I crave oblivion. I need to feel numb more than I need my next breath because I can’t take the guilt gnawing at me for the death of my best friend, my other half.
I’m not the one who stole his last breath, but it could have been me. I’ve been drowning in my addiction and wallowing in my own misery since the day he left me.
But I’m turning it all around. I’m leaving the drugs and alcohol behind me. All with the help of Ryan, my saving grace. The one who can put me back together. But, will I only bring him down, or will he save me?
My name is Avery Bennett, and I am an addict. I’m in love with a ghost, but my heart is being stolen by someone I never saw coming.
Trigger Warning: This book goes into detail about alcohol and drug abuse.
Something about the description of this book made me decide to take a chance. Probably because I'm no stranger to the world of addiction. Not me, personally. Just people who have been in my life at various times. The book's portrayal of addiction and the long road of overcoming it is pretty much true-to-life. The storyline was a good one. Reading through the book, I kept thinking it was a solid 3-star for me. Until I got closer to the end and it bumped up to a 4-star. I never felt completely in touch with the main character, and I'm not sure why. Ryan was a blessing to Avery, and he often seemed to be a little too good to be true, but he was pretty awesome. There were a few editing issues. Nothing major. Sweat for for sweet, a forgotten or extra word here and there. But I know firsthand what it's like to edit a book until you're blue in the face, so I won't hold it against the author. Overall, a good read.
Jane Escaping the Edge by H.M. Sholander exceeded my every expectation and what I thought I would get I got plus everything more! This is Sholander’s first ever novel and I’m telling you now…she is definitely up there with the best, this is no amateur and I’m giving this read 5 heartbreaking and loving stars! Facing real-life struggles and feeling every emotion from happy, sad, anxious and breathless, it would be one of my top reads of the year! Avery Bennett knows firsthand what addiction does to a person. Having grown up with alcoholic parents, her mum who would take her anger out on the child Avery, sometimes denying her of food as punishment for not getting her beer fast enough or for her father’s misdoings. And her father, a mean man who physically abused her mother and when that wasn’t satisfying enough would also include Avery. Avery swore she would never be like her parents but unfortunately, her future path had already been created and paved the way to the same sort of fate. Avery was off the rails. Addicted to alcohol and cocaine she would constantly drink and drug herself to oblivion, blaming the stresses of work for her demise. Grayson her bestfriend and on-again, off-again boyfriend, would plead with Avery to get help, but she refused to admit she even had a problem, living in denial. Not being able to handle watching Avery destroy herself any longer, Grayson said their relationship was done, causing Avery to spiral even further out of control. That was until she lost her bestfriend to a drunk driver of all things, numbing herself with the drugs and alcohol for weeks on end, not even being able to remember her best friends funeral, Avery knew she had to get help and make it up to the one person she constantly let down, she had to do it for him. Attending an AA meeting, she sat there in a daze listening to some of the peoples stories but not actually hearing what they were saying, until a guy got up and spoke about living with his alcoholic father, how he attended these meetings for 7 months staying clean in that time, eventually losing, but wanting people to know that these meetings actually did work. Being nominated a sponsor, Avery was introduced to Ryan Jackson, the young guy who spoke about his dad. Ryan helped Avery over the coming weeks, over the worst of her withdrawals and doing really well, Ryan was showing her there was more to life than alcohol and drugs, and even though it was obvious there was a mutual attraction between them, they developed really good friendship, Ryan telling Avery she wasn’t ready for more. Being clean for nearly two months until certain events took place which sent Avery backwards and turning to old devices to cope, she hurt the ones close to her including Ryan. Not being able to watch Avery hurting herself, he told her he would be there for her when she was done. Avery didn’t care, she needed to block everything out and this was the only way she was ever going to be able to get over the loss of her bestfriend. With the alcohol not having the desired effect she once thought it did and ashamed at her behaviour as well as letting down Ryan, Avery knew she had to get clean, but this time she knew she had to do it for herself, not anyone else. Attending the next AA meeting she decided this was it. If she was going to get clean she needed to do things differently. Standing in front of the group and telling her story, she felt like the weight of the world had been lifted off her shoulders! Ryan approaches Avery after the meeting telling her how proud of her he was and he was there if she ever needed him. Avery was getting her life back and becoming the woman she once was. Having made peace with herself and having Ryan back in her life felt right. They both knew they were brought together for a reason and knew they were destined to be together, but that’s where the story ends. Ryan and Avery’s characters, as well as the supporting characters were very well developed. The author really gave the reader in-depth knowledge of who they were and what they were feeling/experiencing, whilst still getting on with the story. This book didn’t end with a cliffhanger but it did leave me hanging. With the next series due early 2017 I can’t wait to see what the future holds for Ryan and Avery!
I’m going to be a fan for many books to come and can’t wait to read more of her work. Bravo!
