Tempestuous

Rate this book
This is an alternate cover edition for B00AL48JNU

The fiery-haired, tempestuous Brynja Teare lived anything but an average childhood. Her change in address was as unpredictable as the shift in weather, undergoing a life on the run in order to conceal her ability to govern thunder and lightning, wind and storms. Along with her father’s recent desertion, she lost the answers to a long list of questions. For starters, why does she possess such powers? And from whom, if anyone, for all these years, have they been running? When a chance encounter places her across the path of highlander Galinn Gunn, she has the opportunity to discover the key to her past. But is the fairytale world she imagined, the life she actually desired? Or has her repressed life on the run merely been an unsetting glimpse of her future? In her quest to find the answers, she must distinguish the truths from the lies, but deciding whom she can trust, and who is out to deceive her is not a simple task, because in her real life fairy nightmare, nothing is black and white.

Hi! My name is Anne Berkeley. I'm a full time cubicle dweller, wife and mother of two beautiful children. I do all things creative. Photoshop, photography, scrapbooking, decorating, barbering, and I would like to think...writing.

I dream up most of my material during my seventy-five minute commute to work and home again. Some of it comes to fruition and other times it's edited out again. But I hope that what made the cut is worthy of note.

I write paranormal romance novels for adults. No not erotica. Though there are some steamy scenes. I'm working on several novels at the present. Yes, more than one. I jump back and forth as my mood dictates. It's the way I work best. Tempestuous, my first novel, released in 2012, Torrid in 2013 and Feral, the first of a new series in 2013. I'm working to complete Turbulent (Third and final novel for the Tempestuous series), a second novel for the Feral series, and two standalone novels. And yes, I work full time too, so please have patience, my plate is full.

In short, that's me. You can follow me on Facebook, Twitter and Goodreads. The links are below. And if you enjoyed my book, it would be appreciated immensely if you would consider leaving a review, or better yet, tell your friends and family.

Thanks for your support, Anne.

Tempestuous is a promising paranormal romance novel, with fascinating elements of Celtic folklore and Norse mythology. It follows Brynja "Bry" Teare, a young woman with extraordinary gifts and a troubled past, who conceals her abilities for years, while on the run. Bry's quest for self discovery leaves her with questions as to who she really is, and whom she can trust. She encounters a Viking highlander, Galinn Gunn, and begins to discover her own true heritage and divine fate.

In the beginning, I had a hard time connecting to Bry, and in truth I found her too tough and emotionally disengaged. It wasn't until reading about her complicated upbringing, and the relationship with her father that I immediately understood her. It shaped who she was, and contributed to her inability to engage on an emotional level. It was especially evident in her interactions with Galinn.

Their banter was amusing, as Galinn seemed to be in tune with Bry's inner conflicts. Conversely, I found their romance a bit lacking. I was far more interested in the mythology of the Norse warriors, the Celtic lore, and the riveting legends that surrounded them. I am a sucker for mythology, so I absolutely loved this aspect of the story.

The minor issues didn't keep me from staying engaged, or take away from my enjoyment of the story. Overall, it was an intriguing and well written tale.

Wow!

This book was amazing!! I absolutely love books about Norse mythology, I absolutely love Thor. I'm a Thor whore ;). So this book was right up my alley.

I loved Brynja! She was fierce, independent, sassy, sarcastic, everything I love in a female lead. She is totally badass!

Galinn. I do believe he has become my new book boyfriend! He's this big bad warrior with a sweet side.

Brynja and Galinn together is perfect. They worked so well together that I found myself rooting for them throughout the whole book. There were times when I thought both needed a kick in the bum but in the end it worked out.

I loved the imagery the words provided. I honestly saw myself in the story. The author also provided great villains, I didn't guess the bad guy. I was actually shocked by it! She also weaved a web for the next book, which I can't wait to dive in to!

Overall excellent writing, characters, and book. I can't wait to see what is next for Brynja and Galinn!!

Anne Berekely’s Tempestuous is a creative urban fantasy incorporating aspects of Norse mythology and Celtic faery folklore. Brynja, a master of storms, is careful to control and hide her unusual powers until her fateful meeting with Galinn. Through him, she discovers that she is the hereditary Master of the Hunt in a realm of the supernatural inhabited by the descendants of Norse gods, their enemies and allies. Action, intrigue and the love story between Galinn and Bryna are punctuated with moments of humor as Bryna makes her voyage of discovery.

The use of first person created some challenges for me. I found some of Byrna’s language to describe herself of the action a bit jarring and it hampered the narrative flow: “tucking a lock of firey red hair behind my ear…silky line of my neck…kissed the slender column of my neck.” The central dynamic between Galinn and Bryna also began to wear as for the third or fourth time, Galinn insists Bryna is too fragile to enter combat and Bryna insists she can handle herself.

These minor flaws aside, the story is well developed and succeeds in world-building without digression or information dumps. The action is rapid paced, the battles well-constructed and riveting, and the description of the Wild Hunt exciting

Brynja is an 18 year old girl with unusual talents - she can control elements of the weather and can summon storms and lightning on command. For years her father has pretty much sheltered her from any sort of normal life, constantly moving from place to place, where Brynja never has much time to settle in and make friends. Once she reaches the age of 18, she decides enough is enough and stays put whilst her father moves on.

On a night out, Brynja attracts the attention of a stunning Viking looking dude in a bar and when she tries to fight off this strange shadowy creature sucking the life out of her friend, he jumps in to help her. He drags her off outside after she swallows the shadows and together they fight off another creature - this time a wolf. He takes her off, back to his place and soon everything she has ever known about her life and her world changes. Maybe for the better, maybe for the worse.

