Warning: aggravating, indecisive, selfish, teenagers are included in this story!

As the mother of two girls, I can attest that Monica Murphy has completely nailed the hive inducing drama of being a confused teenager in this first book of her new series. This story does end with a cliffhanger and should seriously come with a coupon to the local liquor store.
”My two best friends messing around after he messed around with me. No, no, no.”
The writing and delivery on the other hand is truly on point and though I hated the thoughts and actions by these three best friends in this story I equally couldn’t stop reading it. Days later, and I find myself still thinking on these hot mess teens, Olivia, Dustin, and Emily, the three best friends who all have secrets of hooking up with Dustin and then adding to the mix the hot new football player. It should be easy, but IT IS NOT!!
”We’re all messing around with each other. And it’s a freaking disaster waiting to happen.”
Our heroine Olivia returns home after a few weeks in the summer with her father’s family and learns that her best friends Em and Dustin have been hanging out with the popular crowd. She meets Ryan the hot new football player who seems to be with Em but wants her and oh yeah finds out that she’s not the only one who has secretly been hooking up with Dustin.
”You came home from Oregon and both Ryan and Dustin didn’t care about me anymore. All they cared about is you.”
The heroine Olivia is NOT very likable nor is Em and Dustin. Dustin though grew the most in this story. When this three way friendship blows up Olivia makes a friend with a very likable girl named Amanda who is a great character and her love interest Jordan Tuttle gave the story the swoon factor. Still, this isn’t Amanda’s story so a reader will have to wait till late in the story for Olivia to decide who she wants and then change her mind back and forth a few million more times RYAN or DUSTIN…
I honestly don’t know what friends will like this story and survive these three friends and their selfish drama but it was very well put together and told. Expect to want to choke these kids and then days later start to wonder when the next book in the series is released.

Nothing like teenage angst and drama! Monica Murphy brings a large dose of both in her newest mature YA read Just Friends. Just a heads up, this book has many unlikable characters. I spent a large part of it just sitting here shaking my head waiting for the next crazy thing to happen, but it was completely unputdownable and captivated me from the start. It reminded me of the times I was addicted to those high school tv dramas (think 90210, Gossip Girl etc) and I would just binge watch no matter how many crazy things happened.
Olivia has two best friends. Em and Dustin. She is forced to spend the summer before her senior year in Oregon with her father. Two months away from her best friends. It seems like an eternity. Right before school is ready to start, she comes back home. Everything should be the same, right? There is Em. Her long time best friend. They’re inseparable. But now Em is drinking and doing god knows what at all the parties they go to and things aren’t the same. Then there is Dustin. Dustin and Liv have a strange relationship. They’re ‘Just Friends’ but it’s clear that he wants more. She’s undecided though they have hooked up.
If that wasn’t complicated enough, there is Ryan. The new guy who appeared this summer. Ryan and Em seem to have a little something going on, but it’s apparent that Ryan is way more into Olivia then he is with Em. Oh, what a confusing and tangled web we weave!
So as you can tell, it’s sort of a hot mess right now. As school is starting, Olivia doesn’t know what she wants. Dustin feels safe. She’s attracted to him but doesn’t want to ruin their friendship. She feels something strong for Ryan, but is it just lust? Can she trust him? She finds out quickly trust is not something easy to come by. When Olivia finds out she’s been betrayed by those closest to her, everything changes.
Some of Olivia’s thoughts annoyed me. She stressed me out at times, but like I said before, I was totally addicted to her story and didn’t want to stop reading. Olivia and Dustin, I have mixed feelings about. Em is just ugh for me, and Ryan… well, the verdict is still out on him. Olivia did make friends with a girl named Amanda and she is by far the most likable of the bunch. I could connect with her better than any of the other characters, perhaps because I was more like Amanda in high school than any of the others.
I have mixed feelings about this one, but overall I did like it and I’ll be reading the next. I need to know whats going to happen with these crazy kids! I’m anxious to see where Amanda’s story will go, and of course… which guy Olivia will choose (if she ever does choose LOL)

You can’t have us both.”If you’re looking for a story with lots of drama, frenemies, love triangles (or maybe a love square) and you can handle the angst- this will be the book for you! Just be prepared to binge read, because you won’t want to put it down!

There is something that shines in a young adult (YA) romance. Maybe it’s the movement, the faster pace, the engagement of the story. Perhaps it’s the childhood innocence resonating through the story. It could be the trip down memory lane it takes to those teenage years, sparking good and trying times. The glue that usually cements YA stories—with tough topics, some sexy scenes, and lots of depth—together is hope. Who doesn’t need a little hope in their life?
While I’ve read many college romances in the past few years, I can’t recall the last time when I hit the ‘rewind button’ even further and read a high school romance: a full-on young adult story. With adrenaline surging through me, I was excited to be reunited with a true YA romance.
Just Friends came to life before my eyes as I fell into a deep coma of captivation, fully immersed and intoxicated, where I felt every word I read. I feel deep into this slightly dark and deceptive tale, so deep that Just Friends found my lost high school years. I felt my teenage years flash before my eyes. Those years when I was a rebel against my parents…against the world…where I knew everything and they knew nothing.
Fast and furiously, Just Friends became my fix…my fascination. I could not put this all-consuming story down. This alluring tale was my addiction, my angst, and my amazing escape. These characters wrapped me into their web of deceit and dangerous consequences from playing with ones’ hearts where I fell into their tumultuous triangle of messy love. Oh did I LOVE every messy minute!
“The problem with messing around with your best friend who happens to be a boy is that they form certain expectations. We’ve crossed the line. In his eyes, there’s no going back. He wants more. He wants it—me—all the time. I think I want that too, but I’m not sure.”
Once a girl messed around with a boy, one of her best friends. Then that boy best friend messed around the with other girl best friend. Their triangle of friendship became one of fraud. A new boy enters the mix, messing with two of the best friends in the triangle, making for one screwed up square of deception.

