Nerys Leigh writes wildly romantic stories about American mail order brides, which could be considered strange as she is British and has never been married. But she thinks the old adage of writing what you know is codswallop.

She thinks cheesecake and white chocolate are mankind's greatest inventions. One day she’ll eat a white chocolate cheesecake and her life will be complete.

She loves nothing more than to guide her heroes and heroines to true love and then find out that other people adore her characters as much as she does.

If you sign up for her newsletter at http://eepurl.com/b-Gj2T she will he so ridiculously grateful that she’ll give you a free novella called The Blacksmith’s Heart, the story of a widowed single father who finds the love of his life a second time.

Nerys hasn’t ever used the word codswallop before. It’s likely she never will again.

This is an automatic two-star rating because I skim-read or scan-read the whole book almost from the beginning. My primary beef is that I dislike when authors take social or cultural norms from today and force them on characters from the 1800s. In fact, I would have liked this story better had it been set in the current day instead of long ago.

One example: I believe that no one in that day, including the pastor, would have approved of Adam and Amy living together while unmarried--not even Adam would have been so open-minded about it given how "honorable" he seemed about everything else. That would have been a huge deal then. Even if Amy herself was okay with them living under the same roof, I believe the general population's consensus would have been that it was not OK and I think the fallout would have been more severe. This was one of the premises of the book--it was the conflict of the book. And I felt it was historically out of place. I just struggled to read it from there.

There were other things that seemed illogical or not period-appropriate--modern expressions (I should have taken notes), other situations, etc.

George seemed fairly liberal-minded, once again not matching the period, to give her the job in the stables where he and Amy were alone together everyday and doing what would have been thought of then as "men's" work. I thought it was illogical that a kitchen maid/street child would know much about merchandising horse tack, also.

I thought it was illogical how Amy could muck out stables (with bare-hands-to-the-shovel half the day) for a full work day and only be slightly sore the next day. Yes, she was probably used to hard work at her last job but not shoveling, etc. Completely different muscle set.

I thought it was beyond illogical that Courtney would come clear across the United States chasing after a maid and $75 when he had a "harem" of maids at home as well as money for women of the evening. Travel then was not how travel is today. That was a monumental undertaking. It would have been more believable had he gone, say, one state over, but not cross-country. I also wondered exactly how a kitchen maid could lay her hands on $75.

And if that weren't enough, I thought it was doubly illogical that Mrs. Courtney would follow him across the United States. How could she have ever even suspected what her husband was up to when she was gone from home all the time? It was also illogical that she be allowed to give character evidence against her husband as character evidence is not admissible in court. (She could testify to whether there had been a contract but not testify as to Mr. Courtney's propensities.)

Those are just the things I can recall now that I'm finished reading. I didn't take notes.

I can tell the author put a lot of care into drafting her story but I could not look past my pet peeve in historical fiction of modernity intruding into the historical setting. Once I hit that mental hurdle, the illogical things just stood out to me. Given the other Goodreads ratings of the book to date, I am a lone voice here. If that modern vibe in historical fiction doesn't bother you, I think you'd probably like this book.

Orphan Amy Watts lies when she agrees to become a mail order bride. She has no intention of marrying Adam Emerson, the bank and post office clerk from a tiny town in Northern California. She only knows she wants to go to San Francisco—as far away as possible from her rich, influential and lecherous New York employer.

Adam has prayed for God to bring him a wife, and he is overjoyed at his first sight of Amy—she is beautiful. He’s also pleased to find out she’s a likeable person—until she confesses that she doesn’t want to marry him. But she’s going to do the honourable thing and stay in town long enough to pay him back the money he spent in bringing her here.

While Amy was a great character and I fully understood her motive for her inappropriate behaviour, it was Adam who caught my attention. He’s the perfect gentleman, the perfect romance hero (if he has a fault, it is perhaps that he has no faults. Hey, it’s 1870 and the guy can cook and do laundry!).

I very much liked the Christian content—Adam and Amy each had a strong Christian faith, and this showed consistently throughout the book. I thought the writing was strong, especially for a debut author, and I especially liked the humour sprinkled throughout.

