As a fan of Egyptian mythology, I had high expectations for this book, but unfortunately I was quite disappointed. When I read that SG-1 had to travel through the Book of the Dead, I was hoping for a lot more Egyptian mythology than the book actually contained.

The story begins rather slowly with SG-1 exploring some ancient ruins. A Tok'ra joins them and after they are attacked by death gliders, they find themselves in some sort of tomb. There, each of them is zatted twice and sent on their journeys.

Unfortunately, these journeys are far from the shifting realities that the description promises us. Instead, they all very soon discover that they are not dead at all. And even if they didn't know it, the reader is told fairly early on that it's all a simulation. With that knowledge, there isn't much left to create suspense, and the story drags along without being truly engaging. I lost interest several times while reading and had to force myself to finish it.

The story had a lot of potential, but unfortunately most of it was not used. At least the characters were well written. Had this not been the case, I certainly would have stopped reading this book after the first few chapters.

I liked the concept (Goa'uld trying to ascend and SG1 passing through the Ancient Egyptian afterlife), but I did find my interest waning at times. An average adventure.

4.5

The plot was unnecessary convoluted. In context, it didn't make sense to me that they went and put on this grand show just to learn more about ascension when it would have been as easy to just... ask. There were better ways to get the characters to do their own little soul searching in my opinion. It's been done in fanfics before and better.

However, I did really like the addition of new lore that fitted with the canon verse. The characters were perfectly IC and it was great to see them. There was also a heavy layer of Sam/Jack which, I won't like, was my favorite part.

It read like an episode of the show and it was really fun. Definitely one of my fav stargate novels.

Good Classic Stargate SG1

This is good classic Stargate. The plot is well developed and engaging. It was a little hard figuring out what character we were following but that could have been handled by putting in a distinctive break, which for some reason the publisher failed to do.

Another good romp

Excellent writing made this book an enjoyable romp thru the SG1 universe. I was pleasantly surprised. The characters maintained their unique identities and it melded well in the scheme of things. I thought there might have been a bit more narration than usual in SG1 novels, but as a fat fantasy reader, it didn't bother me a bit. Fun read.

Very fun to read. I really enjoyed the writing in general and all the characters were very well-written. Also I just really liked the different scenarios each of the members of the team experiences and the description of all the locations they come across. I have to say that sometimes I thought the motivations of some of the new characters and even the logic of the setup was a bit too thin for me, but the characterization and everything else was definitely worth reading this book for.

too much walking and talking…

And not enough action. As usual, there were some editing slip-ups and the glaring fact that over a time period of around 3 days Teal’c didn’t seem to have needed to kelno’reem. If it were faster paced it would have been a fantastic read. Otherwise it was just ok.

There were a few grammatical errors here and there, but this was definitely a worthy read. I enjoyed learning more about the mythology of the Egyptian underworld, especially the riddles that Dr. Jackson faced. It's not the greatest SG-1 adventure ever written, but I would recommend this as one of the better books of the series.

SG-1 is one of my favorite TV series, so I decided to try out some related books. This story had a good plot that kept my interest. It was just nice to revisit the characters and universe I love so much.

Fun and well written! Occurs sometime mid season 5, after Red Sky. Solid characterization, especially with Jack and Teal’c (Carter seemed maybe a little bit off, but not much). Jack and Carter got the most screen time / peril, but Daniel and Teal’c got their time, too.

After being captured and killed by a Goa'uld, each member of the SG-1 team awakens in what seems like the Egyptian afterlife. Each must journey separately to the Hall of Two Truths while accompanied by dead loved ones.

Strange.

Just like the Tv show I liked some episodes better than others, the same is true with the books, still an entertaining read.

This is a solid Stargate novel. The characters sounded and acted like themselves. The sense of place and pacing were excellent so I can forgive a little disappointment with the plot. I'm not too familiar with the Egyptian underworld or the Book of the Dead so my opinion on the story might be my own ignorance. This just wasn't quite what I expected when I read the summary. It was heavy on technology and light on mythology. I liked the concept of the new aliens, but their motivations and logic are a little unclear.

Not Bad

I could not really give this book a five. I would have if the ending were better. The action was good but I can't see Daniel physically able to carry a person the distant he did. Jack wads 100% Jack and he kept the story together. I would recommend this book but you have to kinda know the episodes as several of them are mentioned. This is a stand along book, of course, but the episodes mentioned are just interesting side bars. Anyway, enjoy.

Enjoyable read

A very well written story by someone who knows the stargate universe and the four main characters very well. Most enjoyable. I hope to see more by this author.
