Colshannon #2

High Society

Rate this book
Heiress Missing: The Untold Story. Clemmie Colshannon, a London art appraiser framed (pun intended) by her boyfriend and subsequently fired, retreats to the bosom of her eccentric family in Cornwall to recover. But no sooner has she unpacked her bags than her sister, Holly, an energetic reporter who lives to scoop, enlists Clemmie’s derring-do on a juicy story. It seems that Emma McKellan, who writes the society pages for the Bristol Gazette, has disappeared days before her lavish wedding. As Holly and Clemmie search for clues on the missing bride (relishing the prospect of delicious scandal), they inadvertently steer themselves directly toward trouble. In times of crisis, the Colshannon clan is always in the thick of things–particularly Clemmie’s drama-queen mother, who has an affinity for saving wild animals, and her brother, who goes to outrageous extremes to impress a certain girl and succeeds only in terrifying her. Whether she likes it or not, Clemmie always seems to find herself in the throes of adventure. And sure enough, the whole family is soon fleeing to the south of France . . . with an ex-convict in hot pursuit. From the Trade Paperback edition.

Society Girls

This kind of book is a guilty pleasure for me. You know, that kind of book that doesn't make you think, simple premise, sarcastic narrator, and entertaining. Society Girls is that kind of book, and hell, yes, it's entertaining.

It's an indirect sequel from Mason's previous book, Playing James that I've read years ago. To be honest, I really enjoyed Playing James. Mason indeed possesses great sense of humor--though sometimes insensitive--and Holly Coshannon proves to be a great and fun story teller. I expect the darker and harder case, like what Cabot does amazingly in Size 12 Is Not Fat series, where the case is mostly murder and the culprit is somewhat unpredictable. Mason may need to learn from Cabot about how to combine criminal case and chick lit.

In Society Girls, the narrator is Holly's older sister, Clemmie, who predictably has similar voice with Holly. It's difficult to distinguish these sisters' voices in their respective book, and at first, Society Girls may be narrated by Holly and you'll never know. The uncanny resemblance doesn't stop there. Despite Mason's hard effort to make this book different, Society Girls is basically Playing James with different characters--or more less the same characters. The plot, the romance are all the same, which makes us question the intention of this book.

Nevertheless, Society Girls is an entertaining read, and that's all I need in this cruel and crazy world.

Just as Playing James, Mason's first novel featuring the Colshannon family, Society Girls was witty, suspenseful, and filled with just the right amount of romance. This time we are introduced to Clemmie, the older sister of Holly. Clemmie turns out to be just as adorable and entertaining as her sibling and I really enjoyed getting to know the rest of the family better. Originally I took this book from the library as an easy summer read to take on a road trip, but I ended up with the huge desire to know what happens next, both with the the mystery the family has stumbled upon and the love interests evolving. This resulted in a night of binge reading and a very satisfied reader. Society Girls is easy, lighthearted, charming and a great summer read.

This book was vaguely okay. A little slow at the beginning, a little more to be desired at the end; it would be a better book if one was already absolutely in love with the Colshannon family from the previous book featuring Clemmie's sister, Holly. (And I wasn't.)

I don't know, it seems like it would be a better book if it was still told from Holly's point of view. It's not like she was nonexistent in the novel; she appeared in several places for good chunks of time.

And the suspense over who likes who was virtually nonexistent.

And I didn't particularly like Clemmie in general. She wasn't a good heroine, and she wasn't even a good representation of the average woman.

In general, it was a spectaularily blah book. I wasn't ever at the edge of my seat, and I never was over-eager to pick it up again. Meh.

Chick-lit, mixed with a bit of detective work and adventure story. And all this mainly set in Cornwall with a big extented family (including some pets) are the main protagonists.

It is easy to read, but also nothing memorable or even reading again. The story is ok (but you know quite soon who will end up with whom), the writing style is ok as well, but it's missing something special or maybe a certain wit + humour.

