Boston Doms #3

Her Protector

Rate this book
Tony Angelico thinks he knows all about Dominants and submissives. After all, his two brothers are unapologetic Dominants with long-term submissive partners. Tony also knows that Tessa, the woman who works for him – the one girl he can't get out of his mind – is interested in the lifestyle. But he wants no part of bossing women around, let alone dominating them.

Tessa Damon craves the attention and discipline of a strong, dominant alpha male, but she's not been able to find what she's looking for. She's attracted to Tony, and can't help fantasizing about being taken over his knee for a sound spanking. She longs for the release and comfort of submitting to a man she can trust.

The night Tony decides to give it a shot, everything changes. But can Tessa be healed from her abusive past, and realize that she's worthy of love? Can they find a path that works for both of them? Will Tony finally understand that there is no one definition to cover every nuance of what being a Dominant means – not when his heart and soul know that he wants nothing more than to assume the role of Tessa's protector?

DISCLAIMER: This book contains explicit themes, including the spanking of adult women and other BDSM scenarios. The book also includes a self-harm scene involving 'cutting.' If such material is likely to offend or trigger you in some way, please do not read.

Sweet Romance

Tony isn't kinky. Not like his brothers. But with his naturally dominant personality, he hopes he can be just enough to please the sweet Tess.
There is lightest bit of kink in this sweetly endearing story.
I love this series because while it can be read as a standalone, the whole gang makes appearances. It's awesome still reading about all the others.

4 stars! Darker themed but inspirational scenes

While this could probably be read as a stand-alone, I HIGHLY recommend it be read in series order for maximum reader satisfaction. There are multiple reoccurring characters, consecutive timelines and overarching themes.

** If you have not read any of the previous stories in this series, the following will contain spoilers. There are also multiple scenes that may be difficult for sensitive readers involving MINORS UNDER 18 and SELF MUTILATION. I have included examples below. **

I liked this story, especially learning more about Tessa and her tragic background. I know this is just a story to some, but there is just something inspiring to read about someone overcoming their history. Meeting her sister, Nora, and the things Tessa has done to support her was all good.

I struggled giving this 5 stars, not because of the grammatical issues, but because of Tony. Specifically his relationship with Val. I understand this was the authors’ attempt to create circumstances that directly opposed what Tessa needed as a submissive, but it just didn’t work for me. I think it could have been accomplished in a way that didn’t make Tony look like one of the stupidest, weakest, and most incompetent shallow heroes in a story ever. No competent businessman would have tolerated any of Val’s actions since the start of the series, much less someone with his background, family and friends.

There are, like I stated above, some grammatical issues throughout the story, but nothing too egregious. Primarily there are missing words, incorrect word choices, incorrect punctuation and a typo. I uploaded a few examples I highlighted to Goodreads.com for anyone interested. I mention these for readers such as myself that visualize the story as it is read, because errors interrupt the flow.

This was interesting take on a dbsm story. The male who was never interested in being a Dom takes on a submissive and learns to be a dominant. I understand his mental struggle with the issue of becoming a dom and taking on a role that she needs. But what is annoying about his waffling is that her has so many resources around him to ask for help and guidance in how to become a good dom. Basically his whole family and yet he asks NO ONE for help. He knows what she needs and yet does not ask help from the people who know to to give her what she needs and can teach him the proper ways. His statement at the end, while true is also a bit off putting, about how much work it is to be a dom and how he basically has no desire to put in that type of energy.

I did however, every much enjoy the conversation Tony had with John (Paul's sub)

This series has really focused more on the spanking part of a relationship than anything else. I feel like spanking is mentioned every other page. I realize that is a kink for some but not for me, so I've not been really impressed with this series so far. I keep wanting to like them but they fall a little flat for me. There is an element of a story and plot and I keep wanting more from it but the drama is resolved so fast. There was also a lot of plot elements that could have been expanded on that were only mildly dealt with: cutting, the drug cartel, her mom, the kidnapping, her mental struggles. Just when they are going to deal with one issue, five more happen all at once and then only one of those issues is truly dealt with while the other plot lines get left out or are resolved with one line.

