My Monster Boyfriend is an erotic comics anthology unlike any other.
220 pages of cute monsters boys. Robots, demons, aliens and spirits, with their human and not-so-human lovers, in ten incredible stories by comics' best and brightest.
Trotman is also the creator of the webcomics Lucas and Odessa, Sparkneedle, and Blikada, as well as the somewhat less serious Playing With Dolls. She lives in Chicago with her husband.
I really very much enjoyed this collection, and it's SO exactly marketed FOR ME, but my one criticism: no weird monstrous dicks. I'm sorry! I just! All the monster boyfriends just had normal-looking dicks! Some were bigger than most human dicks, but nothing was particularly alien or, you know, monstrous.
This is an anthology published by Iron Circus featuring human characters having intimate moments with monsters. Some of the creatures are well-known (such as vampires), others are incredibly original.
It's a total of 10 stories: 4 of them are F/M, 4 of them are M/M, 1 is a male!monster/transgender female human, and 1 is female human/agender creature.
I managed to snag a copy after pledging to the Kickstarter campaign for it. My best guess is that it'll be available for sale at Iron Circus' site sometime in the near future.
What I liked
+ Diversity
Like all of the books published by Iron Circus, there are POCs as protagonists in a lot of the stories. There are also a variety of body shapes as well.
It's neat to see people who we're told by advertisement/mainstream media aren't desirable actually having v. enthusiastic sex. That's a powerful message and one that's deffo worthy of \o/!
+ The majority of the stories
My feelings for the entire anthology are mostly positive. Out of the ten, my ultimate faves were "Nebula" (female human/agender creature) and "Spoilsport" (female human/male vampire). The first one because it did a great job on balancing the creepiness of the situation with some creative sex scenes.
The second one was a blast to read from beginning to end. I actual!squeed when I realized who wrote it. In addition, this story also took a well-known premise and reworked it into a surprising thing.
Then there were 5 other stories that I enjoyed a lot. A lot of them were sweet, some of them engaged my attention more because I cared for the characters. If I were to rate them individually, I'd rate them 3.5 stars.
+ So pretty!
All 222 pages are in colour. It looked amazing on my tablet and I can only imagine how gorgeous it must look on paper. Also, not two stories had the same style--which added to my thumbs up.
What I didn't like
- The other three stories.
One of them is because I was put off by the monster. The story is about a human character who makes a connection that grows into something more with a male harpy. The flow of the story was cool. However, whenever the human character was intimate with the harpy, it looked like the human character was having sex with a giant chicken. #SomuchNOPE
Then, there was one story where I didn't get who was the monster. It's also, perhaps, the one story in the whole anthology that has a sadder vibe than the rest. On the positive side, all of the characters in that story were POCs.
The third story was meh because it was too by-the-numbers. #Noonelikesgenericstuffreally
- No F/F stories
This was, to me, a missed opportunity. I mean, imagine a scary mermaid wooing a scuba diver or something. In a way, I'm v. surprised that there wasn't a story of this kind in the book. :(
TL;DR: This is another great comic book by Iron Circus that has almost everything anyone would want to see in this type of anthology. The majority of the stories were fun and sexy in an inclusive way. I do recommend it to anyone who wants to read porny comics that go beyond the expected stuff.
The Smut Peddlers is a series of erotic anthologies published by Iron Circus Comics. My Monster Boyfriend is an anthology with ten short stories in comics format, each featuring some sort of monster or fantasty creature in it. I got a copy of this book in the US when I traveled there last year because I wanted to try reading smutty and sexy comics. And this does deliver in terms of the smut. In spades. And beautifully illustrated in various artistic styles. Also has great rep in terms of diversity. So overall, I think it's good that a title like this exists. What kept me from loving entire thing was that I felt that the stories were too short in length and they weren't given the depth that I wanted. Still a fun and unique read if the description is something you fancy! My copy has already been passed around to other bookish friends who are enjoying it as a novelty kind of read. I would love for Iron Circus Comics to come out with standalone titles that would have stories that have more meat in their bones.
For the most part, I liked the art, and I loved that it was all in color.
I liked that most of the stories were not instalove. They were either established relationships or romances that took some time to develop.