Escaping the Edge (Edge Book 1) written by H.M. Sholander. This is my first read from this Author. H.M. Sholander did a great job on this book. The story was well written. The two main characters. Avery Bennett and Ryan were great characters. Avery is an addict, she lost her best friend Grayson, to a tragic accident. She loved him very much. She can't handle what happened, the pain is too severe. She can't stop blaming herself, even though she had nothing to do with the accident. One day, she finally comes to terms, she isn't to blame and she needs help. So she goes to a meeting, where she meets Ryan. Ryan is at the meeting, because he has an alcoholic father, he's trying to find a way to help his father. Ryan understands what Avery is going through and wants to help her. Ryan feels an instant connection to Avery. I think Ryan and Avery are perfect together. They both have gone through so much in their lives. This story is filled with so much emotions. Ryan and Avery have a great connection. They have great chemistry. Ryan is the best thing that could happen to Avery. This is a great story. I really enjoyed it. I recommend this book. Beware! You will need a box of tissues. I'm looking forward to reading more from H.M. Sholander. I can not wait to read book two to this series. 5 Stars. Thank you, H.M. Sholander. Great work on this book. :)
Escaping the Edge by H.M. Sholander is the first book in the Edge series. H.M. Sholander is a new author for me, so I wasn’t sure what to expect. Also, this book deals with alcoholism and drug abuse which is very close to my home while growing up. I knew I was going to be a bit harder on the author because of this. I want to advise anyone who has triggers for alcohol or drug abuse please think carefully before reading.
This book takes you on a journey with Avery, who is an addict. It takes her through her binge drinking, snorting cocaine, partying, and the inevitable downfall. The rock bottom that always seemed like it would never touch her. Until it does. She loses someone very close to her, and it causes more of an undoing in her life. She blames herself but still allows the sickness to consume her. Until she decides to get better, for the one she lost.
Here is the point of the book where i’m like “don’t do this, don’t have her get better for someone else. It’s not realistic” Like I said, I was going to be pretty hard on the author.
Avery does very well for a couple months, life happens to her and she decides she wants what the alcohol and drugs gave her. To be numb. Even though she’s been attending AA meetings and has a sponsor that is a godsend, she still relapses.
Most people at this point might have been disappointed, but I know this is exactly how it happens. No matter what may be going on in an alcoholic's life, good things, bad things, it’s all a reason to drink. So for her to relapse, I was happy to see this book would follow real life.
After she reaches her rock bottom, she figures out she cannot change for anyone but her. It’s agonizing and painful to read, because it’s so beautifully written. The feels with this book were all there. I celebrated with Avery and I cried with her. I have personally never been in this situation, but I had it in my childhood in the form of a parent. I broke when Avery broke and I wanted to help lift her up. I was so happy when she figured out she needed it. No one else. Just her.
Avery has Grayson and Ryan in her life, along her journey. Their unorthodox relationship is one of the most raw and understanding I’ve ever read. I’m intentionally leaving this relationship vague. Please read this book and experience Avery with me. It was amazing and I can’t wait to read the next one!
Looks like I had a much different experience than everyone else. I thought this was repetitive, confusing, and poorly edited. I was also mainly confused by the main character's addiction, which she keeps mentioning, but doesn't really seem to affect her aside from one relapse during her rehab. This one just wasn't for me.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I liked that this didnt make recovering from addiction seem fixed once you found the "right" person. It skimmed over some of the parts but it gives you an idea of what caan trigger you. I like the book and will probably read the next in the series
Escaping the Edge is Book 1 in the Edge series. It’s the story of Avery Bennett. Avery’s childhood was ruined by her parent’s addiction, which makes it even sadder when she becomes an addict herself. Drink and drugs keep her functioning and she carries on the cycle unable to stop even when her best friend is killed by a drunk driver. She is filled with guilt as she realises it could have been her driving. After his death she tries to change by going to a support group. That’s where she meets Ryan who becomes her sponsor. He also lives in the same building so they spend loads of time together and become close. They are obviously attracted to each other but Ryan takes his sponsor role very seriously and won’t develop a relationship with Avery. He’s never been an addict but his father is one – Ryan has to cope with both Avery and his father. Everything seems back on track until Avery gets a message from the past that soon has her spiraling back to her old ways.
Addiction is a tough subject and this novel explores it leaving the reader with no doubts about how hard it is to overcome personal demons. It can be an uncomfortable read if you’ve never experienced anyone with addiction but the story does get you hooked and eager to find out if Avery does get her life back on track as well as what the future holds for her and Ryan.
I give this book a four-star rating and a very high recommendation. I really enjoyed this book, this book is part of a series, and it brought up a lot of emotions for me as hit up a lot of nerves due to alcoholism in my own family, for there was a lot a lot in this book. Avery is a brave woman for admitting she has a problem and finally getting the help she needed even if it took a devastating incident to make her realize she needed help and to make a change, it really made me cry and when the love of her life died and it changed everything for her. I can’t wait to see what’s to come for her in the following book I don’t want to post any spoilers but I do highly recommend this read to all readers, for this was an amazing book. This is a good book read all readers, and I really do think everyone would I enjoy it as much as I did. So if you do not have a copy it, what are you waiting you? Get your hands on this amazing book today. This was my first book by this author but it won’t be my last. H.M. Sholander keep up the good work you did and amazing job and can’t wait to read more of your work. This was her first book and she did amazing and I believe she has amazing more works to come.
