People fear what they don’t understand. Maybe that’s why they all fear me. I’m sure they have their reasons, I just couldn’t possibly care what any of them are. As long as they’re afraid. Born to a drug dealer father and a drug addict mother, I’ve been through enough to make a normal person lose their mind five times over. I’m not normal. Normal is for weak people, and I'm anything but weak.
My childhood was made of nightmares, but there was one light in all my darkness. Her name was Reina Wilde, and when my mother would hit me or pass out in the middle of the living room on her high, I would confide in her. We were from completely different worlds, but she meant something to me, though I never figured out what, because she left. In the years that followed, I built a reputation for myself, and let go of any and all deluded notions of love.
I’ll never go straight now. It’s just too much fun taking things from people who are powerless to stop me. And make no mistake about it, I take what I want, from who I want, when I want.
I'm infamous in this city. But everything changes when, after years apart, I finally see Reina again, and she’s standing next to my enemy--the underboss of the Philadelphia mob.
It’s not just about power anymore. It’s not about respect. No, this is personal now. Gasoline has been thrown on the flame, and for Reina, I’m about to burn the whole world to the ground.

~WRITING - PLOT - PACE~ So this book started out quite good. The writing was great. The pace was good. The characters and plot engaging. That said, around 40% it started to fizzle out and I struggled to finish it. This was a LONG book. Too long in my opinion. The author really needed to tighten this story up A LOT. I mean the heroine (Reina) isn't even in the book from 40%-65%. And as much as Soloman King's character intrigued me, reading about his rise to baddie fame just wasn't that interesting. It started to pick up again around 70% but the author had pretty much lost me at that point.
~HERO~ Soloman...I liked him. I cringed a little every time the author wrote he was wearing white pants, and a diamond-crusted watch. All I kept picturing was a Jersey Shore wannabe, but OK I am not the fashion police...so whatevs (lol). He was sexy. He was tatted up. He was crazy. He was all about Reina right from the start and I really liked his friendship with Nix.
~HEROINE~ Reina...she was OK. I think her character development was hindered by the fact we never get anything from her POV (until right at the end). I just never connected with her. I didn't understand her behavior at all. We get very little background info about her family. The story of why she ghosted Soloman for seven years was a little lame. The whole Harley Quinn wannabe behavior she had when she shows up again felt forced.
~SECONDARY CHARACTERS~ This book was pretty light on secondary characters. Nix really is the only one worth mentioning. I liked him a lot. I loved his friendship with Soloman. I can see him getting his own book at some point.
~HEAT LEVEL~ Super Low. There is basically no explicit sex in this one. A couple VERY mild sex scenes and a lot of implied sex. It certainly could have done with some spicing up.
~ANGST LEVEL~ Low. I didn't find this one angsty at all. There is just a bit of OM drama and OW drama. One implied sex scene with an OW and the hero. Neither were celibate the seven years apart.
~IN THE END~ It was OK. It honestly had the bones to be a GREAT book, but it was simply too long and needed to be tightened up and fleshed out more plot wise AND character wise. It also would have benefited from having the heroines POV here and there. And of course, a little more steam would have been nice ;D At this point, I am on the fence about whether I am interested enough to continue on with the next book. Time will tell I guess.
Solomon King, the King of all kings, grew up in the school of hard knocks. Born to a neglectful junkie ho, deep in the clutches of poverty, he knew the only way he was going to find a way out was by his own blood, sweat and tears. Armed with an almost cocky attitude and a chip on his shoulder, he and his best friend, Nix, start on the path to success. Once a stick-up kid, he’s graduated to armed robbery. And the sweetest thing he’s ever met, Reina, a girl from the right side of the tracks, proved to be his ride-or-die in every way. Until the day she disappears. Fast forward seven years and Solomon is virtually at the top of his game, his biggest rival being the Philly mob who want to erase him as a threat, and surprisingly Reina is back. Is she here to hurt him or help him? You have to read the book to find out!
