Everyone has a plan, until life crashes in

That's the plan …

But when a dead body literally crosses her path in the mountains of Washington state, Raleigh’s forced to choose between her personal life and her forensic skills to track a killer--a killer unlike any she’s ever encountered, and a murder with clues that don't add up.

When she realizes the killer will strike again, Raleigh knows the only way to stop another murder is to put herself at the top of the killer’s list.

With innocent lives on the line, and the FBI watching her every move, can Raleigh save another innocent girl from a gruesome end--or will she only wind up with more regrets, and literal dead ends?

I'm so disappointed this book is over! I looked forward to every moment I had reading it. For fans of this series, this one is a solid installment. The wait was worth it. Raleigh is back! This one takes place shortly after the events of "The Stars Shine Bright" and Giorello does a great job picking right up with Raleigh's life but also sprinkles in references to the other books in the series. So if you're a little fuzzy on what happened in prior stories, you will have no problem reading this book. She also ties in her "young" Raleigh Harmon series in a neat way (it would be a spoiler to say how!) Giorello's secondary characters are colorful and help to create a rich tapestry backdrop to the main mystery, and Eleanor (from The Stars Shine Bright) is fast becoming one of my favorites. Hopefully we'll see more of her in future installments. My only quibble is Raleigh's slightly out of character (or maybe she's evolving?) attraction to Jack. I mean, a girl can totally fall in love, but Raleigh has always seemed no nonsense, so to have her affected by a guy's sweaty scent... lol. Maybe it's just me. All in all a terrific read and one I highly recommend!

Another awesome installment in the Raleigh Harmon series. This says it is book 1 in the Raleigh Harmon P.I. mysteries but it is the continuation of the previous series so it's kind of like book 6. I definitely think you should read them in order. Such an amazing series!

Interesting plot. I liked it. Too late to finish a review, but I’ll have more detail tomorrow.

Okay, two days later.. Review:

The Waves Break Gray by Sibella Giorello
Timeframe: Present
Location: Leavenworth, Washington and other locations
Main Characters:
Raleigh Harmon: Forensic geologist
Jack Stephanson: FBI Special Agent
Eleanor Anderson: Raleigh's "aunt"

While running on a mountain road outside of Leavenworth with Jack, a friend from her FBI days, Raleigh's dog disappeared. At a distance a warning bark could be heard above them, so she took off up the hill to investigate. Madame had come across a female hand sticking out of the dirt.

As a Forensic geologist Raleigh could compare the crime scene soil, rock, and moisture with evidence she collects to determine the time an incident occurred, the cause, or even responsible parties. The victim's parents wanted to hire her, and her partner was pressuring her to accept. But with law enforcement already suspicious and resenting her, and a non-negotiable daily obligation 2 ½ hours from the crime scene, she simply couldn't commit to this case.

Raleigh's mother has been hospitalized since a mental breakdown years ago. Not being there to visit her everyday at exactly the same time would impede her progress or set her back. But Aunt Eleanor offered the use of her car every day (and to pay possible speeding tickets), and Jack said he could fly her in sometimes, because he needed her help with a hate crime in the same town. But the clincher was a dream she had of her late father giving her advice. So she accepted.

Racing back and forth from Tacoma to Leavenworth she deals with days of strange meetings and confrontations. Getting information was difficult, but little by little she was whittling her evidence down to a couple suspects, two in particular wreaked of guilt. But, oh, there are more surprises on the horizon.

Fond of:
All I learned about a science I knew little of before: Forensic geology. The author did some homework! I liked her "aunt" the actress. I use quotes because Eleanor only played her aunt to help Raleigh in an FBI case. But they stayed close, and love each other like relatives. I liked how logical Raleigh is. I can follow her mental progression easily.

Not so fond of:
#1) The faith issue. Raleigh is a Christian, but it doesn't appear the Jack is. The indicator was when he told her about the hate crime he wanted help with being at a church, which he assumed she'd like to take, her being a "Christian and all". Yet that doesn't stop her from wanting to be in a relationship with him. . Unequally yoked in a book labeled Christian Fiction just bothers me. Do Christian authors just disregard what God has to say about that?

2) And this is minor, really, just a pet peeve. When something is used over and over it becomes glaring. The over use of similes in this book was tiresome. Or maybe it was the overuse of the word "like"…who caught the line like someone learning how to clapHe wiped the tool like someone wiping down a murder weaponthe wrist torqued, like someone waving from the groundthe crests stabbing the clear autumn sky like knivesbent forward like a wilting plant limbs, looking like arms raised in some plea. I must have highlighted 30 of them before I quit. Okay, so maybe it wasn't so minor.

But the mystery, suspense, fun and not so fun characters, kidnapping, complicated relationships, a mysterious benefactor, and an attraction/avoidance attachment all make for a really good book.

2024… I just finished four books in a series when Raleigh was an FBI agent. I hadn't remembered I’d read anything by Sibella Giorello. As I read this review however, I realize my feelings about her similes changed. I love them now. Really cute word pictures. I’m going to have to re-read this, though.

