I found this book to be an excellent introduction to the concepts of Shamanic Journeying. There is much wisdom contained in this practical guide. I was especially taken with Cowan's reminder to all of us that Western rationalism with its emphasis on the duality of experience is largely responsible for the ever-increasing width between the sacred and the non-sacred. He reminds us that our ancestors found "all life experience to be a finely woven tapestry that was considered sacred." He summarizes what shamanism can come to mean in the life of a citizen of the West in the following way: "We live in a materialistic, agnostic culture where those who are not sure what believe substitute faith in material possessions to give their lives solidarity, and those who do know what they believe become intolerant and suspicious of others who believe differently. Perhaps this is the darkness of life that urgently needs illumination: the shadowy landscape of intolerance, bigotry, consumerism and heartless entertainment, all tending to smother the soul's eternal flame. Shamanic practice can keep that flame burning brightly and light up the contemporary landscape."
Reading Cowan's book, I was given a whole series of methods and techniques for bringing that shamanic light into my own life; ways to journey in each of the realms, Upper, Middle and Lower, ways to bring nature back into my life in ways that are in harmony with it rather than at odds; even ways to meet and merge with my own ancestors. I highly recommend this book for anyone considering undertaking a shamanic practice of their own.
Taking from all the shamanic practices of the world, this book talks about how to develop a personal spiritual practice by mixing elements of shamanism with inherited traditions and current religious commitments. The book explores the central role of power animals and spirit teachers, visionary techniques for exploring the extraordinary in everyday life, elements of childhood spirituality including songs, secret hiding places, power spots, and imaginary power figures and journey to an ancestral shaman to recover lost knowledge.
This was a clear and insightful introduction to the daily practices and beliefs of "core shamanism," which is a modern interpretation of indigenous shamanism. The author takes pains repeatedly to encourage white readers to learn more about the shamanistic past of their native cultures instead of appropriating those of others, which I appreciated. Overall, I was surprised by core shamanism; what I assumed was "making stuff up" was really a form of mindfulness meditation for observing nature, dreams, and visions.
Most interesting and efficient read on the subject. If you're looking for a read that will directly impact and help with your practice, this is the one you should get. Very insightful, and helpful. The author has an open-mind and a shattered ego... as he should, and this is reflected very well in his approach.
Tom Cowan is a gifted writer who takes you through the levels of the spiritual world of the Shaman. Each chapter addresses a level, the meanings, both tangible and symbolic. Practices such as journeying, drumming and other mysteries are covered. Another core curriculum for the serious Shamanic Practitioner.
Is pretty much all about journeying with power animals. Which is not too different than most Shamanism books but it doesn't really talk about stories at all which is what draws me to shamanism
I found this a really interesting book. I am not so sure about the adaptation of shamanism to a modern western context but I have seen quite a lot worthy of some contemplation during times I have spent with so called primitive peoples. I have also had some personal experiences, in the jungle mostly that is evoked by some of the author's observations. There is also much here that comes up in other frameworks, or approaches to the spiritual path. WE all have much more in common than we might think.
This is the best guidebook for exploring shamanism that I have found. If you start with one book, start here, and if you're a seasoned shamanic practitioner, there will probably be some new ideas for you in its words. I love that it's not just about the three world journeys, but also meeting spirits of place/nature, working with children, having a group, and that there is a focus on Celtic tradition to give white Westerners some ideas about exploring their native paths.
Over the past several months, I have read many books on shamanism and this is the best of the lot. I'm not sure how to describe the feeling I had reading it, other than to say that where other books on soul flight might seem heady, this book is earthy - the journey practices are grounded, well-explained, and thoughtful. I had no trouble following them. Plus, there are more journey ideas in this book than I found in others. I highly recommend this book.
A wonderful insight into a world by it's self. Almost a course one can take and discover the enlightenment held secret within the tribe. As a Cherokee, to discover the road map to peace, comfort and silent well being was something I had often search for. I bought three copies to share the knowledge I had found without sharing my actual book. A wonderful tribute to the culture and introduction to those who are seeking.
Same as per usual with Shaman books. I like aspects of it, but I'm still hesitant to believe that just anyone can be a Shaman. I still feel like it's something the gods choose, something your DNA is wired to be, something you have to be able to live inside of a community.
So little space to say what I learned from this book. I have given away 10 copies of this book. Such a fantastic insight into life and spirituality and the shamanic journey.
I would like to get a copy of this book and after my miraculously being cured of insomnia, I will start doing some dream work. (please please please universe)