I did not expect to become engrossed and entangled in story of high schoolers…but oh I was so tangled and twisted up in every part of this tale! I did not expect to fall in insta-love with Just Friends…but I FELL IN LOVE SO HARD with this spellbinding story! I did not expect Just Friends to be my new favorite Monica Murphy romance but it is now my favorite story by this amazing author!
Intoxicating and intense, Just Friends is a coming of age romance that bleeds angst, penetrating the heart and soul, where you’re thrust full throttle into this tender yet turbulent tale of first love. This story tormented me in the best way where I welcomed every ounce of angst! My pulse pounded. My heart beat out of my chest. My feelings flowed all over the pages. I WAS ALL IN…hook…line…sinker! I sunk so hard, fell so hard, and LOVE THIS STORY SO HARD! Just Friends is JUST AMAZING!!! I’m dying for the sequel like yesterday.

Starting off this review by saying that despite the YA genre classification, this book is not for the younger audience. Lots of cheating, drugs, sex, and promiscuity in general. The characters reminded me of Gossip Girl and 90210, the people unlikable yet intriguing and their story hard to put down.
Summer's almost over and Olivia is back from a two-month exile at her father's place in Oregon. If things were boring and uneventful in Oregon, it's the exact opposite now that she's home. Em, one of her best friends, is suddenly hanging out with the popular group and is drinking and getting high more than usual. Dustin is still obviously into her, and after a few hook ups, he wants to take their friendship to the next level. Then there's Ryan, the new guy.
Dustin is the safe bet. Being with him is comfortable. But Ryan is something else entirely. Olivia doesn't know who to choose. That is until she finds out Em and Dustin have been hooking up when she was away. Their friendship crumbles, and everything else goes to shit.
Ryan is a conundrum. When he first showed up in the book, he's this cocky guy who blatantly flirts with Liv despite the fact that he's hooking up with Em. He's obviously attracted to Liv, but no one really knows if he's in it for the chase or if he's genuinely interested in Liv. By the end of the first book, I still can't fully paint his personality.
I don't know what to think of Em. I know she needs help, and I don't know if I should feel bad for her, but she's done a lot of fucked up things. I wanted to smack her.
I don't like Liv, but I can't get enough of her. I wanted to drag her away from all the bad decisions she's making, give her a talking to, and I don't know, I don't know! Her friends and everyone else tell her that something is bad, but she doesn't believe them and pretty much makes decision using her vagina. Seriously. This girl is a perpetually horny child. She knows how fucked up it is to get it on with either Ryan or Dustin, but she still makes out with both of them.
I wanted to spritz most of the characters with cold water like people sometimes do when their dogs misbehave. Stop. Sit down and cool the fuck off. I try to refrain from swearing in my reviews, but damn it, these kids are all hot messes.
Amanda is probably the most decent of the bunch. She's Liv's new friend after the Liv-Dustin-Em fallout. She's the one who tries to steer Liv clear of the questionable things Liv wants to do, although she's not successful all the time. I'm happy the next book will be written in Amanda's POV. I really want to know more about her and Tuttle.
Despite my dislike for some of the characters' and their actions, I want to commend Monica Murphy for writing such real flawed teenagers. I'm more of an Amanda than a Liv and an Em, but I did know people like them. I'd like to say the drama was farfetched, but then I'd be lying.
Over all, reading Just Friends is like watching a car crash in the middle of a highway. You know it's going to be messy, but you just can't look away.
The cliffhanger made me scream, and I'm itching to get my hands on the sequel! I want to know what happens next!!!

This review is going to be a bit different than any (or all, basically) of my others, and here's why: When I finished Just Friends, I had a multitude of thoughts swirling around in my head that just wouldn't stop, so I made a quick point form list of these to later expand upon. Instead of diving in the deep end with this review, I'm simply going to take those unedited, immediate thoughts that I had and touch on those. They were my true initial reactions, so that's what I'm going to share. This review many not always have a positive connotation, but know that this comes from a good place because I generally enjoy Monica's work. Just Friends is addicting, will leave you reeling, and is 100% unputdownable.
1. I hated all of the MCs.
I honestly can't think of any redeeming qualities amongst the four main characters. Maybe Dustin, but that's a real slight maybe. I honestly didn't care for any of them! So vain, egotistical, idiotic and ignorant! Every one of them. They made stupid, ridiculous, decisions and then even worse ones, then got mad when the world didn't magically become better. They're rude, have an air of self importance and are in need a serious slice of humble pie.
2. I'm feeling slightly stabby.
You know what it's like when your just so frustrated that you need to hit something or scream? Yeah, that's me (I'm no actually going to stab someone, no need to fret). I was so hooked on this book but was getting progressively more aggravated the farther and farther I read. By the last chapter, I was practically irate.
3. Do you like OTT drama? How about OTT drama with more drama piled on top? Here you go. I've also slapped on a side of drama.
Um. Yeah... I've seen some people comment that a reader can't be upset over this drama because the book revolves around teenagers and high school and that's how things are these days. My question: WHAT KIND OF SCHOOL DID YOU GO TO?! It isn't this aggressive! I'm only 5 years out of high school, I still have a pretty good grasp of how it went down, and I guarantee it was nothing like this. This story is so drama filled and over the top, I thought my eyes might get stuck from rolling in my head.
4. My head hurts.
See the ending of #3. Lots of eye rolling, lots of scoffing, lots of 'Oh, you've got to be kidding me', seems to equal a headache.
5. Cliffhanger.
I think I heard somewhere early on that this book ends in a cliffhanger and you know what my thought was? COOL! I love cliffhangers! I seem to be one of the 1% of people who do. I love not knowing what to expect and being left hanging, but the ending of Just Friends didn't seem to do that for me. Sure it's an open ending, but within about 5 seconds I already came up with a fairly plausible explanation/solution, so.... Yeah. I'm not exactly losing my mind over here waiting to find out.
6. I don't want to admit it but I will read the next book, I want to know how that ending plays out. Even though I want to sucker punch 67% of the cast.
*le sigh* Completely ignoring Liv, Em, Dustin and Ryan because I went over my dislike for them. I did actually enjoy and was intrigued with the entire Amanda and Jordan storyline. The only thing I can think to relate this to is a Britney Spears song. Probably one of the newer ones though, cause her old stuff was awesome. 1. I hated all of the MCs.
I honestly can't think of any redeeming qualities amongst the four main characters. Maybe Dustin, but that's a real slight maybe. I honestly didn't care for any of them! So vain, egotistical, idiotic and ignorant! Every one of them. They made stupid, ridiculous, decisions and then even worse ones, then got mad when the world didn't magically become better. They're rude, have an air of self importance and are in need a serious slice of humble pie.
2. I'm feeling slightly stabby.
You know what it's like when your just so frustrated that you need to hit something or scream? Yeah, that's me (I'm no actually going to stab someone, no need to fret). I was so hooked on this book but was getting progressively more aggravated the farther and farther I read. By the last chapter, I was practically irate.
3. Do you like OTT drama? How about OTT drama with more drama piled on top? Here you go. I've also slapped on a side of drama.
Um. Yeah... I've seen some people comment that a reader can't be upset over this drama because the book revolves around teenagers and high school and that's how things are these days. My question: WHAT KIND OF SCHOOL DID YOU GO TO?! It isn't this aggressive! I'm only 5 years out of high school, I still have a pretty good grasp of how it went down, and I guarantee it was nothing like this. This story is so drama filled and over the top, I thought my eyes might get stuck from rolling in my head.
4. My head hurts.
See the ending of #3. Lots of eye rolling, lots of scoffing, lots of 'Oh, you've got to be kidding me', seems to equal a headache.
5. Cliffhanger.
I think I heard somewhere early on that this book ends in a cliffhanger and you know what my thought was? COOL! I love cliffhangers! I seem to be one of the 1% of people who do. I love not knowing what to expect and being left hanging, but the ending of Just Friends didn't seem to do that for me. Sure it's an open ending, but within about 5 seconds I already came up with a fairly plausible explanation/solution, so.... Yeah. I'm not exactly losing my mind over here waiting to find out.
6. I don't want to admit it but I will read the next book, I want to know how that ending plays out. Even though I want to sucker punch 67% of the cast.
*le sigh* Completely ignoring Liv, Em, Dustin and Ryan because I went over my dislike for them. I did actually enjoy and was intrigued with the entire Amanda and Jordan storyline. With this being said, I'd be interested to read the next book in the series and see what's going on with them, as well as how that ending plays out in relation to these two.