I really really really liked Solomon. I get that he was an anti-hero and had virtually no redeeming qualities, but there was a strange sort of honesty in his crimes. And that’s one thing about this character that you have to respect - his honesty. I also admired his fearlessness. This man was freaking BOLD! I enjoyed the action scenes, the background stories, the itty-bitty romance with Reina, and a lot in between. I was hoping that the sex scenes would be hotter, however, after reading the author’s note at the end about how he wanted this to be a book his children could read, I can understand why it was on the milder end. This story is far from over, as far as I can tell, and I look forward to whatever happens next!
Release: Feb. 5, 2018 | Genre: Romantic Suspense | POV: Male - 1st person | Heat: 2 out of 5 | Book #1 of Love & Chaos
Hmm..this was an interesting read. I'm not quite sure what to think about this book to be honest. Madman did capture my attention from the very first chapter but 35%- 40% along the way, I honestly lost interest. I felt like as though the storyline was dragging a little to long with so many unnecessary 'details'. I felt like as though the characters were trying to be something they really weren't- Almost psychotic. I feel like as if they were trying to be all 'sadistic' and 'crazy' like Joker and Quinn but it felt more impostor-ish than actually being psychotic madmen. I seriously had such high hopes for Solomon and Reina but they didn't really grasp my attention. I really could say so much more but I don't want to be harsh. Madman was an 'ok' book. Note: This book was seriously long! Unnecessarily long
Madman by WS Greer is the First book in the "Love & Chaos" series. This is the story of Reina Wilde and Solomon King. This does end with a cliffhanger setting us up for their continuing story. Solomon grew up with a drug addicted whore of a mother and had to protect himself and get things by robbing people. His only friend if you would call him that was Nix Malone. Solomon at the age of 17 had grown a reputation of being bad and would fight easily with anyone. One day while walking to the Arcade he happens to see a girl being harassed by two other kids. Solomon decided to help the girl who we later learned was Reina. Solomon would go on to become a King in a mafia where he would end up meeting up with Reina again... the only other person that had every touched his life. A good Mob / gangster type romance.
Growing up in Strawberry Mansion with a junkie for a mother, Solomon King has done whatever he needed to do to survive. He takes what he wants, when he wants, from who he wants. When you have nothing, you do everything.
Reina is the girl from the other side of the tracks. One who has it all handed to her, no questions asked. The thing is though, she doesn’t want that life. She sees what is wrong in the way her parents expect her to act, expects her to date, expects her to be friends with. She wants to be herself. The place she feels better at is Strawberry Mansion.
As we feel the relationship building between these two at their young age, it’s a bond that has been formed. One that will last a lifetime even though separation happens, one can only hope that when and if the two ever meet up again, the bond that was formed years prior will be strong enough to hold them together now that they are older.
We’re partners in crime – King and Queen of the underworld. Long may we reign.
I enjoyed reading this one. I felt the Part One really drug on, spent too much time dwelling on things that we cannot change in a teenager’s life. I really liked the friendship between Solomon and Nix and how over the years, their friendship never wavered.
Madman (Love & Chaos) It has been a while since I have had the chance to beta read, and when I had the offer from Author WS Greer on his newest book, I jumped at the chance. Reading a book form WS Greer, you never know what you are going to get, but you know it’ll be a wild ride, and Madman, did not disappoint. It was completely on target and kept my attention the entire read. WS has amazing attention to detail in his story telling so much, that he truly pulls you in to the book like you are right there with the characters.
The complexity of his main characters in this series is right on point, he gives you just enough to really feel them, but not so much as you are over stimulated by them. Solomon is one of those characters that you don’t really know how to feel about in the beginning: should you like him?, is he too far gone?, is he going to be the redeemable hero like all the rest????… well, those are all questions I had while reading the story, and you will too.
WS is a natural story teller in a raw, in your face kind of way. This book is not for faint of hearts, it is not rainbow and butterflies, it’s true, is criminal, it is badass romance… so if you are ready for walk on the wild side, take a chance on this one, it won’t disappoint!
"When it's all said and done, I'll be the King, and she'll be the Queen at my side. The two of us will reign supreme over everything we lay our eyes on and we'll bring fire and chaos to anyone who stands in our way."