I stand by my feelings about the unequally yoked aspect of the book.

It has been so long (four years), since the previous book in this series, “The Stars Shine Bright”, was released. While I have thoroughly enjoyed the three Raleigh Harmon YA novels that have been released during that long four year wait, I have very much missed adult Raleigh. The previous book left Raleigh’s personal life in chaos and I have been impatiently waiting to see how she manages to pick up the pieces and move forward.

Even though it has been several years between books for readers, not much time has passed for Raleigh. However, she has experienced quite a bit of character growth. A hallmark of great writing is character development and Sibella has done a wonderful job molding Raleigh’s personality. Throughout this series, Raleigh has mellowed, but she’s still kept her fire and intensity. She’s still stubborn, but she’s also learned when to bend. Her hurt remains genuine and her love for her family real and pure. Raleigh is truly a remarkable character which leaves the reader wanting only good things to come from her messy life.

I’ve probably mentioned in every one of my reviews of this series, how much I appreciate the way in which Sibella handles the mental illness storyline. Raleigh’s mom is so broken, but she is handled it with amazing grace. The scenes that take place in the mental hospital are truly heartbreaking—not only for Raleigh, but for the reader experiencing the fractured minds of the patients. These emotional scenes give a real sense of how helpless the family feels and how disconnected the patients are. I love how Sibella continues to develop this portion of the story by showing both sides of the struggle with an abundance of grace and compassion.

As expected, the mystery is fun and intriguing. It’s not completely surprising who all is involved, but it’s not obvious either. I enjoyed seeing how the different pieces fell into place and as always Raleigh’s investigations are interesting and at times a little tense. There were a couple of minor parts I would have liked better clarified, but overall, I’m very satisfied.

I haven’t been particularly happy with Raleigh’s romance decisions, but I’m starting to warm up to Jack. It helped that this book softened him just a bit and the reader got to see a different side to his personality. But it was also nice to see Raleigh begin to understand DeMott’s perspective too. Combined, these two changes help to make the budding romance more acceptable.

I thorough enjoyed “The Waves Break Gray” and was sad to see it end. I love the Raleigh Harmon series and I do hope that it will not be another four years before the next book. Raleigh’s story is far from being over and I look forward to many more books in this series. Hopefully, one day, she’ll eventually solve the murder mystery that’s closest to her heart.

This was my first book by this author so I was missing Raleigh's backstory. But even so, I found her hard to like and some parts were just confusing. I did enjoy the mystery part of the story, though. I didn't see it ending like it did!

This latest installment of the Raleigh Harmon mysteries is another gripping read. There is a lot going on with Harmon these days. Figuring out where she fits in since she resigned from the FBI, romantic tension with fellow agent Jack, a very strained relationship with her mother now committed to a mental facility, and figuring out who is killing young girls in a small tourist town. Giorello's descriptive writing and mastery of first person POV is always a joy to read. That's why Raleigh Harmon is one of my favorite fictional characters. The hardest part about reading this series is waiting for the next book.

I was so looking forward to this book. The author never disappoints as the characters are believable and the situations are graphically disscribed so I am THERE. I REALLY wanted more of the Jack & Raleigh issue covered. I am looking forward as always to the next book in the series. Hint, hint, hint, Sibella!!!

My review today is on the Romantic Suspense, The Waves Break Gray. This is the first book in the Raleigh Harmon PI Mystery Series. I was sent this book. This review is in my own words and thoughts. I have never read any of her books before but I enjoyed this book so much I signed up for her news letter. I hope to read more of her work. I really enjoyed the characters. I don't usually like books in the first person but I did this one. The story is well written and action packed.

Forensic Geologist Raleigh Harmon was working for the FBI but left under mutual agreement. She goes on a hiking trip with her friend and ex-coworker, Jack. On the hike her dog starts barking and when they find her they also find a dead body. They call it in and then she stands there and criticizes the moving of the body. They obviously didn't know what they were doing. She must hurry home to get to the mental hospital to see her mother. A friend of hers asked her to take the case and help him. She refuses; she must be at the mental hospital each day for her mother. Jack asked her to take a case in the same town as a consultant that has been classified as a hate crime. (her specialty) She finally agrees when he tells her he will fly her up each day and get her back in time to see her mother.. But she soon needs to distance herself from the attraction that's growing with in her.

FBI Special Agent Jack Stephanson takes Raleigh to his home town to have a personal conversation. He is about to ask her a personal question and maybe give her a kiss when her dog starts barking. They travel up the mountain and find a hand sticking up out of the ground. Raleigh goes into professional mode. He helps with the police and then flies her home. He asks her to help him with a case that is taking place at the same town. He wants her to find herself and see her worth after being let go by the FBI. But she keeps pulling away from him. How can he keep her safe?

A journey to terror as she finds that there is a killer in the small town. Two young girls are murdered and Raleigh soon becomes the next target. God has a plan for these two, a plan for a hope and a future. God has a plan for you too, a good plan and not for evil. Give Him your heart and watch Him move in your life.