Amy was one of five mail order brides delivered to the tiny town of Green Hill Creek, and I think the remaining novels in the Escape to the West series will be the stories of the other four women. Overall, No One’s Bride is an excellent debut novel, and I’m now looking forward to the next book in the series—Sara’s story. And waiting for Jo’s story because of what wasn’t said …

Recommended for fans of Christian historical romance from authors such as Mary Connealy, Karen Witemeyer, Regina Jennings, Carol Cox, Jen Turano and Lucy Thompson.

This is the nicest mail order bride book I have read to date. The characters are believable and real people and the plot is excellent.

It's a super cute book, I love this kind of romance and the character I could relate to her throughout some of the book. I really love the story line and how the relationship between the two characters and how they grow.

No One’s Bride by Nerys Leigh is a sweet mail-order bride romance ideal for fans of Mary Connealy, Kelly Eileen Hake or Melissa Jagears. There’s humor and romance and faith and even a little suspense in this debut novel, providing a little something for everyone.

I loved Adam, the hero in this book. He’s a little bit awkward when it comes to Amy (which just makes him even more adorable), and he’s a whole lot sincere when it comes to honoring and respecting her (which just makes him even more adore-able). His chivalry is swoonworthy and his quiet-but-lived-out faith is equally so.

Another of my favorite characters is George, the livery owner. I can’t go into too much detail about why I love George because I don’t want to spoil anything for you… but let’s just say that my heart melted all over itself on Amy’s second day of work. And the storyline with Amy and Clementine really paralleled Adam’s relationship with Amy too.

This is the first in a series that follows the other mail order brides that arrived with Amy. As such, we are treated to teasers of what their stories may hold, but only as seen through Amy’s eyes. And the author knows how to get my curiosity up – revealing that the girls are all having a chat to catch up but then… WE DON’T GET TO READ IT YET. Argh. lol. I must read the next books. Must.

Bottom Line: Lots of giggles to be had in this cute debut novel, as well as moments that may leave you a bit teary-eyed. Not to mention the romantical moments when you may need to break out your fan. The author’s good natured sense of humor peeks through on each page, without overwhelming the story, and I loved her end notes where she admits that yeah, the spellings are British because she is too and she hopes that doesn’t offend us as we read this American western. Haha!

I loved the way the relationship developed between Amy and Adam. It was sweet, tender, and funny. Most of the books I read of this time make laughing at something to be unladylike so sometimes humorous moments are dealt with them trying to contain their laughter. It was nice to see two people laughing and joking with each other.

I read a review that didn't like the idea that there wasn't much of a problem with two unmarried people living together in this Christian romance novel, specifically with the pastor. And I do agree with that. While there was some backlash in this time era it would have been a major no no. As for her working in the livery that was too odd, but I didn't find that as out of context as the living arrangements. I would have rather had Amy go and live with the Pastor and his wife, but overall I did like the book and found it a nice romance.

Great!

This wonderfully written story flows with a natural rhythm and natural dialog which includes Bible verses but doesn’t feel preachy. The characters deal with overcoming issues like lack of trust and not standing up for one’s self through stepping out in faith. Enjoy 💜

Reviewed at Historically Romantic

No One’s Bride starts off the Escape to the West series with a poignant, emotional story sure to bring a misty eye, a few chuckles and the sense that these people are exactly where they’re meant to be. Five young women will make the train trip from the East to Northern California in the hopes of finding love and happiness as mail order brides, well, four of then have those dreams but one is looking only for escape from a horrid situation. Friendships will form on the way West and we’ll get a tiny bit of each young lady’s story as they arrive at the train station in Green Hill Creek as they come face to face with their futures.

Amy is a young woman of strong faith, yet she’s resorted to lying to the young man who paid for her train ticket to be his bride. Actually, Amy never intended to even meet Adam, but to slip away immediately upon arrival but that didn’t go as intended. She has no desire to marry any man for she believes that no one can take care of her better than herself. And perhaps she has reason to believe that as she was orphaned at a young age and life has been far from easy for her. The final straw was the actions of her lecherous employer in New York City. This was her only way to escape from his circle of influence with the dream of heading to a pipe dream of working at a grand hotel in San Francisco. She had every intention of paying Adam back for the money he has lost… but soon Amy will find herself as a house guest, and a woman starting over right where she landed.

