A Risky Assignment is the best book I have read by Sandra Kerns so far. It has all the elements that I find make a story a compelling read. The plot is action packed but still realistic and not over the top. The suspense builds just like the relationship and romance between Burke and Stella. I have grown weary of so much instant love or uncontrollable lust that I found this to be a wonderful welcome.
Probably what is most important to me as I read are well-drawn characters who are endearing and memorable which I found Stella and Burke to be. Stella and Burke were polar opposites but still Ms. Kerns made them the perfect balance for each other. Especially in Burke’s case since he was overwhelmed with guilt and suffered from PTSD. I appreciated how Burke was making progress before he met Stella, yet he did help him to see the positive side of life. Stella herself was no stranger to tragic circumstances either but I loved her gratitude and zest for life.
Along with a nasty villain which added to the danger and suspense, the story has the Masters in minor roles so it was wonderful catching up with everyone. It is by no means a story that couldn’t be read as a stand-alone though. All that A Risky Assignment has going for it, I can highly recommend this book to all suspense romance readers.
This one is my favorite of the two so far in the series. You can only do so much for a character in the short span of a book. Sandra does a great job of guiding both main characters through life struggles as they grow.