Let me preface that if this book was not being released next year, it would be in my list of Top Reads of the Year. I'm a sucker for a good lovable sociopath, and these two put Harley and Joker to shame. They are addictive insanity at it's best!! Solomon and Reina are a force of nature and set fire to my kindle. Exciting and suspenseful beyond measure, this was the most fun I've had reading a couple in a long time!! I loved how the Author solved some immediate issues, yet left you salivating for more, and I will attempt to be first in line for more of these two, no doubt!! I was lost in this one until the end, and came up for air with a devilish grin...it's THAT good!! Don't miss this one!! I thank the Author for providing a copy to review!!
"We'll be damaged together-a madman and his insane woman. The perfect match made in hell. Only a beast can tame a monster." (BEST QUOTE EVER)
Anyone who knows me knows that mafia romance is my jam. I'm absolutely obsessed with and it and love the alpha hero and the strong woman that is his exception. I honestly could not get enough of Solomon and Reina.
Solomon King is from the wrong side of the tracks. Born and raised in Strawberry Mansion, he's been the king of the streets before he can remember, rising from a drug addicted mother and a poverty-stricken upbringing to becoming a boss. But when a beautiful young girl from his teenage years makes an impression on him then and throughout the years, it shapes his future and the man he becomes. I was hooked from the get go seeing their connection over the years. She was his Reina - His "Queen" and his everything and it was amazing to watch it play out.
While I enjoyed the storytelling and the early camaraderie between Solomon and Reina, I felt this novel was almost saga-like. The first part/the past retelling was also VERY long in my opinion so it took a long time for the second half/the present to get going. But overall it was a solid and compelling read and I look forward to more! 3.5 stars! ~Ratula
I LOVED this book, freaking loved everything about it the story the characters Soloman and Reina are like Bonny and Clyde on steroids only much more maniacal.
Soloman is the bad boy from the wrong side of town, he lives with his drug addict mother with no love or affection and no hope for the future. Reina is the girl who should have it all, she goes the right school, wears the latest fashion, has rich parents but she goes looking fit something more and meets Soloman.
I stayed up until 2am reading I was just so invested on the story. The character development of Soloman is amazing, we get to see him grow from the young punk in the neighbourhood that everyone avoids to the man he was always destined to be. Is he a good man ? From the start we see his sociopathic tendencies who has no fear in fact he gets a kick out of the fear and pain he inflicts
Reina is harder to pin down as a character because we don’t get much of her POV. The young girl we meet at the start gives off an innocent vibe but underneath she’s is just as much a seething mass of emotions as Soloman. Is she corrupted by him, I don’t think she is, for me they are two people intoxicated by power and they’ll use any means to get it.
This is a new for me author and now away to download some of the ones I’ve missed. Really looking forward to the next one.
"I received the ARC in exchange for a honest review.
Wow! And again WOW! I was completely addicted and it absolutely blew me away. Solomon King is an incredible character and his character development is even better. And Reina Wilde. Just holy cow! I loved how she came to be. These two are a major power couple. I honestly can’t wait for the next book. I’ll definitely be reading it! "
Madman is crazier than you expected. It's more twisted than you hoped. He is both the Joker and Harley Quinn without the bad make up.
Chaos. Absolute chaos is caused by one man, Solomon King. Once you get to know him, you will fall under his spell. You will also question your own sanity. If you like your men bad, you will love Solomon. Those looking for good boys- run, run far and fast!
I liked the writing style of this book. I liked that the author started us off with a look into Soloman's background and how he came to meet Reina. I also enjoyed Soloman's crazy side. I loved that he was psycho enough to fear nothing and was wholly unapologetic about it.
That being said, I also felt like the author gave me a look at Soloman's crazy and then just flooded me with it. After a while, he was no longer the mysterious bad@&$ and I was over it. While that didn't truly detract from the book, it went along with the fact that the author gave more details on things I didn't care about and therefore gave the book a sort of droning quality. For instance, so much time was spent telling about their teenaged years, then Reina disappeared for years and while I was okay with knowing what Soloman was doing all that time I felt like it took away from me connecting with them as the main characters; so when Reina came back into the picture, I was too disconnected to relate and then the book ended. I wish I had more of Reina's POV.
