Nightstruck #2

Night Magic

Rate this book
Jenna Black returns to the quarantined city of Philadelphia, where an unsuspecting seventeen-year-old has unknowingly unleashed a dark power that transforms the city into a monstrous hellscape in Night Magic.

Philadelphia is locked in the grip of an evil magic that transforms its streets into a nightmare landscape the minute the sun sets each night. While most of the city hunkers down and hopes to survive the long winter nights, Becket Walker is roaming the darkened streets having the time of her life.

Once, the guilt of having inadvertently let the night magic into the city―and of having killed her onetime best friend―had threatened to destroy her. But now she’s been Nightstruck, and all her grief and guilt and terror have been swept away―along with her conscience. So what if she’s lost her friends, her family, and her home? And so what if her hot new boyfriend is super-controlling and downright malevolent?

Mesmerized by the power and freedom of not having to care about anyone but herself, Becket is sinking ever deeper into the night magic’s grasp. But those who love her refuse to give up on her―even if she’s given up on them. If they can’t find a way to help Becket break the night magic’s hold, the entire city might soon find itself shrouded in perpetual night. But the last thing Becket wants is to be “rescued” from her brand new life, and she will fight tooth and claw to stay exactly where she is.

Jenna Black is your typical writer. Which means she's an "experience junkie." She got her BA in physical anthropology and French from Duke University.

Once upon a time, she dreamed she would be the next Jane Goodall, camping in the bush making fabulous discoveries about primate behavior. Then, during her senior year at Duke, she did some actual research in the field and made this shocking discovery: primates spend something like 80% of their time doing such exciting things as sleeping and eating.

Concluding that this discovery was her life's work in the field of primatology, she then moved on to such varied pastimes as grooming dogs and writing technical documentation. She writes paranormal romance for Tor and urban fantasy for Bantam Dell.

Becket is back but this time she's Nightstruck and no longer is carrying around the guilt of bringing the night magic into Philadelphia. Instead she is running around with Aleric, not a care in the world, and selfishly trying to make this new life easier. She causes further damage to the city and her relationships but her loved ones won't give up on her. She knows she doesn't want to be "saved". But she knows Aleric doesn't have the hold on her that he does on the rest of the Nightstruck. So where does this leave her? She doesn't feel like she quite belongs in either world.

As an avid horror fan, I can see how some might feel this isn't scary at all. However, I don't think YA books in this genre typically SCARE, but the horror elements are there. A paranormal evil man who was the start to the night magic, a city that comes to life at night - statues come to life in a truly horrific way, benches become mouths that feed on flesh and lamp posts become head posts, etc. etc.. I love this other world! I definitely prefer Nightstruck Becket, but I do find her a bit annoying either way to be honest. I also did find the book to be somewhat predictable and has your typical YA elements. However.... something about this book and this world Jenna Black has created has completely drawn me in. I like where the series is going and I'm so curious as to where the next book will lead to. I don't see many YA books in the horror genre that pull me in the way that this series has. A fantastic two books into an extremely promising series. I give it a full 5 stars because as soon as I turned the last page, I wanted to know more. If you like YA and you like paranormal horror in the lighter sense, I recommend giving this series a chance!
If you had the chance to live in a world where you never felt guilt, remorse or grief and gave into your basic instincts (basically becoming your ID), would you?

Eh. 2.5 stars. It wasn’t bad. It was very readable but it was so unbelievably slow. Nothing happened.

At the end of the first book Beckett had been Nighstruck. In this one I was finally looking forward to getting some answers and this answered none of them. (Where to the nightstruck go during the day? - dunno, what are the Night Makers? - (basically a “night” light). The nightmakers sounded so cool in the first book and the reality is they are super boring.

Most of the book is Beckett’ whiny introspection. Oh woe is me.

Overall I was bored, but it is quick and easy to read.

*Thoughts*

Jenna Black's Night Magic is the second installment in the authors Nightstruck series. 17-year old Becket Walker has been tricked into opening a door between worlds, allowing a dark magic into the mortal world. As the magic trickled in, the city began to change at night. Strange creatures roam the streets, inanimate objects come to life, such as potholes turning into toothy mouths and wires turning into strangling vines, all of them bloodthirsty and terrifying.

