Presents two classic tales of terror, in which the protagonists put their souls in peril by their criminal activities and hope their evil deeds do not catch up to them.
Robert Louis Balfour Stevenson was a Scottish novelist, poet, and travel writer, and a leading representative of English literature. He was greatly admired by many authors, including Jorge Luis Borges, Ernest Hemingway, Rudyard Kipling and Vladimir Nabokov.
Most modernist writers dismissed him, however, because he was popular and did not write within their narrow definition of literature. It is only recently that critics have begun to look beyond Stevenson's popularity and allow him a place in the Western canon.
This is a fabulously produced graphic novel. Robert Smith's illustrations and layout are crisp, arresting, and quite remarkable. Unlike many graphic novels, the font is large and very clear to read. Stevenson really touched on some very dark themes in this story which is still true for our times.
Short and sweet. The message was clear and to the point. Although Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde was already a short novella to begin with, the graphic novel was even shorter. Although the comic art was somewhat amateur in nature, it’s still possessed a sense of maturity cleanliness that afforded crystal clear delivery for imagery understanding. Two sides of a man facing a dilemma. Light and darkness and ultimately in the end, darkness ins. A short brutal tale perfect to get you in the mood for Autumn. I will go to say that despite its simplistic nature, there was one entirely brutal scene, body horror, and to see it in this version, made it worth all the while. Something new to offer that otherwise would have been seen in the original work.
The second story, The Body Snatchers, was interesting to say the least, yet the ending left me quite perplexed. Not sure what Robert Louis Stevenson was trying to accomplish. It sure as hell shocked me, but why? Why oh why?
A story about grave robbing for science and a guilty conscious. Imagine if Victor Frankenstein felt guilty about stealing all those body parts! This is a short story so I do not have much to say, but I liked it better than Jekyll and Hyde. What helped is that this story we spend the whole story with the fellows committing these heinous acts of thievery. It was fun to read a horror story set in Scotland instead of good ole England. Not only did I get Mary Shelley's Frankenstein vibes, but McFarlene reminded me of Victor with their rationalizing it all. The story would probably feel creepier if I had read it in October in the evening. BTW This isn't the edition I read this from I just picked it to display for my reading challenge.
My Review: I have never read the original Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde but I have really enjoyed graphic novel adaptations of classics lately. I love the art style in this one, it really suits the era and setting of the story. However, I felt like I was missing part of the story, it seemed like it was really condensed and there were pieces of the puzzle missing. I was hoping for something bone chilling but it wasn't quite the horror I was expecting. It does give a good idea of the story, and may suit younger readers well and introduce them to classic horror.
Honestly, as for a faithful adaption of material in an easy to consume method, this isn't bad. However, the art does leave a bit to be desired. There are very obvious places where lighting wasn't considered and tracing has occurred, resulting in weird poses. Also, while the main story worked fine, I struggled with The Body Snatcher as I had never read that particular piece before and didn't feel it was being delivered to me as well as it should. I will be putting this in a classroom library anyway as this could be a nice introduction into a classic horror mystery for some brave teen.
Loved the art style. I would say both stories get 4 stars. I generally enjoyed the body snatcher more I think, but the ending was just??? It was chilling (especially with the aid of the illustrations), but what? Either way I recommend if you like horror and or graphic novels
the illustrations are super cool, and i love the message of the story but like, i just got bored. graphic novels aren’t for me, i only read this because i have to teach it. i know if this was written as a short story i would have been much more engaged
This was great up until the end - it leaves off with Hyde's death and not Jekyll's letter explaining everything! I did enjoy The Body Snatchers at the back of the book, though.
Is it a good or bad thing that when I read classic books I think of Wishbone episodes?
This was my first time reading this and I did enjoy it. It's a great story and told from the point of view of a side character in the way I associate with a number of horror/mystery classics.
“The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde & The Body Snatcher (A Graphic Novel Horror)” by Robert Louis Stevenson, Robert Smith (Illustrator) ISBN 9780857624093
Wonderful graphic novel, very well presented. ****
“But in the hands of Edward Hyde, those 'pleasures' soon began to turn towards the monstrous ...” (p54)
“'We have not seen you much of late, Jekyll.' 'Indeed, I have been kept very busy with my latest project – renovating our parish church.' 'So I hear. Such works must do you the wealth of good – you are the picture of fine health.'” (p89)
“'Yes, after a, I am quite like them – an upstanding member of society. For the rest of my life I will do good works, and redeem my past.' …. [he begins to regress back to Mr Hyde] … 'No, it cannot be!'” (p91)
I read this with my beginning English learners. It does the job well enough so that the kids were able to deduct the main themes of the story. I wish it would’ve included smaller details from the novel, but overall it’s a good replacement for the actual text. The kids were able to make connections to their own lives and their own “dark sides”.
This was my first graphic novel I read. I already knew the story of Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde but I found this graphic novel really intriguing and loved the artwork and the humor in it.
The art was pretty basic and could've been way more creative for the story at hand however it tells the story decently. For a $5 graphic novel from ollie's it wasn't too bad lol
This was a quick and easy read. it was the story of dr. Jekyll and mr. Hyde. It was a nice little story and I absolutely love the illustration throughout it definitely brought the story to life. however I found the ending to be a bit different. I have read the original dr. Jekyll and mr. Hyde years ago and I do not remember it going quite like this book LOL either way it was a nice little read.