This wasn't one of those books where I felt like I absolutely had to know what would happen next, but more along the lines of I'm JUST interested enough to keep going and finish it. In spite of that, it seemed to pick up more at the end and leads me to believe that the next book could be much better, so I'll definitely continue the series.
Ok seriously? Solomon King is mine! <3 He's all types of twisted and I loved every minute of it.
So much happens from when Solomon and Reina meet as teenagers and years later when their adults. It's what shapes them to be who they are together.
Every time I read a book by WS Greer, I get more and more addicted to his writing. I love when I am done with a book and I can't help but smile. That's when you know you've read a damn good book. Twists and turns I didn't expect, page after page..just hooked. Can we also give a shout out to Solomon's right hand man Nix? I loved him too and I hope he gets a story if his own :)
This book was everything! Solomon and Reina are not to be messed with. He's the King and she's his Queen <3
Wow, what an amazing story this is! Reina is the golden girl, who can have whatever she wants, but she does not want this lifestyle. Solomon has had a tough upbringing, doing whatever he has to survive, and which has left him as a dark and ruthless psycho. When these two meet as teenagers, they are instantly drawn to each other, and when they reconnect as adults, life has shaped them into the characters they are now. No spoilers; this is so worth the read, you will not be disappointed! This is a phenomenal story, which had me hooked and intrigued throughout. I love this authors’ work, and highly recommend his work for all readers, and I cannot wait to read the next book in this amazing series!
A beautifully dark, twisted and well written story that takes you hostage and will hold your attention right to the very end... then leave you wanting so much more! Superb writing so much so, that I was well and truly engrossed, completely addicted to Solomon and Reina's crazy and brutal journey. Such an easy 5 stars to give.
Solomon King and Reina Wilde are definitely a force to be reckoned with, crazy people from very different ends of the spectrum, perfectly matched, together they take no prisoners. Throughout the book I could feel their intense connection and seriously burning chemistry.
I loved this book so much I couldn't put it down - today I'm suffering with so little sleep! I'm eagerly waiting for more in this series. This author is new to me and I now need to find more of his work.
I received the ARC in exchange for a honest review.
5Stars OMG!! What an amazing book that was it was one of the best books I have I read for a long time. The title describes Solomon King to a T and what a character he really was but he wasn't alone in the chaos that flew from the pages of this book. His sidekick and best friend Nix was very much a part of it. Reina also plays a huge role in the power plays in this book
This story starts on the troubles streets of Strawberry Mansions and how two young men refused to let their upbringings define who they were. They were going places whatever it took. To say they did anything to make there lives better is an understatement. In amongst the chaos, there is a broken love story between Solomon and Reina and it's a beautiful one at that. I can't tell you why and how it was broken because where's the fun in that.
The Characters, yes all of them provided a fantastic story that just kept you hooked and wanting more destruction. Solomon was Bat Shit Crazy, you can't deny but he also had a little caring side but his early life made him change from a fragile boy whom just couldn't take any more of the kicks that life gave him.
This book is a huge recommend from me. Another contender for book of the year. But be warned it's not a book of sunshine and flowers.

5Stars Solomon King met Reina Wilde the day he turned seventeen and she was nearly fifteen, both similar but also very different at the same time. Quickly becoming 'friends', which is unusual seeing as Solomon doesn't really make friends! That is until she vanishes!
This is a fast-paced book and very easy to read, not because it's sunshine and rainbows-far from it- however, it's written extremely well. This is the first book by this author that I have read but I'm positive it won't be the last! He uses very emotive language that helps to give an extremely clear visual such as: 'embrace' situations and no 'regard' to what is happening and feeling 'livid'. WS Greer certainly takes his readers on a tumultuous emotional hurdy-gurdy.
A sarcastic wit is a tool used when Solomon reflects about his life. This author doesn't beat around the bush, he shoots straight from the hip with his words, expressions and descriptions. Readers are never in doubt of what is happening.
The underworld of crime starts to really heat up just as Reina reenters Solomon's life. Should he trust her? That's the big question! Reina is such a strong, gutsy character and hard not to like but then the same goes for Solomon who is super confident in his abilities and doesn't take any rubbish from anybody.
The best news is that this is only book 1, there will be more to follow!