I was easily swept into this world and immediately understood that Amy doesn’t have a bad bone in her body. Desperation has reared its ugly head to have her act against her nature, but she cannot or will not see any other solution but to get to San Francisco. I fell in love with Adam myself. He’s charming, a bit awkward, does the right things and stands beside Amy throughout the troubles that will soon surround her. If I was looking for a mail order groom, he’d be at the top of my list.

We’ll discover the usual residents of any small town community. Some with hearts of gold, and others who live for gossip and trouble making. I had no trouble imagining this small town, and the secondary characters made this story come alive with the variety of good, so-so and downright awful people.

The road to a happy ending for Amy and Adam is full of potholes, but it’s so easy to see the affection growing between them. Absolutely loved George, and you’ll discover why quite easily. When a horrid attacker and a lecherous self-absorbed jerk make trouble for Amy and Adam that bond becomes even tighter. I loved this couple and enjoyed spending time with them as they made this journey to love and happiness. As the other young ladies own romantic stories are told I’m hoping to get another glimpse or two of Amy and Adam as they grow into their relationship. If you love a good Western Historical Romance then you’ll want to check out No One Bride.

I own a Kindle edition of this story.

No Ones Bride

Amy worked as a kitchen maid, scrubbing and working hard from a young age, she was an orphan and the orphanage was cruel to the children. She though she would be compensated for working as she was told when she turned twenty one years old she would be given the money. She asks the man who laughs and says her room and board comes out of the money and if she wants to visit his bed for two months or years he would pay her. She tried to escape and he forced him self onto her but the butler knocks and she flees the room. She now trusts no one who is a man.

Adam is lonely and prays to God that he will find a wife who will love him. He sends for one and she faints before going to the church. He takes her home to rest, but what will happened he finds out she doesn’t want to marry him.

Fantastic story! I enjoyed reading this book!
No adult content. No swearing. Truthfully a relationship with God throughout this book.

LOOKING FOR CHRISTIAN LOVE STORY READ THIS

3 STARS is what I gave because of Amy's fake naive attitude of she prays daily for love & friendship but never believes it could possibly be and Adam's letters had way to much information which could allow somebody to just lie to him & use him while pretending to be like his letters. With that being said, Amy and Adam, as a couple prayed for guidance in their relationship whatever it might be, and they also said Grace before meals and just thanked God for life in general. This story is great after you get past the little problems, and follow those two in their entertaining lives as they work and get to know each other, even spend a few days in same jail cell. WARNING: CHRISTIAN VIBES, BIBLE QUOTES, PRAYERS AGE: Age of understanding! Thank you, and God Bless!

To be loved and protected

This was a very good book written by Nerys Leigh and I really enjoyed reading it. A young woman running away from a horrible employer, accepting a marriage proposal, a mail order bride, no real plans to marry, meeting her groom, putting off the marriage, going home, being truthful, hurt feelings, she finds a job, stables, horses, hard work, needing to pay him back, helping the stable owner, cleaning stalls, going to church, rumors, being attacked, protecting her, falling in love with her, feelings for him, losing a job, will her ex-employer find her? What will happen if he does? Will there be a happy ever after for them? I would recommend this book to everyone. Buy the book and enjoy reading it.

Such a good story

This is the first book I have read by this author but it won’t be my last. I couldn’t stop reading and read the whole book in one day. This story had so many twists and turns it was fun to read and find out what would happen next. The main characters were charming and extremely likable. Most of the characters were but some were not. I don’t like to tell the whole story in my reviews, reviewers that do that ruin the the story for me. This was a clean read and the main characters relied on a deep faith in the Lord. I think this is a book everyone will enjoy. Happy reading.

Adam ❤️ Amy

A lot can happen in a month. Amy had purposed in her mind that she was not going to marry anyone, even though she signed up to be a Mail-Order Bride. She was on the run to San Francisco. But…as things will happen, she was stopped. Later when she told Adam she did not want to marry him, he was astounded. But he still had great affection for her and decided to go along with her and help her out and hopefully change her mind. This is a really good story with several things happening in the plot that will keep you reading and on the edge of your chair. P.S. Keep a box of tissue close by.

Arriving as a mail order bride in Green Hill Creek, Amy knows she can't go through with the wedding. Once off the train, she plans to escape her husband to be. Adam is handsome and nice. She tells him she has no intention of being his wife. She will stay with him until she pays back her train ticket. She then wants to move on. Finding a job, she works hard. Amy's past catches up to her. Will Amy and Adam overcome her past and find a way to love one another? A very good book that I enjoyed reading!

