Filled with provocative twists and turns as the line between plot and reality blurs in this inventive tour-de-force from breakout writer Jennifer Wolfe.
YA author Jennifer Wolfe (as Jennifer Bosworth) makes her adult debut with a devastating novel.
Jennifer Bosworth lives in Los Angeles, California. She is the author of the young adult novel Struck and is the writer half of a writer/director team with her husband, Ryan Bosworth.
Watch the Girls by Jennifer Wolfe is a 2018 Grand Central Publication.
Lots of chills and thrills with a quasi-satirical spin on reality tv and horror films-
Liv Hendrick’s Hollywood career crashes and burns after her youngest sister goes missing. Now she stars in a reality tv show with a ‘Scooby Doo’ style format as a she and her team attempt to solve old mysteries.
Then Liv puts a nail in the coffin of her career by giving a drunken interview that goes viral. She’s let go from the show- but… she has an idea- a web-series where she challenges people to try her detecting skills.
When one potential sponsor dares her to try and solve a small town’s string of disappearances tied to a horror movie that was once filmed there, Liv is in no position to turn down that kind of cash.
Thus begins an intense, atmospheric investigation, that plays out in real time via the internet. The story unfolds almost like the plot of a horror movie, with some key revelations popping up along the way, and some very lurid scenes that made me want to keep my eyes covered.
The story paints a dark picture of social media engagement, the bullying, trolls, and the fickleness of fans and followers, as well as unhealthy celebrity obsessions.
This is a fantastic modern, sardonic horror story/ mystery with a conclusion that hammers home the various points the author has embedded within the story from the beginning. The execution is spectacular, even though I did have a few suspicions along the way- I was never able to fully figure out how it would all end.
Overall, this is a clever, twisty tale with layers of dark humor and irony, proving the main terror is embedded in society as we know it today.
*More than average, and quite explicit sexual content, with some intense graphic violence- ala- old school seventies horror films- so proceed with caution.
This book needs to be made into a movie (or preferable a miniseries). I read A LOT of thrillers, but honestly, few really catches my attention in a way that makes me totally absorbed. WATCH THE GIRLS is one of them. Seriously, I just absolutely loved this book. It got everything I like, dysfunctional families, missing people, creepy little town, people with wolf masks, orgies ... yeah, I bet you're interested now? ;)
Seriously, I always hope to be entertained when I read a thriller, and often at least the books will keep me engrossed and interested. But, to truly capture my interest like this book did. It was like watching a movie. It was so well written that I could picture the story in my head. The characters came to life, the creepy forest, the little town, etc.
Now, I will not give away the story, no spoilers from me. I will just say this. I love the twist and turns this story took. I love the ambiguous ending (well I hated it too, the part of me that wanted closure). I love the dynamic relationship between Liv and Gemma. It's just such a wonderful thriller. And, they need to make it into a miniseries (with good actors)!
I want to thank Grand Central Publishing for providing me with a free copy for an honest review!
The first 1/3 of this book started off so creepy and had so much potential but that is about the only good things I have to say. This book went completely off the rails for me.
For the amount of violence and sex scenes this book had it actually read very much as young adult.
The ending sucked.
2 stars because I managed to finish it.
Thank you to NetGalley and Grand Central Publishing for providing me with a digital ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Is there really that much difference between being a detective and playing one on tv?
Liv Hendricks used to be Olivia Hill, the teen actress who was last seen in The Hills Have PIs alongside her younger sister Gemma. Olivia was the star going places, while Gemma was the liability with all her partying on the verge of being written out. That is until their younger sister Miranda disappeared on a night Olivia dragged her along to pick Gemma up from a party. Miranda was never seen again and Olivia barely survived the night herself with no memory of it. This was the end of Olivia Hill. She stopped acting and became Liv Hendricks.
Now, Liv struggling with alcohol recently fired and desperate for cash to make rent decides to join a crowd-funding site to make her own investigative show of unsolved mysteries..specifically missing persons. Those who donate make case suggestions, but whoever donates the most gets to select the mystery she solves. This is how she finds herself on the case of the Dark Road where four blonde girls have gone missing - each a few years apart - outside of a town made famous for the horror movies made there all by Jonas Kron.
