A patient, who I’ve engaged in trauma work with, gave this to me to read as he believed it helped him with his recovery. While it has a strong religious bent, it also had various points that are consistent with modern psychotherapy.
I am voluntarily reviewing a copy of When the Past Won't Let You Go through the publisher and Netgalley.
The author points out the fact that our lives are built on the foundation of our past, but that does not mean our pasts were designed to limit our future. In fact our pasts were never meant to limit our futures, but sadly many allow this very thing to happen.
This book points out God heals what is revealed, Covering up versus cleaning up, when we just cover up instead of cleaning up we will get stuck. We pass on what we have not cleaned up. We are reminded too that the Holy Spirit gives strength to make peace with our past. Biblical truth is the key to a life unstuck. Freedom comes from surrender.
We are reminded too that in order to move past memory pain, we need to completely to terms with what happened.
We are reminded too that we have the ability to change our thoughts.
The importance of establishing a healthy approach to anger is also highlighted.
The author goes on to tell us "Hope is allowing God's spirit to set us free and draw us forward."
When the Past Won't Let You Go is a book I'd recommend for anyone who needs healing from the past.
I give When the Past Won't Let you go five out of five stars.
This is an informative and a very special book on how to live with your past. I found it to be so enlightening and refreshing. The author who wrote this was such a great counselor I am sure. He talks to your like you were a person not like your were a co-counselor - over your head - it was fantastic. He gives you amazing advise and I loved every word I read and I couldn't wait to read more. I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
