For Maggie's Sake is a second chance romance full of hot SEAL's and a tough heroine. This story didn't honestly feel like second chance type since Maggie and Joe had such an intense chemistry that it was like they never spent a day apart. I loved that they had such a connection and that they didn't let their past stop them from having a future.
Lora Leigh somehow packed this short story full of sexiness that is well worth you reading this story. If I could only pick one reason to recommend reading this, it would be the heat that was between these characters.
'For Maggie's Sake' by Lora Leigh is the story of Maggie and Joe. This is a Novella which has about 100 pages that sets us up for a second chance at love story. Joe had once been married but his wife cheated on him and actually died with her boyfriend. So Joe had trust and commitment issue after that. So a few years later he and Maggie start a relationship but it ends due to that issue. Maggie meets Grant who used to be Joe's friend. Grant and Maggie marry but things don't go so well and Grant is killed. Not but a few days after his death she is called in and found that Grant was not what he seem. In addition Maggie is now being set up where the detectives think she was a part of his crime. But Joe shows up to take charge of the situation and to find out the truth of what is going on. Will this also give them a second chance to find their happy ending? "My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read."
This would have been a 5 star for me except I'm a bit confused if there is a book before this one. It starts off as if it's in the middle of a story but I can't seem to find another book that would have preceded this.
Despite jumping right in, you learn real quick what's going on and like Lora Leigh can do, she pulled me right into the story. What I love about this book is the passion she conveys in her main characters. There is no doubt about the strong pull Joe and Maggie have and you can feel the intensity with each written word. It feels like they are on a hair trigger and will explode at any moment if they can't be with one another.
The race to find evidence against the mafia to clear Maggie's name and put these dangerous men behind bars before they kill her, just adds to the intensity of the story. Even though this started as if in the middle of the story, there is a conclusion at the end and a sweet epilogue. ARC provided by NetGalley.
Realmente lo he disfrutado.
3.75 starsFOR MAGGIE’S SAKE by Lora Leigh is a stand alone novella of romantic suspense originally released in the anthologies Real Men Do It Better, and Taken. FOR MAGGIE’S SAKE is loosely connection to Lora Leigh’s TEMPTING SEALS series. Clint McIntyre plays a supporting role in the current story line.
NOTE: There is some discrepancy and inconsistencies in the Goodreads blurb as it pertains to the current novella premise.
Told from dual third person perspectives-Maggie Samuels, and DEA agent Joe Merino- FOR MAGGIE’S SAKE follows Joe and Maggie’s rekindling romance when our heroine is taken into protective custody following the death of her estranged husband –a police detective working the wrong side of the law. The DEA suspect Maggie of being in collusion with a dangerous drug cartel, and Joe Merino is willing to do anything to prove Maggie is innocent of the crimes. What ensues is the rebuilding of trust and the reigniting of a love between two people who have never stopped loving one another.
Two years earlier, Maggie and Joe were lovers but a perceived betrayal found Maggie walking away, and into the arms of a man who hid his true deception and connection to Joe Merino. In the ensuing time Maggie’s husband grew more distant and angry, while Joe Merino watched from the sidelines as the woman he loved walked out of his life. Fast forward to present day, and our heroine has been implicated in a series of Cartel crimes that Joe Merino is hoping to prove wrong.
FOR MAGGIE’S SAKE is a very quick read; a story of romance and suspense; of one man’s struggle to keep his distance from the woman he loves; and one woman’s need to prove she is innocent of the charges brought about by the DEA. The $ex scenes are intimate and intense-Lora Leigh likes the use of the word ‘spurt’ and FOR MAGGIE’S SAKE is no exception. The sexual tension is palpable and strong. The premise is entertaining; the characters are broken and heartbreaking; the romance is a second chance at a happily ever after for two people destroyed by betrayal and lies.
This is a good book. Has a lot of sex and some very tense situations.
When Maggie is brought into the police station and questioned about having ties to the Fuentes family and their new drug her ex, Joe, also a DEA agent, is watching from the observation room. It seems Maggie's husband, Grant, also a DEA agent has framed her pretty well and her life is now of being hunted with a price on her head.
Joe cannot believe his best friend, Grant, did this to Maggie and that he clearly didn't know him at all. Joe let Maggie walk away from him two and a half years ago and it was the worst mistake of his life. He has spent two years longing for her. Now he has to prove her guilty or innocent or at the very least her has to get her to remember where Grant may have hidden the info they need.
After a week in seclusion though everything is getting harder to deal with.
I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
FINAL DECISION: This is a very hot story about a second chance at love. The story has a lot of heat and some angst and drama as the main characters have to confront their past.