Admittedly I’m always hesitant when it comes to Young Adult novels, but there was something about Just Friends that made me throw caution to the wind and step into the storm that was teen angst. Slated as mature Young Adult (which it definitely is) my hesitation quickly gave way to curiosity as I got swept along in the sexed up teen drama. I’m still trying to dissect how Monica Murphy was able to write about characters that made me both want to tear my hair out but also have a sleep over and take turns braiding each other’s hair.
After spending most her summer with her father in Oregon with his new family, Olivia Hudson can’t wait return home and back into the fold of her two best friends, Emily and Dustin. Her slight hesitation comes from the fact that before she left, herself and Dustin had become over friendly with one another and she becomes worried it will confuse the dynamic of their trio. It’s a hesitation Dustin doesn’t share as he would like nothing more than to evolve their relationship.
He acts like he wants forever and that terrifies me. We’re too young. Things can change.
Once home all hopes of falling back into their routine are soon dashed. In her absence there has been a new addition, Ryan. Emily is smitten with him and much to her annoyance Olivia is too. The friction between Dustin and Ryan palpable as it seems Ryan has his eye on Olivia also.
“He’s hurting Em right now. Can’t you see? He doesn’t care about her. And he won’t care about you either. Not like I do, Livvy.”
If life couldn’t get more complicated enough, Livvy learns of a betrayal that shatters the group completely. With the friend code no longer in existence, there is nothing to stop Livvy from shooting Ryan down. My first reactions to Ryan were not positive. He came across as creepy at times and I would have liked nothing more than to wipe the smug perma smile off his face.
Amanda is a character who becomes not only Olivia’s saving grace but that of the reader too. In a world where indecision and he said-she said reign, she brings stability and genuine likability to proceedings. It also helps that her sub plot story with fellow student Jordon adds further dimension and addiction to the story.
Just Friends is messy, aggravating, but incredibly addictive reading. It’s the drama you want no part of, but love to hear all about.

4 confusing as hell stars
Freaking hell, what have I just read?? I don't even know what to say... First off it kind of felt like being in high school getting mixed up in the wrong crowd and not knowing what to do about it? Mmmm and friends, (not the best kind of friends because they rile you up the wrong way) but friends all the same. Yet this also unputtadownable and addictive.. I read late. But ohhhh MYYY godddd how annoying are these characters..
So what's it about?
Olivia/Liv had a summer away from her best friends to spend with her dad and on her return hoping to enjoy some time with her friends whom she's missed she is met with Em. But a different Em, a party Em who drinks, smokes and sleeps and messes around with the new football guy Ryan.
Gah Ryan is a douchebag, an asshole he goes after what he wants, he plays the game but he is also sweet at the same time. The perfect mix for the new footballer in town YESS?? One to mix the dynamics a tad yes??
And then there's Dustin who is 'just friends' but more and then the one who hurt her...
Will she won't she will she won't she...
I actually can't say I like Livvy that much she was In the middle of this train wreck.... Making bad choices, no communication with her friends but worrying herself silly.
That said, she has a new friend Amanda that kind of reminds me of the girl in American Pie who's in Band camp!! The likeable friend... So there's a tiny bit of leverage in this read. Something to breathe just a tad...
So anyway yeh I'm a tad confused by this story, it reminds me of high school, making friends and unmaking friends. A book of lessons I suppose, it's the course of growing up.. But it's one hell of a ride, heartbreaking, exciting, thrilling. And actually unputtadownable but you will get riled up in the process. And the stories not quite completed yet... So I'm praying they'll grow up a tad in the next book.
Lastly I will say I did enjoy it, this is my first Monica Murphy book and it won't be my last it just gave me a whole dose of the feels.

Just Over It!

