A Moving, True Story That Your Past Does Not Have To Define You
I had heard a little of David Mike’s story before reading this book, so I had some idea of what I was getting into. However, I was not prepared for how bad things had gotten for him, nor what he experienced while in prison. It’s not hard to get invested in this story as he takes you along with him through his downward spiral with drugs, the court hearing, his time in jail, and all of the thoughts he had along the way—because he’s sharing from his actual experience. At one point, I literally said out loud, “Oh, David! NO!” as he described his thoughtless actions in a moment of weakness. And this is why his story of redemption is so moving and profound! When you’ve journeyed with him through all of the bad, it’s easy to rejoice in the goodness of God and see how he brings Scripture to life in his own situation. And that truth resonates for us too!
Fascinating read. This book was written by a guy who graduated from the same high school in Germany (Zweibruecken American High School) as I did, but about 12 years after me. His journey took him from AF brat to active duty Army (the opposite of mine.) Through a series of bad choices in his life he continued from active duty to inmate at the United States Disciplinary Barracks at Fort Leavenworth. This book is the story of his trip down that rabbit hole and the struggle back out to freedom and happiness.
This was an honest retelling of one soldier’s derailment. A hard look at his youthful mistakes that lead to serious career ending consequences. The pages follow David’s journey through punishment and redemption as he reconnects with himself, his passions, his family, and his God. I was not uncomfortable reading despite not having any religious leanings of my own. I am a fan of finding and providing a source of compassion, strength, and solace. If you are still searching, this book may help you...no one should wander in darkness alone.
It was so meaningful to me to read this book as a Mom of a son who has recent started life after a prison sentence. I have believed hope was still alive for my son, but there have ben some dark days.
After reading this book an being able to talk to my son without the fence of the phone message "do you accept this call", I feel a sense of regeneration.
It reminds me of God's perspective and love for each of his children.
Thanks, Mike, for your story. It inspires me to write my own.

I really enjoyed David's book. It was easy to read and he did a great job describing military things so a civilian like me could understand. I've never been in the military or been in a physical prison but still, I related to David's story. I lived in an emotional prison for a long time. What brought him freedom is what brought me freedom. These things can bring you freedom too. The power of other people praying for you, the empowerment of knowing you matter and the joyous elation found in knowing the gracious unending love of God. A favorite quote of mine is what he says about God in the final chapter "I could never run far enough, dig a hole deep enough, or screw up bad enough to hide from His love." Thank you for sharing your story David!
This is an incredible testimony of a young man's journey. Well written, an easy read. I was hooked on the first chapter and was never tempted to quickly dismiss any boring parts of the story. There were no boring parts. His experiences and his interpretation of these experiences touches the human in all of us. Fear is a great motivation in all of us to do what's right or wrong. He finds his answers and we have the privilege of following in his journey to redemption.
Dishonor by David Mike is a gripping and deeply personal memoir that chronicles one man’s descent into disgrace and his courageous climb toward redemption. I first picked up this book when I took the job as the chaplain at the facility he describes. I wanted to know how I could provide better service and gauge what I was getting myself into. His story at Fort Leavenworth unfolds with stark honesty and emotional intensity. Mike doesn’t shy away from the gritty realities of prison life or the shame that haunted him. Instead, he invites readers into the darkest corners of his experience, offering a vulnerable look at the consequences of poor choices and the long road to healing. What makes this book truly compelling is its spiritual heartbeat—David’s transformation is rooted in faith, love, and the belief that no one is beyond redemption. From my years on staff now behind me, what I believe set him apart was his acceptance of responsibility. Some people are perpetual victims. They can never hope to experience anything but victimization—by the system, by the guards, by the situations in which they find themselves, and they can never hope to have a better life. Those who take responsibility—even for small everyday things, regardless of guilt (as far as conviction goes). Those people can’t be stopped. I welcomed David back to speak to the inmates during my time at Fort Leavenworth. His message was well received by all in attendance, including staff and residents alike. It’s inspirational to see what success looks like when your mission is the future of the men we care for and for the incarcerated, that a better life on the other side can and is worth the work. Whether you’re drawn to stories of military life, personal transformation, or spiritual awakening, Dishonor delivers a powerful message: your past doesn’t have to define your future. This book is a testament to grace, grit, and the human capacity for change. If you’re reading this, I hope you’ll allow his book into your facility. If you’re considering it for a loved one, please pray. Mike’s story was only made possible by the love and workings of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Honest, captivating, powerful, & hopeful! Highly recommend! David's story is one you won't want to put down or shut off. I started reading the hard copy and then switched to the audiobook when I was getting short on reading time. Having the audio available, I found myself listening any time I could, replacing my normal music or YouTube video times. I didn't want to stop; his story is just that compelling. It also opened my eyes to the struggle of addiction and the many challenges facing those who are incarcerated, even the ones seeking to turn their lives around. Knowing a little about David now through an online community, I knew some of where the story would end, but had no idea how many twists and turns it took to get there. His story exemplifies the power of prayer. It shows the lengths to which God will go in order to bring us back to him. The way He provided for David, even in the midst of his self-destruction, is a testament to the unconditional, never-ending love of a gracious God who never ceases to seek after his children. I loved seeing how God used each person and circumstance in his life to draw David back to Him, and watching as David and the others in his life made those connections both in real time and as they reflect back on things years later. It's an encouraging reminder that, even when we feel like God is silent or things aren't going our way, He is still at work, He still sees us, and He will work ALL things together for the good of those who love Him.