I loved how uncommon and not-human so many of the monster boyfriends were! They were usually still humanoid, but, for some examples... There was a harpy who had a human torso and face, but bird legs and wings instead of arms. There was a salamander-looking dragon creature who had a more humanoid form but still had colorful skin and a sort of reptilian face. There was a gloopy cave creature with a glowing orb in his head. There was a gargoyle who was entirely stony, gray.
My one complaint is that, considering this was an anthology with ten stories, I would've enjoyed a little more variety and diversity. There were M/F and M/M couples. There was one trans woman. There were a few POC characters. There was no other LGBT+ rep that I could tell, no disabled characters that I could tell, and not much variety in relationship dynamic.
I had four favorites that stood out:
Clutch by Dechanique & Nechema Frier - This harpy had scary teeth, but everything else about him was adorable, even down to his facial expressions and body language! I also loved his whole design and how much fun the author had with the visuals. Their romance felt super believable with how it progressed and how much time they spent hunting together. I liked the art, the detailed backgrounds, and the earthy, muted colors. I liked everything about this one!
Lonesome Palace by B. Sabo & Leia Weathington - I liked the idea behind this story, and it seemed like there was enough passage of time for the character growth that happened and for the feelings to develop. The story was a little bittersweet, but also cute. The coolest thing though was the rubbery, salamander-looking dragon guy. The art was crisp, clear, and gorgeous, especially the dragon creatures!
Thirsty Work by Jess Fink - This one was just so cute! Also a believable romance with characters spending time together, taking care of each other, laughing and having fun together. Jess Fink is great at showing the tension and budding feelings in a romance. I also dug Kofi's monster form with horns and hooves. Nice art too, in a cartoony style that's conveys emotions really well without being exaggerated. Just a really cute, sexy, nice story!
Spoilsport by Gail Simon & Trudy Cooper - This story went with the comedy route, committed to the silliness, and succeeded. It was cute and funny, it made me chuckle, and it left me with a smile. I also enjoyed the art style, clear and easy to see, and just cartoony enough to suit the comedy aspect.
The feel of this anthology overall was cute. There was one sad story, one or two more on the serious side, but the rest were cute and made me smile. Overall a fun and sexy anthology full of monstrous[ly sexy] boyfriends!
A whole book full of monsters to enjoy. Fabulous art and interesting stories. All the styles and themes are different. Very enjoyable read that I will pick up again.
This was great. As a Smut Peddler publication, it is porn by women, for women. It does include quite a few stories of gay sex, but as a straight man myself, I want to note that if that bothers you so much, you should probably get over yourself. The stories are all great. Some are really fun, some are really sweet, all are really hot. The art is fantastic. All the artists involved are top-notch talents with really appealing stories. The writers are all excellent at what they do, as well, and help to imbue the characters with a lot of personality.
This is porn with personality, and it's wonderful and a delight and I definitely recommend it.
This has 10 short smutty comics in it. I like some of the comics a lot and some not so much and one even got me to cry. I think I like „Thirsty Work“ and „Clutch“ the most and while very simple I adore the art for „Nebula“ a lot. Thought all the Art is pretty amazing.
At the expense of mockery from my friends, I gotta say right off: ...This is hot, okay? If this seems on brand for you it is really, REALLY on brand for you. It just is. Know yourself.
THAT SAID, there were also more than a few moments that were really touching??? No pun intended, like touching in the way that makes you put your hand to your chest and stop reading for a second. And a few bits that were really funny in the way Oglaf always is.
All in all, 10/10 would recommend. I Desperately want them to make a Monster Girlfriend/Lover companion anthology, I'm shameless enough to own a set of these.
If you have read the other Smut Pedler books, you know what you are in for. This one is kind of fun, in that all the lovers are some kind of monster, although some are more monstrous than others.
Not all straight, although who can tell what a monster is when it is all tentacles. Gargoyles, fallen angles, ghosts, it is amazing how many things people can have sex with, but it is all done beautifully, and either with humor or grace.
Some are very moving, such as the one about a woman having sex with her recently killed lover, or funny, where a woman captures a vampire and drives him crazy with her needs.
Not a book to race out and find, but if you like erotic sequential art, this should be added to your library. And check out the other Smut Peddler books, too, while you are at it.