WTF did I just allow myself to read? Me and this book... Ugh! We clashed until the very last page. This was just the most annoying book with the most obnoxious characters, that I have EVER read. That's saying a lot, I hardly ever give below 3 stars.
WHY is this a book?
What was the point of this messy bullshit?
It follows three best friends or asinine children, as I like to call them. There's Livvy, who's POV the book is in, Emily and Dustin.
Livvy comes home after summer break and realizes a lot had changed since she left. Before her departure, she was fooling around with one of her best friend, Dustin, but neglects to tell Emily. Emily spent her entire summer slutting it up with this new guy, Ryan.
When Liv comes home, she tell Emily about her secret relationship with mutual friend Dustin — only to find Emily slept with him first over the summer and neither of them told her. Livvy gets ridiculously pissed, feeling betrayed, wait... Didn't you just do the same thing, silly? After ditching her best friend, Liv moves in on Emily's Ryan. This guy is such an asshole, so completely arrogant and full of himself, I could hardly stand it.
What follows, is a series of teen drama that would have put 90210 to shame. I absolutely hated Livvy. I hated Emily. I hated Dustin. I hated Ryan! They were all equally annoying. Ryan basically tells Liv the entire book that he just wants to have sex with her and for some reason, it just wouldn't translate. She didn't want to believe it. She's so desperate and boy crazed. I mean, her entire life revolves around a guy. Way to set the womens movement back Liv! Seems like anyone who throws attention her way will do. She was jealous, every time she saw a happy couple or even if she saw one of the guys she likes with another girl.
Let's not forget about Liv's mother's creepy boyfriend. He lingers and stares at Liv. He takes her side in arguments with her mom, etc. Then out of nowhere he's threatening her because he thinks she sabotaging his relationship with her mom. What is that about? Oh right, unnecessary drama!
Aside from the cast of 1000, there were plenty other things to hate, so don't fret. So much inappropriate drug and alcohol abuse. The language and sexual content belonged in a porn, not a young adult novel. Way to set an example! I do realize these things happen in real life but I couldn't round out a point of these subjects being in this book. What's the moral of the story... Teenagers do dumb shit? We already knew that, but thanx for the refresher.
There was no consistency in the character development. They were all over the place. For example, Amanda — Liv's new friend — was supposed to be a nerd. But she had shitty grades and once she dropped band, her parents didn't think she would get into college. Say what, now? Let's at least try to make sense here! Aren't nerds suppose to be smart?
As mad as I was with just...everything about this, I couldn't make myself stop reading — in hopes of finding a point, of course! Sorry to disappoint, that never happened. It just got worse, until I wanted to time travel and not buy this book. Then, this catastrophe of a book had the nerve to end abruptly... There's actually going to be a second book? I'm going to say no...but thanx!
I thought this book would be about the bond of friendship and how no matter what happens, real friends get through it together. IT WASN'T!!!! Instead it was trivial and petty and childish and silly and awful and foolish and gross and dumb and slightly incestuous. If you didn't like that last sentence, you probably won't like this book because that's pretty much the gist. Not even kidding, it reads pretty similar to that. Ugh! (Sigh) I'm out!

Olivia Hudson is a 17 yr. old living in California with her mother & is about to start her senior year of high school. She heads to Oregon to spend the summer with her dad & is separated from her two best friends Dustin & Emily for most of the summer. The three of them have been inseparable since middle school. In recent months Livvy's relationship with Dustin has changed a bit. They sometimes mess around & it means more to Dustin than it does to Livvy. Livvy doesn't want anything to ruin their friendship.
When Livvy returns home everything & everyone seems to have changed. Her best friend Em has gone wild, & something with Dustin is off. Then there's the new boy that just moved in down the street, Ryan. She'd heard about Ryan & seen him in Instagram pictures, but he's even hotter in person. Livvy needs to focus on graduating & getting into a good college, but suddenly all she has on the brain is boys...boys...boys! Two to be exact. Dustin is crazy about her & Ryan is making it clear he's interested too. She goes from no prospects with guys to two gorgeous ones who are actually fighting over her.
As she's caught up in this love triangle, secrets & betrayals are revealed, and suddenly Livvy doesn't know who she can trust. Things aren't always what they seem & her best friends that she considered her safe place become her enemies.
Livvy decides her senior year should be filled with endless possibilities & fun, and she isn't going to let it pass her by. She makes new friends & after lusting over him for weeks, decides to see where things go with Ryan. She's so drawn to him. He's sexy, confident, funny & sweet, but also confusing. She isn't sure where they stand, but still finds herself wanting more. Livvy still feels torn about Dustin & Em and continues to second guess her decisions in this teenage story full of angst, drama, jealously & raging hormones. ;)) I really enjoyed this book & love Monica Murphy's writing. I can't wait for the next book & also look forward to more of Tuttle & Amanda.

An addictive, engrossing, and messy love triangle or should I say love square of young teenage drama at it’s best!!!! Monica Murphy completely outdid herself as she has delivers a sexy, complicated and fresh modern story of young love, friendship, and of course D-R-A-M-A. If One Tree Hill, Gossip Girl, Beverly Hills 90210, and Dawson’s Creek had a baby, Just Friends would be it!!
“He has almost a dangerous air about him and my traitorous body responds. Dustin’s… hot like this. Mad at me. Frustrated with me. The feeling is mutual.”
Olivia is best friends with Dustin and Emily. These three are practically inseparable. So what’s the problem? Well, Dustin likes Olivia. Like is putting it mildly. Dustin is madly in love with Olivia. He wants to be more than best friends. Olivia shared her first kiss with Dustin. First, make out session and rounded the bases with him except go all the way. Olivia also likes Dustin but when she returns back from her summer vacation, Olivia is shocked to learn what her two best friends have been hiding from her. First, Emily is hooking up with the new guy in town. Second, she discovers that Dustin had hooked up with Emily over the summer. Although Emily was fooling around with Ryan, the new guy, she has feelings for Dustin. Dustin wants Olivia to forgive him. Olivia’s friendship with Emily is ruined. Olivia makes a new friend and oh yeah Ryan wants Olivia. So yeah, you can see the dilemma and hot mess of drama. Did I forget to mention Olivia is torn with who she likes...Dustin or Ryan?
Ahhh...is your head exploding already with all the drama of who is friends with who? Who is dating who? And which friend can you trust? As much as my head is exploding with all this teenage drama and angst, I am addicted. Yes, Monica Murphy you have worked your evil genius magic on me and I need to know what happens next. Who will Olivia choose? And of course, what is happening with Emily? Did I forgot to mention that my favorite character of this book is not the heroine but the secondary character, Amanda. Yes, I think that she is the only sane one of the group and thank you Monica Murphy for that.