THE STORY: Maggie Samuels is a recent widow who is suspected of participating in the rape and drug crimes of her late husband. Joe Merino was Maggie's husband's best friend -- or at least he thought he was. It turned out he did not know his best friend at all. Maggie's husband held jealous feelings toward Joe and part of that was convincing Maggie to marry him after her breakup with Joe. Now Joe is determined to find out the truth about Maggie's involvement.
OPINION: This novella focuses intensely on Joe and Maggie which is good thing considering the length. Most of the story takes place with the two of them alone. I thought the sexual attraction between them worked and also I did feel their remaining problems were well resolved here.
The story was short and uncomplicated and was resolved as might be expected, but in a short novella that is a good thing. The focus is on the relationship between Joe and Maggie. My only slight disappointment is that things are really quickly resolved between them as to the past. Most of the story is about the lingering mistrust that Maggie feels.
I really enjoy these two characters and their journey together. This novella was good enough that I'd really like to read more of the series because I liked the characters.
WORTH MENTIONING: FOR MAGGIE'S SAKE was previously published in the REAL MEN DO IT BETTER anthology.
CONNECTED BOOKS: FOR MAGGIE'S SAKE is the third book in the Tempting SEALS series. This book can be read as a standalone even though it clearly refers to events in other books. I haven't read any of the rest of the series but I understood and enjoyed this novella.
For Maggie's Sake by Lora Leigh 4 stars Triggers: Sex trafficking, abuse I was given this book for an honest review by Wicked Reads.
This was a heavy story. Despite it's short length, a lot happens right away and keeps happening throughout the story. Leigh is able to draw you in because she also gives you background on the characters, so that you don't feel that you're missing things.
Joe is kind of hard at the beginning, but you learn it's because he blew his chance to be with Maggie. He was unwilling and/or unable to show his affection, having been burned by a previous relationship.
Maggie has been living a nightmare for years. She had to leave Joe behind when she realized that he was unwilling to give her the kind of life she wanted - needed. Instead, she thought she fell in love with his best friend only to realize that her now husband, was not the man she thought.
This is a fast paced story of deceit and second chances. There is immense chemistry between Maggie and Joe and the "mystery" behind the story is actually in the background.
As I was reading For Maggie's Sake something was weird about this story. At first I couldn't put my finger on it. I just kept having a deja vu moment. Finally I couldn't take it any more and had to find out why I felt like I've read this story before.
Well it turned out that I had read this story before. It was in a anthology called, Real Men Do It Better back in 2007. Since I liked the story and I was already close to the midway point I continued to read it.
I have to say that I once again enjoyed it. Leigh is very good at writing very dominate male characters. But they are also very loving. A mixed bag to say the least.
A ton of action is back in the novella. You won't be able to put the story down until your sure everyone is safe and sound.
Short, sexy and suspenseful! This one has a lot packed into a short amount of pages. Maggie Chavez is still being interrogated over things her dead husband was involved in. They are convinced that Maggie knows more then she is giving them. Making things worse, the DEA agent on the case is her ex-lover Joe Merino. Knowing that she could be in danger from the scum her husband was involved with she's put under protection with Joe as her guard. Resisting the blazing chemistry between them will be the hardest thing either has ever tried to do but if she's ever going to get her life back they need to stay focused. Can they do it??
copy received courtesy of Netgalley short yet intense. Maggie and Joe share a past. they were in love but Maggie wanted more. Joe's insecurities and hangups cause unnecessary pain. She runs straight in to the arms of his ex friend. But she quickly finds out that the grass is not greener on the other side. Now she finds herself in a dangerous predicament. Her ex, Grant was not who she thought, now Maggie is caught in a dangerous situation. Joe steps in to find out the truth. He has to work around the desire his feelings for Maggie to find it. The story is intense and sexy.
I've read the anthology that this book is from, but didn't remember it. I felt sorry for Maggie and the situation she was in. Worse when her history was revealed. It seemed like Joe was using Maggie, that he didn't really care for her. Still not sure that I feel that way after reading the whole thing.
https://labibliotecadellibraio.blogsp...
An intense, hot and steamy novella with added suspense…
This novella was previously published in two anthologies: “Real Men Do It Better” and “Taken”.
DEA Agent Joe Merino watches as his former lover is interrogated for involvement with a notorious drug cartel. Her husband, also DEA and now deceased, left a journal implicating her in his actions. After hours of being grilled she continues to plead innocence and ignorance of her husband’s dealings. The woman Joe once knew would never have been a part of what she’s accused but time can change a person and she did marry his best friend who turned out to be a man who betrayed the agency and him. Word is out that she knows where evidence is that could destroy the cartel and whether innocent or guilty there’s a contract out on her life.