Apparently I have literally been sitting here staring at this book since January going "but can I REALLY spend $15 on that??" But I broke down the other day and bought it and BOY IS IT WORTH IT! This anthology was basically tailor made for me, why did I wait so long?! My only complaint is that I wish more of the dicks were, well ...monster-esque instead of just 'human dicks but bigger' but I guess we did get the tentacle story and it was still really good overall. Also there's a story about a vampire written by Gail Simone and illustrated by the woman that does OGLAF, absolutely amazing. Now where is the kickstarter for the monster girlfriend version ;)
A cool and sexy collection of comics with all kinds of "different" boyfriends and unique paranormal relationships (I love the winged galaxy guy who fell into a shed and the anime-looking harpy, especially).
A collection of NSFW comics that features a variety of monster boyfriends, from gargoyles and assorted things with wings, to shapeshifters, robots, and vampires.
Clutch, story and art by Dechanique, colors by Nechama Frier: A hunter accidentally injures a harpy; they become friends, then fall in love. A spare art style with muted colors, but there's still plenty to look at, including an enormous dick and copious amounts of luminescent spunk. Like, I know I'm reading human/harpy sex, but I kinda want to draw the line at glowing jizz? I don't know if that's fair or not, it's just how I feel. The love story was sweet, and I liked its warm sense of inclusion. Contains blood, animal harm, and is it bestiality if both partners are sentient and consenting?
Lonesome Palace, B. Sabo and Leia Weathingon: A man searching for gold breaks his leg and a shapeshifting lizard creature heals him, but there's a price to pay. He can never leave the mountain. I gotta say, this monster boyfriend ALSO has a huge dick. Like scary large. I was taking the monster in the title literally, but what if it's also...a metaphor. For huge dicks. Anyway, I really enjoyed the art's clean lines and style, and also the panel where Nathaniel's getting rimmed by a blue tongue. This is set during the Californian gold rush and that made me a little uncomfortable because the idea of manifest destiny goes largely unexamined as part of this guy's sob story about moving out west. So that's not cool, but I liked the mythology that the artists created and found the ending very satisfying. Contains blood, whatever the sentient consensual form of bestiality is called, and maybe some coercion in that fairy tale sense where you make a deal to save your life, but you were under duress due to, you know, being about to die.
Face Value, Amanda Lafrenais: A human and her robot boyfriend. They're about to install a face upgrade for him, but he's reluctant, so they discuss why, then decide to try out his new penis instead. The art is round and cheerful and so is the relationship. The robot is fat, which threw me at first. I was like, "But—" and then I did the math and just because robots (with the notable exception of Hedonismbot, of course) are usually thin doesn't mean they have to be, or should be. So there you go, fat robot. With a really great way to express himself on his faceplate, and a nicely designed dick. I just wish the human character had a name, and I'm really curious about her arms, why she kept her gloves on during sex, and if that white line is a tan line, or if she's got a little robot in her too. Really liked all the communication and negotiation in this. Contains robosexualism.
Pleasure Fix, Scary-T: Henley's monster boyfriend, Corbin, keeps coming back to their apartment all beat up because he likes to get into monster fights. Henley's upset and gets out the first aid kit, again, and Corbin teases Henley about being into it. The art is cute, round and cartoony, but I didn't like the premise and the sex didn't win me over. Also: Too many sound effects. Apparently SHLKK is the sound foreskin makes when you slide it down? Maybe if you're Wolverine. Contains blood.
Nebula, Savannah Horrocks: A girl and her purple slime monster. Kind of a tentacle thing, definitely multiple penetration, focused almost entirely on sex rather than the already established relationship between them. I liked the art and the woman's chubby body and the way she kept her little white socks on, but the dialogue made the woman sound really young, and the purple slime monster looked a lot like something out of Alien, and apparently I'm not automatically into that. I guess I'd need to know more about their relationship before I could enjoy this. A hint about what the purple thing was would have been nice, too.
Sortuefinde 12, 213-7, story by Spike Trotman, art by E.K. Weaver: Kerwe writes his girlfriend a letter from the front. This is a sad one, with gorgeous art, and a lot of feelings, but the sex is on the astral plane or whatever and kind of made me wonder how great it could really be. I know it wasn't great for me, the reader; I would have been happy with an ecstatic naked hug, which is how it starts out. The sex actually seems extraneous.
Thirsty Work, Jess Fink: Isa is in the mountains, gathering folk tales for his collection of monster stories, when an avalanche throws an unexpected visitor at him and about a million pounds of snow on top of his cabin. Kofi is standoffish and seems almost angry whenever Isa touches him, but they're snowed in, with only each other for company, and have to make the best of things. The relationship in this progresses a little quickly, but I like how it's a complete story with a mystery and some pining. The art is great, and Fink's characters always have a lot of expression in their sweet faces. Some of the sex close-ups are a little "what am I looking at?" but the full body shots are great. The sex is fun and playful, and it's clear everybody's having a great time. One of my favorites from this collection.