This is the first book in the Love and Chaos series. This is also the first book I have read by this author, but it will not be my last. It has dark themes and a hot alpha bad boy that is the KING. I must admit though, in the beginning, it was a bit slow for me. I had a bit of a hard time engaging with it. Once I was finally engaged, it began to drag on a bit. It is told in two parts. Part one is the early years. I liked the concept and the people. The writing was good and I liked it fine. When I read the blurb I wanted to jump in head first. I was so excited to read it.
I like the characters they were intriguing to me. I felt drawn to them, though the pace was something that could have been changed. The two main people couldn’t be any more different but the same in a sense. Now this book picked up for me in part two. That's when things get really start to get going. I began to feel more vested in this book.
You get to meet Solomon and Reina and see the teen years, as I said and this is where she is the rich girl and he is the one from the wrong side of the tracks. He is the king, he knows it and so does everyone else. If you don’t know this already he teaches you. Boy did they hit it off right away. You feel the intense and instant attraction when they meet. Reina wants to be Reina and not what her parents want for her. Then after a bit, she is gone. When I mean gone we don’t hear from her for a while. I think that is what I missed, I mean having her there.
I liked their relationship along with Nix and Solomons connection as well. I could feel the chemistry between Reina and Solomon. Just so intense. Though not erotic or having sex in general. The connection is there though. That’s the enough to get the point across.
I may sound contradictory, though I am really not. I liked the book it was long and could have been shorter and still got everything you wanted.
If you like dark and gritty along with great attention to detail, with a long story you will like this book and I recommend it to you. As I said, in the beginning, I have never read this author but I truly would like to read more. I would like to see where that mind will go. Now with me stating that and liking Nix...ok liking Nix a lot, I would love to read about him. **hint hint**
“I’m a whole new breed of villain”, well never a truer word has been said because just wait until you try to get to grips with Solomon King. He has no limits, no restraint and no recourse. This is a man that learnt early on in life that life is tough and in order to survive it you have to not only be tough enough, but you also have to ensure that those around you understand just what you are willing to undertake in order to cement your standing…there was nothing that Solomon wouldn’t do and that made him dangerous to everyone!
Reina is everything that Solomon isn’t, as youngsters they should have never been in the position to form a bond, but they did, two kids from opposite sides of the tracks leaning on each other, both desperate to escape lives that neither of the want but for totally opposite reasons. Reina had an issue with the expectations that her parents had for her, while Solomon had parents that barely acknowledged is existence let alone expectations!
But will the bond of their early years at Strawberry Mansions, be one that lasts a lifetime, or will the passage of time ravage a friendship that could possibly save them both? As you can imagine, only time would tell.
But could “King” Solomon rule the empire he has at his feet without a “Queen” by his side?
The connection between the two them was well developed, I thought the author gave just enough for me to understand what was going on for the two of them, but there were twists that when they came to the fore I hadn’t actually expected, and I thought that the author was selective with the amount of quality time given to the secondary characters but that with the important ones, like Nix he didn’t let me down.
Solomon was certainly one of a kind, a tough as they come guy that owns the skin he wears with pride and makes darn sure that everyone around him knows it…this is a man not to be taken lightly and with just cause.
I enjoyed WS Greer's detective story, Red Snow so when I saw this I decided to give it a go. Madman is the character driven, detail laden story of the rise of Solomon King. Solomon started as a street kid with a junkie mother who had the drive, brains, and reckless crazy to rise to the top of Philly's underworld. With his best friend Nix, Solomon steals, cheats and intimidates himself out of the slums of Strawberry Mansion.
Mr. Greer is exceptional at building a character from the ground up. Solomon is written in such vivid colors that the reader can easily "see" him. He is an angry young man who has buried any true feelings so deep under layers of uncaring ice that he cannot even admit to himself that he has a friend in Nix. Reina, at fifteen, is a rich girl balking at the oppressive control of her parents and comes across as a spoiled child looking to rebel. She wants to be bad and finds an outlet in Solomon. Nix is the only side character that has any substance but it is surface at best.
