The Medlov Men #2

Gabriel's Regret: Book One

Rate this book
Gabriel Medlov has lived two very different lives in his 30 years on this earth, mostly because of his very different parents & paths.

Gabriel’s mother, Emma Hutton, was born into British royalty with billions of dollars, but after her mother married the rugged Russian mobster, Dmitry Medlov, and gave him her inheritance, she denounced her family and became a freedom fighter, spending most of her life in the trenches of third-world countries fighting for the oppressed until her untimely death.

Gabriel’s father, Ivan Medlov, was a lot less selfless - a reputed Russian crime boss, the brother of Dmitry Medlov, and a rabid sociopath, he spent his life running guns, women and drugs until his nephew, Anatoly Medlov, murdered him.

With parents on two far extremes of the spectrum of good and evil, Gabriel was born right in the middle and spent most of his life as a second-string beta. Until now. After a series of bad events, the brooding, six-foot-nine, black-haired, blue-eyed, safe bet is on the verge of self-actualization or self-destruction, only he doesn’t know it.

All Gabriel does know is that his normally level-headed thinking and cool exterior are starting to give way to a much more violent and vocal monster that may or may not have been lurking below the surface for many years.

After a major fall-out with his live-in girlfriend in front of the entire family, Gabriel is sent from the palatial confines of the Medlov compound to the war-torn country of Ukraine to oversee a large munitions deal worth millions of dollars that he and his cousin tanked a few days before. For Gabriel, this trip is a test to determine what kind of man he is turning into, for everyone else it’s a rest from an ongoing domestic squabble.

When Gabriel arrives in the Ukraine, he is met by militia who are fighting a regional war on an international stage. As Russia shifts its focus to Syria, its military forces are being pulled out of the Ukraine. This allows for a very small opportunity to take back part of the ruptured city of Donetsk, but they can’t do it without his guns. Ready to business as usual and get back to the states, Gabriel is transported and introduced to the head of the militia – Valeriya Nenya.

The music stops. The world stops. Gabriel’s heart stops. Who is this black woman and how did she just still his heart?

Born into a life of poverty and hate, Valeriya Nenya, is no princess. She is, however, fighting not only against the Russians who want to come in and take over her country but also Neo-Nazi separatists who have been terrorizing the country from within for years. With access of munitions and other aide cut off by the outside world, Gabriel Medlov and the Medlov Crime Family becomes Valeriya’s only hope to winning this war.

Deciding to stay a few days in Ukraine to gain Valeriya’s favor, Gabriel is forced to imbed with the militia until he can convince Valeriya and her money contacts that the Medlov Family is the right fit for their fight. While he is there, he is forced to see the world from a very different lens. Third world poverty, extreme racism, violence and starvation take on a whole new meaning as he discovers what Valeriya is fighting against. He also, for the first time, sees what his mother died fighting for. Only, with his father’s blood and his family’s trade, Gabriel discovers what he was possibly made to do and the movement and woman who will shift him from being a beta in the world of Medlov to an Alpha in a world of regret. But at what cost does this epiphany cost?

Gabriel's Regret is a quick read that I wish had been longer. I have to confess that I am a fan of the Medlov men and tend to give a bit of slack to negative issues found in this book because of that. There were lots of editing hiccups, the main couple do not actually meet until about 45% into the story, there is some major insta love, and there's a big cliffhanger at the end. All of these problems tend to be deal breakers that keep me from enjoying a book.

For me, Gabriel's Regret felt more like a suspense story with romantic elements and not so much like a romance. If I had gone into this one knowing that I was getting romantic suspense I would have been better prepared to get lots of background and build up of outside conflict. I would not have expected the focus to be on the love affair between Gabriel and Valeriya. I'm hoping that book two will focus more on Gabriel and Valeriya to give the story a romance feel. I understand the need for the build up that Welch gives us, but I think that I fell into the bad reader habit of expecting an author to give me something similar to what I've experienced before in her writing. (Bad Monica!)

The change in the way Welch is telling Gabriel's story is different from the romantic pacing that we find in the The Medlov Crime Family series. The sudden change in the story set up isn't necessarily bad, just unexpected. Gabriel is still struggling to find his place among the Medlov men's dominance in their aggressive and dangerous world. Gabriel is experiencing the poor little rich boy syndrome. He hasn't experienced the same degree of hardships as Dmitry or even Anatoly, making him feel the need to prove himself worthy of being a Medlov. His personal life is in shambles as his relationship with Briggy is imploding. Now that he has finally decided to leave her he finds that leaving isn't going to be as easy as he had hoped. When a large business mistake shakes up his world, he has to make decisions that will affect many more lives than just his own. As always, Dmitry doesn't care how or why mistakes have happened, he wants his money and his reputation to stay intact at all costs. Therefore, Gabriel and Anatoly are responsible for making things right.