The story is split between what happened the night Miranda went missing when Olivia was seventeen and present day thirty-two year old Liv on her investigation. There is a lot going on in the plot making the story engaging the entire time. It's interesting to go into a mystery without the investigator being a cop or PI. In this, Liv merely played a PI as a teenager, so she does know enough for amateur detective work. I liked that different perspective and how she would relate certain things back to her show.
The setting helps to add a creepy feel to the story. Stone's Throw really is a strange little town. The people who live there aren't very trusting of outsiders. And the movies filmed there were beyond twisted. I liked getting the incite into Kron's films when Liv would give details of the plots.
There was great character development with Liv. As the story plays out, we understand her character more and more and why exactly she does some of the things she does. I didn't mind not getting as much development on the random people in town because I get we are supposed to suspect nearly all of them in one way or another. What I did want was maybe a little more Gemma. The complex sister relationship was evident, but I maybe wanted a bit from it.
I enjoyed the twists throughout, even though a couple fell more on the predictable side. It would've been hard to figure out the whole of it all, though. There were a couple tiny loose ends at the end that bother me.
Recommended to anyone who enjoys dark thrillers. I flew through this one.
I'm actually very disappointed after reading Watch the Girls. The premise sounds amazing: Liv Hendricks is a falling child star who now is a reality television personality on a popular Ghost Hunters type of show. After she's let go by her boss, she drunkenly sets up a funding page to help her venture off on her own webseries that will follow a similar format. Liv gets a strikingly lucrative deal by one of the country's most eccentric movie producers to investigate the disappearances of several women in the town where he films his gory horror films. One catch—Liv can't mention who's the benefactor, and why she really chose to investigate this story as her first adventure.
Sounds great, right? Well sadly, Watch the Girls is a hot mess. I read it so effortlessly, and the pages really flew by however, the author had a lot of continuity issues throughout the story, and plot aspects really didn't line up. I felt that the story could've really been awesome, but cheap plot twists took the story in a ridiculous direction. Watch the Girls could've been darker, but it missed the mark when it came to real shock value. Cheap party tricks that were created after Gone Girl are really stale at this point, and I was expecting more.
I really was engaged for about 1/3 of the novel, and I mean really engaged—I couldn't put it down! Once the plot kept going in circles, and the ending kept "ending", sort to speak (you'll see what I mean when you read it!), it just verged on the point of unbelievable to me. I saw comparisons to Night Film, but I don't think it's fair to compare the two.
This was a book that really kept me guessing. When I first read the description for this book, I knew that I had to give it a try. I love a good thriller and this one looked to have a whole lot of promise. Once I got started with this one, I had to know how things would work out. There were plenty of twists and turns that kept the pages turning. I am glad that I decided to take a chance on this one.
Liv ended her acting career as a teenager when her sister disappeared. She has been working on a reality television show reminiscent of Scooby Doo. Since she is out of work, she decides to create her own investigation show on the web through crowdfunding. She is soon contacted by a well known director of horror films who wants to know what happened to his niece and several other women from town. Liv takes the job and starts trying to figure out what happened to these women.
Liv/Olivia was a tough character to figure out which I think added to the mystery of the story. As a teenager, Olivia was traumatized by the disappearance of her younger sister. As an adult, Liv is not exactly well adjusted. She drinks too much and behaves in a rather reckless manner. I wouldn't say that I disliked or really liked her character but she did keep me guessing and I saw a lot of growth in her by the end of the book.
I thought that the mystery was very well done. There were several things going on that I needed to some answers to in this book. I loved the fact that this book was a bit darker and I thought that the town which is known for the horror movies that have been made there was the perfect setting. I was also quite curious what really happened to Olivia's sister all those years ago.
I would recommend this book to anyone that like a darker book filled with lots of twists and turns. This was a very well written book that kept me guessing until the very end. Just when I thought I had part of the story figured out I would find that I was wrong. Even the characters kept me guessing with surprises throughout the story. I would not hesitate to read more of Jennifer Wolfe's work in the future.
I received a review copy of this book from Grand Central Publishing.
Initial Thoughts Maybe 3.5 stars? This was different and completely unexpected. Just as soon as I thought I knew where things were going I found out that I was completely wrong. I never really connected with any of the characters and Liv/Olivia was hard to figure out but that was part of the mystery. I will need to think about this one for a bit before posting my full review.