While there is some romance between Solomon and Reina it is fleeting as she disappears from the story early on. The focus is on Solomon's journey out of the hell of his childhood and his rise to power. The story is well written without a lot of violence, almost zero foul language, and little sexual situations. Reina reappears after the midway mark which opens up another plotline. Since this is Love & Chaos #1 and the story is left open ended, I'm going to assume that Solomon's story is not yet complete.
A good read if you are in the mood for an underworld / mob story this would be one to grab.
After reading the story and enjoying it I of course go to write a review and read what others have to say... I do agree on a few things - I did feel like it was a long story BUT that is only because we are set up to invest in Solomon and Reina so when they are apart and Solomon is doing his thing you kind of hang on just because you want Reina , like where is she what happened and when will she come back. I wouldn't say it was boring BUT I was already so invested in them as a couple that I was kind of bummed for them to grow through those important years apart. Regardless how can you not love a bad boy book like this !! Solomon was born into poverty and his mother was a disgusting piece of work. His best friend Nix was by his side from the start and I loved their connection. Reina was the girl from the good part of town , why was she so intrigued with Solomon and why was she always slumming when her life was filled with riches and no worries. We don't get too much info about her BUT what we do know is that despite living in the lap of luxury she too has crappy parents and wants so badly to escape. From innocent thoughts of crime to building a name for himself we go on the journey with Solomon and Nix. Despite his hurt over losing Reina he becomes a force to be reckon with and now as an adult he is running the show with the exception of one family. Much to his surprise it is that very family that brings someone back to him and leaves us worried that he may not be able to achieve his dreams because he is distracted. It does end leaving you wanting more and YES we do get more !!
This is the story of Soloman King, a boy from the wrong side of the tracks, with a drug addict for a mother and a terrible childhood. His only happiness is a girl with a life completely opposite to his own...Reina - until she left. Fast Forward and now Soloman has made a name for himself, a different life and given up on love.
The story completely pulls you in, keeping you turning the pages to find out what will happen next and reading half of it with your mouth open and pulse racing in suspense! The attention to detail is so good that you feel as if you have jumped into the story, it consumes you.
The characters were written so perfectly, I wasn't sure at parts whether I liked Soloman or not, his character is so real and so raw but the chemistry between him and Reina was incredible.
Its been a while since I've read a book that completely and utterly sucked me in, to the point where it stayed with me even when I put it down. This book is one of the best novels I have ever had the pleasure of reading, and I already want to read it again (which I hardly ever do as there are too many good books out there and limited time to read them). I cannot wait for the next book in this series and will definitely be purchasing them all in paperback to sit and look pretty on my shelf which brings me to how gorgeous the cover is! Wow is all I can say!
A Total must read, If I could I would give it a hundred stars!
I really enjoyed reading this book. It's my first from this Author and I'm definitely looking into his other books.
This story builds up really slowly setting the scene for what's a thoroughly engrossing read.
Solomon King a young boy brought up in poverty and living with his drug addicted mother in the slums of Strawberry Mansion. His life is tough and he's has to struggle to get by.
Having such a rough start made Solomon grow up fast he looked out for himself anyway he could. His life has hardened him and he's now a brutal force of nature that takes no prisoners. No ones messes with him and gets away with it.
Solomon only had one friend growing up, Nix a boy with similar upbringing to his own. These two stick together and trust one another to have each others backs. I loved the friendship these two have.
Then Reina comes into Solomon's life she's a breath of fresh air for him. She's the complete opposite coming from a wealthy family she's never struggled like him. Reina has her own problems with her home life and finds comfort with Solomon.
These two have an unbreakable bond that lasts over the years, things happen but their love never waivers. Together they want to Rule as King and Queen and nothing will stand between them.
A great read I'm excited for more. I'm hoping Nix gets his book eventually because I really liked him in this book.
Move over Bonnie and Clyde, Solomon and Reina have taken your crown. They wear it well. Madman was beyond amazing. It was beyond incredible. I have no words for how great this story is. Solomon is truly a madman. He's a madman I want though. He's dark, hard, ruthless, psycho, and I love him so hard. Everything about this book demands your attention. I love how W.S. Greer set up the book. Each part of this story has a different view on how Solomon, Reina, and Nix grew up. The first part they were teens in love. She's rich and he's poor. Both hate the world's they come from and both want to change that. They team up to do just that. After making some success Reina disappears. Without a trace.