While trying to make amends for their mistake, Gabriel and Anatoly end up in Ukraine where Gabriel finds what he's been looking for all along in Valeriya. Valeriya is a young black freedom fighter, who wants to see a Ukraine free of Russian and Neo Nazi influences that have stepped into the power vacuum in her war torn country. The reader knows that Valeriya is the daughter of immigrants who owned and ran a small hotel in Ukraine, but we never find out where they immigrated from. It's a small detail, but one that would have better filled in my idea of who Valeriya is. Since this story has been split into two parts, it would have been good to get more background information on Valeriya and her family.

I also had issues with the ending of this book. The cliffhanger was so jarring that it threw me for a loop. I didn't know that this would be a two part story. I'm probably being generous by giving this one three stars, but I'm not going to lie to myself. I know that I'll be grabbing the next book when it comes out because I need to know how this plays out. And again, I love me some Medlovs. We all have our book weaknesses and this series is one of mine, so I'll be hanging on for at least one more installment.

Major mistakes are made with a deal and the Czar, Dmitry ain't HAPPY at all! Money and family makes him happy not mistakes when Gabriel and Anatoly chooses not to listen. Dmitry rant to them was not as a uncle or father, No DMITRY WAS IN BOSS MODE... DEADLY BOSS MODE!

In "Gabriel's Regret", the reader was given Gabriel's origins with his distant mom, Emma Hutton and his mobster sociopath father, Ivan Medlov. Also we got to see Gabriel's point of view of Briggy and it wasn't a good one but detailed all the better!

Gabriel is a beta male but he's coming into his own . .. gradually but he truly needs an independent woman like Royal or Renee... and finds his completeness in Valeriya no longer Briggi who throws insults to injury and says Anatoly's name in bed while dreaming...!!! No, Gabriel is not without fault in his relationship with Briggy because he did royally cheat on her and made promises of a future with her. Now with Briggy's pregnancy, she's seems to be milking it with Gabriel but the tension is toxic, no doubt! Then in Ukraine, Gabriel mets Valeriya... and it's all good for them both... but still I'm left wondering about Briggy's plans in Memphis with the family!

Although book 1, is not my favorite in this series, this was still a really good read... I just wasn't expecting the cliffy! I HATE CLIFFHANGERS!

I have to say I don't care for cliffhangers but I do understand why authors do them to keep readers wanting more but I can't stand them. My thoughts on this book were it was a quick read and there was a lot of back and forth going between Gabriel and Briggy . It was like she was trying to make Briggy a villain and it didn't work for me. But I do like the fact that Gabriel found his soulmate he needed a strong woman and he got it with Valeriya. On a side note I love that name Valeriya its crazy complicated and freaking awesome!!! I have mix feelings about this book I loved it and I hated it. Will I read the part two of course I have hope that part 2 will bring everything together and make "Gabriel's Regret" a pretty epic story.

I love this series but I just finished reading Gabriel's story and I have to say I was disappointed. The book only got exciting for me when I had got 70% into the book. Too much politics and not enough action and romance or time spent with the couple. Too much Briggy drama. That lady really needs to go. I would rate it 3.5. The book was long and boring in places and not as dramatic as past reads. I am sad she made it into a 2 part story and left us hanging with a cliffhanger, I am sure it could have just been one book. Just my view. I feel something was missing and it was a disappointing read for me. Sorry! :(

Latrivia...girl, once again you did the Damn Thang on this installment of the SEXY as F$#K Medlov Men. Gabriel definitely comes into his own once he meets Valeryia. I just loved the vulnerability that you allowed this BOSS to show. The love scenes were smokin' HOT! But, you know that you're wrong for leaving this one in a cliffhanger. BOOK 2 can not come out fast enough. I just gotta know what happens next!

What a ride

The Medlovs are back and I realized I missed them. This book was a page Turner it has the right amount of romance, suspense and kick butt action. I love how Mrs.Welch gave us a recap of the family history I needed that because it has been a while since I read the previous installments, but she put the backstory in perfectly. 5 stars

I Regret Nothing!