Watch the Girls finds former child star, Olivia Hill - now known as Liv Hendricks, hosting a crime investigation show which she crowdfunds (a la Kickstarter type tool), when she receives a large amount of funding from a famous filmmaker who wants to know what happened to his missing niece and hopes she will take this up on her show! Coincidentally, Jonas, the direction, had once wanted Liv to star in his film years ago - but Liv passed, and then her own sister Miranda also went missing. With the help of her sister Gemma, Liv delves into a dangerous game of her own, when she begins to "follow the white wolf" - there were MANY twists and turns in this one and I did not see most of them coming - I always love when a mystery really surprises me - and there were moments here where my jaw actually dropped!
I received an advance copy. All opinions are my own.
In 2003 Actress Olivia Hill had a hit TV show with her sister Gemma and movie roles were beginning to pour in. Their "momager", Desiree, was overbearing and more interested in money than the well being of her daughters and Gemma began a dangerous spiral with drugs and alcohol. Olivia and younger sister Miranda received a frantic call from Gemma asking if they'd pick her up from a party on Mulholland Drive. The evening ended in a car crash: Olivia suffered a traumatic brain injury and Miranda disappeared, never to be seen again. 15 years later, Olivia has changed her name to Liv Hendricks and finds herself broke and unemployed after she's let go from a B-list reality show. With the power of the internet, she manages to crowd fund a web series where she'll pose as a detective to investigate mysteries and the person who pledges the most gets to choose her first investigation. Legendary horror film maker Jonas Kron pledges $20K for Liv to come to the small town of Stone's Throw made famous by his films to investigate the disappearances of four young women, including his niece actress Annika Kron, on Dag Road now known as the Dark Road. His only request is that he remain anonymous so he doesn't start a media firestorm that will overshadow his film festival in town. Liv heads to Stone's Throw with little information, until she receives an ominous clue via social media: follow the white wolf. Her web series is garnering plenty of attention and she's making headway thanks to the mysterious clues left anonymously when her sister Gemma disappears on the Dark Road. Liv's popularity explodes thanks to viewers and everyone is discussing the shocking disappearance; rumors are flying that Gemma's disappearance is nothing but a publicity stunt. Caught up in Kron's strange world of horror in a secretive small town, everyone is a suspect. With all her attention on the missing girls that now include Gemma, Liv begins to think back to the night Miranda disappeared and reality begins to blur. What is the connection between all of these young women? Most of the twists felt obvious after a point but that didn't make the plot any less exciting. Watch the Girls is a fast paced thriller with plenty of shocking moments written with the cult horror film/grindhouse genre in mind.
I'll also add a *trigger warning* for sexual violence/rape.
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for providing an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Boy, oh boy, should I have looked at some reviews before jumping into this one, and this one may have been a bit ambitious on the gore/mature side for me.
That was the most depraved thing I've ever read, it ranks second to Dark Places. Through and through, this novel is definitely geared towards adults, and I don't mean new adult, (unless you are in that dark spot in your life, in which I completely recommend this novel. Perspectives can be changed), but adult. The level of content was not something I was mentally prepared for. cough cough beastiality cough. Arguably, however, there was no content to that effect, but suffice to say I'll never look at a wolf the same way again.
Going into this novel, it was extremely interesting. The dysfunctional family, the cutthroat media industry, all of those factors were well-illustrated and made Liv's persona/actions understandable. Unlike, my sentiments concerning Flynn's character in Dark Places. In any case, Wolfe had the setting and character down pat. The thriller was there. I went to sleep with a vice-like fear at the back of my mind.
By all accounts, the novel was stellar. Now this is where my personal bias comes in and says, Hell, I'm never reading this book again, and don't think I could possibly be moved to recommend this novel, unless they loved wolves and I didn't like them. In any case, this novel is a gory, mature (and I stress, mature) thriller. In essence, this book, while I thought was for me, really was a little too far in its depravity, and perhaps I should have waited a few years to weather my innocences before jumping into this one.
For those looking for thriller and don't mind extremely depraved reads, I'd say have at it. I was not, when reading this book.