There is a decent mystery muddled by traditional tiresome romance. Raleigh is now out on her own. Her skills are exemplary but her commitment to justice over rules lead to a break with the FBI. While one a run with hunky FBI agent Jack, Raleigh's dog discovers a dead body. This leads to an investigation that leads to a connection with at least one other murder. Raleigh is going solo and although her instincts are terrific her me against the world approach leads to danger.

Raleigh is a terrific character, smart with a mind of science and a heart for justice. But her attraction to Jack and the romantic jitters were just plain annoying. Much preferred her unmanned so to speak. Raleigh is still dealing with her mother's mental health issues. Although the mental health issues of the mom and the family are treated sensitively I do take issue with the asylum scenes. The other inmates are silly caricatures and completely unbelievable. as with pretty much all of this author's works, the book is well written and decently paced. But I really wish the romance was omitted and the mental hospital scenes were more realistic.

I love this series. Giorello can write. So well. The mysteries are always just puzzling enough that I usually don’t figure them out, but not such a stretch that I couldn’t have at all. And Raleigh is a total badass, complex and 3-dimensional.
My only problem with this book was the errors. Just dozens and dozens of them. I noticed Giorello isn’t publishing through Thomas Nelson starting with this book (I also read the next one—yes out of order—and it was riddled with typos too), so clearly the quality isn’t as good with the self publishing method. Giorello—I will edit your next one for grammar and syntax for FREE just so no more of my favorite mystery series is so horribly tainted with distracting errors like this one was.
But overall, I can overlook them. This book was excellent as always.

A very good plot (worth five stars) but I will confess there were times I was quite confused (leading to a four-star rating).

To clarify, THIS plot wasn't confusing, but some of the non-essential details seemed incomplete. I felt like I was reading a book that was in the middle of a series. I kept checking to see if it was really a "Book 1" like I had thought. Eventually, I noticed that while this is Book 1 in this particular series, there were other series leading up to this one. In fact, the same book seems to be Book 6 in a different but related series. Quite confusing, I will admit.

Having said all that, I will now try and figure out where (which series of the three I have discovered thus far) to start reading with this character, so that some of the confusion surrounding her life outside of this particular case can be resolved.

Raleigh a day with Jack climbing the hills the laughter and enjoyment of being out in the sunshine and with her dog ‘Madame’. Her barking would not stop and Jack calls the dog a problem for having brought Madame along. A hand sticking out, the rest is buried, which ended the day and she became the forensic geologist / private investigator now. After ten years no longer with the FBI she chose family that needed her.
The team that came up got suspicious when Raleigh kept telling how to do the soil, Jack telling her, it made her look suspicious by doing that.
A good flowing plot not as wordy as the Raleigh Harmon series, and enjoying this one more.

The Waves Break Gray starts out strong with an intriguing exposition and an interesting idea for the plot, but in my opinion, the plot's many windy paths don't all seem to mesh smoothly.

Some of Giorello's writing is fresh and made me think, especially her description.

I did find the female main character's mental preoccupation with agent Jack Stephanson reminiscent of my middle school students: the constant thoughts of him that she battles at times border on lust while her face-to-face interactions are awkward. Are most adults really that uncomfortable in their own skin? Those scenes seemed overly adolescent to me.

Rock solid

Beautifully crafted mystery with engaging protagonists. The author has a firm grasp of the tenets of a good story, following forensic geologist Raleigh through an investigative journey she is initially reluctant to take, but then one she can't let go. Interesting and detailed back stories add depth, and a need to know more (no doubt in future instalments) despite this being a standalone read. This and more, cherished along by the author's thoughtfully expressed prose. An excellent balance between forensic detail and the craft of writing. Nice work.

Another great Raleigh Harmon Mystery! Loved following our defrocked forensic anthropologist work back and forth from the lab to the German community where not one, not two, but three mysteries unfolded. Intertwined with the mysteries, glimpses of Raleigh's personal life provided additional insight into her complex character. Will she fall in love again? What will she do about her mother? How can she honor her mother when her mother refuses to see her? Once again, a resounding well done, Sibella Giorello. Hurry up and write the next installment!

I was a little disappointed with this book. It is the first in her PI series I enjoyed Raleigh Harmon’s five books in the FBI series. I thought they were well-written and had vivid descriptions that were interesting to read. This book lacked that. The dialogue was basic and sparse. The actual mystery had some twists and turns which was satisfying. I do like the fact that Raleigh is independent smart and a risk taker.

Altho it says book 1 of Raleigh Harmon PI series. I really felt I missed some of the nuances between Raleigh and Jack, Raleigh and her mother, and several other characters. This story was fine without that knowledge but I probably would have given it 5 stars had I read the earlier books.
I loved the suspense and the twists and turns. Great book, highly recommend it.

Raleigh Harmon is no longer an FBI agent, but still does consulting work as a forensic geologist.
She is out for a run with a male friend when her dog discovers a body. The body may have been left by the samr one who murdered another young girl years ago.
