At the dawn of creation, Lucifer ignited the fires of rebellion. Now, after an eternity, the gates of Hell are broken and the angels of the abyss walk the Earth once more. In the so-called City of Angels, a terrible earthquake sparks three days and nights of rioting, and tales of the end of the world. The Devil himself walks the burning streets of Los Angeles. Answering the clarion call, demons congregate in the modern Babylon, searching for answers and for blood. This anthology features ten different tales of horror and apocalypse.

So... White Wolf used to be a major force on my life, and it's fixing to become one again. I found this and a bunch of other novelizations of the various WW branches in my local used book store. I made myself buy only 2. This was a challenge.

It's not a great book. It's a lot of sex and violence wrapped in the cover of RPG mechanics. At one point, it contains one of the greatest typos ever invoving the misspelling of heroin for heroine. I had a great time reading it. If you enjoy playing Demon and reading about sex and violence wrapped in the cover of RPG mechanics, you'll also have a good time reading it. If you don't, no one will think less of you. This is a book for WW fans and really no one else, but it has given me some fun thoughts about where to take my new character, and that is what it is meant to do, anyway.

Lucifer's Shadow misses on the two things it should provide, depending on why you are interested in it.

First, as a part of the DtF line, I was expecting it to enrich the world of the game, specially since it's portraying Lucifer's return during the Night of the Devil Earthquakes in LA (arguably the most important moment in the DtF plotline). But it did not. Didn't provide any clarity on why any of that happened, what Lucifer wanted to do or achieve, or even develop the characters from City of Angels which should have been front and center. Admittedly I didn't reach the end of the book before abandoning it on the fifth story, so they could change all that in a deep turn in the later third of the book, but I don't think they will.

And second, as a collection of short stories, it fails to actually deliver any story I actually found compelling. Most of them are unclear on where they are going and seem to end in a point that was decided for no particular reason. The writing I found to be bland and uninteresting, sometimes even confusing, and characters lacked any appeal or interest in them (maybe with the exception of the MC of the second story, the one with the mandalas).

So, all in all, I do believe this to be a waste of time.

3,5/5. A very interesting anthology focusing on a character from each of the Houses of the Fallen on Demon, in the days following the great quake at LA and Lucifer’s Apparition. As with any anthology, some stories are mich better than the others, but all in all they’re fairly good and give a very precise idea of the iind of characters one can make in the game, their powers, frailties, and relationship with humanity.