Escaping the Edge by H.M. Sholander is the first book in the Edge series. This story is about addiction and over coming that addiction. This story will pull at your heart strings and warm your heart at the same time. You will love how the author has created characters that you will be able to relate to especially if you have had to deal with addiction or know someone who has. Addiction is hard on everyone especially the addict until they can come to terms with it. The author has done an awesome job of showing you what happens to addicts and those around them. Find out if addiction wins or if the addict will overcome all that comes with being an addict!

Will he help her over come her guilt and addiction to be the true person she should be? Will they find what neither one thought they would find?
This is my first story by H.M. Sholander and I know it won't be the last. I can't wait to see what happens to Avery and Ryan! H.M lives with her husband and two lazy cats. She loves to read, write and travel. She can't wait to see the world and she encourages everyone to follow their dreams, as they are the only thing that can make you happy. You will love how this author has created a story so true to life and will make you feel what they are feeling. This story is a page turner that you will lose track of time in and most likely read in one sitting. You will need to see what will happen on the next page and won't be able to put it down. I highly suggest this story as I know you will want to find out what happens to these characters as much as I did.
Escaping the Edge was about Avery overcoming her fears, her guilt, her addiction, and her problems. This was Avery's journey finding closure on her past, to forgive but not forget, before moving forward. Avery learned to heal her broken heart with the aid and support of her friends Emily and Ryan. Avery was faced with unexpected circumstances that made her address her problems that had been ignored. Avery chose to face her addiction by joining AA meetings where a sponsor was assigned to her. Ryan taught Avery how to move on and be strong by believing in herself. Ryan was an excellent sponsor providing support, encouragement, comfort, and compassion. Ryan shared a common factor with Avery where his father too was an alcoholic so he was familiar with the signs of addiction.
Avery grew up in a home where both parents were alcoholics. Avery thought drinking was an acceptable behavior until she herself became an alcoholic. Avery had a five year relationship with Greyson who was aware of her problems with alcohol but was in denial. Greyson dealt with Avery's problems until he could no longer face the truth of her addiction. Avery chose to set him free in hopes of getting better. Instead, Avery lost Grayson when a drunk driver hit his car killing him. Avery blamed herself for Grayson's death which sent her spiraling. Once again Avery found herself clutching to her bottle to numb the pain. I found it ironic that Ryan would want a relationship with an alcoholic. I thought maybe he needed to be a sponsor so he could finally fix someone. Ryan slotted himself easily into Avery's life. Ryan went beyond the call of duty spending more time than necessary to make sure Avery was distracted from her temptations. I think Ryan needed the distraction as well since his father was an alcoholic. I did not think this arrangement could succeed considering the issues of addiction but the author showed me that you are stronger than your faults and your past mistakes don't define you. Ryan helped Avery face her fears with the love and support. Ryan was a selfless character who devoted his time and energy to two people who had an addiction problem. Ryan's character was inspirational on a human level. Any person would be honored and blessed to have a person like him rooting for their success. I enjoyed reading about Avery's transition from alcoholic to recovering alcoholic. Her road to recovery was a journey filled with pain, hope, and courage.
“Letting go doesn’t mean forgetting." “I lost the love of my life. He walked away from me because I couldn’t walk away from my addiction. Two great quotes.
5 star review Escaping the Edge is the first book in the Edge series by H.M. Sholander and what a powerful book it is! Wow even after I have finished reading my mind is still thinking about what I have read. Whilst I can’t relate to the characters in this story and their situations I can imagine how they got to where they have. I think I was on the edge of tears throughout this book because I so desperately wanted the character to try and heal. I would say that if addiction is a trigger for you then maybe this isn’t the best story for you to read but it is without doubt superbly written. It’s written with sympathy and with respect towards many people who find that they are in this situation. The author has clearly done an amazing job with this book and that should definitely be recognised! I was completely astounded when I found at this was the authors debut novel. It is probably the best debut novel from an author that I have ever read and can’t wait to read the next one in the series! The story starts with action straight away when we are introduced to Avery, who has first-hand experience of dealing with addiction. She lived with parents who were both addicts. Unfortunately for Avery she has wondered down the same path. She is wracked with guilt over the loss of her best friend. She is drowning in her addiction so she decides she needs to do something about it. The she meets him! Ryan – her saving grace. If my heart could break for a character it would be for Avery. She had such a rubbish childhood and that carries over into her adult life but she was braver than she could imagine. Brave for taking that first step in admitting that she had a problem and for that I had the upmost respect for her. I loved reading her story because it felt so real. I could feel every emotion she was feeling, I was rooting for her to fight it! Ryan was just an amazing person. Having clearly experienced addiction from a different point he was there for Avery at every step even when she tried her hardest to push him away. I really did love his character! There were some moments in this story when I just had to put it down because I couldn’t see through the tears. It was so powerful and I was really able to get a look into how life can be for an addict and their road to recovery – they are much stronger and braver people that they think and I admire that in them! A truly beautiful story that I highly recommend and it wholeheartedly deserves the 5 stars I give it! An outstanding debut novel!