This is not a typical Mail Order Bride story. The hero Adam runs the local post office and is part time at the bank in Green Hill Creek. He is a man of faith and a good guy. Amy Watts was orphaned at a young age. She must get away from her abusive employer. This book has several turns and twists which I like. They merge beautifully. But things do not happen the way either expected. The added characters are great, especially George. Read it in one sitting. Highly recommended for Mail Order Bride lovers.

No One's Bride

I liked this story, but did not love it and that is why I gave it three stars.

No One's Bride is supposed to be romance, but I felt that was what the story lacked the most. I understood the author wanted to develop a friendship between the characters before romance took place, but it became frustrating. The characters were attracted to each other and to not let them reveal their feelings until almost the end of the book was an injustice to the story.

A western Christian romance .

If you like Christian western romance stories then you will love this book. The characters are well defined and with the description of each person you can see them in in your mind as you read about them. Every time you think you know what is going to happen a new twist is introduced and you learn something new. A little violence and some romance keeps your attention which makes for a good storyline . Looking forward to her next books.

"A Wonderful Story"

This is a best seller in Christian Fiction of a mail order bride with no intentions of getting married. Her only hope is to escape from a dangerous situation. Young post master Adam Emerson may just be able to change her mind, even after she cons him into paying her travel expenses to the west coast, Green Hill Creek in California. This historical romance is very well written, intense at times, and totally absorbing. A great romantic story.

Have mostly given up on mail-order bride books since they are all the same. This one had a different twist to it which, with its ups and down, maintained my attention throughout. Without going into specifics, it included one dilemma after another as the 'chosen' groom stuck by the 'intended' bride's side throughout. Although the ending was somewhat predictable, after all they went through together, it would have been devastating otherwise. A good clean Christian-based read.

Easy, clean and romantic

I love reading books with a realistically strong female lead character and at least one unexpected twist, no ones bride fit the bill perfectly. The lead is believably strong and the book did have at least one twist I wasn’t expecting. Usually as I read this kind of book i can go through and predict almost the whole book. The ending was still happily predictable with a few unexpected twists to get to their happily ever after.

Everyone deserves a second chance

Amy had no choice but to run away from her living situation. She has arrived on the train to meet her future husband Adam. She knows that this isn't going to be forever as she can't stay. Adam is upset that Amy lied about wanting to marry him but he does understand. But do they have a chance? Just when they thought that they had figured everything out someone comes to destroy it all. Is there hope for them? A good read

Ready for Hallmark to make No Ones Bride into a movie.

The story grabbed me in the first chapter. It was totally believable and I could picture ever happening as if I was watching a movie. Amy was a strong woman who would do anything necessary to survive. You have the undiscovered love story; the small town gossips; the villain; the arrogant, narcissist antagonist; and the misinterpret rival.

The story show the very strong faith of the characters.

This book has a little of everything-mystery, romance, surprising plot twists and characters that are so much more than what you see on the surface kept me reading until the reveal. The story show the very strong faith of the characters. I enjoyed reading this faith filled story that surrounds the characters. My opinion is the story could have been shorter. But over all very good. Thank you.

Very good book, it us true God does work in strange ways, but always in the best interest of the people involved.

This story shows how difficult it was for woman in the 1800, wether in the cities or out west, it was the same. woman had no rights. The law sided with the men unless complete proof was available to prove her innocent.

This story was thought provoking due to circumstances around me. God used it to speak to me. The story itself had a different slant with a mail-order bride who did not intend to be a mail-order bride. She went through quite a bit before realizing her hopes and dreams could be met by staying where she was and marrying her mail-order husband.

Wonderful Christian story

I usually don't read western stories, but Christian mail order bride story, made me curious. Very well done. Christ's comfort, even when life gets hard, was very uplifting. Circumstances led to what were wrong actions, but basically honest character, allowed those actions to be worked out through GOD'S mysterious ways.

Clean Christian historical novel

It wasn't a easy read for me, some of the characters were not easy to connect with. The problems of sexual abuse were as prevalent as it is today at the hands of powerful people attacking the young and innocent. The main characters seemed to lean on Jesus for daily needs. Life wasn't so easy in those days but very interesting.