Just Friends is one of those reads that you can’t helped but be dangerously engrossed and addicted to. There are characters that I wanted to knock some senses into them but at the same time, I tried to understand them since being a teenager is not easy as you are trying to find yourself and discover that it’s not the quantity of friends but the quality of friends. So if you are looking for a read that was compelling, heartfelt, and full of drama then I would definitely recommend reading this book. Just Friends might be my new favorite guilty pleasure as I need to know what going to happen to these group of friends as they discover and find themselves. Can’t wait to read the next book.

Monica Murphy completely outdid herself as she has delivers a sexy, complicated and fresh modern story of young love, friendship, and of course D-R-A-M-A. If One Tree Hill, Gossip Girl, Beverly Hills 90210, and Dawson’s Creek had a baby, Just Friends would be it!!
“He has almost a dangerous air about him and my traitorous body responds. Dustin’s… hot like this. Mad at me. Frustrated with me. The feeling is mutual.”Olivia is best friends with Dustin and Emily. These three are practically inseparable. So what’s the problem? Well, Dustin likes Olivia. Like is putting it mildly. Dustin is madly in love with Olivia. He wants to be more than best friends. Olivia shared her first kiss with Dustin. First, make out session and rounded the bases with him except go all the way. Olivia also likes Dustin but when she returns back from her summer vacation, Olivia is shocked to learn what her two best friends have been hiding from her. First, Emily is hooking up with the new guy in town. Second, she discovers that Dustin had hooked up with Emily over the summer. Although Emily was fooling around with Ryan, the new guy, she has feelings for Dustin. Dustin wants Olivia to forgive him. Olivia’s friendship with Emily is ruined. Olivia makes a new friend and oh yeah Ryan wants Olivia. So yeah, you can see the dilemma and hot mess of drama. Did I forget to mention Olivia is torn with who she likes...Dustin or Ryan?
Ahhh...is your head exploding already with all the drama of who is friends with who? Who is dating who? And which friend can you trust? As much as my head is exploding with all this teenage drama and angst, I am addicted. Yes, Monica Murphy you have worked your evil genius magic on me and I need to know what happens next. Who will Olivia choose? And of course, what is happening with Emily? Did I forgot to mention that my favorite character of this book is not the heroine but the secondary character, Amanda. Yes, I think that she is the only sane one of the group and thank you Monica Murphy for that.
“My life has turned into a bad TV movie. Like Lifetime on steroids. ”Just Friends is one of those reads that you can’t helped but be dangerously engrossed and addicted to. There are characters that I wanted to knock some senses into them but at the same time, I tried to understand them since being a teenager is not easy as you are trying to find yourself and discover that it’s not the quantity of friends but the quality of friends. So if you are looking for a read that was compelling, heartfelt, and full of drama then I would definitely recommend reading this book. Just Friends might be my new favorite guilty pleasure as I need to know what going to happen to these group of friends as they discover and find themselves. Can’t wait to read the next book.

Monica Murphy begins a new series about a group of teens living it large, I have to give her, her due in regards to this as she really did hit the nail on the head in relation to the personality, actions and reactions of this group of characters and the age group they were representing.

I think this book pretty much tops the list when it comes to the mix of some of the most abhorrent characters I have ever come across in my reading travels. Told from Olivia’s point of view, the story starts with her returning home from a summer spent with her father, his new wife and her younger step-siblings. Her Mum has moved on with a creepy new boyfriend and everything seems to have changed in her absence.
Over the summer her best friends Em and Dustin have been having ‘fun’ without her, so much so that its extremely obvious from their first meeting on her return that a lot of the changes may not be for the better, Em is wild out of control and looking to share the love with whomever it seems is in the vicinity at the time, and Dustin is looking to take things beyond the friend-zone with Livvy, something that she’s really not sure about, add into the mix the new-guy in town professing to have an interest in her, even though he has been messing with Em while she was away, and you are looking at a whole lot of blow-ups, back-stabbing, bitching and drama.
Is it always going to be like this? Me stuck between the two of them having to choose…
Secrets and lies, are basically what keep this story moving along, and with each new revelation or discovery that something isn’t necessarily as it initially seemed I found myself disliking the characters involved more and more. I have to say that the themes of the plot and the characterizations of most of the main players in this book would on a normal day end with me DNF-ing, but rather than getting frustrated at everything that was going on, I just found myself getting more and more disgusted and at points a little uncomfortable with things, but I couldn’t stop reading, I suppose in a way I was hoping that at some point the author would add in something redeemable about each of them, just so I could feel something other than dislike for them all.
Livvy and her friends epitomize everything I hated about my teen years, with their selfish, self-absorbed, whiplash attitudes towards themselves and each other, and to sound like an old lady here, the one thing that always stands out about these types of stories are the lack of any meaningful parental involvement with the teens in question, it never quite sits right with me.
At this point I am not 100% sure whether I want to continue this journey, with these characters. The author is continuing with the next book More Than Friends due at some point in the future. I think the only thing that is encouraging me to read this one is that it looks like the story is going to be told at least partly from Amanda’s point of view (Olivia’s friend), and to be blunt, she was pretty much the only person in the book I actually liked. Everything is for the most part left up in the air at the end of Just Friends with Olivia pretty much still in the same situation she was at the beginning of the book, just a few more developments along, and still not really knowing whom to trust, and who is actually playing her for a fool, although with her internal musings and actions so far, it's hard to care or empathize with her in any way, shape or form at the moment.
I feel anchorless at sea without my friends on either side of me.