So how does it make sense that when she thinks about cutting herself and talks to him about it he threatens to spank her, which spanking has become her new outlet to release her emotion. She feels she 'needs' to be spanked, so to me, it sounds like he is saying 'if you cut yourself, I will reward you with a spanking'

I did enjoy the dual narration, but not so much the narrators themselves. Their voices were almost too light for the actual tone of the book.

ANOTHER FANFREAKINGTASTIC BOSTON DOMS BOOK!!

There are certain romances that you think you know what to expect going in, but then at about the midway point you are totally blindsided and you think to yourself. Umm…HELLO?! I did not have a clue how unbelievably awesome this book would be, or the exquisite emotional journey it would take me on.

Such is the case with HER PROTECTOR by talented writing duo Jane Henry and Maisy Archer. I expected a sweet, sexy and heartwarming read that would scintillate my senses, give me warm fuzzy feels and set my pulse racing. But this book literally Blew. Me. Away! There was nothing predictable or typical about this Dom/Sub romance, book three in the swoonalcious Boston Doms series, and the depth of heartthrobbing emotion this book invoked in me was beyond words! HER PROTECTOR has everything I dream of finding within the pages of a satisfying romance and so much more. It is passionate. Sexy. Charming. Breathtakingly romantic. Achingly emotional. Naughty. And left me with a sappy grin on my face!

But first…. full disclosure. To be perfectly honest, I was worried that I might not love this book as much as its predecessor, HIS SUBMISSIVE, because I thought maybe Tony would not be my cup of tea because he is not a “textbook Dom.” He is sweeter, gentler and much more laid back than his FIERCELY Alpha older brothers, Dominic (hero of MY DOM) and Matteo (hero of HIS SUBMISSIVE). I am typically drawn to strict, bossy, take charge heroes who are always in command but guess what? I was wrong again. As it turns out, there is not one size fits all in terms of mouthwateringly sexy Doms and by the end of this book, Tony not only came into his own but he totally won me over!

In a nutshell, this is the story of Tony Angelico, the owner of Cara, the restaurant where Tessa Damon works as his manager. When a highly toxic situation at home leaves Tessa without a place to live, Tony graciously opens up his home—and his heart—to his pretty, auburn-haired employee. He recently broke up with his clingy ex, Val, but always had a thing for Tessa, and the feeling was more than mutual but she has some major family drama and personal strife going on that makes commitment difficult, and besides she is a submissive and Tony is not a natural dominant or into the BDSM scene like his older brothers. Even if she wanted to, Tess could not turn off her submissive side despite the fact that she was wildly attracted to Tony. To her shock and delight, he was willing to try to tap into his Dominant side but they would follow a different playbook. Through the course of the story, as their relationship evolves, he ultimately not only becomes the Dom, and the loving partner, Tess wants but also the one she desperately NEEDS.

Despite their differences and ongoing challenges, it soon became abundantly clear that Tessa and Tony were a match made in Heaven! Tony was a dreamy hero--sweet and gentlemanly but alpha delicious in his own right. He might not be a control freak who set a bunch of stringent rules for his Sub and turn her over his knee for the merest infraction (and in actuality he loved Tess’s saucy mouth and irreverent mannerisms and had absolutely no desire to douse her spirit or get her to bend to his will) but that’s not to say he wasn’t strong and protective and fiercely loyal in his own right. And make no mistake…Tony is hardly a pushover! Sure he might be more naturally inclined to be gentle and tender but when the situation warranted he could be just as macho and formidable as his older brothers, not to mention commanding in the bedroom. Ultimately, Tony knew how to fulfill his brave, beautiful Tessa’s every desire, and was so in tune with her every feeling and inhibition and fantasy it was a glorious thing to behold. And the spanking scenes were not only scorching hot but so beautifully cathartic, especially the pinnacle one at the end which was so poignant it literally brought tears to my eyes!!