I'm so torn on this one... Anything from A3 to A4 star read, in my book! This was such an incredibly quick read if I had more time during the day to read I think I would have read this in two sittings, however work and training got in the way, as it usually does. Some aspects of this book made me cringe because it seemed almost too unrealistic, while other aspects of it cringe because they were very realistic, such as the sadism and very graphic sex scenes. Let's just say this is not the type of book those with a weak stomach or fairly conservative stance in life would enjoy! That being said, I love those parts! I really enjoyed that there wasn't just one mystery involved in this novel, but several, which gave it some depth in my opinion! I'm very interested to see what Wolfe's young adult books read like, after finishing this one. Overall I'd say this is a pretty decent first effort, and I will definitely keep my eye open for follow up efforts!
ERMAHGERD!!! I'm kicking myself that I didn't tear into this the moment it arrived on my doorstep. This book was amazing! Liv is a great character and the story is so addictive. I had trouble putting it down. Eventually I could no longer keep my eyes open and had to get some sleep before finishing. As soon as I woke up all I could think about was... HOW DOES IT END? Get a copy of this book in your hands as soon as possible, it's one of the best mysteries I've read in a long time!!! * There are some fairly graphic scenes so be forewarned*
I hadn't even heard of this book until Nenia put it on my radar. I saw that my library had a copy on the shelves just waiting for me to grab it, so I did. And thus a buddy read was born.
This was basically everything I want in a thriller: dark, smutty, and twisted. And not only that, the aesthetics were top-fucking-notch! The characters were interesting, it was fast-paced, and it kept me throwing out theories left and right.
While reading, I realized this reminded me of NIGHT FILM. All I remember about that book is edge-of-your-seat twistiness and horror films, and the fact that I felt let down at the end. WATCH THE GIRLS ended up being what I wanted NIGHT FILM to be. There are a few questions I still have, but I don't feel cheated out of answers.
I blew through this in less than twenty-four hours, basically forcing Nenia to stay up late to finish it with me. And I'm not sorry! I had such fun with this and kept texting her what amounted to nonsensical screaming. I ended up dreaming about it all night because I'm obsessed.
This book had goods and bads. I was completely drawn in by the title and cover. I figured it would be a bit dark and twisted and I was looking forward to getting sucked into the story. However, it started off with promise but lost me a bit in the middle and concluded decently. I just had such higher hopes so I felt a bit let down. I am still trying to figure out how I really think, I think my main issue is that I didn't like the main character... meh!
So this is the story of Olivia, who used to be a child star, become a adult TV star, and then gets fired. However, 15 years ago she had her youngest sister gone missing. Have never found her she had a strong urge to take a case to find out what happened to all the girls who have gone missing on the "Dark Road". Doing that though may lead to places, and people, she never wanted to know or see.
Good: The Olivia character is pretty interesting. Her self doubt but strong will to find the truth is interesting. Her past is both horrifying and a bit odd (get to that later). I thought the pacing was solid, with very little filler, or any boring parts. The dialogue was also pretty strong, never feeling too forced.
Bad: That ending. It's so obvious around 1/3rd of the way there but it's the open ending part that is annoying. I don't mind a good mystery, I do mind a mystery without ANY closure, no matter the statement. I also thought most of the side characters were just okay, or boring.
Overall, a fun, neat, somewhat dirty, murder mystery. It's worth checking out if like the genre, but it's nothing mindblowing. A 3 out of 5.
I thoroughly enjoyed myself but I'm slightly mad, so that averages out to a nice 3 stars!
*SPOILERS BELOW*
The gist of the story is that Liv has been fired from her job as an actress and has now been hired to investigate the mysterious disappearances of multiple women in a remote California town.
This book had a good frenetic, heated pace. I would literally blink and I'd read another 100 pages. I also loved the bucolic, wholesome tourist trap vibe of the setting. I regret nothing!
Also, the good news is that the bowtie twiddling tea drinking Porter as the villain was the only satisfying conclusion, since he was the person our main character Liv spent the vast majority of her time with. The bad news is that he gets away with everything he did, so that's not 100% satisfying.
Also, there are not actually any murders in this book. Everybody you think has been murdered was just hiding under a new identity the whole time!
Finally, with all these 1 star reviews complaining about the UTTER DEPRAVITY and OFF-THE-CHARTS FILTH and NONSTOP ORGIES I was expecting some good smut but this smut is simply atrocious.
