Miles

Rate this book
A student chapbook of free verse, fiction, and prose poetry from St. Andrews Presbyterian College.

"Miles is that rare creation--a lyrical vision that is completely new and unfettered by traditional expectations of form or even intent. Johnson's world is one all of us will recognize, but her view of it and her method of expression are at once both unique and oddly familiar--an experience similar to that of hearing a melody for the first time that you know--impossibly--you've always known." -John Williamson-

Johnson takes the sound advice of poets such as T. S. Eliot in her approach to poetry: every word is painstakingly exact. She slices open her subjects like a surgeon with breathtaking precision, says what she has to say, and then purposefully refuses to sew up the wound. The variety of forms in Miles is refreshing, and they are splendidly cohesive, tied together by Johnson's distinct voice. This book makes for a great read for a variety of people, included (but not limited to) the well-traveled, the well-versed, and well-grounded.

Cate Johnson's first book--especially her spare and lovely "Postcards" section--provides a wonderful roadmap across America and through the peaks and valleys of both yearning and fulfillment. I only wish there was a single picture postcard worthy of this book.