Whitehill House, Shari Hes: Alex returns to his ancestral home for the funeral of his grandfather and stays in the family's huge estate where he discovers a secret underground passageway and a gargoyle pledged to serve the master of the house. The art in this is really vague; there are panels where people are completely faceless, which in addition to being creepy, doesn't tell you anything about what they're feeling. Alex has a smartphone, but no personality, and while he's clearly hot to get fucked by the gargoyle, I don't know enough about him to care about the fucking or the future of their relationship.
Spoilsport, written by Gail Simone, art by Trudy Cooper: An ancient vampire gets a modern girlfriend who proves to be a little too much for him. This is absurd, but in a good way, and I love how the ending makes me switch my allegiances. The art is fun and cartoony with bright colors and lots of expression; the panel with the series of selfies is pure magic. But of course it is, Cooper is co-creator of Oglaf, one of my favorite webcomics. And if you're familiar with Oglaf, you won't be surprised to hear that the sex is mainly played for laughs in this one. Another of my favorites. Contains, uh, suicide/vampirism?
A Winged Man Flew Into The Shed, Noora Heikkilä: A winged man definitely falls into the shed, but Pinja is the only one in her family that seems to notice. She's definitely the only one daydreaming about touching him. I really appreciated that there was non-sexual nudity in this piece too, just a bunch of female family members hanging out in the sauna together, naked, and complaining about Pinja's ass holding the door open and letting in all the cold air. The art's lovely, with gentle lines and soft colors, but this isn't so much a romance, despite the romantic style of the art. The sex is still sweet and somewhat tender, but the story doesn't tell you much about what might happen next, and we get no clues to the nature of the winged boyfriend. Contains semi-public sex.
All in all, this is an enjoyable and diverse collection. It includes characters of color, trans characters of color, and people—and robots!—in all shapes, ages, and sizes. It has m/f and m/m pairings, and explicit sex in each piece, though much of it is dick-centric, with a focus on penetration. Surprisingly, all of the monster boyfriends had your basic human dick, even the amorphous purple tentacle thing—which could make its appendages into any shape—had three of them. Maybe it's too much Star Trek fanfic, but I had expected as least one or two non-standard dick configurations. I mean, monsters—am I right? Who knows what they're packing, or not packing. But here, at least, they're all packing dicks.
My DRM-free pdf was part of the Smut Peddler Kickstarter and it's high quality and error free.
Now, this gift from @chachicsbooknook is one that's near and dear my bastos heart. LOL. And honestly, I'm not v much into reading fantasy kink, especially books with monsters, but I found this really fun, the concept was well-thought, and it's scorching HOT. 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 • This collection features 10 original short comics from wonderful artists that absolutely did not hold back on the steam department. I love this bec it's not only diverse in terms of ethnicity and sexuality of the pairings, but also in the monster rep. The beloved vampires and werewolves are here (in an unexpected and hilarious story, I have to note) but there are also harpies, gargoyles, salamander-dragon creatures, an android, and more! • My faves are: ✨ "Sortuefinde 12, 213-7" bec the sadness and fury were expressed poignantly with the beautiful artwork and there's a bit of magic, more than ~monster, ✨ "Thirsty Work", bec it's sweet and the time-frame of the plot allowed for on page romance to develop, even though I found a consent issue (not with the sex, something else, but still), ✨ "Whitehill House" bec there's a TV-soap kind of feel to it that I really liked ✨ "A Winged Man Flew Into The Shed" bec the art was amazing, although I wanted to know more of the monster's origin and what comes after for Pinja. • I kind of want a wlw collection too, so I hope there's a My Monster Girlfriend book too. ✌️

Too many men for my personal tastes, but I enjoyed the storytelling in a few of them. Especially Lonesome Palace and Sortuefinder 12, 213-7 were lovely, if sad, stories.
As with any good anthology there are highs and lows. It shows a wide variety of thoughts and opinions and stories, not just one note. This anthology ranged around the fringes of what "My Monster Boyfriend" might mean. The more porny ones were fun enough, loved the art changes, but where it shines is where it examines what intimacy with an actual monster might mean.
