In the (almost) 10 years it's been since A Dance With Dragons has come out, ASOIAF fans have had to keep themselves busy waiting for The Winds of Winter's release. Rereading the books, reading the supplementary material George RR Martin puts out instead of Winds of Winter, watching the HBO adaptation, hating what the HBO adaptation turned into, etc. I've done all that but I also reread DolorousEdditor's excellent "Our Choices Seal Our Fate".

I don't usually care for fanfics, as they're usually A) badly written, B) wish-fulfillment or C) smut pieces. Not so with the works of DolorousEdditor, particularly "Choices". The story is an alternate universe where The Battle of the Trident that is essential to ASOIAF's backstory never happens because the truth of Jon's parentage is revealed the night before. This results in a timeline where there are some radical changes from GRRM's story (Rhaegar becomes King, Robert Baratheon flees Westeros, etc.) while some things still remain the same (Cersei still becomes Queen and has her three children, Jon is raised at Winterfell, etc.). Things seem all happy and dandy but unlike other fics that are wish-fulfillment, DolourousEdditor crafts a dark story that mirrors/resembles the main ASOIAF storyline that puts the characters through hell.

While the characterization for some characters is off and a number of plot-relevant events take place off-screen and are recounted afterward, DolorousEdditor does a fantastic job reimagining GRRM's epic story. They make you care for these characters (both their interpretation of ASOIAF characters and original ones) and excited to see what happens next. It's gotten to the point that I like to imagine there's an alternate universe to our own that if GRRM never wrote ASOIAF but DolorousEdditor wrote a more fleshed-out version of Our Choices Sealed Our Fate it would be just as well-known and beloved as ASOIAF is in reality.

But as DolorousEdditor's fans tragically know, it's been almost 5 years since they have released an update on the story and there's no indication if they'll be back to finish it (or their other fics). There were rumors they had died but it turns out they may in fact be writing an actual book (of which I hope to read if I could ever find out their real name). Regardless of why it's a damn shame, we'll never get an ending to this epic tale. That said I can't recommend this story enough to fans of ASOIAF because it's just so good and worth rereading (I've reread it once a year since discovering it in 2017). Its ending may never be known and there's nothing to say there's a universe where it's finished/adapted by HBO but Our Choices Seal Our Fate is so good it makes one continue to hope.