Book Review: Escaping the Edge Author: H. M. Sholander FIVE STARS This book deals with the sensitive subject of addiction. Drugs and alcohol. The author H.M. Sholander, does a wonderful job of describing the addiction, the pull it has the way it messes with your mind and how hard it is to ignore the pull. It also makes you realize that these vices are pretty much everywhere you turn. It is nearly unavoidable and it readily available all the time. The pressure it puts on ones psyche is horrendous. The strain put on relationships and the destruction of familys. Avery grew up in a home where at a young age she was made to fetch her parents beer from the fridge and if she didn't do what she was told she wouldn't eat. At a young age she learned to sneak food quickly just to have something in her little belly. Avery started drinking at the age of 16. Doing drugs was her next step to help her deal with a rough break-up when the alcohol didn't numb her enough. Ryan's mom moved out when he was 12 and his brother was younger. Leaving them alone with their father who decided his way to cope was to drink himself senseless. Being the older brother Ryan made sure his brother was taken care of. Now Ryan's brother is off at college and Ryan gets the call all the time to go pick up dad and take him home from the bar or whereever he happens to be at the moment. It was at an Alcoholics Anonomous meeting that Ryan and Avery met. Ryan who is not a drinker, goes to the meetings anyway because he needs the support dealing with his father, just as much as the alcoholics themselves need the help coping with recovery. Ryan is assigned as Avery's sponsor. This is their story. How Avery tries to become sober for the wrong reasons and how she learns what the right reasons to stay sober are. Can she and Ryan make things work? Will they be able to overcome Avery's ghosts that haunt her daily? Wonderful five star read. I am looking forward to the second book that H.M. Sholander mentions at the end of this book. KELLI HARPER
Addiction. It grabs you by the throat and hardly ever lets go. Recovery. It is not an easy process. It is hard, painful and heartbreaking. In Escaping the Edge, H. M. Sholander, gives us the story of Avery who is an addict and how she struggles with her recovery.
Avery Bennett is twenty-four years old, but she has experienced so much as a young person. Her parents were full on alcoholics who had no business having a daughter. Drinking was normal to her, there was nothing wrong with it. Until it became a problem in her relationship. Greyson and Avery dated for five years and were best friends. Greyson was hit by a drunk driver and died. Ironic right? It broke Avery. But that was a month ago, now she is going to Alcoholic Anonymous meetings and trying to get clean.
Ryan Jackson is twenty-five and is not an addict. His father was (and still is) the alcoholic. On Avery's first day he says the program works and it is only his story that makes her listen.. He becomes Avery's unconventional sponsor. Because the pair spend so much time together, they start to develop feelings for one another but that wouldn't be right. He pulls her out of her bad spells, he becomes her shoulder to lean on, her confidant, the one thing that matters. But is she ready to move on? Will he be able to help her?
This story is raw, it is emotional, it is truthful. Sholander writes in a way that allows you to connect with Avery. Let's you see why she does what she does, how this became a bigger problem than she thought. You can understand how she blames herself and doesn't allow herself to move on. Ryan tries so hard to be there for her and she pushes him away. But that boy is a saint. He does not give up on her even when she does.
This is my first time hearing about the author Sholander. The book was a shorter, easy read. The story flows well and is inspiring and at times cute. We find out that Avery and Ryan’s story will continue in a second book. I am anxious to see how each have dealt with their own issues.
This story deals with addiction and how it can affect those addicted and those who are around the addicted person.
Avery has an addiction to both alcohol and drugs. Her addiction has been made worse by the death of Grayson who until recently she thought she was I love with. Avery’s day consisted of work and when home from work she turned to her drugs and alcohol, she drunk until she could no longer feel anything. Grayson often tried to help but there was nothing he could do to help her so he left. Avery’s best friend Emily was worried about her and wished Avery was strong enough to get the help that she needed.
Avery decided it was time she started to help herself and found and AA meeting that was close to her home. She was not comfortable at this meeting and decided she was not going to speak but listen to what the others had to say. At hr meeting she was listening to what she thought was a handsome man talk, and she couldn’t work out why he was there since he didn’t have an addiction. At the end of the meeting Rachel who was running the meeting suggested that if anyone needed a sponsor to see her and she wo9uld get them one.
Avery introduced herself to Rachel and asked her what it was the role of a sponsor. Rachel spent ten minutes going through the role of a sponsor then informed Avery she had just the right sponsor for her. She took Avery outside and introduced her to Ryan. Ryan was the handsome man from earlier. After a chat with Ryan Avery consented for him to be her sponsor. Ryan offered to walk Avery home and they discovered that they lived I the same apartment building. When they got home, Ryan suggested that he help her get rid of all her drugs and alcohol. His help was watching her tip the alcohol down the sink and flushing the drugs down the toilet.