I have legit struggled with this rating and review. Mainly because I have not stopped thinking about these characters all day. I have wondered what’s going to happen next and second guessed all these moments. I started this book at 11:00 PM and planned to read until I fell asleep. Next thing you know it’s 2:30 AM and I am on the last page wanting more.
The story is told from Olivia’s point of view. Olivia is the daughter of a single mother and lives in a wealthy subdivision, but they are not wealthy. Her mother works as a nurse and Olivia has to rely on friends or her bike to get around. She has two best friends, Em and Dustin. I am not sure I would consider these two ‘friends’ but she does.
When the story begins summer is almost over and Olivia is back from visiting her dad. She is surprised at how much everyone has changed since she has been gone, but feels it will be a matter of time before things go back to normal. Her first day back she meets Ryan. Ryan is the new guy, star football player, sexy as sin and cocky as can be. She isn’t a fan of Ryan despite her attraction to him. When they meet Ryan is actually hooking up with Em.
From here, holy hell, where do I even begin. Things just escalate so quickly out of control and at times I had no clue what was coming next. I legit struggled with these guys. As an adult, I want to scream at them to make better choices. I wanted so much from this story. I wanted to get to know our characters more and understand their motives. I am seriously hoping the conclusion will give me all my answers and enlighten me some.
So here’s my struggle. This book is addictive. I read it in one sitting and while some of the antics drove me crazy, it kept me turning the page like a crack addict. I also have thought about these guys all day. I have discussed it on two or three occasions with my bestie just today. However, I wanted to like and understand Olivia more. Regardless, I can't wait to read the conclusion. I can’t wait to know the truths and see how things play out.
This book is YA, but it’s also pretty dirty. These kids are into way more stuff than I was at that age. They are drinking, doing drugs, and having random hookups. So while it takes place in high school, it’s very mature.

If someone was to ask to me if I wanted to go back to high school for four years or get a bunch of root canals without the drugs, I'm picking the damn root canals!! This story had so much drama that I honestly couldn't stop reading but then there were parts that truly annoyed the hell out of me and had me thanking god that I'm not Seventeen anymore.
Olivia is finally back after spending the summer with her dad and his new family. Missing out on everything over the summer, she's excited to get back to her two best friends Emily and Dustin. But returning home, she's in for a lot of changes. One best friend wants more than just a friendship and the other is turning into a frenemy. And that's just the begining because there's a new boy in town and he's about to set his sights on her.

This is what basically happened throughout the story and did I read I like a mad woman? You bet I did!! Ryan always gets what he wants and right now, that person is Olivia. But will they give in, or will someone else force their hand?
Like I said before, I enjoyed certain parts of this story and I really couldn't stop reading it. But...... the other parts? I wanted to smack, at least 95% of the characters. I knew they were young and immature at times but christ on a cracker!!they tested my patience.
It took a long time to warm up to Ryan and Emily just gave me whiplash and made me stabby. With the exception of one character that I adored, this was an ok read for me. If you love high school drama, then this one has your name all over it.

When I hit the half way mark, Olivia's mind was in turmoil, she's still attracted to her best friend Dustin, and her body reacts to the slightest touch from him, every time he briefly reaches out for her, flip the coin, jump onto the next chapter same scenario but it's not with the same boy it's with Ryan. This too and fro flipping continues throughout the book, what sucks is as a reader it makes it very difficult to jump in a book and throttle people!! Someone please invent that!! Make it happen!!
This made for very very hard reading, the drama gave me a migraine but I shit you not I actually read this bugga in one seating, I couldn't stop my eyes from devouring the words, devouring the drama, speeding through the pages to see how it would all pan out, I've never read so fast in my life!! GAH I need to go lay my head down!! LOL
I think the author did a brilliant job of capturing the true essence of teenage life in highschool, I think she hit the nail on the head, all those scary feels of what it was like growing up came back at me full throttle.

Talk about a ride. I couldn't put this book down. I had to finish to the end. My poor family took a back burner to this story yesterday.
What can I say but damn what a chaotic mess that kept me flipping the pages. I love drama, maybe it was years watching soap operas when I was way too young.
I can't say I loved all the characters and their actions, but I can say characters with flaws make stories more real.
I was hooked from page one and ran the gamut of emotions from happy, sad, love, hate, laughing, tears. That's a testament of good storytelling.
I'm clamoring to find out what happens next. So bring it on and fast!

If there was ever a book that reminds me too much of my high school days, this would be it. **shivers**
This book was a total guilty pleasure. Lots of drama and tension to get you hooked and turning the pages fast. It's pretty addictive!

Just Friends is the second book I've read by Monica Murphy and I don't know if I would give this author another chance. I read another YA title by her and while it was okay, it didn't wow me at all and it was very childish.
Just Friends was a train-wreck. I wanted to stop—boy, did I want to stop—but I couldn't. For some unknown reason, I had to keep reading. I was ready to DNF this one, but I don't know why I kept reading. It's safe to say I wasted my time.
Olivia has two best friends, Em and Dustin. She has been hooking up with Dustin and hasn't told anyone, not even Em. When Em finds out, she tries to play it cool, but it's obvious she's also interested in Dustin and that's when the claws come out. Enter in a new guy, Ryan. He's the type that everyone warns you about. He's kind of player, but will let you know beforehand what he's in for. Olivia still has feelings for Dustin, but she can't get Ryan out of her mind.
Normally, I don't read love-triangles so I don't know what possessed me to pick this one up. I have to say, I wasn't bothered by the love-triangle, which says a lot. Although, it could have to do with the fact that it's not much of a triangle since most of the book Olivia spends her time with Ryan.
What I really disliked were three specific characters.
1. Dustin is... I'll settle for jerk, but I have some more colorful words for the guy. He screwed up big time and lost Olivia in the process. Guys, I was so mad because he's the one to blame, yet he was blaming Olivia. Like, can you not?! From the start, I didn't like him at all.
2. Then there's Em, who's supposed to be the best friend. If she's a friend, I don't want to know how an enemy is supposed to be like. I was so skeptical of her right from the start and with good reason. She also screwed up, but I feel like her cause was redeemable. It's what she did after. She would humiliate Olivia and lie to her all the time. I was so fed up by her.
3. I don't know what to say about Ryan. At the beginning, my feelings were mixed. He came on to Olivia way too hard and the things the guy would say... Soap, meet mouth. They were filthy, to say the least, especially to someone he had just met. Over the course of the story, I kind of liked him and near the end, I was kind of won over. I have to say I'm team Ryan on this one.
Olivia was an...interesting character. She would make some really bad decisions, which is normal since she's a teenager. I was just iffy about her. I think the only great decision she made was befriending Amanda. I honestly kept reading this story for Amanda. I was far more interested in her life and her romance than Olivia's, which is why I'm looking forward to her book. Amanda is a fantastic friend to have. She's upfront, loyal, and so kind. She also thinks twice before making decisions. A few times, she made some not so good decisions, but it was because Olivia would pressure her.
Amanda's romance had me so excited. Gosh, I so wanted more of her and Jordan. Imagine my surprise when I find out the next book in the series is her story! I'm really excited to get to it and see if she can get her happy ending.
Speaking of endings, Just Friends left an open ending at the end and I don't know how the author is going to wrap it up in the sequel, since it won't be Olivia's story. We'll see how that goes.