I read a lot of horror books mostly adult as I like to get scared. Even though this book didn't scare me I did enjoy it. It has some crazy elements to it and is on the lighter side of horror but it is YA. I got pulled into this crazy world and I am excited to see where this series goes next. I highly recommend this book to any horror fan. 4/5 Bloody Fangs

'Night Magic' is the mesmerizing second novel in a thrilling YA fantasy series that readers are going to want to pick up. I'll say right off that you're going to want to read the first book before this one, or you'll be pretty lost and might miss out on some fantastic details. Every aspect of this novel was incredibly well thought out and executed. The entire idea of night magic and the Nightstruck was fascinating, and I loved learning all I could about it. It's really unique and allows the series to stand out from others in the genre. I'm looking forward to learning even more in the next installment. The author uses wonderful attention to detail and vivid imagery to bring Becket's world to life for the reader right from the beginning. I easily slipped inside her world and didn't come back out until I had read the last word (which ended up being a few hours later since I couldn't put it down).

Becket is an interesting main character for the book and series. She keeps changing and growing throughout the story, and I liked watching her come into her own. She was realistic and easy to connect with - despite being Nightstruck. The author uses the first person writing style for the book, and I'm sure that played a big part in my identifying with Becket. She's the narrator of the story, so we get to really know her on a personal level during the novel. There's some romance woven into the plot, which I really liked. It didn't overshadow the main storyline though, which was a huge plus for me. I enjoyed watching Becket and her relationships with the secondary characters like Aleric and Luke change and grow. Overall, this was a wonderful sequel in an awesome series, and I can't wait to see what will happen in the next book. Very highly recommended!

Disclosure: I received a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

This review was originally posted on Bookish Things & MoreThis book was as gripping, if not more, than Nightstruck. I was engrossed in this book from the very beginning. It picks up right where Nightstruck left off. Becket is adjusting to her new nightly routine. But she isn't like the others that have succumbed to the darkness. I loved seeing the dynamic between her, Luke, Aleric, and a few others. She has to find her way, and get used to the fact that she has a darkness inside her.

Beckett has to figure out a way to stop the Nightstruck, but learns she can't do it all on her own. The scenes in this sequel are just as creepy. I definitely did not want to go outside after finishing it.

After the way it ended, I'm curious if there is going to be a third. I hope so because I want to know what happens next.

Well, I'm done. I'm frustrated with this series because I love the entire idea here. From Becket's blood causing this to it having so much power. Everything that happens at night and the changes that occur in the darkness are just so damn awesome. And can't forget that I simply love Aleric. I really don't care that he's the twisted bad guy. But I HATE Becket, I HATE Luke, and I HATE this thing between the two of them.

I mostly enjoyed the beginning of the book. It was great to have more Aleric and to get more of everything nightstruck. Even though Becket was still a little annoying. She didn't change as much as everybody else at all. While she still feels like she would never want to go back to being normal, she doesn't exactly embrace this life either. Robbing, partying and watching people being killed doesn't bother her but at the same time she doesn't feel the desire to join in. Her and Aleric become a couple more or less with Aleric trying to get her to let go of her past life and become the queen he wants at his side. Together they even summon a night maker in order to create a space of darkness that doesn't disappear with the light. Unfortunately for Aleric, and for my entertainment, Becket just can't stop wanting Luke. She even is always going to his house in the middle of the night and when she brings the darkness to the day she sits at the border hoping to see and talk to him. Annoyed the hell out of me, but also Aleric. To the point he would send his creatures to keep an eye on her. Which only grated on Becket even more because Aleric hardly ever left her side at night.

When we got to about 100 pages, I was out when Luke, the ever present knight in shining armor, takes it upon himself to remove Becket from the darkness by force. And I ended up doing something with this book that I never do....I skimmed it. Taking Becket back into the day brings her back to her old self. From there there's a lot talking to Luke, to his mom, to Becket's mom, and to Piper. Some running around to avoid Aleric, which only last so long until finds her each time. I only really read any part that dealt with Aleric because, come on, he's the most important thing going on here. He wants Becket back badly, but not because he loves her or anything. He needs her in order to spread his darkness and is willing to do anything to get her to come back to him.

When Aleric captures Luke, Becket comes up with a stupid idea in hopes to get him back and for her to stay out of Aleric's hands. It fails wonderfully. Aleric had his own trap set that, while it didn't go quite as he planned, works out to his favor anyway. Until Becket does something and learns what could very well be his only weakness. And she's determined to use it to kill him.

Like I said, I'm done with this series. As much as I want to see more of Aleric, I don't like where this story is going (Why can't the bad guys EVER win??) and I am so over Becket and her immature thinking. More over, Aleric had it right when he called Luke a vanilla boy scout wanting to be a hero. I didn't like Luke the last book because he was too perfect, and this one made me dislike him more. I can't stand the "relationship" between him and Becket and don't want to read a single thing more about it. Too bad such an awesome world has more characters that I hate in it than I can deal with and a story that just ticks me off....

