Benjamin Frederickson, the future Earl of Wembley, can’t forget that night… The night that changed him…
More importantly, he can’t forget that brave little girl who was scarred from the horrible fire.

Catherine Watson.

The night young Benjamin Frederickson met the victim of a house fire, he has remembered it all of his life… Her spirit has lingered in his memory for years.
Even through his days of rebelling against his father, The Earl of Wembley, as he drinks, gambles, and womanizes.

But when he meets the beautiful Catherine Watson again, still scarred from that fire so many years later, he is enchanted.
But can a woman so remarkable remember a boy she met briefly years ago?

Catherine, however, is less than impressed!
Considering herself disfigured and resigned to the idea that she will never marry, she sees his advances as a cruel a joke at her expense.

How can any man view her with anything but disgust, especially the dashing future Earl of Wembley?

“I cannot believe that you genuinely want to spend time in the presence of this.” She pointed to her own scarred neck and her covered arm.
“Then your belief in me is sorely lacking,” he sulked angrily. “As is your opinion of your own self.”

It won’t be easy for Lord Benjamin to convince Catherine of his love.
Is he up to the task?

“I wish it were different. I wish you could court me as if I were normal.”

Will Catherine let the past dictate her future?
Will Benjamin give up and let her go?

This was a sweet story with characters that were broken and needed something, something they didn't know they needed.
Lovely scenes filled the pages.

I am so glad I was given this ARC to read and review. Lovely book, with so much heart. I hope Charlotte Stone writes more about these families. They are worthy of their own stories too.

Hum.. should I add a review. This book had very little story line and too much drama. Insta love gone all weird with some of the stupidest misunderstandings and reasons not to get together I have ever read. Just was irratated waiting for it to get better. I actually really liked this couple in the next book :} Sometimes free on amazon is not a good thing.

Liked the premise but seemed to drag.

Let me first say I love finding clean romance stories.
The storyline is sweet and I loved the beginning. However, I found the story being the same part repeated in the same way every couple chapters. I felt the book would have ended wonderfully halfway through instead of it being dragged out. The second half seemed to be the first half retold in different words . I liked the ending and the characters were cute but the write seemed discombobulated at times. And it was more tell instead of show.

A read with well-rounded and deeply inspiring characters, flaws and all. It's a story where Benjamin and Catherine learn to face their deficiencies and still able to love who they are, just as they are.

Benjamin’s past has been less than exemplary – drink and women were his staple. Catherine’s greatest flaw is not believing she is up to par—men would not be interested in a disfigured woman. Each of them do a lot of growing as they learn what is important in life and more importantly who is important.

As with all good reads, the story starts with a scene of action. Catherine’s family is caught in a home fire and barely escape with their lives. Catherine, age 10 at the time, narrowly escapes death. When she awakens in her bed chamber, disoriented by smoke, her only thought is to save her younger sister who sleeps in the nursery. In this selfless act, she shows her character, one which is reinforced through the story.

Note: Two loose ends which I didn’t get answers: 1) who started the fire, and 2) who saved Catherine. Perhaps there is a mystery of sorts which will be answered later in the series.

Benjamin, son of Earl of Wembley, came with his father to the fire as aid to their neighbor. He was only 13 years old; the event had a lasting impression on him. As an adult, he remembers the young girl Catherine. It was her bravery and courage in the face of pain and disfigurement, he held in his mind long after he left the scene of devastation.

"It didn’t make any sense to him, how someone who had not been in the world long enough to do any damage to it, could be so damaged by that same world."

Catherine soon learned her life was to serve her father and younger daughter. How could anyone love her when she was so deeply scarred on her neck and arm?

Many years past, Ben returns from university only to find he’s still intrigued with his neighbor. He was enchanted with who she had become. Adversity can either make or break an individual and in this instance Catherine’s natural goodness and character blossomed.

It took a lot of effort to convince Catherine she is worthy. Benjamin has a warm, loving spirit, but a man’s pride can take only so much. After losing his father whom he loved, he didn’t have the energy to continue the fight for Catherine. Her insecurities barred his path, destroying his hope for a loving relationship.

A character I hope to hear more about is Benjamin’s sister, Lady Julia. She’s a very strong woman who covers her broken heart very well and has gained much wisdom through her short life. She also helps Benjamin find happiness in the thing that sisters very capably do. What, you ask? Interference, of course!

Lady Julia, twin of Benjamin has an occasion to speak with Catherine.