Tessa was kind of a hot mess during parts of this book and I loved her for it! She is a very multi-faceted heroine, equal parts sass and aching vulnerability. She had more than her fair share of flaws and hardships, stemming from her dysfunctional upbringing but she was strong and capable, worked hard and loved deeply and faced her feelings of unworthiness and struggles head on. And there were insecurities and setbacks along the way which is always the hallmark of a well-crafted, beautifully nuanced plot. I adore wounded heroines who are also strong and resilient and Tessa was both. Through Tony’s unconditional love, guidance and acceptance she learned to embrace her “Crazy” and find coping mechanisms to deal with her negative impulses and healthy outlets to channel her stress.

The fact that HER PROTECTOR explored an unorthodox Dom/Sub dynamic was one of the main things I relished about it. I love how neither of these characters was 100% confident about their relationship and that they made up the rules as they went along. Ultimately, they both had a lot to learn about themselves, their sexual kinks and desires, romantic compatibility, and by book’s end, I loved how through trial and error Tony fully evolved and embraced his "inner Dom." In fact, no one was more surprised than Tony to discover that being strong, dominant and firmly in control wasn’t remotely about being overbearing or a dictator, but rather about being nurturing and protective and leading by example when you were with the RIGHT partner.

The ongoing BOSTON DOMS series hits my sweet spot in more ways than one. It has a perfect balance of deliciously steamy interludes, family drama, sweet and humorous banter and lively interactions with all the Doms and their beloved Subs. Plus, since I am not a big fan of hardcore BDSM books and tend to get squeamish with erotic romances that include lots of pain play, sex toys, harsh implements, raunchy kink and severe discipline scenarios, I appreciate that this series is not about that. At its core, it is about the loving relationships and sweet, sexy, mutually satisfying power exchanges between the Doms and their Subs and the way these Angelico men worship, respect, take care of, protect and possess their women is spectacularly beautiful. And the countdown has begun for Slay and Alice’s story, which is next!!!

My takeaway? HER PROTECTOR, penned by two mega dynamite authors, was perfectly divine in every way. A must read!

5+++ spankalicous stars!!!

Well written romance with good character development and a page-turning plot. The story is humorous, heart-warming and deliciously sexy, with steamy erotic spankings.

There are also discipline spankings, and while not at all preachy, the author manages to convey information about the needs of some adults who've grown up in bleak circumstances.

I really love this book because it validates some reasons people crave discipline spankings, by means of an entertaining story.

I'm not a good writer, so the rest of my review is likely to bore a lot of people. Feel free to skip this section and jump straight to the book. ;)

Jane Henry distinguishes this story by explaining why discipline spankings can be attractive to someone who grew up afraid to go home. When the place which is supposed to be your refuge is instead a source of pain and fear, it often follows that you grow up believing you're branded by the darkness of that place, and that you'll repel anyone, "normal."

It's easy to slip into self-harm as a means of releasing the pressures associated with surviving while convinced you're unlovable. A spanking can ground one from spiraling into the panic which ensues from the belief that your life has no purpose but to protect a dependent. This is especially true when you're struggling to keep your head above the poverty line, and unable to provide the people you love with what you believe is your responsibility.

This was a good story that explained how D/s had no right & wrong, no true fit for every couple. It showed how Tess had an issue dealing with her problems and pain and used to use "cutting" but had found a better way to deal with it through D/s and spankings and how she might revert to her old ways if she couldn't get what she needed; this was portrayed well and how there was no shame or crazy involved; even if she was afraid that's what Tony might see when he learned of her past. It showed how Tony didn't believe or even understand what D/s was and & wanted no part of it until he thought that was what he needed to keep Tess and he wanted to try for her. Could he be what she needed and be Her Protector and her Dom? Could she still be strong and submit and be the good girl Tony wanted with the past she had? This was a more emotional story than the others and not really up my alley as I like a little more action (& I'm not talking about the sexy kind here as this story had plenty of that just like the other Boston Dom books) but it was a sweeter story with Tony and Tess and just as romantic as the others but in its own way. Like the other stories the editing was well done with few errors. I would recommend this book.