Though things didn’t end well between them years ago, being near Maggie still makes Joe’s blood burn, she’s haunted his nights for over two years. She’ll be in his protective custody because of their previous relationship and he’ll use his knowledge of her to decide on her innocence and if not consciously she has to have seen or heard something.
Running from the man she was deeply in love with years ago to protect her heart because her lover couldn’t give her what she needed in their relationship, Maggie Samuels ran into the arms of his best friend and within six months they married. It didn’t take long to realize the magnitude of the mistake she’d made, her marriage was a horror she had no way of escaping. His death should have meant her freedom but her husband’s twisted nature implicated her in the drugging and rape of many women.
Joe knew her better than anyone, he would know she didn’t do this but though she asked for him at the precinct he didn’t immediately respond and when he did his abrupt coldness was evident, he doesn’t believe her and a drug lord wants her dead. Can she convince him? Does he still feel for her what she does for him? Or will he use her to get the information the authorities seek?
Place two people with a strong sexual chemistry and a deep emotional connection that had been betrayed in a closed environment and you have an explosive combination and severe tests of their control. Mistakes were made on both sides by them in the past that clouds their present judgement, their forced close proximity now will either save them or kill them. This was an intense hot and steamy read with the suspense of being hunted to keep things exciting but it was predominantly a psychological piece, two souls in pain making peace with the past while surviving the dangers of the present.
An advanced reading copy was obtained from the publisher via NetGalley.
I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads, so here is my review. 3.5 Stars This story starts out with DEA agent Joe Merino watching the woman he lost being questioned about her husbands involvement with the drug cartel and Grant's journal tells about Maggie's involvements. But Joe knows that Maggie couldn't be involved. Grant wasn't who everyone thought he was. Being a fellow DEA agent himself, they can't believe he lied to them about everything. Maggie can't believe she is being accused of the things they are saying. She would never do those things. When Joe takes her away to keep her safe, she wonders if he believes her or does he believe Grant's lies? Can Joe help Maggie remember anything that she might have overheard Grant talk about with the drug lords that would help to bring the bad guys to justice? Will Joe make her see that his feelings for her are real and he never meant to hurt her? He was only doing his job. Will Maggie give in to her feelings for Joe without losing her heart? This is a really quick suspenseful story and I enjoyed it. This is a first for me from Lora Leigh and I look forward to reading more from her.
When I was offered the opportunity to read this book, I thought it was a totally new story. When it is Ms. Leigh and there are military men involved, I want to read it. To my chagrin, this is story from an anthology I've read previously. I did not enjoy this story the first time around and the second time was still lackluster.
I am a huge fan of Ms. Leigh. This one felt contrived and forced. Usually her characters are flawed yet admirable. Usually they are not too stupid to live. Maggie specifically is a TSTL character. She is taken for a ride by her husband. Now, dead husband. How she never connects that her husband's best friend was her former lover she never really got over, I will never understand. The set up of this story is off and not one of the best from Ms. Leigh. The pace is slow at times yet the plot feels rushed. It all felt a little off kilter for me which is unexpected from Ms. Leigh.
Whilst Joe still comes across as a tortured lover who let the "one" slip through his fingers, Maggie is still clueless. It is surprising Maggie isn't dead with how oblivious she is to her life. Since I tend to enjoy stories if I like a character, this one ended up as okay for me. I could not get into the story because I could not get over Maggie. This short erotica is recommended to romance reader who like lovers reunited themes.
~~I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads ~~
From the very beginning, when the tension and the distrust levels are high, to dramatic resolution of the mystery, the reader is kept guessing as to just what will happen next.
Joe has to work through some seriously conflicting emotions, and Maggie has to both believe that she is trusted and can trust him. All of which leads to some very intense scenes. Once the inevitable happens, given their history we have no doubts as to the level of intensity that they bring out in each other.
For a fairly short story, this packs all the usual punch of a Ms Leigh novel.
I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads.
Lora Leigh does sex and romance while weaving danger and intrigue like no one else. This novella delivers on all fronts.
Joe and Maggie had their chance at love several years ago, but Maggie walked away when she believed that Joe couldn't give her the life she wanted. Heartbroken and miserable and wanting to move on, she began dating Grant, who happened to be Joe's best friend, only she didn't know it until her rehearsal dinner.
During the course of the story, we learn that Maggie's marriage was anything but ideal and truly the learn the misery both Joe and Maggie suffered during that time.
A lot of story was packed into this novella and it didn't miss a beat.