The next part it's seven years later and Solomon has done what he's set out to do. become King. He's feared, he's respected, he's King. After some problems with the local mafia things become interesting, especially when Reina shows back up after seven years.
I don't want to say too much because honestly you need to experience this story yourself. The writing was beyond impeccable. The characters dark and gritty. Basically, every single thing I love about dark romances. He's the villian. He sets out to make sure everyone knows this. Madman will sweep you away into a dark and ruthless world where you work for every single thing, whether that work is legal or not.
Wow what a book and my first by this author. I will warn you it's a long book separated into three parts looking at different times in the main characters life from a teenager up to the feared man he becomes.
Solomon has been through a lot in his life with a crack head for a mom and just not being looked after at all. He strike's up a friendship with Nix who I love in this book and really hope he gets a book of his own. They rule the deadbeat of a town they live in and people fear them even as teenagers. So when then meet Reina a girl from the better part of town who has rich parents but hates her life too so when Reina and Solomon meet they see something each other. When she all of a sudden leaves with no word or call or txt from her in seven years Solomon has to move on and forget about Reina.
Cut to seven years later and Solomon is all grown up with Nix by his side running the city together so when they get involved in a fight with the mob who also claim the city as there's all hell breaks loose. When Reina shows back up in his life in the way that is unexpected to him he wants her back. How far will Solomon go in his quest to fight the mob and take back his city? Is Reina playing Solomon and the mob off against each other?
This is a cracker of a read and one I enjoyed very much.
OMG!!
This story starts on the troubles streets of Strawberry Mansions and how two young men refused to let there up bringings define who they were. They were going places what ever it took. To say they did anything to make there lives better is an understatement. In amongst the chaos there is a broken love story between Solomon and Reina and it's a beautiful one at that. I can't tell you why and how it was broken because where's the fun in that.
The Characters, yes all of them provided a fantastic story that just kept you hooked and wanting more destruction. Solomon was Bat Shit Crazy, you can't deny but he also had a little caring side but his early life made him change from a fragile boy whom just couldn't take anymore of the kicks that life gave him.
This book is a huge recommend from me. Another contender for book of the year. But be warmed it's not a book of sunshine and flowers
Solomon King is young man living a poor neighborhood in Philadelphia with a junkie mother and this is the story of his rise as a powerful underworld boss. Early on he meets Reina Wilde, a rich girl who ends up in his side of the city running away of a life she doesn’t want to conform to. Solomon and Reina befriend each other while understanding the similarities of their circumstances, but when she suddenly disappears, he’ll focus his energy on moving on in the world until she comes back into his life years later when he’s about to start a gang war. This was my first read by the author and, though I found most of the story intense, extremely detailed and somewhat entertaining, I felt some elements rather farfetched and I wasn’t completely sold on it. I had mixed feelings about Solomon and I honestly liked the characters better when they were teenagers than their grown up versions, especially Reina. I could not relate to her grown up persona even after knowing all that had happened during their time apart. Madman is still an interesting view on the evolution of a criminal, but it didn’t meet my expectations.
3 stars *Received an ARC for which I voluntarily provided an honest review*
Solomon didn't have an easy childhood, as he grew up with a junkie mother, so by the time he was 17, he was taking care of himself by fighting & robbing people, in order to eat and protect himself. He had one friend he trusted, Nix, but met a girl named Reina, who was from the right side of the tracks if you will. He grew up to be a King in the mafia, where he met up with Reina again years later. And that's all that I'm giving up. I've been trying to figure out how to write this review, as I am conflicted about this interesting story. For a lot of this story I couldn't turn the pages quickly enough, but there came a point where it dragged for me, and remember that this is only my opinion, and then it picked back up. And while I really liked seeing why Solomon was like he was, I had a hard time really imprinting on him later on, and I wanted more of Reina as well. However, W.S. Greer's talented writing style did capture my attention enough that I'm very interested in seeing how this story continues to play out, since I do believe that he laid the groundwork for something big. So, I cannot wait for the next book to come out, and HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
