This collection of essays does not aim to illustrate a prefabricated theory of art, but rather follows the impulses given by artworks themselves. Philosopher and art critic Boris Groys writes about significant works and artists over the last century that have pushed his thinking in new directions. His compelling arguments do not try to replace the singular content or message of an artwork. About the author

Boris Efimovich Groys (born 19 March 1947) is an art critic, media theorist, and philosopher. He is currently a Global Distinguished Professor of Russian and Slavic Studies at New York University and Senior Research Fellow at the Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design in Karlsruhe, Germany. He has been a professor of Aesthetics, Art History, and Media Theory at the Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design/Center for Art and Media in Karlsruhe and an internationally acclaimed Professor at a number of universities in the United States and Europe, including the University of Pennsylvania, the University of Southern California and the Courtauld Institute of Art London.

Dropped the book after 3-4 essays. I get a feeling that this famous author reached a point when he can just say whatever and everybody will applause. There are some interesting paragraphs here and there, but you have to do better than that for what is supposed to be original takes on really basic stuff like Kandinsky's teachings, Duchamp's ready-mades and Manzoni's poop. Really? Is there nothing else to talk about? Groys also manages to insert a quote from Kierkegaard in almost every piece for some reason, which is groundless and annoying.

если индивидуально оценивать статьи, то их рейтинг для меня варьируется от одного до пяти. некоторые я нашла очень вдохновляющими на собственные размышления, несколько очень сильных и интересных тезисов я обдумываю каждый день. некоторые статьи из-за отсутствия интереса к определенным художникам у меня в памяти отметились темным пятном и отбивали желание читать дальше. метод написания текстов у гройса меня тоже несколько удивил / впечатлил, начинает он обычно очень близко к теме, а потом уходит так далеко, что связать с началом и определенными работами текст получается уже с трудом. на то он и философ, конечно, но мне хотелось большей конкретики, возможно детского описания и анализа, чтобы смысл текстов доходил до читателя (меня), включенного в современный художественный процесс, но только отчасти и блуждающего в этой включенности в поисках конкретных знаний. возможно это просто специфика современного искусства, его осмысление почему-то всегда сопровождается какой-то дымкой, вроде мысль есть, но понимается только на каком-то метафизическом уровне и только определенным людским срезом, в который попасть очень затруднительно / невозможно, если ты не мыслишь так же.