“ This is the way I see it: That fire took something from you. It doesn’t matter to Ben, and it shouldn’t matter to anyone who cares for you. But it matters to you. Will you let that fire continue to eat away at your life, even now?”

This is a heart-warming, entertaining, sweet romance, where internal conflict and emotions run high. It is my first read from this author. I look forward to continue the series.

I felt like this book had potential, but as written it hit on some of my personal pet peeves. The love between the two characters felt rushed and without much of a foundation to me. Benjamin had met Catherine when she was younger, and she had exhibited bravery in trying to rescue her sister and in putting on a brave face while in pain. But that was their only- and very brief- meeting. Fast forward many years, and when he met her again he was pretty instantly smitten. She rejected him- A LOT- but apparently his love was strong enough to withstand many rejections by a woman he barely knew in the past and seemed to have really very few interactions with in the present. Realistically, I just don't feel like he'd keep pining for someone who had rejected him, who he barely knew anyway. Also, she was SO fixated on how unlovable she was because of her injuries- which sounded fairly minor in terms of disfiguring her- and maybe it was because she had been "burned" by rejection due to injuries in the past, but that was never even hinted at until pretty late in the book (and actually- I really wasn't sure she had been made fun of in the past. I think the only reason the people were making fun of her at that time was because they were jealous. And since it didn't sound like she had much attention from males in the past, there wouldn't have been cause for jealousy before...) . Anyway, by that point in time, I had already fallen out of love with her. Also, she was described as being his perfect match because of how "brave" she was, but in the present day I didn't feel like she exhibited much bravery. I found myself humming Taylor Swift's song, "Shake it off", and wishing I could sing it for Catherine. I think if there would have been more character development for Catherine personally and more interaction between her and Benjamin before he started proposing, I could have really like the book. It looks like this is the author's first book and most authors seem to get better as they progress in their careers. Like I said, I saw potential (the voice, setting, cleanliness level, and concept) and I would probably consider reading future books if the level of development improved. But it has a lot of four and five star reviews so it appears I am in the minority with my thought process :)

Pritchford, Yorkshire

Catherine Watson, age 8, has awakened to find her home on fire and her little sister, Jane, crying in the nursery. Even though flames are all around her, Catherine tries to get to her sister only to pass out. She she awakes later, she is in terrible pain from some terrible burns she has suffered. No one knows how she managed to get out of the house on her own. Her sister and the rest of the family is safe.

Benjamin Frederickson is the son of the Earl of Wembley. He and his father arrive at the scene and Benjamin is amazed at the bravery of young Catherine and how she managed to escape the fire that totally destroyed her home. He has always been encouraged by this father to be a man who cares about the land and the people.

Ten Years Later

Benjamin is now home from Oxford and remembers his father lecturing him on his responsibilities to the estate. He and his twin sister, Julia, are so different in that he is very sensitive and she is more matter-of-fact.

When Benjamin sees Catherine again, he notices her scars but remembers her incredible bravery on the night she was injured. When he questions her as to why she does not wish to have a Season in London, she is incensed at his insensitivity. Catherine is very self-conscious about her scars and does not wish to be where people can see her and stare. But Benjamin sees only the lovely young woman she has turned out to be.

As they see one another more, Benjamin asks for her hand only to be turned down. She feels that with her scarred body she would not be a good Countess for him.

Is there a way that Benjamin can convince Catherine that her life matters and he wants to share his life with her?

This was a sweet, clean romance that proves that people should be accepted for who they are inside.

I look forward to reading more books by this author.

When you're going to be the next Earl your training starts early. So when there is a massive, destructive fire the earl brings almost thirteen year old Benjamin along along to teach him his responsibilities to those on his land. The lesson he learns is far greater and goes far deeper than anyone realizes.
Catherine, Cat as she is known for her curiosity, at eight years of age, dreams of knights in shining armor, dragons, and other heroes. All the marvelous things in dreams of little girls everywhere. The fire that destroys her family home almost takes her life when she rushes out of her bedroom into the nursery to save her younger sister, just like one of her dream heroes. She lives, but at what cost? Burns to her arm, hand, chest and neck area. And so Ben meets Cat,when she's laying there with her skin melted off. His one thought is "How brave she is!". Second only is - he now knows what it means to be an Earl.
Ten years later, Ben is back from Oxford and Cat is all grown up when they meet. In a moment, Ben knows who she is, Cat doesn't recognize him at all as the boy who soothed her that long ago night. The dance begins. Ben admires what she has become, never forgetting the brave undefeatable child she was. He loved her then, it has just grown from a childhood infatuation to an adult admiration and full blown deep seated love.
The journey these two take is one anyone would enjoy following along. I know I surely did! Twists, turns, a girl who thinks she's damaged goods and a boy who worships her for who she is, was, and will be. Join them on their journey of discovery. It is not what you expect, nor what you think. There are surprises to keep you engrossed along the way. A joy to read and discover. Enjoy yourself!!