Well, except that the book ended before in was ready. Once again a masterful job by Latrivia Welch in bringing us into the Medlov world. Gabriel has been a favorite of maintenance he was first introduced. I love how he is evolving and reconciling the different parts of himself. He is coming into his own as an Alpha male and a Medlov male.

Briggy is still annoying the hell out of me and won't let go of the Medlov men and move on with her life. Her pregnancy is a surprise but she best be careful threatening Gabriel with his child. I think she forgot who Royal was for a moment. But in classic style Royal reminded her and the reader.

Royal and Dmitry are still the baddest power couple ever and run a tight ship. Only Royal could settle the unrest in her home and did so with class and elegance.

Anatoly is still Anatoly and Renee loves her Ana just the way he is. He has come to car for Gabriel like a brother and sometimes forgets Gabriel did not grow up knowing who he was and the Vor was about.

The ending shocked me and left me cheering. Yuri and Olek have called for death's emissary and nothing and no one will be the same. I can't wait for Book 2!!!

Gabriel, the lovely mess of the Medlov family!

I have been waiting and waiting AND WAITING for this book and finally it's here and it was delicious! Oh Gabriel, is such a lovely mess. Every since we were 1st introduced to him all those books ago, he seemed like he was always trying to fit in with the Medlov men and we never really got to see him,now we do. Gabriel and Valeriya's relationship was as complex as it gets but you still understand why it worked, why they fell in love and why this is way different than his relationship with Briggy. While, I do feel bad for Briggy, I never believed in her love for Gabriel or even Anatoly, I always believe she wanted the head man,Dmitry and just settled for any Medlov man that would have her. I don't really like how Gabriel treated her either, all the cheating,I get his reasons but it was still wrong and their relationship couldn't end fast enough for me. As for this story it was wonderfully written, the high drama and fear of living and fighting in a war torn country, gave me chills.I love the new characters and of course the classic characters from books past, Anatoly,my fav! I can't wait for part 2!

It was good... although not as good as the other books. No chemistry can top that of Dmirty and royal from the previous book. I can't say Gabriel and V had that much chemistry in the first place. The only thing that I was really excited about was the new development with Dmitry. I look forward to how that would be explored in the books to come.

This really didn’t get good until the very end so I’m really debating on reading anything else from the author. It was boring overall and the only reason that I kept going was because I’ve read the series and thought this one would be a great read since it’s been so long since the last book but I have to say without the ending I would Never read another one.

The ending is what really pulls you in because you want to see the Medlov’s really step up and get dirty. Gabriel came off as confused and having a pity party about his life the entire read. When he got to the Ukraine nothing was really going on but it did give him some character outside of just being bland. If the author takes months to put out the next one I’m so over this series and the author because so far it just reminds me of Roxie Riveria series that drags out for years with nothing getting resolved before another one comes out. Hopefully it won’t be a long wait and we can see what the guys are all about.

The book was all over the place… making Briggy the villain for plot convenience just to oust her out of the story so Gabriel could get himself a strong woman to me wasn't executed properly it was annoying. They all suddenly went from loving Briggy and considering her family to hating her? I didn’t buy that she was still in love with Antonly that was ridiculous. Royal was annoying as usual. Dimitry was cool but the scene of him cutting Gabriel down to nothing seemed a bit left field it seemed like the plot was trying to emasculate and embarrass Gabriel as a way to teach him to be a real vor. The scenes were other characters were talking behind his back like he wasn’t upto par with everyone else were also jarring. Personally I'm not a fan of book one will see what book 2 has in store. They behaved less like a badass mafia family and more like bitchy, vindictive and petty family.

OMG

I knew this was going to be good and Me Welch did not disappoint. I was never a fan of the Briggy/Gabriel union, so I'm really hoping that something great comes of Valeriya and Gabriel.
Right now though Gabriel is in a very bad situation and it looks like Dmitry will be flying in with guns blazing. As he said, "....his boy."
Definitely looking forward to the next part of this story.
Will Gabriel be safely recused? Will he and Valeriya come back to the States? Will Gabriel actually take over leading the new Munitions operation? What the He'll is going to happen to Bright and that Baby? Speaking of babies, is Valeriya pregnant? Ooooh, I can't wait to read more.

Getting to know Gabriel has been very interesting . He is finally accepting that he is his father's son, but much better as a person and not psychotic .