Now all Avery had to do was to be strong enough to get through what was going to be the toughest time of her life and accept the help being offered by Ryan.
Having an addiction is one of the hardest things to have. Not knowing why it started, or knowing but not realizing it soon enough is even more difficult. Losing someone because of the same addiction that is pulling you apart, sometimes you just can't come back. This book is more than just a recovery process, its an eye opener, and how a process can work. This book was written, so not only you understand Avery, but you understand what addiction does to everyone around also. How people were and are trying to save you, how to let go, finding out how to move on. I loved how we had many characters in this book and how it not only affected Avery, but how addiction affected the other characters in this book.
Everyone has a part of them that feels that you need to find yourself. Self rediscovery, is hard to do, but Avery has to do this. She is lost, but she is trying to move on after losing Greyson. Greyson was not hers at the end, but she was trying to find her way back to her, so when an accident happens and she loses him, she knows life for her has to change. Trying out the twelve step program, she gets a sponsors. What she doesn't realize he is going to more than that. Avery was a good character and at times I could feel for her, but others not as much. I just couldn't get completely on board with her, but her story I loved. Ryan was wonderful, going through an addiction also, but differently he touched me, because he was just wonderful throughout the book. Watching these two grow was great. You do see the growth between both, you see the struggles, and you see how hard they try to get over the addiction.
I liked this book, I liked that it was paced that you could understand what was going on at all times. It made for a great story. This is my first time reading this author and I was not disappointed. I hope to read more from this author soon.
Escaping the Edge: (Edge Book 1) By: H.M. Sholander 5 out of 5 stars
The story Escaping the Edge: (Edge Book 1) by H.M. Sholander is an inspirational romance book. Avery Bennett knows a lot about life. She knows about losing the one she thought was her soul mate and the crippling effects of her drug and alcohol abuse. Avery has decided that she needs to leave her addictions behind so she reaches out for help. It is then that she meets Ryan. Will he be able to help her put her life back together?
I can’t express who much I enjoyed reading this book. It is mainly about addiction and how Avery is reaching out for help, however, it is also how she seeks to find self-forgiveness and redemption. The story is told from Avery’s POV. Avery’s life is tragic. She loses her boyfriend not once but twice. The first time when they broke up and the second to death. Guilt over this consumes her. Although her problems with drugs and alcohol started before his death, this only makes them worse. The story gives a very realistic view into her life. Ryan wants to help Avery to overcome her addictions. He is a very patient person and truly wants Avery to succeed. The mood of this story can get dark at times however it is necessary to accurately depict what goes through the mind of someone fighting with their addictions. Another part of this story is the blooming relationship between Avery and Ryan. Avery realizes the attraction the first time they meet and does her best for a while to ignore it. This is until she can’t. This is a book that has touched my heart and soul. It is an emotional read that will have you reaching for the tissues more than once when reading. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to read a story of a lost soul and her journey to find herself again. There are many references to drug and alcohol abuse along with some adult situations. It would be for those who are 18 years of age or older.
Real life isn’t a fairytale… “Fight through the storm. The outcome is beautiful.” What a great way to start this novel. In Escaping The Edge, you follow the ups and down of an addict named Avery. What I usually find in novels that address addiction is that they are always a perfect happy ending or they will even glamorize the issue. As someone who’s experienced the effects of a loved one having an addiction that tends to cause me to put down the book out of frustrations. I cannot express enough with words how beautifully and real this book is written. It will leave you laughing, crying and emotionally raw. In all the right ways too! I would give this book so many more stars if I was able to. Each word sucked me in and touched me in such a way, that I was not expecting. Brutal, beautiful, and honest, were the words that flowed through the back of my mind while reading it. Avery is suffering from alcohol abuse and recently cocaine. Its torn her entire life apart and left her with really no one. Her boyfriend, love of her life, Grayson, left because he couldn’t be her enabler her anymore. Then the irony hits her when he is killed in a car accident because of a drunk driver. In grief she decides enough is enough and to vow to get sober for his honor. Now here is where the problems come in. An addict cannot get sober or better unless they choose to do so for themselves. We find that out in her journey to sobriety with her new sponsor Ryan. In the end they both find solace with their demons, even the demons that they didn’t know they were battling. This is about as real as it can get for this subject. I will be reading the next one in the series as soon as possible. “Real life isn’t a fairytale. Real life is a roller coaster that at any moment without any warning can throw you down until you feel like you’re about to hit rock bottom.”