Review originally posted at RabidReads.ca.

I was excited to start this book. I really enjoyed the first book in this series. I really enjoyed this mixed up version of Philly that Jenna Black created. I’m not an avid read of YA fiction. I am a reader of horror (not as much I would probably like, but I’m reading more and more each year). I do love Jenna Black and I like her YA too. They tend to be a bit on the darker side and with this horror story that is there in spades.

So this story picks up where Nightstruck leaves off. The city of Philadelphia is under quarantine. Weird things are happening every night. People aren’t who they used to be when they are out at night. If people are out during the transition to dawn, they are turned into one of the Nightstruck. They lose pretty much all of their inhibitions. They see nothing wrong with beating people who can’t defend themselves, stealing or looting or having sex on any street corner. Other things happen during the nighttime hours too. Statues come alive and not exactly has they were when statues. Leo, a lion statue, has a main of snakes and a tail of scorpion. Fences change to other things, like tentacles. Once the sun comes up, everything goes back to normal.

It is hard to talk about this story without giving spoilers to the first story, but I will stick with cover things that are mentioned in the blurb. Beckett is Nightstruck. She is enjoying her time without the worries that the other people in the world deal with. She doesn’t mind that she walks out of a store with a full length fur coat (something she wouldn’t wear before she changed). She does some other things she would never have done before she was out at dawn. She isn’t like the other Nightstruck though.

I enjoyed this story, but not quite as much as the first installment of this series. I felt like the first part of the story was a little slow. I know exactly what Ms. Black was trying to do in showing us how Becket is while being a Nightstruck. It was good to see that side of the horror going on in Philly. That part of the story was a little on the slower side. The second half of the story was much more to my liking.

This story ended with several unanswered questions, like the first book. I know that I will be eagerly awaiting the next book in the series.

Leo continued to accompany us. He helped us get into the shops I wanted, then served as pack mule when I came out. If you’ve never seen the snakes in a metal lion’s mane carrying shopping bags, you’re missing out.

I’d expected to become a wholly different person when I was Nightstruck, but that wasn’t at all what seemed to have happened. As far as I could tell, I was the same old Becket, minus the guilt, the grief, and the insecurity. I might be angry with Aleric and concerned about where those missing hours of my life were going to, but I was still incredibly glad I’d finally given in. If I’d known then that I wouldn’t become some cackling sadist, I never
would have fought it so hard.

OMG! Jenna Black has done it again!! Night Magic is the second installment in this terror filled series! And it HAS to be a trilogy at least because OMG THAT ENDING!!!!

We pick things up nearly right where the left off, if you remember Philadelphia has been taken over by Night Magic. Every night once the sun goes down, shadows and monstrous things take over the city, leading the charge is the mysterious Aleric. It's not really clear on what he is, I'm suspecting a demon of some kind. Since Becket was tricked into being outside during the transition and her emotions were all over the place after having shot her best friend, after she had had her father killed, Becket became Nightstruck.

She and Aleric are basically having the time of their lives causing chaos and inciting terror. But it seems there's still a part of the old Becket in her. She doesn't always cater to Aleric's whims or bow to his will. She's no ordinary Nightstruck. It becomes clear when with Aleric's help they are able to create little pockets of eternal darkness in Philadelphia with the use of Becket's blood. Then Luke walks back into the picture and he's determined to bring Becket to the side of the light, literally!

I feel like in this one, we get a better understanding of the creepiness of the Nightstruck. Since we get Becket's point of view, it was rather interesting seeing her side of things since she's joined the enemy, however unwillingly. At times she realizes what she's doing is wrong, but the darkness that has basically taken her over, can't quite care. Even when trying to join the other Nightstruck with their merriment, she often finds herself going off on her own. And that's when she ends up going back to Luke for really awkward conversations. Lol.

Even though the book seems rather short at 288 pages, I must say, a LOT happens! Night Magic is one jammed pack kind of read! The first part I would say is a learning experience of the Nightstruck and then the second part is all about the action...because I won't get into those details because spoilers! Needless to say this was one rockin read!!!

The pacing to this one was incredible! I'll admit we do have some downtime moments, but they don't really drag down the story. Those moments help to enhance some great character development! And did I mention Luke is back?! Now I'm all for bad boys in books, but I am completely falling for the golden boy next door!

The ending to this one you guys...ooohhh deary me!! It's one heck of a gut-punching ending! If you thought the cliffhanger in Nightstruck was killer, just wait until you get a read of this one! If you're looking for that positively creepy read filled with amazingly real characters than I highly recommend this series!! It's a pure delight...and just a little bit of fright!