I purchased this book after meeting David Mike in Hairschool. He was my instructor for the time I was in school. After hearing he is an author I had to read his book and support him but wow I didn’t know what I was in for. His story is so touching and Inspiring and you wouldn’t be able to tell just from looking at him. You truly don’t know what anybody has been through and I think this book gives you more insight on just that. He told many stories from memories of being in prison and the process, and I found those very interesting as I’ve always been intrigued by watching crime documentaries, etc. Hearing his story about how he got out of prison and became a civilian again totally makes you think about life in a different perspective. Another factor I loved was all the mentions of how Jesus was working within him, as I am a recent follower of Christ. I think everybody should have this book in their collection. 10/10
David Mike’s story is one of heartbreak and redemption. It is beautiful to see the Lord’s work in his life as a young adult and how He chased after him. I truly appreciate David’s honesty and vulnerability as he doesn’t shy away from his past mistakes and the consequences that followed but instead embracing them as part of his journey. The times of his life that were marked by addiction and imprisonment are foreign situations to me so I, personally, found these details interesting and appreciate how they have opened my eyes beyond my own “bubble.” I highly recommend this read (or listen!).
A very honest look into how much, and how fast, things can turn the wrong direction. Very honest, in-depth, look at the prison system of the US army and how some inmates feel while going through it, and how important support throughout and afterwards is. His continued relationship with God was also a large part of his success throughout, and afterwards, he talks about his journey but I didn’t find it overwhelming. Excellent read!
David Mike tells the riveting story of his falling into a destructive way of life and his journey out. He is not shy about acknowledging the hand of God in the physical path of turning his life around but also, in God's timing, the opening of his eyes in a spiritual awakening that allowed him to see his need for a savior that could free him eternally.
Excellent book. David’s openness about his past issues and the redemptive work of God is amazing to read. From a place of vulnerability comes a message of Hope and healing. I also love the aspect of a family that never gives up on their son. Powerful.
What a beautiful story of the Love of the Father. Redemption from our past has got to be the most miraculous event! I love reading stories that show His mighty Love for us! This is that story. Wonderful read! Thank you
I really enjoyed getting to know David by listening to his life story. I know nothing about drugs, or prison or God. But through David I feel like I have learned about all three.
The story follows David through his early adult years. The story flowed so well that I felt like I knew him. I really enjoyed how his faith was woven into the story without being preachy. It demonstrated the faithfulness of his parents. Once I started the story it was hard to put down; I wanted to know what would happen next. I felt like his big sister in his journey and could feel his pain. So glad he survived, learned from it and flourished!
I taught my kids that you are as good as the group you choose to run with. It is your choice .if you make bad choices they will come back to haunt you.
Touching, emotional, and raw. But mostly, David Mike's story is unforgettable.
From entering the army to desertion to drugs to prison life at Fort Leavenworth, this story captures and keeps your attention. There's a distinct tone to Dishonor, so it feels as if author David Mike is right in front of you, telling you his story over a cup of joe.
There's one particular scene, wherein the author is listening to sermons on tape while in Fort Leavenworth, and it finally hits him: God loves him no matter what he's done in his life. God forgave him when no one else would. Our world needs to hear about this type of love.
I can't recommend this book enough. I hope everyone gets a chance to read David Mike's story.
So, I have read this before. But I just recently finished listening to it on Audible and left this review over there as well..
I'm sure everyone in the Jon Acuff's GCC group knows David is awesome. Like many of you, I had the pleasure of meeting David in one of these challenges. I don't remember which one ... but it's been a minute.
Having listened to this, I caught things I had either missed or forgotten when reading it a few years ago. If reading is not a major part of your life and you prefer listening and it just fits into your schedule better that way (driving, doing chores, running marathons, etc. with a book playing), get this. Now.
Whether you have had legal issues or not is immaterial. It's inspirational and David tells the good, the bad and the ugly. I could relate to a lot of specific details. But the grace of God is the miracle of this story that will inspire you and perhaps lead you to give a copy to someone else.
A memoir centered around a promising soldier whose life spins out of control due to drug use, then the fallout when he's apprehended. The first 5-10% is a bit of a slog, but it's necessary background information in order to understand the rest of the story. The next section is like watching a train wreck - hard to look away. The majority of the rest of the book is an in-depth look at prison life. It's almost like being a tourist in a place you're interested in but never want to experience. Throughout the story, the themes of grace and faith are woven through as well. Overall, a good memoir that suffers slightly from a bit too much repetition of events and concepts. Worth a read if you're interested in the consequences of drug use, what prison life is like, or if you're in the mood for a good redemption story.

David's message (reallyGod'smessage)is one we all need. Not only to hear, but to apply in our lives. He takes you into his personal bell, baring his soul. This book grips you, holds onto you and forces you to face those truly hard questions that gnaw at your heart. I'm not worthy of this grace that Christians talk about. After reading this book, you will be given the truth that can set you free. God does truly love you even the most vile and wretched souls. You can't change that no matter how little you think of yourself. This gift of grace really does stagger the mind because while you don't deserve it, you can't earn it, but you can have it by accepting Jesus into your heart and life. What a story of redemption! God bless you David.
David Mike shares his raw true story in Dishonor. This story takes the reader along with David through the highs and lows of his life. It provides a glimpse into a dark world often sensationalized and rarely portrayed accurately. The story shows it is less important where you start and more important how you choose to finish. It is proof of the importance of never giving up on anyone, even yourself, when bad choices and consequences catch up. Being a military veteran myself, I am glad David wrote this book to share his deeply personal journey. Dishonor shows that no matter what you have been through, what you are going through, or what you will go through - there is HOPE.
David Mike opens the curtain and shares his testimony which is heartbreaking and inspiring at the same time. With this fascinating glimpse into drug, military and prison culture I couldn't put the book down. It inspires hope and encourages us to remember that we are never too far lost from God.
