Times Square, 1986: the home of New York’s red light district where strip clubs, porno theatres and petty crime prevails. When a chance encounter for Peepbooth worker Roxy Bell leads to the brutal murder of a public access pornographer, the erotic performer and her punk rock ex-partner Nick Zero soon find themselves under fire from criminals, cops, and the city elite, as they begin to untangle a complex web of corruption leading right to city hall. Like The Naked City, there are eight million stories in The Deuce. This is one of them.
Leave it to Christa Faust and Hard Case Crime to drag me back into reading comic books! It's my first full comic book issue or graphic novel that I've read in about 15 years. When I heard that Hard Case Crime was jumping into the comic publishing world I couldn't resist, especially after learning that the one of the first series would be written by acclaimed crime authors Christa Faust and Gary Phillips. Peepland was an idea spawned by Faust's experiences working in the New York City peep booths back in the day. It takes place in 1986 NYC and is about Roxy Bell, a peepshow artist in a booth at Peepland in Manhattan, who's minding her own business cleaning up after a customer, when a colleague, pornographer Dirty Dick, runs into her booth and stashes a VHS tape. But little does she know, a coupla hard dudes and the cops are after Dirty Dick and this bit of contraband.
The first issue does a great job of dropping you into the world of pre-Guiliani 80's Manhattan (filled with porno theaters, pawn shops, and graffiti) and the people who roam the island. The art is engaging, with the saturated colors that we've come to expect from 80's stories, especially in the neon-infused cover! The dialogue is great, the story moves at a nice clip, and the characters are well introduced. I can't wait to learn more about AJ, Nick, Aiesha, and of course Roxy herself. I loved the introduction of the Uncle Leo character, which not only added more depth to Roxy's character, but also added an unfortunate New York 80's element that I was not expecting. I can't wait to read the next issue. By combining Faust's knowledge of the time and place, Gary Phillips's knowledge of writing for comic books, and both of their great noir sensibilities, Hard Case Crime and Titan Comics should have a hit on their hands!
Hard Case Crime and Titan Books have ventured into the world of graphic novels with Peepland and Triggerman. This glossy comic/ graphic novel features high quality sexy artwork and racy story lines. The story features peepshows in Time Square ( before the area got cleaned up), voyeurs, thugs, and graphic violence. There are numerous alternative covers featured in the end of the book on par with the wonderful artwork on Hard Case Crime novels. It is more comic length than novel length.
I'm not that surpised that I liked this one; I love Christa Faust's work and, if anyone could write a noir story set in a peep show place, that'd be her. The story seems really interesting, the characters do to and, all in all, I'm hoping the remaining issues will be as good as this one.
So cool that Hard Case brings out this comic book collaboration between Christa Faust and Gary Phillips. Beautiful illustrated by Andrea Camerini. Just gorgeous. Captures the aura of both 1980s New York city and classic comic book style. Plus a great crime/noir vibe. Strong plot and characters. Should be a fun read!
Great start to the new series from Christa Faust and Gary Phillips that nicely portrays the sleazy and grimy 1980s era Time Square scene and it's inhabitants.
Man runs pell mell through the crowd at peepshows. He stops at one booth and stashes the VHS tape cassette. Later, he got himself killed in a trolley accident. This usually happens in New York. The girl, who owned the booth, went to see her ex. Both watched it and found just how explosive this is. The two goons who chased the guy with the tape, were looking for that tape. Someone’s gonna catch hell for this. This story gets interesting. Good art work. Recommended.
I didn't know if I would enjoy a graphic novel, but this was put out by Hard Case Crime so I took a flee on it. Glad I did. reminiscent of the gritty NY of the 70's and 80's that I grew up and lived in, it moves along quickly. I'll just say...stuff happens.
Christa Faust is one of my favorite contemporary crime fiction authors. I only wish she had more output because I just devour everything she writes and can't wait for the next book or short story. So I was very pleased to hear that she was doing a comic book series with another crime fiction legend, Gary Phillips. These two knock it out of the park with issue #1. The series is set in the peepshow world of mid-1980's NYC, so you've already got a great character at the center of the story.
The illustrations are vivid and captivating. The writing is pure Faust and Phillips. In other words, it's gritty, edgy, and as hardboiled as they come. I'm excited about this series after reading the first issue and looking forward to more. By the way Christa, if you're reading please write more stuff! You are the best!
I'm not really the hard-boiled crime sort, but there's been a lot of positive anticipation for the pulp novel imprint's addition of a comics line. This is certainly good enough to compete with what's out there, and the attractive cover art and design will draw in even those unfamiliar with the imprint's offerings (like me). The story takes place in the 1980's and revolves around a videocassette that is witness to a murder that was dropped off in a hurry at an adult entertainment venue.
Amazingly raw and thrilling noir from the grungy ranks of New York City as she was in much of the 1970's/80's. The characters the mystery and the the peep booths are all worth reading!