When I grab the first book in the Nightstruck series by Jenna Black I thought it was a duology. I had been wanting to read a previous series by Jenna but Nightstruck really called out to me, the story takes place in Philadelphia, has magic and all the really interesting parts take place at night. I mean if a description like that didn't call out to me then almost nothing would.

After reading it I realize it was sort of a soft horror book (which I don't read) but it was good a kept my interest. The MC, Beckett (love the name) is an interesting character, she has been on both sides and while she is a good person she is the proof that no one is exactly perfect and that being flawed is very human. Something that kinda annoyed me is that while Luke seems like he was a really good person he did have some ugly moments but then again he is a teenage boy and no one is perfect. Overall I did like Luke and I think that if he and Beckett could have had a decent chance, now things are in the air.

My favorite part is how the whole city changes when night falls, it does a complete one-eighty, I always felt that everything gets prettier at night, that anything can happen, it just seems special. It's interesting to see a perspective that things get uglier at night but still no less magical. The wild and macabre descriptions that Jenna gives just bring the story together and makes it more enjoyable.

I am dying, I've finished Night Magic, the second book in the Nightstruck series and now I don't know what to do with myself. The story was short but it was jam-packed with action, magic, and characters I have come to care about. I haven't read anything like it and I enjoyed very much.

The story wasn't very long and it was dark and macabre and I love that kind of thing. However, the whole time I kept wonder how Jenna was gonna wrap this up but when the big showdown came, it wrapped up pretty quickly and in a weird but not bad way but it ends on a major cliffhanger. It would suck if Night Magic was the last book that was gonna be published because the story is far from over and I have to know what happens. Here's to crossing-my-fingers and hoping that there is a third book that will be published.

Night Magic by Jenna Black is the sequel to Nightstruck. We continue the story with Becket in the still quarantined Philadelphia - after she unknowingly unleashed a darkness that transforms the city into a hell-like state. I was so excited to dive back into this creepy horror!

After Becket has become one of the Nighstruck, she is roaming the monstrous streets and having the time of her life. The rest of the city hunkers down and tries to survive the evil that transforms everything at night into a living nightmare. The guilt about her loved ones, that had originally been eating away at her, is completely gone. She has come to terms with having let this terror loose and with the leaving of her guilt, so also seems to lose her conscience. Consumed by the power and freedom of not having a care in the world, Becket continues to fall deeper into the darkness of Night Magic. Her friends and family refuse to give up on her, but will they be able to when she is fighting to keep herself exactly where she is?

I haven't really found a YA horror that was actually creepy or had true horror elements. Usually it's really watered down horror with predictable scares. Nightstruck and Night Magic have a really unique quality to them and how the city transforms is amazing. I loved the parts describing the city at night (both in Nightstruck and Night Magic) and how it transforms. While the scares weren't all that predictable, the movement of the plot was, but I still enjoyed it! I'm curious to see where the story continues and will definitely keep up with the series. If you want a lighter horror story with paranormal elements mixed in, then I would highly recommend this one to you! I was impressed that I liked the sequel just as much as the first book.

I give this 5/5 stars!

NightStruck left us with one painful cliffhanger.

Night Magic continues full throttle.

Becket fought with everything she had to stay away from the grasp of the night. After she was tricked, and stuck outside during transition, she became Nightstruck....and she was enjoying herself. No pain, no heartache, she doesn't know why she didn't become Knightstruck sooner. However, the guilt she had, is just under the surface, and she wonders how devoted she truly is to the night.

Aleric has made her his queen of sorts, giving her everything and keeping her happy. However, he has an alternate plan up his sleeve, to spread the night and take over.

However, people from her past seem to creep slowly back into her mind, and she can't help but worry about their safety.

Dark, menacing, and spellbinding, this second novel of the series never slips a fraction of an inch with twists and turns. Not only is Becket battling the evil in the night, she is also battling the internal torment she feels she is responsible for.

I have fallen deeply for this world that Jenna has created. The world she has created with the transformation of a city during the night is mesmerizing with creative imagination. I couldn't help but fall for the characters, having that love/hate feeling for me makes the characters so life like you can't help but feel their emotions. It really is a fast paced read, with never a dull moment in sight. I highly recommend this story if you want to tickle your imagination with dark magic.