Brynja finds out that Galinn, the man who saved her, is a Berserker and is destined to be her soul mate. He knows her from days gone by, but she has no recollection of him, of his world or of herself in it. She becomes someone of great importance and her powers become even stronger. She uses these to try to find the men who killed her best friend, thinking she was Brynja, but soon realises that other people are not who she expects them to be at all. One of her close friends actually turns into quite a surprise!

I really loved Brynja. She was strong willed and almost fearless, stopping at nothing to fight back against those determined to hurt her. She certainly wasn't going to let a man fight her battles for her either, but at the same time, she was not scared to admit when she needed a hug! Her relationship with Galinn was funny, yet still romantic. Although he was adamant that they were soulmates, she wasn't going to make it easy for him at all. He had to prove himself to her. I love the Berserkir strong Scottish accents too - almost made them more mysterious and sexy! Love a good accent on a handsome, muscled man, don't you?!

I did receive this book from the author in return for my honest review, so thank you Anne for another fantastic read! Can't wait to read the next one now. I want to see how Brynja copes with her new responsibilities and to see if Hallstaein manages to get her in a frilly dress! LOL

**I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.**

The protagonist of our story is an 18 year old girl by the name of Brynja Teare, and we first meet her in a bar, where she gets herself in deep and fast, by tangling with a dark spirit. She's unwillingly rescued by a blonde Viking of a man, one Galinn Gunn, who will be forced to reveal to her a heritage and a fate she once only dreamed of.

TEMPESTUOUS has a gorgeously simple and elegant cover. Even if I knew nothing of the book, I'd have been drawn in by the cover art alone!

The story was good, but I had some issues that really came down to personal taste. There are many, many characters named and introduced throughout and I got held up trying to absorb them all and recollect who was who and who was related to whom and how. I also found some of Brynja's reactions to extraordinary sights and information to be somewhat lacking, and her insanely powerful abilities to be something of a hindrance to my enjoyment overall. But again, I stress that these are just my personal opinions and should in no way hold you back. The book is well-written, the love story appealing, and the mythology fun. So get a copy for yourself! I look forward to seeing how the story comes along in Book 2!

Tempestuous is a paranormal romance, which is a bit outside my typical genre preferences, so I was rather surprised by how quickly nearly all physical inhibitions between the female and male main characters (Brynja and Galinn) dissolved. To me this seemed to lessen an opportunity for building interest in the relationship development, but I've heard from others that this is fairly standard for the genre, so if you generally read and enjoy this genre, you'll probably find the fast start appealing.

While this central relationship did not take long to accelerate, Brynja (fist person POV) has to come to terms with who she is and just how much Galinn means to her. This part is significantly more complicated and the book primarily revolves around her process of self-discovery--along with this, she discovers fantastical worlds that she is intrinsically connected to and unexpected dimensions of people she thought she had figured out.

The mythological elements are intriguing and the writing is overall good, but I found many of Brynja's observations a bit unnatural and I think another editing pass wouldn't hurt.

I hadn't read any fantasy in awhile when I picked up Tempestuous. It totally delivered on the mythology, the fantasy setting, the creatures, and of course, magical powers! Bryn, the heroine, is a normal teenager who finds herself swept into a grand adventure with, dare I say it, a band of berserkers who ride the night skies slaying the undead. That alone was enough reason for me to enjoy the book.

The romance between Bryn and Galinn was excellent. Galinn is patient, loving, devoted and very much the bada$$ berserker! Tempestuous has some great, epic fantasy action scenes as well. Oh, and did I say dragons? Yes, dragons are awesome. Especially when you get to go for a ride on them! Anne Berkeley does a great job evoking the best aspects of the fantasy genre. She put me right into the action with all of the characters, creatures, and castles. It was super easy to envision this book being a movie. Loved it!

A great read for fans of fantasy romance.

I received a copy of this as a beta reader by the author and was asked to give a review. :)

This book was a little slow moving at first, but I quickly realized that this was to bring the story, characters and the in depth world into play at the right time.

Brynja Teare is the main character that this series focuses on. She is a feisty, Tempestuous(Hence the title.), complicated young woman. I honestly did not like her at first, until I understood why she is the way she is.

She is very spirited, yet confused as to her heritage. When she comes in contact with the highlander Galinn Gunn she has the chance to discover the secrets and unanswered questions to her past. Which lead her to meet all manner of Fae and fantastical creatures.

Very entertaining, worthwhile and extremely well written and thought out, this is just the tip of the iceberg in the Brynja series. Elves, berserkers, Dragons....need I say more? If that is your passion, as it is mine, you will enjoy this book!!!!

The book was good. I am not sure if the writer sold me on the second book. I probably will not read anymore of the series. I do not like the way a strong woman must bow down to a man. A woman with off the power in the sky. Just because she lays down with a man should not give him any of her power. For once I would like a good story without having to bond with a man and give up power that is a birthright.I don't want to really give away spoilers but every time the author hit home the fact that our heroine was giving her power to a man ,any man, (I don't care how cute he is) it just burned my britches!

First I would to mention I received this book for free from author in exchange for an honest review.

This was a great story and I love Galinn and the other berserkers. They were funny but also caring and emotional. This book has a great story line with just the right amount if suspense and surprise twists to keep the fun going. It has dragons and elves too and I loooove dragons! It's also caused me to want to learn more about the legendary berserkers. I recommend this book if you like anything Celt, dragons and elves. I'm ready for book 2 to find out what happens
