Going to a local outdoor production of this play during the upcoming weekend, so wanted to brush up on it before I experienced it. For me, reading Shakespeare is more about information than enjoyment. This edition includes a 125 pp intro (which I have not read yet), and the text itself is another 125 pp - as much of it taken up by notes as by the actual play. I have not read Shakespeare in nearly 25 years now (I have seen some plays performed), and recently gotten back into him (King Lear and The Tempest). Forgot how much I enjoyed a scholarly approach to his work.
Hard to "enjoy" while reading, the flow is broken with constantly going to the bottom of the page to read the notes. But, again, I read him more for information (provided by the editor of the volume, Peter Holland of Notre Dame here) than the enjoyment of his artistry. Looking forward to seeing the play performed, of course a perfect choice for Summer outdoor theatre. This production, I have read, has a '60's hippie vibe to it - rather outdated, but I hope to enjoy.