I finished Escaping the Edge yesterday and I needed a full day to think about what I just read. This book is not for the faint of heart but when you finish it, you are a stronger and better person for having read it. This is an amazingly realistic portrayal of addiction and what it does to you and the ones you love. It shows just how damaging the affliction can be but yet there is hope. Avery has not had a good few years as she battles her addiction. As she pulls herself out of the hole she finds herself in and seeks help, she realizes that it is even harder than she thought. Ryan is dealing with addiction too, just differently. As they form a friendship a battle begins of which is stronger, the addiction or the desire to be the person you want to be. This is a five-star read for me because I was left speechless and I didn’t want it to end. Without going into detail and ruining this wonderful story I found myself in awe of H.M. Sholander and at the end I wanted to find her and hug her. There is no indication that this is a true story but it is written so that I believe it is. This was beautifully tragic with just the right amount of optimism. It showed me a deeper insight into a world that has always fascinated me and for which I have a ton of respect. This story grabbed me instantly and when I finished it, I sighed wanting to know if they make it and if it gets easier for them. I saw humanity at its lowest point and then on the next page at its highest, that is what makes this book so amazing to me. It has a range of emotion and a depth that can only be done by a master and because of that I am officially hooked. If you know anyone who has ever struggled with who they are then you need to read this book. If you want a deeper look into the human psyche, then please read this book. I doubt you will be disappointed.
Escaping the Edge: Edge Book 1 by H.M. Sholander 4 stars ***Trigger Warning – Alcohol and Drug Abuse*** Addiction is a threefold disease. Mental, Physical and Spiritual: Mental is the how/what/when/where/why/with who. Physical is the fact that an addict can’t take/do/part of just one – one is too many and one thousand is never enough and the Spiritual is the loss of values an addict encounters. I would NEVER do blah blah for a fix. Or the broken promises to stop. Avery Bennett is an addict in every sense of the word. She’s addicted to substances and she’s addicted to the relationship/memory of her best friend/boyfriend. She knows what addiction is because she watched it growing up. It never occurred to her that it wasn’t “normal” to live the way she does. Until it’s too late. Avery wakes up being sick and tired of being sick and tired and attends a meeting of fellow addicts. In the room she meets others who have overcome their addictions and they give Avery hope. She meets a guy (gosh, it always starts that way – doesn’t it) and he becomes someone that she can rely on to help her redirect her thinking when a craving hits, or a wayward thought, or whatever. Ryan is there for Avery when others can’t be. Either they don’t understand or are too far away. It is a tale of a broken hearted girl who meets a broken hearted boy and how they guide and help each other out in life. I am assuming that because this is a book of fiction, the author took liberties in writing about recovery. Sometimes, it was hard for me to separate the fiction from how I work a 12 step program. I have rated this story on the merit of being fiction. If you can identify with being powerless over alcohol or drugs, please know there is help out there. We DO recover and you are NOT alone. Help is only a phone call away.
Escaping the Edge by HM Sholander was most definitely a 5 star read for me.
Avery Bennett and Ryan Jackson come from almost the same backgrounds but the way their lives went was completely different. Avery grew up with both of her parents being alcoholics. From the time she was little she saw what the effects of alcohol does to a person and their loved ones. Still with knowing that, at the age of 16, she took her first drink and it continued into adulthood. So severely to the point that she lost one of the most important people in her life because of it. Ryan and his younger brother were raised by a single father. After their mother walked out on them, his father turned to beer and never looked back. Ryan and Avery meet at an AA meeting where she is wanting to stay clean and sober and he is a sponsor. Even tho he is not a recovering addict, he knows how hard it is and can be to overcome an addiction. He promises to be there and help her however he can. Ryan does just that, he helps her get clean and hopes that she is on her way to freedom from the demons that she has. If only she could completely open up to not only the group but Ryan too. After about 2 months of sobriety, Avery she sees something from her past, and it sends her into a tailspin. Will she be able to recover this time? Or is she so far out of control, there might be no way to heal this time. Never having dealt with any type of addiction first hand, this book really opened my eyes. My heart broke for everything that Avery had gone through in her life, it also broke for Ryan, being on the other side of addiction. It shows that not only is the addict affected but the families are possibly more so. I am looking forward to seeing what becomes of Avery and Ryan.
Escaping the Edge is book one of HM Sholander’s Edge series and it is also the first book that I have read by this amazing author. This book brings you through a whole variety of different emotions that will make you feel like you have been through the ringer. Avery is an unhappy broken girl who has major addictions. She has recently lost her boyfriend/ slash best friend because she wouldn’t get help and then she lost him forever. She is drowning is a sea of her own loss, grief and guilt and then drowning that with alcohol. A full month goes by before she realizes that she may have a problem. And decides to see what treatment would be like. She is unsure if she is going to be able to do it but is willing to try; but then she met Ryan and he changes everything. Ryan knows what it is like to battle an addiction daily, he has own reasons for showing up at meetings and being a sponsor. But he has never sponsored someone that makes him feel thing like Avery does. Ryan can see the potential in Avery and Avery sees her salvation in Ryan but when the past comes back and the present is to much to handle will they be able to save each other or will they fall back into old habits? Gosh this book made me cry, sob, gasp, sigh and ultimately want to hug Ryan and Avery. Both have gone through so much in their young lives and it was amazing to watch the way that they pushed each other and themselves. I do have to say that there was one part that I wanted to take Ryan and protect him from the harness happening around him but it all worked out. I cannot wait to read the next book and get more of their heart-wrenching story. I do highly recommend this book to everyone I know. I do not know anyone that wouldn’t love it!