The Earl's Unforgettable Flame by Charlotte Stone is an exciting read. Adventure, danger, an unforgotten past, and a deep emotional journey. A young boy now, as an Earl, can't forget the good deed a young girl did. She risked her life. Now, as a woman, Catherine has the scars that make her feel like an outcast. She feels like she is not worthy of any suitor's attention nor love. But then fate sends Benjamin into her life. He wants her. Catherine doesn't think he could and the lack of self-esteem she has causes Benjamin to try. He wants her to know he can and does want her. But will her attitude keep them both from finding their true happiness?

Charlotte Stone's writing is superb. She sucked me right into the plot. Tempting, bold, and thrilling. The Earl's Unforgettable Flame is indeed a perfect title for this read. The main characters lure me deep into their backgrounds and their present moments. I loved following them both. Each with fighting for a good cause. If I were in the main female character's shoes I too would be hesitant if an Earl like Benjamin took interest in me. Catherine considers herself a damaged good. Living with ugly scars can take a lot from an individual. The banter between both characters is enticing. I kept turning the pages in a haste to read it all. Benjamin is a good gentleman with good intentions; however, a man can only try so hard. The game of love is unpredictable but worth every struggle. Overall, I highly recommend The Earl's Unforgettable Flame to all.

A “light” read, well written with humor, wit, and a touch of pain, angst, and sorrow.
Charlotte Stone’s “The Earl’s Unforgettable Flame” Catherine “Cat” Watson, the daughter of a gentleman and Lord Benjamin, son and heir of the Earl of Wembley have already met … when they were children and a fire destroyed Catherine’s home and almost destroyed her. They meet again on a street corner; Ben can’t forget the night they originally met, but Catherine believes he insults her by staring at her scars. Mortified Catherine hustles Jane and herself off. Irritated every time Benjamin comes to visit, he’s after more than she can imagine and she can’t get over her scars and what she imagines they mean.

Catherine’s ebullient sister Jane, Benjamin’s twin Julia, his best friend “Shep”, the Duke of Sermont all work together throughout to get Catherine and Benjamin together. Trying to persuade Cat to overcome adversity in the face of it.

I enjoyed reading this romance, it is a quick moving spirited story, where perseverance eventually pays off. Thank you Charlotte Stone for an enjoyable story.

This is the first book in the clean historical romance Fire and Smoke series. As the main characters for book two of the series are introduced with some depth in this offering I believe reading the books in sequence may enhance the reading experience. Although some reviewers found this story to be a bit tedious, I found that it only seems tedious because both Cat and Ben were stubborn protagonists who reacted precisely as stubborn people do. I was hoping that Ben would have discovered the identity of the arsonist before the closing paragraph as well as an explanation of how Cat was removed from the burning house and place on the grass outside. These are loose ends that I hope will be revealed later in the series. I thoroughly enjoyed this book because, in my opinion, the characters were true to life with faults and failings. At the same time Cat and Ben both tended to react to each other unselfishly when they mistakenly thought their actions were in the best interests of the other.

This first book in a series, that can be read as a standalone, is a clean Regency romance with a touch of mystery, and a strong, stubborn hero and heroine. It is a beautiful story about flaws and how love can look past the flaws to whom you really are. The Earl's Unforgettable Flame by Charlotte Stone is an exciting read full of adventure, danger, an unforgotten past, and a deep emotional journey. Charlotte Stone's writing is superb, tempting, bold, and thrilling. I enjoyed this book, and highly recommend this book and the author. It reminded me a bit of Jane Austen's style of writing.

A difficult courtship

Catherine suffered damaging burns in a house fire when she was a child. Benjamin, a young boy, was present afterward and tried to offer her some comfort to distract her from the pain.

After Oxford, he returned home and met her again. He wanted to court her, but she was unable to believe he was serious because of her disfiguring scars. In fact, she suspected he was making fun of her.

This is an emotional story. The characters are well developed and easy to like. If I had proofread this book, I would have made 47 corrections.

Very Sweet!