The quarantine continues in Philadelphia as Nightstruck citizens and magical horrors plague the streets, destroying, looting and killing with abandon. Becket is now Nightstruck, having ended the previous book stuck outside at dawn. But she no longer cares about consequences as Nightstruck lack any conscience or guilt. Her former bitter enemy Aleric is her new best friend and the two become lovers. As she dives deeper into the Nightstruck madness, she realizes that she is different, less affected, and is now bored with her new existence. After an old friend pulls her physically back into the sunlight, she seems to recover herself and is guilt stricken over what she has done by letting more night magic into the city. She is desperate to keep herself free of the night and away from Aleric’s evil influence. Becket longs to save those few people she still cares about. Billed as a horror sequel, the story is listless with a weak and often whiny protagonist. With so little difference between lack-of-conscience-Nightstruck Becket and selfish-regular Becket, it is nearly impossible to empathize or care what happens to her. There is not much to the plot and the twists are very predictable. Due to this predictability, the book does not deliver any scare factor.

wow wow wow..... I don't even know where to start with all this. the first book was a little slow but this book was definitely fast. the action was jammed packed. Becket is amazing. Luke and Becket are the perfect team! oh and of course Bob. I really enjoyed everything about this book. the characters were so lifelike.

I contacted the author and she said that unfortunately her publishing company has dropped this series. I feel like that's ridiculous. maybe they should have done a better promoting job. I am very active in the book community and I only happened upon this book by chance at my local library.

I do so hope Jenna black takes a chance and self published the 3rd book from this series. the cliffhanger on the 2nd book is absolutely horrific. it leaves us with such a broken heart and so many questions unanswered. I do so hope she considers finding a way to release the 3rd book. I absolutely loved this series and I would really like to know how it would end.

After attempting to murder her best friend Becket is now one of the Nightstruck. Strangely Aleric's obsession did not seem to lessen, and in some ways it intensified. He wants her to summon something called Night Makers, that make it night all the time, thus increasing his territory and power. Luckily, Becket's almost boyfriend Luke is determined to save her no matter what.

So I thought this was a duology, I am a little disappointed to find out it isn't. That being said it reads like the middle book of a trilogy. The plot didn't move all that much until like the last 20 pages. That is when I figured out there must be another book. I was a bit unsatisfied that not a lot of explanation was given. Like, who is Aleric, where does he come from, what does he want, what exactly are the nightstruck and why make them? Hopefully that gets answered in the next book.

I'm a fairly slow reader (a book a month or so) but I managed to eat this book in 3 days. I did not read the first one and to be honest I only picked this one up from the library because there is a German shepherd on the cover. His name is Bob and I love the small moments he's in.
I don't want to give spoilers but I'm happy with Night Magic as a stand alone. it filled me in with enough detail so I don't feel the need to read the first one. and I enjoyed that it ended how I wanted it to end. but then there is a final chapter that sets up for a 3rd book.

being that I picked this book because of the german shepherd on the cover, I enjoyed it a lot and would recommend it to anyone who is a horror fan. it's not a King horror, gruesome, hack 'em up, but it's worth a read.

This series has been a lot of fun to read, I really hope that Black finishes the series. You can tell by the way this book ended that there should be at least one more book. I need to know what is going to happen with Becket, Luke, Piper and Aleric!

Let me tell you something. I picked an ARC of book one last year. I don't remember where I found it but man was that a find. I read that puppy in just a few hours and I wanted book two right then and there. So when I got the chance to read this one I about died!! DIED!!

This one picked up where book one left off and this time all bets are off. At the end of book, one poor Becket has been Nightstruck and just don't care anymore. I love that we got to see this side of the story. It really opens your eyes to how she's feeling now that she doesn't feel like she belongs in any world. She doesn't care about anything anymore and during this book she is having the time of her life.

This story was gripping, while Becket is running around with Aleric her family still won't give up on her. The world in this one is just as creepy as book one and I loved every minute of it. The author does an amazing job blending everyday objects into some creepy dark things that want to kill you!!

I won't say too much more as I don't want to give anything away. But this one if you're a fan of book one you will wonder if Becket's family can save her and will they ever get rid of the dark magic that takes over their world? I really cant wait for the next book I want more and this is another series that I say can never end!! Its not allowed!

I’m excited to be so in love with a “horror” series. The descriptive elements in the first book were still present here (although less so as so much world building had already been covered in book one). I’m envious of people who can read the two back to back (or in future just marathon the series) because the world can really suck you in and I just want Book three now. I may need to plan a reread.

I almost gave up on this one because the pace was pretty slow and not much happens in 280 pages. The reader gets too much of the protagonist's annoying inner monologue, and not nearly enough of the interesting horror-fantasy-action that made me pick up the second book. Give me more scary Philly.