Escaping the Edge by HM Sholander is a very emotional read. Wow. It is hard to explain all the emotions that are running through my body right now. I am on a high (probably a bad comparison) seeing what the book is about. But it is true.
The author portrays addiction in a way I have only seen in one of my book series and to me this is going to knock it down a while. Powerful words you read coming from two different individuals living in different sides of addiction.
You have Avery who has been an addict for a while. Someone who struggles constantly and is fighting her own demons in the past and the present. Fighting a war with herself every day she wakes up. And attempting to get better, but not always for the right reasons.
Ryan is on the other side of addiction. Cleaning up and fixing things for a family member of his own his life has been ruled by this person and their addiction, something he cannot escape. It haunts him every single day.
What happens when their two worlds collide? Someone trying to get better and someone who is trying to get away from something like that. Will their friendship last even through the good times and bad?
Will Avery be strong enough to be able to get free?
You feel like you are living through them. Living through their pain and memories. The author did an amazing job when It came to putting her heart into it. You can tell this was a book from the heart. Every single word was perfect. Thank you for this masterpiece.
Escaping the Edge by HM Sholander was very interesting.
We are taken into a world of addiction. We get to see and feel what it is like to have an addiction and the struggles that a person goes through when they battle addiction. Avery is struggling with the death of her former boyfriend. She didn't cause the accident which killed him but she feels responsible. She finally decides to get help. During her first Alcoholics Anonymous meeting she is paired up with a sponsor, Ryan. Ryan understands addiction but not from a personal internal battle. He comes with the knowledge of seeing others battle. He becomes Avery's sponsor and helps her when she has a bad day. They end up hanging out and become friends. Avery manages to stay clean for a little while but eventually the addiction takes over. She falls into her old patterns and pushes everyone away. She has an epiphany and wants to change. It is a heart wrenching story that takes you through the struggle of addiction.
I cannot imagine battling something like addiction without support. I have never gone down the path of getting hooked on alcohol or drugs but there are millions of people who struggle with it everyday. But the most important thing to remember is in order to change you have to change for you and no one else. By wanting to change for you there is a higher success rate of staying clean.
I give this book 4 stars for the feelings it induces.
Escaping the Edge by HM Sholander is the first in Sholander’s Edge series and it will touch your heart. It is a book about recovering from addiction, and learning how to accept and love one’s self.
Avery Bennett swore she would never be like her parents. Drunk, disconnected and unable to live life happily. However, that is exactly where she finds herself. She's lost everything, and when an accident takes the life of her one reason for living, she meets her rock bottom. Attending her first AA meeting, she feels lost and cynical. Until another member shares their story, giving her hope she thought couldn't exist. Ryan isn't the a normal AA member. The son of an alcoholic as well, he can see Avery in a way no one else has before. He gives her hope and safety in a way she's never felt before. And as they grow and heal together, you will fall in love with their stories.
I absolutely loved the real and authentic way that Sholander depicted Avery’s addiction. I'll admit that I didn't feel a big connection with either Avery or Ryan. There were a few aspects of their character development that seemed a bit rushed. However, I have never dealt with addiction, so reading this book from the depth that the author wrote it was new for me. Ryan seemed to good to be true at times, however the way he helped and talked with Avery was so beautiful and uplifting, that I couldn't help but fall in love. I cannot wait to see what is in store for these two characters in book two.
Escaping the Edge by H.M. Sholander Four Stars Escaping the Edge is the debut book by H.M. Sholander and the first book in the Edge series. This book depicts the ups and downs of addiction. Avery grew up in a home where both her parents were addict. She started drinking at the young age of 16. Grayson, her boyfriend, of five years leaves her because he can't help her with her addiction. He is killed in a car accident by a drunk driver and although Avery doesn't have anything to do with the actual accident, she holds herself responsible. She decides that she will change her life because of her guilt over Grayson’s death and starts AA. Avery is paired up with a sponsor named Ryan, who hasn't battled addiction himself, but his father is a relapsing alcoholic. Ryan goes with Avery to meeting and helps her through withdrawal. Things are going well for Avery for a while and then she relapses. The guilt she feels won't let her out of the drinking cycle. Will she learn to live with her guilt? Will she learn to responsibility for her addiction? Will she be able to do it for herself? This story made me laugh and cry and everything in between. I think the author did a good job with describing the life with an addiction. There may be triggers about alcoholism and drug abuse, but the situations were dealt with honestly. I'm looking forward to reading the second book in the series. I'm hoping for a happily ever after.