Here is a direct quote: "The rest of it happened as it happens. Shirts peeled off and pants were hastily yanked down. Breasts were cupped, fondled. Nipples licked, sucked."
MA'AM. Whom is getting whomst's nipples licked? You cannot just say "and then the main event"!!! What does a "a very fine penis" look like? Don't leave me hanging here, ma'am. If you want to read an apple pie surprise debauchery thriller with actually good smut, I recommend The Curse of White Oak Grove by Heather Crews instead.
However, I had fun and would read another by the author!
I am completely in love with this book. It's so intense and so creepy and just really, really good.
Like with Marisha Pessl's Night Film, the horror movies described are completely brutal and unflinching. Part of me wants to watch them and part of me is like, "You will never recover." ALSO like Night Film, the movies are a catalyst for a plot that is...well, also brutal and unflinching. Reading this book was a little bit like a fever dream. I wasn't sure what was happening or what was real.
This book isn't for everyone. There's a lot going on and there's a lot of violence. Jennifer Wolfe doesn't hold much back, and sensitive readers are going to have a hard time of it (although I suspect they're not going to get very far).
I was hooked immediately, though, and I am so in for everything else Jennifer Wolfe writes.

My Thoughts:
Thinking back on my year of reading, this may be the creepiest book that I've read all year. Watch The Girls straddles the line between thriller and horror - and it does it with absolute perfection. There are all of these horror elements throughout the book and creepy moments but it reads like a thriller. I don't know that I've read anything like it but I loved every minute of it! I'm actually a bit surprised that I haven't heard more buzz over this one with other readers if I'm being honest. Liv is quite the main character. She starts off in this book drinking heavily and it almost felt like the unreliable narrator element all over again that you see in so many books lately. I instantly didn't trust her and wasn't even sure if I liked her based off of the decisions she was making. But as the book goes on my viewpoint on her definitely began to change. I'm going to hit slightly spoiler-ey territory here so feel free to skip ahead so I don't ruin anything for you. I started to realize that something had happened to Liv all of those years ago when her sister disappeared that she wasn't remembering. I wasn't sure what but knew that it was important. I also started to trust her more the further I got into the book. There is all of these different things going on and as the reader I was trying to figure out how they all tied together. It was so completely tense and suspenseful! Plus the horror films that were filmed in this small town are there own element themselves in this book. They help to give this book the horror vibe that I got throughout. Plus, as we learn about the different movies you start to wonder if maybe they are playing out in real life. It was creepy let me tell you!
Overall, I enjoyed my time with this book immensely! It was dark and twisted which is everything that I enjoy in a thriller! My favorite part of this book was the sense of foreboding that was present throughout. There were times when I almost didn't want to keep reading because I just had that bad feeling but I literally could not stop reading. It's funny because I actually started reading this one and then it had to go back to the library unfinished (I was pretty early on in the book). I instantly put it back on hold and jumped in as soon I checked it back out. I'm so glad that I didn't let this one linger on my TBR because I enjoyed it so much! I just cannot wait to see what this author comes up with next! Fans of suspense, thriller, or horror should definitely give this book a shot. I can highly recommend!
Bottom Line: One of the creepiest thrillers I've read all year (if not the creepiest)!
Disclosure: I checked this book out from my local library. Thoughts are my own!
I only finished reading this book because a coworker forced it on me and I consider her a friend so I didn’t want to disappoint her by not finishing the book. She implored me to get to the end so I can discuss the violence that she assured me was abrupt and unspeakable. Instead I got some tepid regurgitation of a woman’s idea of male rape fantasy. This whole book felt like it was written by an edgy teenager who wanted to be mysterious and shocking.
A big problem for me was that, in narration, Liv Hendricks has a rich vocabulary but when she speaks to other characters she seems vapid and confused. She rambles on often and lists many possibilities of what others are thinking, planning, or not doing. I have never heard a narrator list so many superfluous details in my entire lifetime. At one point she comments on an old woman driving past her in another vehicle but why? What is the significance of this? On another occasion she makes sure to tell us that Sheriff Lot offered her a drink of water but goes into detail about how the water is stored in an insulated mug with a plastic straw protruding from the lid. Why so many details like this? It’s filler and should be cut from the story. The word “tentative” is used so many times and the way she describes facial expressions are often repeated ad nauseam.
