White Trash Zombie #6

White Trash Zombie Unchained

Rate this book
Angel Crawford has finally pulled herself together (literally!) after her disastrous dismemberment on Mardi Gras. She’s putting the pieces of her life back in order and is ready to tackle whatever the future holds.

Too bad the future is a nasty bitch. There’s a new kind of zombie in mindless shamblers, infectious and ravenous.

With the threat of a full-blown shambler pandemic looming, and a loved one stricken, Angel and the “real” zombies scramble to find a cure. Yet when Angel uncovers the true reason the plague is spreading so quickly, she adds “no-holds-barred revenge” to her to-do list.

Angel is busting her ass dealing with shambling hordes, zombie gators, government jerks, and way too many mosquitos, but this white trash chick ain’t giving up.

Good thing, since the fate of the world is resting on her undead shoulders.

Make no mistake, when I rate this book, I'm rating it out of sheer enjoyment. It's total popcorn goodness. AND this particular book in the series is a bit more fun than all the rest. Or at least it just feels that way.

See those crocs on the cover? See that zombie handling them? Yeah?

I'm telling you. This is FUN. It could have taken a more generally funny turn, but it didn't. It's just pure UF goodness with a tribe of zombies eating brains in exchange for immortality, secret and not so secret facilities trying to use or destroy them for their immortality, and it does it with great characters.

Cure for zombies? No, way! Enslave zombies? No, way! Brains in chip format? Sure. Love and rot? Sure. High tech research, zombie crocs, a dreaded sociopathic foe? Sure! :)

I'm sorry, but this just tickles all my funny bones. :) Like raspberry ice cream. With BRAINS.

I had such a good time with this book! I am so glad that I happened upon this series because I have really grown to love Angel and the rest of the gang over the course of the series. I have been looking forward to listening to this book ever since it was released and it turned out to be just as good as I had hoped it would be.

This is the sixth book in the White Trash Zombie series which should really be read in order since each installment builds on the previous books. This book picks up shortly after the events of the last book. Angel is healed and working on getting her life back together. Unfortunately, some of the events from the past are still causing some problems. Big problems. It seems that the town is dealing with an epidemic outbreak of shamblers and the problem is quickly getting worse.

I love Angel. Her character has really grown over the course of the series and it has been a lot of fun to watch her figure out how she wants to live her life. Angel is incredibly smart and resourceful. She also cares deeply for her friends and the population in general and feels a responsibly to protect others. She even does really well when dealing with characters that are trying to be difficult because she is able to keep a focus on what is really important. I really enjoy being in her head as she tries to figure things out as much as I enjoy the action packed scenes.

Allison McLemore does a fantastic job with this whole series. I know that I liked this entire series a bit more because I decided to go the audio route. The narrator really takes this story to a new level. Angel really comes to life through the narration and I thought she did an equally good job with all of the other character voices. I think that the narrator was able to put a lot of emotion into the story and made things more exciting overall.

I would highly recommend this series to others. The entire series is just a whole lot of fun. I did feel like this book's ending felt a little more final than the previous installments but I have my fingers crossed that we will see more of Angel very soon.

Initial Thoughts
As I expected, I had a good time with this one. Angel is such a great character and it is just a lot of fun to spend time with her. The narration was excellent as always. This is definitely a series that should be read in order since a lot of events from previous books come into play in this installment. I thought that the end of the book felt just a little more final than usual but I am really hoping that there will be more of this series very soon.

Nothing like jumping into a series 6 in, but I did the swan dive right into the swamp didn’t feel like I was treading water to try and keep up. What do you know, I’ve discovered a series that is worth heading back to the beginning and really exploring this Rowland’s world building. I also have to ask myself, Why didn’t I start this series soon? Oh, yeah, I normally stay away from all things Zombie…but here I am enjoying the heck out of the snark, banter and Angel Crawford, zombie extraordinaire. I just want to thank all those fans that finally convinced me to take the plunge. That being said, I found it fun, fascinating and extremely entertaining. White Trash Zombie Unchained was nothing like I expected and a solid 4.5 stars read! Take it from an anti-zombie, urban fantasy fanatic, Rowland’s creativity, imagination and humor is something you really need to check out.

I received this copy of White Trash Zombie Unchained from Berkley Publishing Group - DAW. This is my honest and voluntary review.

This is a fine and very enjoyable conclusion to the White Trash Zombie series. Angel finds redemption for her sins, the other characters have their story-lines wrapped up nicely and find appropriate peace of one kind or another, and the world is saved appropriately... though there is some loss along the way. There are some nice new characters, and some old friends return, too. Angel's character development is quite well demonstrated, from her humble and somewhat ignoble introduction in the first book through to her final triumph in this one. The cover is even better, being an eye-catcher and yet more appropriate than previous ones. (Everything's better with zombie 'gators!) The one thing I did not like was that the Good Guys make the mistake that far too many literary Good Guys make, that of trusting the evil character who's proven herself time and time again to be pure evil and beyond any hope of redemption, as if she were going to suddenly be a little trustworthy. Never happens, the reader knows it's never going to happen, so why do so many of our heroes give them a second chance? Other than that, I enjoyed the book completely. (Everything's better with zombie 'gators!... oughta be a t-shirt.)