This one was a 4.5 star book. Tony was naturally dominant, but not a Dom per se. Tessa originally though Tony would not be able to provide her with what she needed as a submissive. He proved her wrong. They discovered what worked best for them. Tony also discovered or uncovered his true nature.

Tessa was strong in her own right, but you could feel her pain. Tony stepped up, had her back, allowed her to lean on him, stood against her mom, protected both Tessa and Nora, and helped her heal her pain.

You also get some tension, danger, and suspense in this book. Tessa and her sister Nora did not have a happy upbringing or life as children, and it hadn't changed much as they got older. Nora finds herself in a bad situation, and the Boston Doms ride to the rescue.

I read this book via KU.

Is that in the rule book?

If you've been following the "Boston Doms" series by Jane Henry then you know Tony has never been into the BDSM lifestyle. It's never been something he was interested in nor could he wrap his brain around all the rules. So when his girlfriend broadcasts Tess' proclivity to go to a BDSM club at a wedding rehearsal of all places he was a bit surprised to say the least. There are so many emotional twists and turns in this storyline. In full disclosure, if you have any self harm triggers, consider carefully, although there is a happily ever after ending.

Toned Down from Mild

Tessa and Tony are supposed to show another side of power exchange, one without so many definitions or roles, but fulfilling both partners', needs. Overall, it was a good read and mostly successful in broadening ideas of what these relationships could be. But the combination of the avoidance of terms/definitions, and the emphasis on internal conflict within the characters' relationships, toned the whole, down to a quieter book than that previous two. Not bad, just different.

Oh my what to say about this 3rd book of the Boston Doms. First you can read it as a standalone but....

Tony just got out of a relationship where he was bending to his ex's will. That wasn't what either of them needed. So their relationship combust. He was attracted to Tessa but didn't think he could give her what she needed. Turn out they both were wrong. This book shows how trust and communication is necessary for a good relationship.

This book hit an emotional cord with me. Knowing someone who used to "cut" themselves, I usually steer away from stories that have this in it, but this was a refreshing and honest look without the shaming that is usually involved in self harm. I LOVED the way it was presented. Very intense in parts but so far, the best of the series!!

I knew that Tony was a closet Dom! I really enjoyed watching Tony find his place it the group and Tessa was adorable. The only thing that kind of threw me was how Tony went from borderline insulting and clueless about the lifestyle to embracing it. It didn't detract from the book it was just a little jarring.

Spankings

Wow! That was a powerful story. The characters were so likeable. Tony and Tess were wonderful. The development of the relationships was so intense. The discussion of how Tess used cutting herself as a coping mechanism brought the issue out in the open and maybe Will be helpful to others. I really enjoyed this good read.

Great read

This was a great read for me. The upbringing those poor sisters must have went through and yet they both turned out amazing. I love the Angelico brothers and their tight bond.
Tony is dreamy and despite not being a true dom at heart he certainly meets Tessas needs quite effectively.

Learning to Dominate

This is a sweet story about learning to be happy, and accept who you are. I like the over all storyline, but for my personal tastes the sex scenes seem tame for BDSM... I am not sure what it is but I liked the story but there just seemed to be something not quite there in the sexual interaction. I am picky though and it is a very good story.

Tony & Tess

Interesting setup and background histories. Love the resolution of how Tony could be what she needed without going full dom/sub with her when he wasn't really involved in the lifestyle. He loved her enough (was alpha enough) to protect and give her what she needed when dealing with the difficulties of her life.
