My name is Frank Butcher, and evidently when you save the world, it comes back for seconds. After I stopped a world ending apocalypse, my allies tried to cut open my chest with an axe. Kind of messed up, if you ask me. Thankfully, I've got a chance to return the favor. And I'm going to take it. Not because they're trying to magically reshape the natural laws that govern our planet. No, I'm doing this because trying to cut out my heart is not okay.
When New York Times Bestselling author, J. A. Cipriano was in second grade, his teacher gave everyone in class a journal to write down whatever they wanted. Their first subject was to write about something they didn’t like. J. A. chose to write about why he didn’t like writing. His reasoning was simple. He had bad handwriting. Even then, he was destined to be an engineer due to his messy scrawl.
Unfortunately, he found through the course of this little adventure that he actually liked writing. That year was sort of the high point for his writing career because he won a writing contest for the state. He got to go to a big dinner and his teacher was all dressed up.
He kept writing little stories, year after year, and in sixth grade, won another contest. In seventh grade, he broke his arm and got the cast signed by both Dean Koontz and Stan Lee. It is, by far, the coolest cast he’s owned. That was about the time he found video games and anime. His writing turned mostly toward fanfiction until about ninth grade when he wrote his first novel, a small book about twenty thousand words called Revelations. In sophomore year, he wrote two more books to complete the trilogy because he saw Star Wars that year and learned trilogies were the cool thing to do.
He rewrote Revelations during his senior year, and his wife swears it is the best thing he’s written. J.A. is not so sure. Every time he reads it, he cringes, but then again, he hates everything he writes, so there is that.
It was about that time, he got heavily involved in a fanfiction writing group, but that isn’t one hundred percent accurate. It was a world based on a popular anime but everything was created especially for this world. It made it so that every story someone wrote was unique.
Imagine writing a Star Wars novel set 1,000 years after A New Hope, where everything that happened was a distant memory and you get the idea. You have the force, some distant memories of the past, and that’s pretty much it.
He wrote about a million words (863K to be exact) for them before he decided to do his own thing. He wrote another novel. He put it in a drawer. He wrote another one that eventually became the basis for The Hatter is Mad. His next novel was Kill It With Magic, his first real novel. It’s not bad, but it’s bumpy. This is unfortunate because the books get loads better as the series progresses.
Since then, he’s written six more novels, four of which are in the Lillim Callina Series, and one in the Abby Banks series. The other is stuck in a drawer for time undetermined. He’s writing his next book now which is about werewolves fighting mummies in Ancient Egypt. After that, he will move onto Abby Banks 2. The Spy Within will come out in June or July.
J.A. also has three chinchillas. Two of them are grey, and because of this, they are named Slate and Cadmium. The third is named Jet because he’s black, and Jet is old English for black. See, creative. He also has a cat named Turtle. This does pose problems for his two-year-old from time to time.
After an epic finale we would have thought things are about to settle down. But no such luck. Yet another person develops a God complex - and decides to (re)shape the world.
We get to see more of the world of magic, more of the world of anti-magic, and also more of... other worlds.
Return of Frank Butcher, an overly optimistic magic-nullifier, is like seeing an old friend again.
Written in the same style of witty humor we expect from J.A. Cipriano, and narrated very well, again, by Joe Hempel.
Decision whether to get the book or not is a no-brainer. You will like everything you liked in the first book, plus something more.
Sadly, no way to describe what without spoilers, but but that should be all the more motivation to read it.
Feet of Clay (Clans of Shadow #2) by J.A. Cipriano is so much better than the first book and I loved the first one too. This one had more humor, more creatures, more action, just more...WOW! The surprise factor of when something crazy would happen or something snarky would be said was fun too. Traveling with a giant golem with a two year old temper was funny also. This book had lots going for it and I LOVED it. If you haven't read book one, the author catches you up right away so you won't be lost. Jump right in and enjoy the fun.
The further adventures of Frank Butcher & la Corazon is a fun book to read. Frank was reluctantly drawn into a war of magic proportions after delivering a package to a cancer clinic. In the first book of this series, we learn that Frank isn't too ambitious, but loves sci-fi movies/TV shows. After being injured by a magical explosion, Frank becomes "the Bearer" and the adventure begins!
The book is full of wizards, sorcerers, sorceresses, a Rabbi & a Golem. Loads of references to mythology & a few sci-fi references; I missed Frank's snarkiness from the first book, but still enjoyed this one.
I was given an Audiobook version of this book by the narrator & chose to review it. The narration was spot-on & Frank's voice & demeanor were just as I had imagined them. Either reading the book as a "real" book or listening to the book are equally entertaining.
This is an entertaining, action packed story that continues on from where book one left off. Frank Butcher is the same humorous, snarky person we fell in love with in the first story but this time he is a bit more prepared for the battles and trials thrown at him. This book has plenty of action, thrills, intrigue and some really surprising twists. The narrator does an excellent job of the audiobook; he shows Butcher's sarcastic humour very well and bring the characters and action in the story to life. Lives are at risk, hearts might be broken, battles are fought and the worlds continued existence becomes seriously in doubt, in this thrilling instalment of the Clan of the Shadows. I can not wait to find out where this story will lead next.