A clean romance. A terrible fire destroyed their home, and Catherine 's dreams. Unselfishly, at eight years old, she ran to the nursery to save her baby sister. She was left with some outward scarring, but God kept her beautiful on the inside! The Earl's young son was brought by his father, to the home where they called a doctor, 3 years older he wanted desperately to help her. Both of them never forgot that night. However, can Catherine get past her scars, to allow a now grown man to love her? I highly recommend! Thanks! Enjoy!

Regency Romance: The Earl's Unforgettable Flame (CLEAN Historical Romance) (Fire and Smoke) by Charlotte Stone is a sweet, clean Regency Historical Romance. Book 1 in a new and what promises to be an intriguing series.

Benjamin Frederickson, the future Earl of Wembley, a man who rebells his father by gambling, womanizing, drinking and scandal filled days. But he has never forgotten a brave little girl named, Catherine Watson, who survived a house fire and is left with a disfiguring scars.
Forward to years later, when they meet again....
Catherine believes no one would marry a scarred, disfigured woman. She's accepted her fate. Enter... Benjamin who is enchanted by her bravery, her forwardness, and her imperfections.
But, Charlotte is not convinced Benjamin wishes to spend time with her, much less make a marriage proposal, instead she feels his advances are at her expense.
Can Benjamin and Charlotte find their HEA?

Well written, steady paced story, with engaging and captivating characters. The storyline, while not completely unique, is compelling and utterly fascinating. A sweet, Regency Romance, with adventure, a bit of danger, passion, mystery, acceptance, healing, secrets and a forgotten past. Add a touch of suspense and romance, readers are sure to be captivated by "The Earl’s Unforgettable Flame".
I loved the way Benjamin captures and shows Charlotte her scars are not what defines her, and how she blossoms. Strong hero and heroine make for an emotionally charged story. Readers will be captured by the characters and the storyline.

Ms. Stone is a wonderful storyteller! One who drawn me into the story from the first sentence, forward. What a great Clean Regency Romance! My only complaint, unanswered questions, like who started the fire that disfigured Charlotte, why was the fire started, and by whom. I would call it a cliffhanger, although, Benjamin and Charlotte's story reach an enjoyable ending. Hopefully, we find some of the unanswered questions in the stories to come.

Strongly recommended for fans of Historical Romance, sweet romance, mystery, acceptance, a brave, strong, disfigured heroine, eternal conflict and a hero who learns to change his ways, to prove himself.
An enjoyable and satisfying read!
A personal buy, as well as received for an honest review. However, all opinions, insights and thoughts are my own personal opinions.

Very Sweet

A few errors, but not too many to disuade a good rating. It is a clean, Christian, Regency romance. It was so sweet, in fact, I feel like I may need to see a dentist soon. ;) It was a bit over the top, no real conflict, just melodrama over the insecure heroine. It drug on a bit much and doesn't focus enough on the secondaey characters, imo.

Overall, I call 3.5 stars.

Clean Recency Romance

This book was a sweet book about a young girl who was disfigured in a fire. A young boy was there offering her help by using soothing words and washing her face with a cool cloth. He never forgot her. Fast forward ten years and the romance begins. It was a sweet story. I got a bit bogged down with some of the story, but it ended very well. I loved the characters and I loved the ending. I definitely recommend this book.

INNER INVISIBLE SCARS CAN HOLD ONE BACK !

Charlotte Stone gets 4 STARS for her interesting and beautiful The Earl's Unforgettable Flame : Fire and Smoke, a story that starts when our couple in the spotlight Ben & Cat were young during a horrible tragedy in Cat's life at around age of 8 she has been caught in her family's house that had burned completely down during the night, horribly scared and in horrific pain that night. As the heir, Ben's Father had gotten him up to take him with him to try to start teaching him something about being a Lord. Something connected between the 2 young children, each affected by the other 's being and then 10 years later, Cat had scars inside her psyche that made her see her own self as way ugly and Ben, who had been flighty and freewheeling needed her to keep his emotional being and mind on a balanced nature. The star knock off is because it is hard to realize for me, that 'real' people would actually just take off for a 2 to 3 year trip or have a family member dying that they want to introduce the person they love, and they just get so something they do leave in that trip and DON'T introduce person to loved family member. Other than that, Charlotte Stone has done a very teary eyed at moments (yes I have to admit to having some years falling, and that isn't an usual thing ) an excellent job in telling the inner demons that plague a person whose emotional scars about her outer scars are huge more than her fading scars except we are also shown the cruelty and small mindness of just social people in general. Read it, have something to dry some tears and find out the rest of Cat & Ben's story.