With Escaping the Edge, HM Sholander immerses the reader in the struggles, guilt and anguish created by addiction. Avery is the child of alcoholic parents who has lived the life of the party girl. Waking one morning to discover all the partying has turned into a problem she can’t rein in, she watches the love of her life walk away from her. When a tragic accident - ironically at the hand of a drunk driver - takes his life, she can’t curb the impulses dragging her under, but instead spirals downward further and faster, finally admitting she has a problem only when she hits rock bottom. It’s at her first AA meeting that Avery meets Ryan. Son of an alcoholic father whose only reprieve from the clutches of addiction was during his time attending AA, Ryan believes in the program and offers to act as Avery’s sponsor. But both soon learn that recovery is a process of one step forward and two steps back when the demons that drive the addiction are allowed along for the journey. This book conveys the frustration of the addict battling those demons, and the pain endured by the loved ones of addicts who abandon the battle and allow their vices to suffocate them. It also communicates hope: the love and support with which Avery is blessed giving her a second chance at happiness and freedom from the chains of her addiction. It’s on this upswing that we are left at the end of this book, waiting for Avery and Ryan’s story to continue in Book 2.
Escaping the Edge by H.M Sholander is the first book of the Edge series that I gave 4 out of 5 stars. Trigger warning: This book details alcohol and drug abuse. This was an amazingly insightful and beautifully written novel! It is written in first person POV by the main character, Avery.
Addiction, it doesn’t just affect the addict. It affects everyone in the addict’s world. Avery has a serious problem. Drugs and alcohol have become her air that she breathes, it’s consuming her whole. She loses her only source of comfort besides her vices-her best friend Grayson. Now, she is the epitome of wrecked with no one to help put the pieces back. She musters up what strength she has left to save herself. Joining AA introduces her to the very compassionate and handsome Ryan-her new sponsor. Will Ryan be able to help Avery keep her courage to fight her demons? Will he cross the lines and become more than a sponsor?
Wow, just wow. This was almost lyrical to read, the writing was just so amazing! Everything Avery feels, the reader feels. The inner dialogue and musings of Avery are hauntingly beautiful. All the characters are vividly written, and highly detailed. It’s not a “pretty” book in the sense of the topic, yet it is so beautifully written. As an ICU nurse, I see people struggling with addiction at some of their worst times in their lives. This book, for me, was an insight into the background of my patients afflicted with this disease. Highly recommend reading this!
Escaping the Edge by H.M. Sholander tells the story of an addict named Avery Bennett. You would have thought, by the way that she grew up, that she would know better than to start drinking. Every memory she has of her parents involves beer in some way. Even if there was no food in the house, the fridge was always full of beer.
So, Avery started drinking young and become addicted. It ruined her relationship with her best friend. After his death, she spirals out of control. She lost herself (and months) in alcohol and drugs. She can’t even remember his funeral!
She decides to get better for him. She starts attending meetings, going through the steps. Her sponsor Ryan is there every step of the way. He is not your typical sponsor because he is not an addict but he is a wonderful one because he has seen first hand how addiction can tear a family apart.
However, Avery learns quickly that if you aren’t trying to get help for yourself, it doesn’t always work. You have to reach deep inside yourself in order to get better. You have to be ready to face your demons and open up, which is really hard for her to do!
I couldn’t put Escaping the Edge down! I read it in just a day or two because I was rooting for Avery so much. She deserves to have a good life. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series so I can see what happens!
“The Struggle is Real” The first of two books, Escaping the Edge is Avery’s journey through addiction and recovery. This is not a book I'd normally pick up but was definitely an easy, smooth flowing story. We meet Avery at the beginning of her AA road to recovery. There she finds her sponsor Ryan. Through a series of flashbacks we find out the many reasons Avery has chosen alcohol and drugs to cope with her myriad of problems. While Ryan himself is not an addict he is a survivor of childhood neglect and an alcoholic father. To quote the book, “We were meant to help each other. To heal each other.” Everyone knows the road to recovery is not easy and there are many bumps and triggers along the way. This is also true for Avery, we get to read of her struggles and to find out if she is strong enough to overcome them. This book is eye opening about the mind of an addict and the temptations they go through to overcome and persevere. Walking into her first AA meeting Avery feels uncomfortable, “not because I felt like I was being judged or didn't belong, I felt uncomfortable because I knew I belonged there.” We get to experience all the feelings Avery goes through from her first step into AA to the start of new relationships, and mending old friendships. I look forward to reading book 2 Finding the Light and reading about Avery’s ongoing relationship with her sponsor Ryan.
Escaping The Edge by H.M. Sholander is a powerful story about addiction and the difficulty one has when realizing that they need help and getting the help that they need. This story will pull on your heart strings and bring a tear to your eye, and I for one cannot wait to see what is next for Avery & Ryan. I would absolutely recommend this book to others!
Avery has been an addict, for most of her life, and when booze wasn't enough she added in drugs to her routine if getting wasted. It's following the tragedy of Grayson's death that she finally decides to admit she has a problem and get help.
Ryan has lived with an alcoholic his entire life and has never succumb to the vices of his father but he makes a point to help others and attend AA meetings because that is how he copes with his fathers illness. When Avery and Ryan meet at an AA meeting and he becomes her sponsee she thinks she is in big trouble and she very well may be if she falls for him and doesn't focus on recovery. We all fall in our quest for help and Avery is no different but it's how she gets up again that has the reader rooting for her to make it.
