta pasidaryti sepuku t.y. nusižudyti persipjaunant pilvą. O samurajus netekęs šeimininko būdavo praminamas roninu.
Samurajai visuomet žadino mano susidomėjimą, o perskaičiusi šią knygą tik dar labiau jais susižavėjau. Tai be galo atsidavę kariai, kurie vertino ištikimybę savo šeimininkui. Jiems garbė buvo svarbiausias dalykas, todėl verčiau jau būtų mirę nei jos netekę. O laisvu laiku jie mėgdavo kurti poeziją. Ši knyga buvo tikrai išsami, o ir informacija pateikiama suprantamai, pasitelkiamos iliustracijos, jog žmogui nė neįsivaizduojančiam kaip atrodė to meto Japonija, taptų ai��ku. Vienintelis šios knygos minusas buvo tas, jog joje gausu japoniškos terminologijos. Jos nevertimas sveikintinas, nes dažnu atveju vartojamos tokios sąvokos, jog į lietuvių kalbą tiesiog nepavyktų jų tinkamai išversti, o galbūt mūsų kalboje net neegzistuoja tinkamų alternatyvų. Tačiau skaitydama jaučiau, jog ganėtinai greitai tarp tų sąvokų pasimetu it būčiau atsidūrusi gūdžiame miške ir nebežinočiau kaip išeiti, nes nesusipažinusiam su jomis žmogui viskas tampa ganėtinai sudėtinga. Visgi jų tikrai nevertėtų išsigąsti, nes šitai tikrai netrukdo suvokti pačios esmės.
Tad visi ką žavėjo ir žavi samurajai sukluskit, nes ši knyga puikus šaltinis, norint artimiau susipažinti su sudėtinga, bet kartu ir be galo įdomia Japonijos istorijos dalimi.

Good overview of the lives of the Samurai, with an emphasis on the Sengoku Jidai (Warring States Period) of the 15th and 16th Centuries. Stephen Turnbull highlights the history of Japan during those centuries and the evolution of the Samurai class, along with the physical and philosophical development of elite Japanese society. He concludes with a discussion of the end of the Samurai class in the late 19th Century in face of modern warfare based on professional, mass armies. A big part of the appeal of this little book are the illustrations, which are fantastic. There are both period and modern illustrations of Samurai life and photographs of various castles, all of which add a lot of life to the narrative.
