When the assassin Galen is hired to capture a slaver rather than kill, he learns his target is more than she appears. The job takes him deeper into the Eban underworld as he tries to understand how he’s been used, and why his only friend in the city seems to know more than she should.
Surviving pits him against those with abilities far exceeding his own, and leads him to realize that he has been a part of a much larger game. For him to escape, he'll have to learn what role he has to play, if only he can discover why everyone wants to use him.
Set in the world of The Dark Ability and The Shadow Accords
I downloaded The Binder's Game as a free book from Amazon. Interesting world-building and characters make this unusual plot a really good read. While not a fast-paced read, it was steady and built to a surprising ending (some threads are left open, so there's sure to be another book to come). Galen was a bit of a disappointment, because of how easily he was manipulated through the whole book, but the twists and turns kept me reading.
I had to keep reminding myself while reading that this was a male lead character. This was surprising considering that the author is male. I just felt that I was reading from a female's perspective. I also did not care for the main character constantly getting into tricky situations due to his own ineptitude. And, every author has a phrase that they like to use regularly, but "a smile played at their lips" 3 times in 3 pages is a bit much for me.
Solid plot, characters, and world building. But like some of his other work that I've read, he gets very repetitive about the little details. Seriously, how many times does he need to tell us the properties of two types of poison the MC uses all the time? This one was slightly difficult to finish, but i'm still considering reading book two.
Book 1 was a fun read and had errors throughout. The character and plot developed well. I enjoyed learning of other characters of the forgotten, even if his story was not told in full, only hints of why he was banished and him time with the healer. I look forward to book 2.
To be an assassin and live the life of working for someone telling you who to kill. To be very good means you are a good killer. Do you have friends? Do you trust anyone? No! Strange people arrive in town, what is going on? A good storytelling read.
Galen is an assassin, whom takes jobs from a questionable guy; when several prostitutes are assaulted- he begins an odyssey to find out why. This is such a wonderful story- strikingly real and nicely delivered. A great start.
Always enjoy this author. His clean content appeals to a wide audience making it appropriate for adults and youth alike. This series did not disappoint. A great read and a few characters brought in from other series so nicely ties in with the Shadow Accords and Collector series' books.