When Maggie moved on from Joe, she thought she found the perfect man. Until she married him. Then all secrets were revealed. Her late husband was the best friend of Joe. Then if that wasn’t bad enough her late husband was also in the bed of the Mafia. Worst yet is when her late husband died, he had everyone believe that Maggie knew everything about his dirty dealings. Joe, was the only one who believes that Maggie is innocent and now it’s up to him to prove it.
For Maggie Sake is a second chance at love novella. With well-developed characters and steam from every page. Lora Leigh know how to captivate an audience from the first words and never let you go until the characters has spoken their last words.
This was a steamy novella featuring a second chance romance. Although initially I felt as though I missed a part of the story, the story grabbed my interest almost immediately. Maggie is under suspicion as being part of her dead husband's crimes. While Joe, her ex-boyfriend is assigned to get the truth out of her and/or protect her if she is innocent. Fast paced, with plenty of romance, this was a great afternoon read.
Ci rimani male, ecco!!!!
Insomma c’è poco materiale, pure poco originale e mi sento compressa in queste poche pagine.
For Maggie's Sake by Lora Leigh is a great short story to read. Maggie has been through the ringer which you find out why as soon as you start in the first chapter. I like how Lora gives you a back story on her characters so that as a reader you feel like you have met them before. Joe is an ex Navy Seal, and Maggie's ex lover. She needed something more, something steady. She already fell for Joe, but he was not ready. So he leads her to believe he was with someone else. Before you know it Maggie is married to Joe's best friend. Yes this story throws you in for a loop. And you will enjoy it.
Yes this story has a lot of drama and suspense. Lora Leigh will keep you on your toes with this book. The passion that Joe and Maggie had for each other is electrifying. Even after years being apart, is it still there? Joe suspect Maggie may have been involved in something illegal, but his heart say otherwise. The sexy scenes Lora gives in detail make you melt. I love passion and when it is described like in this story, you can feel the emotions in her characters. Lora Leigh is amazing with her writing and I am always coming back for more!
*I received an ARC copy by Netgalley in return for my honest review*
the description of this novella was clearly written by someone who has NEVER read the novella itself. "He intends to seduce her and get the information before she can sell it back to the drug cartel. But the desire crackles between them and their attraction is undeniable." > no, he really doesn't intent to seduce her - he did his best to NOT touch her - it was HER who initiated the first contact and made the first move!
Anywho, Joe and Maggie are past lovers who broke up due to a misunderstanding. She went on to date and marry Joe's best friend (she didn't know husband was Joe's best friend until the wedding!) Husband ended up being a psycho and a criminal, to everyone's surprise. Husband got killed. Joe is back, investigating criminal-ex-best-friend and looking for some evidence, which the police believe Maggie has. Joe believes that Maggie doesn't know about the evidence, but together they are looking for it and he is trying to protect her from other criminals who are also looking for this incriminating evidence... Old flames reignite. Cute - i liked it. I like second chance romance stories... and this one was pretty steamy ...
Lora Leigh came through once again with an incredibly sexy and intense story.
Joe and Maggie had a hot fling in the past. It ended in a misunderstanding that led to Maggie getting married to Joe's shady friend. This short story picks up two years later after her dead husband's double dealing left a very disillusioned Maggie stuck in a world of trouble. Now, Joe has to save her and try to rekindle their brief but hot love affair.
This book was so hot and Joe and Maggie had an intense chemistry. Like every Lora Leigh book the sex was scorching hot and the suspense was great too. Joe was suspicious of Maggie and it took him a minute to figure out if she was telling the truth. This led to some tense moments. And of course he had already made that one big mistake that really started the ball rolling downhill. So he had to earn back her trust and quite rightly she made him work hard for it. It was classic Lora Leigh at her finest.
I enjoyed reading this book and can't wait for whatever comes next from this amazing author.
This is a second chance story. The trope can be hit or miss for me, depending on the circumstances. However, this one was solid. Maggie and Joe cared for one another but were not where they needed to be their first go around. They both made mistakes but life places Maggie in Joe's path again. While trying to protect her and unraveling a mystery surrounding someone close to her, Joe realizes what he's been missing. The plot was interesting. The writing was well done and includes some very very hot love scenes. The characters were developed well and experienced growth. They shared moments of tenderness, frustration, passion, hurt, humor and more. This is exactly the kind of story I've come to expect from the author and a credit to her collection. Safety: No rape but definitely the threat of it. Yes to abuse. No other women for the hero, even through their separation. One other man for the heroine, whom she married during her separation from the hero. He is no longer in the picture.
D:) XD