This one was like the first one, still can't fully click with the main character, and it was a bit too oer the top at times for my taste. Only three stars instead of 3,5 as the romance plot got bigger and not better... Still one more to go as I bought a set of three books, and it isn't so bad I won't keep reading. Entertaining enough, and aside from the characters traits the books voice was is smooth enough.
Note: This is Book 2 of the series and it works best if you’ve already read Book 1, Heart of Gold.
Frank Butcher used to be a package delivery man but events nearly killed him and Dr. Gabrielle Perez placed a magical artifact, a heart of gold, in his chest to keep him going. The mayhem didn’t stop there and Gabrielle’s son Max was stolen by a group of murdering magic users. Now Frank and Gabrielle are trying to get him back and save the world along the way.
The Golem we met in Book 1 gets a bigger role in this book and I’m glad to see his character growing (hardening? setting up? baked?). Abner (who Frank annoys by calling Aby) saves the day once or twice. Also some of the bad guys from Book 1 get more depth in this book. Tabitha, who Frank likes to annoy by calling Tabi, has a bit more going on than I initially expected. In fact, there’s this pretty emotional scene between her and Frank where Frank gets some much needed answers but then things get messy.
There’s still some sparks between Gabrielle (who Frank annoys by calling Gabby) but she’s caught up with figuring out how to get Max back so romance is put on the back burner. Speaking of Max, he’s got some special power that the head of this murdering band of sorcerers wants to put to bad use. We get a glimpse of Max but we still haven’t rightfully met him. He’s basically an object to quest for or fight over right now.
The head of this unscrupulous group of child stealers is named something mellow like Virgil or Cecil or Liam or such. I keep picture him sipping tea and concealing a dagger behind his back. He definitely needs to be taken down!
Frank has the same humor as in Book 1 but here it’s put to better use. I didn’t tire of it as I did in Book 1. I like all the movie references. The heavier scenes definitely balanced out all of Frank’s throw away comments and quips.
The action rolls on through this book, it never being a dull moment. Looking forward to Book 3.

The Narration: Joe Hempel was great with this book. He’s so good at playing Frank. I also like his voice for Gabrielle, it being feminine, and carrying the right mix of emotions depending on the scene. His voice for Abner is great as well.
An entertaining and enjoyable addition to the series. I was really looking forward to this book and was not disappointed.
The story starts out full force, hits the ground running and never slows down. It pulls you immediately, never lets go for a minute and is over before you realize you've been listening for 5 1/2 hours. Even though it's a shorter story it's well written, flows smoothly and is packed full of non-stop action, suspense, humor, betrayal, interesting creatures, intrigue, magic and just plain fun.
This is not a series you can just jump right into to. This story picks up where the first one ended. If you have not read the first book in the series you will be lost for a while. (and missing out) It's an all around entertaining series and is worth your time and credits to start at the beginning.
Momma Butcher didn't raise a quitter. No matter what is thrown at him Frank Butcher is going to find a way.
Be warned. There is a cliffhanger.
Once again Joe Hempel does a great job with the narration. Nice voice. Easy to listen to for hours at a time. Clearly spoken with a nice pace. Really good character voices. Perfect tone and delivery of the snarky sarcastic humor. He was able to bring the story and characters to life through his narration. Very enjoyable
I was provided this free review copy audiobook at my request and voluntarily left this review.
I listened to this story as part of an audiobook omnibus that contained all three stories. This second book was my favorite! It continued the story and the characters started really coming into their own.
I love when I can get three stories for the price of one! This is a great value at one credit. Three books, over 16 hours, and an entire series to dig my teeth into. This one is action packed to the extreme! This series has espionage, magic, romance (not a lot), and lots happening. It is a ride that doesn't stop once it gets started. Unlike some reviewers, I loved the irreverence and language. It made the story and characters feel more authentic.
I also quite enjoyed the narration on this one. I have never listened to Joe Hempel before, but his narration was right on point. He added so much energy to the story! The voices and character building he did were superb and consistent. The pacing was right on point, though I did speed up the narration a little because I am accustomed to listening at 1.75x speed. It wasn't necessary to go that fast with him, though "normal" 1x speed now seems like a snail's pace to me. I would highly recommend this omnibus and this narrator.
I received a free copy of this audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left my honest review. The free copy did not influence my review in any way.
Feet of Clay picks up where Heart of Gold leaves off, and it picks up the same campy humor, sarcastic one-liners, and high stakes action. If you enjoyed Heart of Gold then you will likely enjoy this book as well.
While I enjoyed both books, I do feel that the plot - fighting to rescue the beautiful Doctor's son - is mainly just being recycled, and from the end of this book, it seems book three will also. This makes me a bit reluctant to continue with this series. Do we really need ANOTHER book of them fighting the same fight against overwhelming odds to rescue the boy? Can we get a new carrot to dangle for book 4?
Joe Hempel once again does an amazing job narrating this story. He does an excellent job voice acting and bringing the characters to life and breathing personalities into each one of them. His superb job narrating this book probably kept me more invested in the story than the plot did.