I also have two other books by this author, one of them about the same family (but with a different sister in the foreground) -> "Playing James". I wouldn't say that I don't wanna read them now - but my expectations aren't too high.

The book's title has next to nothing to do with the real story, and I wonder why it's called like that. Also, the cover picture is in no relation at all to the story. Probably only choosen hoping to sell the book better.

Just finished reading this book, and I gave 4 stars for it. Just like Playing James, High Society made me laugh from page to page. I love Sarah Mason writing style, so fresh and funny. Well, maybe the story not as strong as Holly's, but still...I liked it. I just wished there's more interaction between Clemmie and Sam. But overall, this book is really worthed to read, especially for chicklit lovers.

Short impression:
I dislike Playing James, I dislike Holly, so it came to a surprise to me that I kinda like High Society. Maybe because Holly wasn't the main character? But she was still there to mess things up. I really want to smack Holly in the head.

What is it about:
(the blurb on the Indonesian edition is kinda misleading, it's not entirely wrong, but I don't think it reflects the story inside)
After being nosey in something that wasn't their business, the Colshannon girls, Holly and Clemmie, had to fix things up. That means, but not limited to, hiding out Emma (daughter of a prominent person and Holly's coworker) in their Cornwall home, facing (probably) Emma's murderous ex-convict ex-boyfriend, and dealing with their love life. Such is life.

What I like about it:
Well, Clemmie was a pretty reasonable person compared to Holly. Although both her and Holly had some hard times to shut up, I'd say she even more likable person than her sister
Sam, as the love interest, was an OK male protagonist in my book.
What got me hooked was the case itself. I like mystery book and, though this one is marketed as chick lit, I treat this book as a detective book.
Suffice to say, it ended quite nicely and convenient for everyone involved.

What I don't like about it:
Holly was there. Like, seriously, how could James stand her. She was super annoying and got Clemmie in trouble. She was also super selfish with her own job that she didn't consider Clemmie or James' job. I imagine James would dump her in the nonexistent third book. But then again, James was the one who bailed out on his own marriage for Holly so.
The book lost one star because it repeated the same theme as the previous installment: loving someone else when they were in a relationship with another. Come on. It's not like I didn't root for Clemmie and Sam, it's just that, not cool. It's still a little better than how James broke up with his fiance, but only by 0.01% margin.
The ending was pretty abrupt as it can be explored more before.

Last thought:
I really should stop fall for books with cute covers.

I really wanted to like this book. I loved Playing James, but this one, was just kind of a mess. Hard to follow and too much character info at the wrong times.

I wasn't sure how this would stack up against Playing James, but after a tentative start, I absolutely fell in love with Clemmie and her story. A wonderful holiday read!

Tapi buat yg udh baca Playing James pasti tau gimana lucunya tokoh Holly disitu.

Sam udh lama diem2 suka sama Clemmie. And he really is a sweetheart. Dan meskipun si Clemmie ini nyentrik dan cuek tapi Sam tetep cintaaaaa, pdhal penampilan Sam sendiri kayak eksekutif muda soalnya dia kan pengacara. Jd ga kebayang deh gimana anehnya mrk saat jalan berdua.

2 stars I always know that when I don't like a book, a lot of things shift around in my head, creating some irrational and sudden decisions about other things at random rather than focusing on the book at my hands. And that's exactly what happened to me. It just. . . it didn't occur to me no matter how hard I try to will myself. It just didn't happen. I always feel bad about it.

In all honesty, when I shut down a book when I'm still on the first thirty pages, it feels like I let the whole world down. It's sad but when the moment I try to force it, the words stumble and everything looks blurry and obscured.

But if I am to say an honest opinion about Society Girls, I did not enjoy it. I did not hate it but I did not enjoy it as much either. Confidentially, this isn't my type of genre. Okay, I'm being totally bias and this whole review just doesn't make sense but I'm going to point out what I feel.

