Fed up with being taught evolution in class? Get the answers to fight back with Help! I'm Being Taught Evolution in my Biology Class! Styled in the manner of emailed questions from a student with responses from Kent Hovind, this guide will help students work through speaking up in class, using strategies of attacking the evidence presented for evolution (rather than evolution itself), discover tips on when to ask questions, and memorize Biology-specific questions to ask teachers. Focusing on "observational science" and casting evolution as religion, this guide to respectful confrontations will give creationist students a manual for consistently bringing up their concerns in the classroom. This book refers back to the first volume, Help! I'm Being Taught Evolution in my Earth Science class and builds off some of the principles referenced there.
Kent E. Hovind (born January 15, 1953) is an American young Earth creationist and conspiracy theorist. Hovind has spoken on creation science and has aimed to convince listeners to reject scientific theories of evolution, geophysics, and cosmology in favor of his interpretation of the Genesis creation narrative from the Bible. Hovind's views are contradicted by scientific evidence and some of his ideas have also been criticized by young Earth creationist organizations such as Answers in Genesis.
Hovind established Creation Science Evangelism in 1991, and frequently spoke on young Earth creationism at seminars at private schools and churches, debates, and on radio and television broadcasts. From January 2007, Hovind served a ten-year prison sentence after being convicted of 58 federal counts, including 12 tax offenses, one count of obstructing federal agents, and 45 counts of structuring cash transactions. He is incarcerated at the Federal Correctional Institution at Berlin, New Hampshire. He was released in 2015.
Though the book is great and the content is awesome. This book does have the potential to have your kid fail if they are in a secular school. Not because of the content in this book, but because they will not write the answers from their own textbook on the test because they will personally not agree with it. This would be a disaster. Make sure your kid reads this when they are old enough to be smart enough to know when to argue Creation vs evolution and when not too.
A DIALOGUE BETWEEN A HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT AND A PROMINENT CREATIONIST
Kent E. Hovind is a “Young Earth” writer, lecturer, and debater, who was imprisoned from 2007–2015 for tax evasion, etc. This 2011 booklet is a [fictional?] e-mail “dialogue” with a female high school student named Amy, who contacts Hovind about concerns about what her teacher is saying in Biology class.
Hovind explains in the Preface, “I taught high school math and science for fifteen years before beginning the ministry of Creation Science Evangelism in 1989… Our award-winning… video series shows clearly why the earth cannot be billions of years old, how dinosaurs always lived with man, why Adam lived to be 930, how evolution is being taught using over fifty lies as ‘evidence,’ and much more. It is my prayer that this book will arm students, teachers, principals, and parents with the knowledge to fight against those lies and get our schools back to teaching real science… Buy this booklet by the case and give one to every student and parent you see!”
He says of origin-of-life experiments, “One big problem the theory has is with oxygen. Probably the [textbook] says that the earth had a ‘reducing atmosphere.’ This means the air had no oxygen. They have to believe that because any amino acids that formed would have been quickly oxidized otherwise… Life can’t even get started ‘evolving’ with oxygen present. However, the problem with leaving out oxygen is that ozone is made from oxygen; so there would be no ozone layer to stop ultraviolet light … Since ultraviolet light destroys ammonia (one of the key gases that they need), there would be no way life could get started without oxygen.” (Pg. 9-10)
He asserts, “there is no ‘fossil record.’ There are trillions of fossils, but they are not found with a date or tag on them. Someone with a preconceived idea of evolution puts his interpretation on them.” (Pg. 16)
He argues, “The page you sent from your [textbook] shows a cow with an extra leg as an example of a mutation. Cows already have the genetic info to make a leg. Adding a new leg is not new info; nor is it helpful to the cow… All known mutations cause a DECREASE in genetic complexity, not an increase. The mutant is always less likely to survive in the wild. They may say bacteria becomes resistant to drugs (which is true), but that is because there is a loss of info in the bacteria. And that kind of bacteria is weaker than other bacteria, when the drug is not there. Also, it is still bacteria, not anything else.” (Pg. 19-20)
Of suggested “vestigial organs,” he comments: “a. The human tailbone is the anchor point for nine little muscles needed to support the colon, anchor the end of the spinal column… b. The whale does not have a pelvis. Those bones are anchor points for special muscles used during reproduction… there is no fossil evidence for loss of legs in whales. c. The spurs on the abdomen of some snakes are also used in mating… They are not remnants of legs! d. The human appendix serves as part of the immune system today. It’s true you can live without it. So what? You can live without both of your arms… That doesn’t prove you don’t need them!” (Pg. 32)
He says of Archaeopteryx, “Archaeopteryx had flight feathers, not reptile scales… There is great evidence that it is fake… Even if it is genuine, it is a crow-sized bird teeth in its beak. Several birds today have teeth and it proves nothing.” (Pg. 40-41)
He outlines, “I believe that 4,400 years ago … there was a big Flood that destroyed the entire world… A man named Noah built a huge boat and saved two of every kind of animal on board. I emphasize the word ‘kind’ for them. I will say, ‘There are millions of species on earth today, but only about eight thousand basic kinds of animals. So Noah had about 16-20 thousand animals on board.” (Pg. 45)
Hovind is, of course, controversial even within the “Young Earth” community; but this booklet will be of interest to those wanting simplified arguments against evolution.
