After being terrorized by her father’s right-hand man, Neave Alvarez wants nothing more than to spend time with the love of her life. But her father, the disgraced former US Climate Secretary, suddenly turns up in China, not behind bars where he’s supposed to be. And he’s more dangerous than ever, demanding she dump her fiancé, calling him a “subhuman clone.”
In “Albedo Effect, Book 2 of The Shade Ring Trilogy,” Neave faces threats from her cold-blooded father, along with one obstacle after another thrown in her path by an overheated Mother Nature. While trying to protect her loved ones, she’s sucked into the escalating political upheaval over her father’s plan to shield the Earth from the sun’s rays. Mass protests spread like wildfire as world leaders lash out over who decides on a plan that impacts every nation around the globe.

This is the second book in an exciting thriller trilogy set in the future when the human race is having to face imminent disaster because of dramatic climate change. The issue facing the world is how to tackle the changes and this is the cause of conflict between governments and also families. Neave's disgraced father, the former climate secretary, is still trying to influence opinion in the direction of his preferred solution but his motives are far from altruistic. Neave and her family face danger at every turn as she speaks out against her father. He is also intent on ending her relationship with the man she loves. All the ingredients for a fast paced thriller, which grips you from the start and will keep you turning the pages.I am looking forward to reading the final part.
This is an action-packed sci-fi adventure set 100 years in the future where climate change and pollution have taken their toll on the planet and a radical new mechanism is required to protect the earth from the sun. I've read the first book and it was time for me to catch up on the next instalment. After a harrowing escape from the clutches of her father's right-hand man, Neave Alvarez wants nothing more than to spend time with the love of her life. But her father, the disgraced former Climate Secretary, turns up in China, not behind bars where he's supposed to be. More dangerous than ever, he demands she dump her fiancé, calling him a "subhuman clone." Good characterisation and plotting kept me turning the pages. Looking forward to book 3.
The Shade Ring continues with high levels of excitement, action, and twists comparable to the first book. Neave and Will go through challenges in their relationship as Neave's father stays one step ahead, scheming his evil plans. Trying to outmaneuver her father, while saving and protecting the ones she loves, Neave will have to make some hard decisions. The accumulating environmental problems are described beautifully as the author creates scenes that are thought-provoking, intense and page turners. The book ends with questions that make the reader look forward to the third book in the series.
Whew! The second book of this exciting trilogy is like being on a runaway train. Every time I thought I had my equilibrium back, a new twist slammed into me. Connie Lacy has created an epic bad guy in Roberto Alvarez and he is revealed as a thoroughly corrupt, twisted, control freak in book 2. I particularly liked the emphasis on society's treatment of cloned human beings in "Albedo Effect." The parallels to the treatment of LGBTQ folks are striking and uncomfortable. As soon as I get a few chores done, I'm downloading the last book.
Another exhilarating read in The Shade Ring trilogy, as we follow Neave Alvarez on her quest for justice -- for her world, and her family and loved ones. The setting really drove home the consequences of unchecked climate change and pollution, challenging me to think about my own habits in the day-to-day, and I loved seeing Neave develop as a character. In this story, Neave is challenged and accosted at nearly every turn, and her growth as a character is stark... and I want more. Definitely can't wait to have book three in my hands, because this story -- though satisfying -- left me eager for more.