Just Friends is the second book I've read by Monica Murphy and I don't know if I would give this author another chance. I read another YA title by her and while it was okay, it didn't wow me at all and it was very childish.
Just Friends was a train-wreck. I wanted to stop—boy, did I want to stop—but I couldn't. For some unknown reason, I had to keep reading. I was ready to DNF this one, but I don't know why I kept reading. It's safe to say I wasted my time.
Olivia has two best friends, Em and Dustin. She has been hooking up with Dustin and hasn't told anyone, not even Em. When Em finds out, she tries to play it cool, but it's obvious she's also interested in Dustin and that's when the claws come out. Enter in a new guy, Ryan. He's the type that everyone warns you about. He's kind of player, but will let you know beforehand what he's in for. Olivia still has feelings for Dustin, but she can't get Ryan out of her mind.
Normally, I don't read love-triangles so I don't know what possessed me to pick this one up. I have to say, I wasn't bothered by the love-triangle, which says a lot. Although, it could have to do with the fact that it's not much of a triangle since most of the book Olivia spends her time with Ryan.
What I really disliked were three specific characters.
1. Dustin is... I'll settle for jerk, but I have some more colorful words for the guy. He screwed up big time and lost Olivia in the process. Guys, I was so mad because he's the one to blame, yet he was blaming Olivia. Like, can you not?! From the start, I didn't like him at all.
2. Then there's Em, who's supposed to be the best friend. If she's a friend, I don't want to know how an enemy is supposed to be like. I was so skeptical of her right from the start and with good reason. She also screwed up, but I feel like her cause was redeemable. It's what she did after. She would humiliate Olivia and lie to her all the time. I was so fed up by her.
3. I don't know what to say about Ryan. At the beginning, my feelings were mixed. He came on to Olivia way too hard and the things the guy would say... Soap, meet mouth. They were filthy, to say the least, especially to someone he had just met. Over the course of the story, I kind of liked him and near the end, I was kind of won over. I have to say I'm team Ryan on this one.

My first reaction when I finished this?
What does soon mean???
I want more of this.
Let me warn you: This is high on angst, high on drama and full of teenagers going at it, whom you might wanna smack BUT it is so so so enjoyable!! You might not be able to stop until you done with the book.
Murphy's writing is just right. She pushes the drama high, but not too much. The chemistry is off the chart, we get just the right of smut... everything is balanced just right, that I kept reading, even if I was exasperated. I devoured the book actually. I thoroughly enjoyed this cleverly crafted novel.
The storyline is good. Lot's of romance and mostly friendship dramas. I could see quite a few things coming of a mile. I have an idea what possibly will happen next... But actually for me this is not so much about what happens, but totally character driven.
Meet Olivia also known as Livvy or Liv. The book is told from her POV. Olivia is senior in Highschool has two best friends and is trying to figure out how she feels about one of them...She is actually pretty likeable but quite a hypocrite if you ask me. She is also, well, annoying and stupid and yet I get her. I understand her confusion, her doubt and her actions. I actually can't believe I do, because frankly, she does act rather like a out of control teen half the time and the other half totally stupid. Okay that's a bit unfair, just a quarter of the time stupid. Still she isn't going to win an award for her choices. With all the dramas and the games they play with each other, especially the supposed best friends, Liv changes. And she does do some growing, most importantly she does examine herself and her actions.
I found her relationship with other girls really interesting. Again, Murphy does an amazing job at getting it right. Because who hasn't had a toxic friend? Who wasn't a hypocritical teen? Yep I think most of us. Liv is not mean, not purposely so, and her choices while at times annoying are not surprising. Which makes this so enjoyable.
Each and every character in the book, is like that. There is no black or white just loads of grey. And at the end of it, we don't exactly know where they going to end up. Which is why I can't wait for the next book!
Most girls in this book are very tricky, the totally dishonest. They will say and do what they need to, to please a guy. The boys are basically homonal mensluts-who all use the girls, and make no secret of it. Halfway through the book, I thought, gosh not all teenagers are like that, I know they are not. Then things kinda shift in the book and we get to see what's behind the way the girls behave. And frankly I know plenty of women who would feel like that. Somehow Murphy took a super dramatic highschool romance and threw in some pretty interesting things, in a very sly manner I might add. Quite frankly, that's pure brilliance.
So high drama, a nice amount of smexy, hot guys, super entertaining, well written novel, that leaves you pining for more. Need I say anything else?

This book was absolutely and completely ridiculous. And I'm not even sure if I mean that in a good way? I vacillated between DNF and binging on it pretty much the entire time. The characters were bratty, selfish, and pretentious and I didn't like any of them. The plot is really thin, moves at hyper speed, and there's zero character growth. These kinds of books usually drive me crazy. I don't read them, I don't even have them on my radar. BUT I HAVE NO REGRETS. None. The drama roped me in and I couldn't put it down.
But, why? Well, I'm pretty sure it's a case of the dangling carrot. Monica Murphy successfully interwove a charming and alluring storyline with some secondary characters that really carried me through to the end. I am 100% invested in their story and HEA and I can't wait to see what comes next for them...in the next book.
The. Next. Book. Ugh. What a let down. Just when the drama was starting to level off and the story was really starting to have some weight to it. Nope. The end. Y'all come back, now.