There were some parts in which I did crack a smile or sneak out a small giggle here and there but most of it were just plain words, mixed together until it came down to a point when it got all jumbled together and the whole deal was just nonsensical. And it took so long before the plot actually happened. Where's the fun in that?

I'm not going to judge the author based on the first few pages I had only read so I'm not going to sink the boat any further. I'm sure that this would appeal to readers who take a lot of interest with chick-lit genres (and add in a huge chunk of mystery dibs). A book isn't always for everyone. Half of the people don't always get along with it all the time.

Baca yang kedua kalinya, tetep aaah, kasih bintang 4. Emang gak sebagus buku Playing James yang tentang Holly & James sich. Tapi tetep aja seru. Penasaran juga ama gimana tampangnya Sam. Pas baca buku ini jadi kebayang-bayang gimana tampangnya Sam, James ama Barney. Kayanya slurpy banget deh, haha.

Coba kalo ama Clemmie, kayanya Clemmie kena omelan or diledekin terus...

Anyway anyhow, terungkap deh, kenapa Sam memperlakukan Clemmie kaya gitu. Karena, Sam sendiri naksir Clemmie. Di akhir cerita, semua berjalan lancar, termasuk kasusnya Emma dan Clemmie jadian ama Sam.

meet clemmie colshannon, sister of holly colshannon, the eccentric journalist featured in playing james. she moves in with her parents after a getting dumped by her boyfriend, loosing her job, and a spontaneous trip around the world. her sister holly comes to visit and before they know it, they're neck deep in a huge scandal...
one of holly's co-workers, emma, has disappeared a week before her wedding. no one knows where she is or why she so suddenly resigned from work. holly, being the journalist she is, decides to go and invistagate with her sister. with their exceptional sleuthing skills they manage to locate her.
but emma didn't want to be found...and so begins a mad dash across london and france to save holly, clemmie, sam (their brother's best friend), and emma.

ugh...this book is fine for a quick read but it's really quite bad. i've got a whole list of complaints!
1) this main character in this book was supposed to clemmie. she really wasn't. but the problem was - it wasn't even about holly or emma! there was no main character!
2) omg! this was so predictable it wasn't even funny! i guessed who clemmie would fall in love with and marry in the first 10 pages. you're an idiot if you cant!
3) the story line was crappy! nothing was explained so well and quite honestly - something like this would never happen in real life and yet it's still called 'realistic fiction'

ugh...whatever...if you still want to pick it up go ahead...but im not guarenteeing how much you'll like it.

Well,, Sarah maybe like the detective story and she also like romance, so she decided to combine both of them. ;)
its quite creative.
she made us thought that emma's dad was kidnap her, but after i re-think again, maybe its not like that. Because if yes, it would be very simple. And after we all know that her dad wasnt kidnap her and in fact she was running from her fioncee, martin. I thought that finally she would be have a happy ending story with martin, because when sarah try hard to make us think that martin is a very bad guy and wanna do something bad to emma, i think he is sorry because he did something stupid and realize taht he finally love emma.
But in fact, yeah..its true that he felt sorry but emma isnt have happy ending story with him, because shes pregnant with the other guy.

But i dont like clemmie's character. I dunno that she's a bit dumb or what, but she's like a spoiler girl who being scared of all of things, and its kinda sucks. She also always blame other people, and always do something stupid. But she's funny sometimes. and also her mom is kinda weird. she likes drama very much til she like obsessed about the other people's life, but shes kind obviously.
but overall, i like this family! :D

and the ending is so sweet. sam is so sweet!! :D
i love the ending! ^^

So funny, and definitely not trying to be anything it's not. I read this book and its prequel whenever I'm feeling down (although I prefer this one to Playing James).
Clemmie is not a perfect girl; she is a huge klutz, a bit of a ditz, and she has just been fired from her job because her ass of a boyfriend/coworker is well, an ass.
So she goes home to her parents where she tries to figure out exactly what she's doing with her life. Which turns out to be, not much. Clemmie is now stuck living back at home and waitressing for the local cafe. Until her sister comes home for a visit....
Clemmie's story revolves mostly around her trying to ignore the fact that her life has completely imploded, and to do that, she decides to help her sister out, a journalist whose coworker has mysteriously vanished.
Of course, being chick lit, there is a romantic interest. But it's not the focal point of this book, definitely not at all. It's more like the cherry on top. Besides all the crap Clemmie has going on, she also has a crush on a completely incompatible man to deal with, yay!

