Book Title: The Adventures of Princess Firecracker and Sir Hye Oye Book Authors: Renee Lake Illustrator: Katie Vance Source: Received an ARC copy from the author for an honest review. Rating: 5 stars
This is a great children’s book! It is about 30 pages long with illustrations! Perfect for kids because kids love illustrations. The illustrations are cute and help the story.
Princess Firecracker turned 12 years old, which is a big deal for her family because now she has to prove herself as a worthy princess. She takes her trusty companion (a talking cat) by the name of Sir Hye Oye on her quest set by her parents. I love it when there are talking cats, especially if they act like Sir did in the story.
I liked the names of the places. Really imaginative and perfect for the middle grade genre. It was fun reading about the small interactions between the people and the princess.
A young princess is set a challenge by her parents.
I thought this was an engaging short fable - it reminded me of 'The Little Prince'. The characters and central moral theme of the story were strong and even though it was short (around 5,500 words) it was still thought provoking.
My 4 star rating is based on the illustrations (which besides the cover didn't grab me) and the limited development of the characters and plot (the flipside of the short punchy nature of the book, which was one of its strengths).
Definitely worth a look if you enjoy short fables or want a story read to / with a young child.
My first children's (middle grade fiction) novel to be released October 25th 2016. In print and e-book from Kindle, amazon and smashwords.
This was written for my eldest daughter as a birthday present when she turned 12. The original version (there have been MANY changes) was published on my blog.
There is currently a giveaway and I will be giving .pdf copies to any of my fellow review/bloggers if you would like to contact me via here or @ damianarose777@gmail.com
The cover art is shutter stock since my best friend and illustrator Katie Vance does not draw people, however all inside art is the product of her imagination.