"Packed with Action!" What did you love best about Clans of Shadow Omnibus? the humor, Frank Butcher has a wry, witty or sarcastic comment for every occasion.
Who was your favorite character and why? Frank, his willingness to do what's right, put himself in harms way & insult the bad guys while doing it was very entertaining.
Have you listened to any of Joe Hempel’s other performances before? How does this one compare? I don't think I have listened to any other books narrated by Joe Hempel before. He did a very good job with the narration. I could always tell which character was speaking & the emotion & humor shone thru.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you? there were several, when Frank went to heaven & the last battle scene were the top 2.
Any additional comments? I was very glad to have all 3 books in this trilogy in one go, because book 2 ended with a HUGE cliffhanger & it was very nice to not have to wait.

I listened to the book through audible. This book is amazing!!! I absolutely love Frank, there were many times I actually laughed out loud with things that Frank has said or done. He is the kind of character that you wish was a real person and you wish you knew him. I can't wait to start listening to the next book to see what happens next in his adventures especially with what happened in the last few chapters, which blew me away!!
The storyline… OMG!!! So much action and thrills throughout this book not to mention the surprises that are thrown at you! You are seriously kept on the edge of your seat the whole time, dying to know what is going to happen next, I couldn't stop listening to this amazing, heart pounding roller coaster of a tale!!!
This book is an outstanding piece of literature and I can't rate it highly enough!!! People reading this review need to rush out and get a copy!!!!
This trilogy has been a treat (except for the cliffhangers). Unexpected allies and foes. Allies who become foes and vice versa. Some you kind of suspect and some you hope you're wrong. Many twists and turns and unexpected scenes. As the story grows and develops, new characters are introduced. Our main cast grows and develops and stays true to how we met that, adding evolution with the events. Emotions are charged as loved ones are threatened in a believable narrative, not over the top, yet not glossing beyond. Joe Hempel IS Frank Butcher, a living, breathing voice who makes you think "read faster, Faster, FASTER, dammit" to find out what's going to happen next. Looking forward to the conclusion of this exciting trickery and treachery tale - and hoping Butcher pops up again in more stand alones!
My review is based on the Audiobook. Feet of Clay begins right where Book One's cliffhanger left off. Frank Butcher is a little less arrogant in this book but he is still very nerdy, funny and relatable. He is just an a average guy who gets thrown into a supernatural world and at the end of the day he is just trying to do what's right. Joe Hempel brings Frank and the rest of the characters to life with his fantastic narration. I am not sure if I would enjoy Frank as much if I were just reading the book. His personality comes through loud and clear the way this narrator reads him. I am looking forward to book 3 :)
I still love Frank and all his wonderful attitude. I feel sorry for the guy with everything that has happened to him and all the surprises that pop up, but it's highly entertaining for me so I can't help but laugh at a lot of it. Joe sounds awesome reading again and brings so much character to the story that you just can't get from words on a page. This is awesome to listen to, but I wouldn't let someone under the age of 14 or 15 listen to it. If you love DeadPool or anyone with that kind of attitude I would definitely bet you will enjoy this series.
My first read from author J.A. Cipriano was so good I went right into my second read by him. I've now read/listened to several books by him and loved every one Outstanding read. So good I can't wait to delve into the final book in this series. I there was any flaw in the writing it would be the over-the-top/excessive use of the word f**k. This is only the second time I've ever objected to language in a book in one of my reviews, but it's deserved.
Not a bad book but not a fantastic follow up to the first.
This is very much a sequel meant to bridge first and last act and the lack of story progress that isn't an obivous retread of the first book with the black, grey and white hats swapped around by the actors being mostly fillers of battles that almost always get resolved by a deus ex machina.
I read it because I wanted to give the first one a chance to fincih well.
Another cliffy (whines)" Dang it another cliffhanger. This is addictive, I can't wait for the next part. This audiobook was given to me for free at my request from the publisher, author or narrator and I provided this voluntary review.
With the first book ending in a cliffhanger, this second book started up right where the first one left off. While I really liked the first book, I found this one more enjoyable because I found Frank a little less arrogant and more fun in this book; he almost came off too arrogant in the first one. As with the first, this book was well-written and full of non-stop action with Frank getting used to having an artificial, magic-cancelling heart and being more comfortable with the world of magic. The only thing I’m still having an issue with is the villains not being more clear-cut. This in no way detracts from the book, but I would like to have more of an idea on who is a villain and who is a hero. I am so excited to see what happens next as this one ended on a big cliffhanger. If you like fun, fast, and action-filled urban fantasy, give this book a try. You won’t regret it! Highly recommend!
Thanks to the author for the free e-book in exchange for an honest review. This same review will be posted on both Goodreads and Amazon.
Poor old Frank, out of the frying pan and into the fire! Frank is great, so much fun to read about as he wings it through disaster after calamity. Adventure packed with plenty of gun fights and magical battles. A good choice for fans of fantasy without the gooey stuff (unless you're talking blown up goo). *This was an ARC, my opinions are my own.*