I think this is an author who would gain a lot if she payed attention to reviews. I used to like her books and the number of reviews has decreased SO MUCH ( like,for an author who got over 40.000 reviews and now she's got barely 800?) People do get tired of reading the same book. These messy plots involving so many characters and nothing is resolved and to make worse you end it in a cliffhanger, readers are fed up with it. And unlikable character? It's just a shot at your foot. 3.4 average reviews?!?! Something is wrong.

I won't lie, this book is addicting. I kept reading chapter after chapter wanting to know where it would end. I wanted to know what more could happen to the characters. I needed to know who would end up crying, mad or happy.
But... The characters all annoyed me. Olivia, Emily, Ryan and Dustin got on my nerves so much that it was quite irratating. I was hoping that by the end of the book, I would at least love one of them, but no.
I tried not to judge because they are teenagers, but at last, I couldn't stop it. They act like babies whenever it doesn't work like this. They turn mean whenever they don't get what they want. And it's a constant battle about who will get with who.
Olivia annoyed me mostly because she can't seem to really make up her mind about what or more accurately, who she wants. Sometimes, I had hope she would actually mature, but in the next chapter, she came back to her old ways.
Emily is obviously in need of attention throughout the whole book. I was really hoping to see that perhaps, she had something to add to why she does, but nothing.
Dustin didn't annoy me as much as the girls, but I really found him annoying. In the end, I will admit that even if I didn't love him, I liked him just a little more when he finally made a mature move.
Ryan was the boy that probably started the whole drama between the three best friends. He is cocky and he knows he's handsome and every girl wants him. I don't know whether he really likes Olivia or he just wants to get into her pants, but honestly, I don't care much about it. His character didn't call to me so whether he ends up with Olivia or anyone else, at this point of the series, I don't really care about him.
Though these four got on my nerves, I fell in love with Amanda and Tuttle aka Jordan. I really liked them even if Tuttle is mostly seen as a womanizer, but whenever he's around Amanda, I can see the good guy behind and Amanda is just a refreshing character among the others, that you can't help but love her.
And I can't forget about Fitch, Olivia's mom's new boyfriend. He gives me the creep. I don't know what to think of him really.
But this book is addictive and I wouldn't be surprised that it compares to the Gossip Girl series at all. It's the first book that got me captivated while its characters annoy me and that just shows you what an amazing writer Monica Murphy is.
So yes, I will continue to the read the next book in this series especially for more Amanda and Tuttle time, but also because I need to know how it will go. I'd like to see Olivia take more control of her life. I'd like to see more inside of Emily's head in hopes that I could understand her. And also, I want to know what the hell Fitch has in mind.

Holy Jesus, this book! I knew from the blurb that I would love it. Someone described is as 90210 -ish and it totally is. I spent the whole entire book on pins and needles thinking something crazy was going to happen. These girls put themselves in some crazy situations. I was actually nervous to keep reading. Talk about deception, lying and not being able to trust anyone. Who needs enemies when you have friends like that!! Add a couple of love triangles in there and this makes for a very compelling book that I just could not put down. I spent my whole day reading. And there will be more! This is a must read for sure.... and look at that cover!

THIS BOOK!!! It is everything that I could want in a YA book....it is seniors at their best and worst....like it or not one of the most realistic YA books I have read in a long time. Monica Murphy nailed the spirit of the American Teen. She captured the feelings and emotions and hormones perfectly....because at the end of the day, these teens have no real clue what they want out of life...but wow what an amazing journey to be taking with Liv and Ryan and Amanda and Tuttle!!!
This book deserves all the stars!!!

This is one of those books that I would have loved when I was younger but all I could think about when reading this was how annoying and childish these characters were. Livvy was became more and more bitchy as the book went on and she didn't seem like a very good friend and Ryan just....no. I don't see the allure in male protagonists like Ryan. The only part I enjoyed was Amanda and Tuttle.

It's like an extended prologue that's available for free on WattPad, I still hate most of the characters, but reading it made me more sympathetic and gave me a better understanding of some of the things they do and how they felt. It makes me want to read Just Friends over again with new eyes.***

I totally enjoyed this book!!!! Talk about a book filled with teenage angst, drama, back stabbing, social media problems, and a love triangle so complicated I almost (and that's ALMOST) wish I had that much fun in high school myself!!!
I don't know how many TIMES I wanted to throw my IPad and stomp my feet at Olivia's exasperating indecisiveness!! For this, I think Monica Murphy captured the life of a teenager perfectly, in this case being one that has to choose between her love and growing feelings for her best friend who happens to be a guy (Dustin), and a new (and extremely good looking) guy who's just moved in, who also happens to be a total player but who claims to have the hots for her. You know the whole "the player will change for me" type thing.... Well that's all in here and I LOVED it!!
I can also honestly say this is one book that I walked away from, not having fond feelings for ANY of the characters. (Well Dustin wasn't really on my "I must donkey kong punch them in the face list and completely adore Amanda, Olivia's new friend) And While I liked Olivia a lot and began to feel for her, (especially where Em is concerned) that girl left me frustrated with her back and forth and her inability to just CHOSE! And THEN I did fall for Ryan at the beginning of the book, but then that boy had my head spinning in circles so fast I just don't know if I can trust him!!! And EMILY, let's not even START with Emily!! Monica Murphy did a great job at portraying the problems in high school friendships that break up and go badly, and the aspect of social media being involved was spot on!! Man oh man I am GLAD I am not a teenager in this social media driven world! I think the only thing I had to worry about was wether people were on MSN or not (remember that or am I aging myself??)
Over all this book was such a fantastic read that I give it 4.5 stars!!! I'm telling you I literally had Palm sweats as I held on my iPad and struggled not to throw it against a wall!!! There was so much angst and back stabbing, and the inability to TRUST some of the characters was intense and had me gripped in the story to the very last page! I cannot wait for the next book in this series because I NEED to know how this all works out for Olivia!!!