Kickstarted this book, which may indicate a slight bias. *G* A delightful collection of short erotic comics, varying in tone and art style. Pleasantly surprised to see more representation than expected from across the LGBTQIA spectrum. While I enjoyed the stories, I couldn't help but think it contained many a missed opportunity to explore some unconventional designs of monster sex organs. There, I said it. Many of the monsters were vaguely humanoid, which, plot aside, soon began to resemble the usual run-of-the-mill erotica, with appendage-in-orifice action, only with wings. Or horns. Or ethereal blobs. For some examples of strange sex organs, do refer to the Star Trek fanfiction community. My observation is hardly a complaint, though! The sentiment of this collection remains strong - coming to terms with falling in love (or having carnal relations) with otherness. On that front, it certainly delivered. Along with a few hearty laughs out loud (Gail Simone and Trudy Cooper I am looking at you) and awwws. So well-crafted were the stories that the sex functioned to enhance rather than to overwhelm them. After all, isn't that what good erotica is meant to be? Despite the exorbitant shipping fees it cost to get this book in print (because I live in a small SEAsian country literally half the world away from the publisher), I would gladly pay for another round of Monster Boyfriends (and hopefully some girlfriends and non-gender specific monstrous partners too).

Unlike many other projects/people I've backed on Kickstarter, Smut Peddler/C. Spike Trotman has never disappointed me. This is a great comic anthology, with a fantastic range of drawing styles and authors, and romantic stories involving a fantastic range of body types. I liked some stories better than others, and found some sex scenes hotter than other, but this probably depends entirely on one's personal preferences. I enjoyed Clutch for its worldbuilding, Lonesome Palace for the eeriness of its main concept, Face Value for the characters' sheer delight in each other, Sortuefinde because it was so moving, Thirsty Work for its overall charm and the way Jess Fink draws penises (unrivalled!), and Spoilsport is quite funny. The standout story has to be A Winged Man Flew into the Shed, because it's such a perfect little story, so lyrical, told in so few frames, and so lovely and romantic that I almost forgot that the main character's love interest was a rather scary-looking bird-man thing.
Avaible in pdf, but I'd recommend ordering a physical copy.
Queer, het, and non binary pairings, a showcase of bodies that look real and not like plastic and some sweet, sexy erotica all makes me think this comic is the one I have always been waiting for. It was weird and hot and I loved it more each time I read it. I also really liked that there was an array of emotions presented in the stories, it wasn't just pwp or one off fluff (not that those are bad) some of them delt with grief and guilt and wanting acceptance. One story even made me laugh out loud. All of that made it feel more realistic even with the fantastical elements. So if you are ready to discover some kinks you didn't even know you had pick up this book. You won't be disappointed.
The stories and art in this book are excellent, but somehow a lot of them just didn't grab me. A few were delightful. I think maybe I'm just not one for compendiums. I have the same reaction to collections of short stories. I want so much more of some of the stories, so much less of others. One thing that I found was that it was more story-heavy than smut-heavy for the most part, which is perfectly fine.
I think if the idea sounds good to you, you'll probably like it. It's a very good execution of the concept. I think perhaps I just need to look into more long-form work.
Excellent. Maybe only one story I didn't like. Otherwise, the art and stories were uniformly great. As always, loved the diversity of genders and pairings. Also, the writer of the vampire one was such a wonderful surprise. After being pretty disappointed with the 'Other Side Anthology', this reminded me how good Iron Circus is at putting out quality product. Can't wait to Kickstart the next project.
Sexy and moving. Just like we've come to expect from the Smut Peddler. The one story with an indigenous trans woman is probably the best representation of an indigenous trans woman I've ever seen. There's not much representation to pick from, but that just makes it all the more meaningful and that particular story was beautiful on many levels. The many stories with cis characters each had their fun elements as well - from Cute and heartwarming to struggle and spooky.
There was a lot of quality art and story writing in this compilation with a great mix of relationships! My only complaint is that there wasn't a story featuring a dalliance between two vagina owners. Very sex positive though!
I have devoured this in no time! It is so much fun and each story is wonderful and beautiful. The art in each story is stunning, it was a wonderful escape and I want more of this please!
All the art and stories in this anthology were well done, though the collection as a whole wasn't as strong as Smut Peddler usually presents. Overall still a fantastic read.