Gabriel is growing and coming into his own

But that dang Briggy would make a saint want to choke the mess out of her. She was the biggest cause of Gabriel searching deep into himself as to who he really was in life and what he wanted out of life. Her attitude and change caused him to resent her and the bombshell she dropped on him had him second-guessing his decisions and caused him to mess up a business deal with the Ukrainians. Had he not tried to correct his mistake, he would have never met the love of his life. He knew instantly knew that Valeriya was whom he was destined to be his forever life. Valeriya, on the other hand, fought her instant attraction for Gabriel as she was in the midst of a war for freedom. Her destiny was to be a freedom fighter and to avenge the death of her brother Alexei. Gabriel comes to the realization that Valeriya is his mother Emma and he is his father, Ivan. It's strange how life tends to repeat itself.

Just like there are cultural and racial prejudices here in the U.S. those same prejudices occur in the Ukraine. Valeriya has to fight against those prejudices to prove her worth. But that good ole boys network is determined to get rid of her. Gabriel is determined to help in any way possible, even to the point of sacrificing their lives for each other. The ambush turned everyone's life upside down. Nadei has failed in protecting his boss but he is determined to protect the woman his boss loves. Not only does Nadei have to face the wrath of Dmitry the "Butcher" and Anatoly for his failure but the entire Ukrainian war front be it the government, the Nazis, or the resistance. The Butcher will burn all of East Europe down to get his nephew back and he doesn't care how much it costs him. He will teach the world not to ever mess with the Medlov family. He learned that lesson with Anya's kidnaping.

I can't wait to read book two.

NOTE: update after re-reading 14 August 2024. It has been years since I first read this book in the series. It reminded me of how torn Gabriel is with his soul searching on how he was raised and how he resented his being left alone to practically raise himself with the help of "the help." He craves love and family. Dmitry, Royal, and Anatoly have welcomed him into the family. But Brigitte has changed so much that she makes it hard for anyone to even consider why she behaves the way she does. She's still hung up on Anatoly and Gabriel has had enough of her and so has everyone in the family.

I just love this series and wish that Latrivia would get back into writing again. I miss her talents so much.

I have rocked with this author for so long. I can still remember reading Dmitry's Closet and being blown away.

I remember thinking....

IMO you should read all 4 of the Medlov Crime Family books before starting this book.
Any fan of the Medlov crime family books has been waiting for Gabriel's story to be told. (Especially those in her FB fan group) The man are delicious and completely dangerous. The women are strong and down for their men. Case in point Royal (the OG that started it all)

In comes Valeriya. Can we just marinate on her name for a second. Truly the name of a Valkyrie. (And Conan the Barbarian's first love)

I love how the author incorporated Valeriya's struggle (which is also her brother's and a group of others as well) as a Black woman in a European country. Gabriel is in a slump with his love life. Meaning he knows what he wants (a strong woman like Royal and Renee) and he knows his current partner Briggy is NOT that. Cue Valeriya and cue the political unrest that Gabriel is delivering guns into.

I am so glad part 2 drops in two days because you can't leave me hanging the way she did.

I'd been waiting for this book for a while and it didn't disappoint. I like Valeriya and she makes a good soulmate for Gabriel. And although I felt their "you're my true love" romance aspect was a bit rushed, I did enjoy it. Was nice to see Anatoly/Renee and Dmitry/Royal again.

I want to see how part two plays out before giving a more detailed review but I did really enjoy the first installment in Gabriel and Valeriya's story.

WOW!!

I am just speechless right now because I've just been given my heart's desire. When I started reading about this family ,the men who made up this family and the women who love them I was completely sold.I had thought to give up hope of ever getting another story. This was such a special story and I am glad that it starts with Gabriel.Since Gabriel's introduction into the Medlov family he has not been a full participant. This was not only about the making of a man but one looking for a missing piece. This story not only leaves you on the edge but it holds you till the end and still you want more. This was also typical Medlov man ,I came I saw and I refuse to be conquered.Just such a really excellent way to bring your readers back into the fold.

This book falls between a 3.5 - 4 for me. I had mix feelings about this book, there were things I loved and I hated. I loved that Gabriel seems to have found his soul mate in Valeriya. Valeriya is strong but dealing with lots of turmoil and inner struggles just like Gabriel. I enjoyed the action and suspense and wondering how this will change Gabriel. I hate cliffhangers and waiting a long time for the next book. There was a lot of drama with Briggy I could have lived without and wished Gabriel and or Royal would have said something to Briggy when they noticed she changed. I also have mixed feelings about Royals new venture and hope to see more excitement with that situation.

I am so excited that there is so much more to Gabriel's story that it needs a second book. I can't wait until it's release. Great addition to the Medlov series.