Read it, enjoy it. This is a summer read in the most basic form: sheer fun.

Halah piye to?

Ya gitu deh, capek banget menyelesaikan novel setebal 448 halaman. Endingnya biasa aja deh. So 2 bintang aja dah buat novel ini.

Perhaps I read too many of Sarah Mason's books in a row. I'm glad that this is the last one available to me for the moment. I'm afraid she's running out of funny things to say. She is very consistent though. But it gets tiring when it becomes too repetitive. Some comments have been recycled from the first two books. What's sad is a comment or two was recycled in this single book. I noticed this early on while reading her first and second books; but it wasn't much of a big deal to me until I got to the third. A bit too much in such a short amount of time for the sake of entertainment. This book is still very funny. But I strongly recommend that the reader reads other books in between so the Sarah Mason experience remains fresh. I think if I took my own advice, I would have given this 4 stars.

This book was s***. End of.

Ok not really. I initially liked the main character (Clemmie) but lost interest after it turned out the whole book would revolve around her sister's ex-work mate being stalked by an ex-convict. Stupid. Ludicrous... and bland.

There is no need for the entire first chapter which begins in France...

The repeated attempts at humour in regards to Norman and Morgan are a fail...

Clemmie doesnt seem to get her employment prospects in order...

Clemmie comes across as extremely immature...

I was expecting Clemmie to get a job at her sister's newspaper writing the High Society coloumn, with her needing to pretend she has more class than she does and then falling in love with a seriously elligble batchelor... so something on those lines.

This is chick lit at its worst.

From Mason's books I liked this one the least. Mostly because I was a little irritated with Clemmie. She wasn't really interesting, she was timid and a bit passive sometimes, and I usually like the more proactive and colourful characters. But apart from that I liked that we get to know more the crazy Colshannon clan, their crazy pets (really, who keeps a seagull at home???) and their very unusal and complicated family life. Oh, and I liked Sam as well (and didn't really get why ha was so fascinated with Clemmie, but then again, that was my main problem with the book). But if someone liked any of Mason's novels she will love that one too, because she is funny.

Following "Playing James," this sort of sequel focuses on Holly's sister Clemmie, although Holly and James still make an appearance. The title is misleading, because neither Holly nor Clemmie are society girls, nor do either write for the society column (which is what I thought was going to happen), but the story is more about a mystery involving the previous society column writer. Holly and Clemmie get mixed up in the mystery, pulling their family and friends along for the silly ride. I enjoyed it very much.

Yep. 2.5 stars
It simply was not for me.
It is a really sweet and funny read. I liked the humour but it definitely wasn't of the lol-kind. The heroine was too self-deprecating for my liking. I mean, yeah - laugh about yourself, be self-ironic, but please NOT ONLY!
The romance is merely hinted at and develops mostly during the last 60 pages.
I would recommend it, when you are in the mood to read about a charmingly funny family and want a book that is not centered around the romantic couple only. Lots of friendship, mother- and sisterhood and odd pets to be had in this one :)!

I really enjoyed this book - it was fun. It is a bit annoying at times when the MC gets in her woe-is-me moments and also makes terrible decisions in tracking down the missing woman urged on by her sister hence the 3 stars, but the overall mystery was fun. I enjoyed the romance but its very much but there isn't much to it and its very early stages still when the book ends and I would have liked more - though he DOES have a girlfriend and I'd like to have seen him ditch her sooner. I'd describe this book as fiction with a romance sub-plot.