Here are some examples of lines that made me put the book down and walk outside to catch some air:
“Her eyes like two cigarette burns in her face”
“He looked like a coal miner who had been trapped underground for a few days”
“My feet were cartoon anvils”
“My hands were shaking so hard the motion could hardly be described as shaking” - so why not describe it another way?????
“Anikka shook her head, backing away from him shaking her head.”
This is bad. Do not read.

Yeah, I don’t really know what all that was about, or why it was included after every time jump. Idgaf how many Twitter followers the main character has, or how many calories she eats. I get that her mom was mentally abusive and instilled that mindset into her from a young age, but the repetition of it throughout the whole story made me roll my eyes. Liv hated fat people, so I’m sure she’d just see me as a revolting whale. Cool.
Also, why is it that every thriller with a female lead is an alcoholic? And can we, for once, have a strong woman that doesn’t need saving every 5 minutes? I read a lot of thrillers and this character trope seems to be in 90% of them. It’s just exhausting. I didn’t like a single character, which made it hard to pick up after putting it down. It took me a while to get through this.
With that being said, I did enjoy the dark, twisted plot for the most part. I kept thinking about how much it read like a screenplay; I wasn’t surprised to read that the author worked in the film industry. I think this would work better as a movie.
Want your daily creep fed to you through a book? Check out Watch The Girls from your local library or bookstore! Seriously, the creep factor of this book is a solid 8 for the first half of the book.
For those of you who didn’t like this book, sorry not sorry. I loved this book. It was so obsessively creepy and dark in some parts. If James Wan or Blumhouse wanted to put this on screen and change some things to make it more horror, less thriller. Some gore. Sign. Me up. Boo boo.
This was a train wreck of a book. The only reason I finished was because it was a fast and easy read but I hated every second of reading it.
There were too many plot points to keep track of, the missing sister only came up when it was convenient for the plot and the twist was so convoluted that I gave up trying to understand it.
The sexual violence could have worked but in this case it was just for shock value and made the book cheap
I read this two years ago and I still think about how mad it made me. Maybe I should give it an extra star for that point alone, but I won't. Really intriguing premise, but the story was so damn disappointing. Too much unnecessary graphic sexual violence and an awful ending (the ending made me SO mad). I regret not DNFing this one!
Holy crap. I won this edition through Goodreads Giveaways, and it is not 320 pages! It's 385 pages, plus Acknowledgements. It was long; I usually aim for my books to be 350 pages or under, but when you get a free book you do not complain. And holy crap, was this worth it! There were a lot of, er, mature scenes, but the story, the material, is so rich and real it makes your regular life seem like the ultimate bliss. Sometimes I wish I were a famous actress... But then I read this book! No thank you! That is not the life for me! Going into this book, be suspicious of everyone! I've read a fair amount of mystery and can 25% of the time guess the culprit a good 50 pages before the actual reveal (okay maybe less), but this was just... WHAT? Wait, wait. Wait. WHAT! NO! But... *screams* I can't explain it any better without giving out spoilers, and I do now want to spoil the ending... (Wink for those of you who have read it!)
On a side note, even though Kron's films are all horrific and gruesome, they sound so interesting. I'm happy they exist in this book and not in real life, though. They cause so much trouble!
Another side note: the Internet sucks. People suck. Liv is a train-wreck but it wasn't her fault because everyone sucks! Jerks. What is wrong with the world?
I actually almost didn't want to even enter the Giveaway, however, because the back seemed too vague. Cool, interesting, but not worth my time. Yikes! I'm sorry, I sound so mean! I just feel sometimes like my to-read pile is way too big, and I'll never get to read all the stories I want to... I get really stressed sometimes about reading books. Plus, I have so many piles of books that I already own, just waiting to get looked at. Sometimes the guilt is too much. So now, when I add a book to my virtual shelf, it has got to be a good one. But that's why I love Goodreads and their amazing Giveaways! Or, maybe it's the opposite. I hate them because they keep giving me good books! GAH!
Anyways.
I am so glad that I found this beauty. Thank you so much, Goodreads, and Jennifer Wolfe.
3.5 ⭐️ this book was good but just disappointed that it took around the end to start getting good. kept me on my toes, but then the ending came & i’m still confused. i’ll take it as a fun ride & not something i expected to be grand.
