She studied languages at the University of London's Westfield College. Jane and Stephen Hawking met through mutual college friends at a party in 1962. Hawking was diagnosed with motor neurone disease (also known as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or ALS) in 1963. Even aware of his consequent shortened life expectancy and limitations, the couple became engaged in 1964 and married in 1965 in their shared hometown of St Albans. They had three children: Robert, born in 1967, Lucy, born in 1970, and Timothy, born in 1979.
After years of working on her doctoral thesis through Westfield College, Hawking received her PhD in medieval Spanish poetry in April 1981.
In 1999, she wrote an autobiography about her first marriage to Stephen Hawking, Music to Move the Stars: A Life with Stephen.
In 2009, an updated version of the autobiography was republished under the title Travelling to Infinity: My Life with Stephen and was subsequently made into the award-winning film The Theory of Everything. Following the release of the film, Hawking discussed her life on BBC Radio 4's Woman's Hour in January 2015.

I received this book from the publisher to review and really wasn’t sure what to expect, I never read any of Jane Hawkings but after reading this I will defiantly read another book by her.
This book just sucks you into the world Ruth, her journey and her surroundings.
I really enjoyed the world building is was beautiful and vividly described and I couldn’t help feeling like I’m part of it. The story was smooth, easy to follow and very engaging.
The book does however end on a cliffhanger, which makes me look forward to the next book even more.
Some parts were a bit slower than other but over all a great book and I really recommend it.

Esse livro foi incrível de ler!! Foi extremamente prazeroso acompanhar o crescimento de Ruth tanto como pianista quanto como pessoa, ver todas as evoluções e desenvolvimento de cada personagem foi um deleite! Hawking soube muito bem expressar cada sentimento descrito no livro, e até os que eram subentendidos.

El libro cuenta una excelente historia de crecimiento. Acompañamos a Ruth durante su niñez entera y también en el inicio de su próxima fase.
Aunque es muy interesante, sentí que algunas partes fueron un poco innecesarias. Además, la manera en la que vendieron este libro hace parecer que la historia va a tener más influencia histórica, y eso me había llamado la atención. Infelizmente, ese no es el enfoque.
Si tuviera que decir cuál es, diría que es crecer y aprender a vivir, aprender a soñar y a luchar.

Cosa siamo senza i nostri segreti e le nostre passioni? La vita avrebbe lo stesso brivido senza di essi?
Non lo sappiamo, ma molto spesso ci rifugiamo nei sogni per immaginare il nostro futuro.
La vita di Ruth è stata travolta dalla passione per la musica e lei ne ha fatto un'ancora di salvezza.
Care amiche, oggi vi parlo di una storia molto piacevole. "La mia musica segreta" di Jane Hawking, un romanzo edito dalla casa editrici Piemme.
Ci troviamo negli anni '50 in Inghilterra. Dopo la seconda guerra mondiale, le famiglie cercavano di integrarsi al meglio nella società. La situazione famigliare della piccola Ruth non è delle migliori: una madre che vuole stare al centro dell'attenzione e un padre succube della moglie. Grazie alla sua immaginazione, la piccola Ruth si può dimenticare del suo stato attuale e va a rifugiarsi nei ricordi dell'estate passate con i nonni nella pittoresca campagna a Beech Grove, che le regalano pezzi di vita migliore. La sua vita cambia quando ha appena cinque anni e nella casa dei nonni il suo sguardo si posa su un grande mostro nero. Gli occhi di Ruth lo studiano curioso e, grazie alla nonna, imparerà a suonare il pianoforte. Una passione ereditata e un talento innato. Ma cosa succede se devi allontanarti da ciò che ti rende felice? Si diventa tristi quando i sogni sono troppo lontani.
E se un giorno, per caso, ad un passo dai tuoi occhi vedi ciò che ti manca terribilmente? Grazie ad una persona speciale, Rhut danzerà di nuovo nel suo sogno, ma questo le costerà altri segreti.

Ho amato tantissimo il rapporto che la piccola bambina ha con i nonni, ed odiato la madre. Ho adorato i brani citati, tant'è che a volte mi sono trovata a curiosare sul web. Questo è un romanzo che tocca le corde del nostro cuore facendoci riflettere sui veri valori della vita e che ci permette di credere che da una semplice passione si può cambiare la scia del nostro destino. La narrazione all'inizio è lenta, ma poi scorre facilmente. Lo stile della Hawking è molto passionale e sensibile, sopratutto nel finale che ha reso davvero molto toccante. Ma non sarò io a svelarvelo, vi toccherà leggerlo! Alla prossima.

I just bought this book on a second-hand thrift store when I saw the cover and author, it made me more curious that this could be a great story. Silent Music, is a coming of age story about understanding the effects of the past and why people are behaving their way that will keep us wondering. A young girl who pursued her passion eventhough the world, her family, in the first place were the main hindrance to her steps. A nice read although there were some dull and stagnant parts in the middle. J. Hawking, also delivered more infusions on musical terminologies like how musicians were made. There is also a "prequel" novel which is about the protagonist's mother which I already purchased as e-book, hoping to solve the mysteries here in the first book.

It took me a long while to get really interested in this book. The story was interesting enough, but I felt it was more appropriate to a teen or young adult, and pushed myself to keep going in the hope that I would become more intrigued. At times it was a bit of a stretch to believe some of the events, especially when the main character was so young. About two thirds of the way through the plot became more interesting, but never very complex, and the end was pretty predictable. I would have liked a more satisfactory resolution of the relationship with Piers, but maybe that could be in a follow up work.

Absurdamente negligenciada pelos pais, em razão do egoísmo (doença mental?) da mãe, e estimulada pela avó, desenvolve uma incrível aptidão musical, e segue os passos da tia, pianista famosa, precocemente morta em razão de um câncer.
De repente, no último quarto do livro, o enredo enlouquece, a ponto de parecer que foi terminado às pressas, e por alguém que não havia lido o restante.

Easy to read, but the ending gives away very little. I didn't realise it was part one of a trilogy so I'm waiting to read the next 2 books before I make full judgement.

È un libro spettacolare!! Inizialmente magari nn ti attira molto però continuando a leggere mi è piaciuto sempre di più, poi per una persona che ama la musica come me allora è perfetto come libro.