4.5 Sweet Baby Zombie Angel Grows Up
Angel, is walking that relationship line not knowing where things are going or not. Rotting away may have ruined her chance for love forever. Rotting flesh tends to muck love up, it's true. Let's stay on romance here for a minute. There was a scene that was all hopeful smoochy and then it went all Uuug Eeeerg uggggg and the moment was lost ! Way to kill a smexy moment Ms. Rowland.
There seems to be an outbreak of "B" movie zombie types all around town. The source of this new cheesy zombie might be Angel. These moaning shamblers are not reacting well to brains or other treatments, they are dying. Angel and her tribe of civilized zombie race for a cure, even if they must call on an enemy for help. Believe me when I tell you they called on the Bitchzilla Deluxe. HATE HER.
Angel is forced to step out of her comfy eating brain chips on the couch mode and go out and mess up, a little. She makes new friends, cold bloodied ones that almost steal the book from her. There is a scene where she swims in the swamp, ewww yuck. You know nothing good happened in those muddy waters. Bad, bad and more bad, piles onto the mountain of crap to deal with.
Omg this book was fun. The ending was most excellent. it was all cross. cross, cross dressing to the extreme. I was up on my feet cheering, it was so good. I'm chuckling now, thinking about it. Oh the next book, I can't wait.

Finally, yes finally, I had the opportunity to see what everyone was loving on. A scrappy Louisiana local girl turned zombie and her adventures told by a well-matched narrator certainly lived up to its rep. This was my kind of zombie story.

White Trash Zombie Unchained is book six in the White Trash Zombie urban fantasy series. I read it out of order and did alright, but I can most definitely see that these books build on each other and are best read/listened to in order.

The story opens with the heroine, Angel Crawford, just recovered from her last (un)deadly adventure just in time for another one. A new zombie strain has arrived affecting even the gators in the swamp and this brings an old nemesis back making a strange bedfellows situation. The new strain's epidemic must be stopped and the stakes are high to find a cure. So much isn't adding up and Angel and the other zombies have to figure it all out fast.

I took to Angel right from the beginning. She has a wry, homey, country girl humor. She's an every-gal sort of heroine trying to live down her past mistakes and move on. And, she is a scrappy one. I enjoyed seeing her stand up to the big shots when she felt she was right and she got in a few jabs when people got condescending toward her.

Side characters are numerous as its six books into the series now. I enjoyed all the camaraderie among the zombies and Angel's various and colorful circle of acquaintance and friends. It cracked me up that she works in the coroner's office as a zombie where bodies with fresh brains are a plenty.

I worried that I'd get squeamish since this is a zombie story, but it wasn't horrid at all. It was fun and exciting. There's a dire situation and mystery to solve and inter-personal relationships to enjoy. Its no more gruesome than the average urban fantasy. Zombie gators! What a hoot!

Allison McLemore narrated and whoa girl was she a fab fit. She nailed the southern, the genders, and the tempo of this story so well. I was riveted and well-settled with her narration from beginning to the end. In just one book, she established herself as the voices of the White Trash Zombie series.

All in all, a fantastic outing that will not be my last with the series. Like a good reader girl, I'll be catching up the backlist and progressing forward as a new fan. Urban Fantasy lovers, this ones a winner!

My thanks to Audible for the opportunity to listen to this book in exchange for an honest review.

So, I didn't know this book released. I stumbled onto it when looking for my next read. I love this author. She's super sweet with a great mind. To come up with all of this I applaud her.

I'll be the first to admit, for me, the first love interest introduced in a book or series has my full support. I'm not one for heroines "dating" around unless I go into it knowing that's going to happen. So for me, Marcus is number one.

With that said, I've held a sweet spot for Nick. That whole, I hate you but secretly love you is often romantic. Therefore, I wasn't at all upset when he became her next love interest. I wouldn't have had that same feeling for her zombie baby(ies).

But after everything to get these two together, when it happened it fell flat for me. There were no sparks, nothing. And what he admitted at the end of the book didn't give me butterflies. It was almost like the author threw it in to complete an romantic ARC.

Outside of the romance, which was like (1%) if that of the book, the UF story line was decent. There was one time when I felt like Angel gave Marcus a hard time and he in no way deserved it. She was a little self-righteous when she was anything but. So that annoyed me.

Other than that, it was a good read and the narration was fantastic as usual. Allison McLemore does an excellent job at bringing the characters to life.

All the story lines seem to be wrapped up. I'm not sure where this series will go in the future. I'll read it, but I'll admit, I'm not clamoring for the next book.

I used to love this series SO much... but lately it seems like they have lost that strength and agile narrative I liked so much...
This one in particular has to be the slowest ever. Here we find the aftermath of Angel's addiction to V12, seen in the previous book, which ended up with a killed mutated zombie thrown into the bayou. Now it seems that the epidemic with the mutated parasite is spreading, all due to some zombified gators.
Angel and the members of the Tribe are hands-on studying it to try and put and end to it before it spreads. But here is where things go sloooowly. They go to the bayou to get samples from the gators, they find one who is clearly infected - the other one is taken by their enemies -, and instead of making sure it's dead, they go away leaving it roaming free to bite more people... Don't get that one.
And how sloy the story is building up is another handicap for me. Looks like there is no action involved, no moving forward.

At 82% of the book I decided to drop it. I used to love this series, but as I've said they began to lose steam somewhere and I was pushing through this one out of how much I enjoyed them and out of respect for the author, but I just can't keep reading something that zombie walks more than moves through the pages. It seemed like the book picked up: the pandemic was going viral and everyone went to the Tribe base and bunched together to work things out. But then I began not to care about the characters, the pandemic or what happened with the plot. Maybe if it had been faster... or the characters spent less time talking and more doing things, or if we knew how Kang could keep himself hidden away, or if not so many different people came to juggle things... or maybe if I had read it at another time... who knows exactly why, but I couldn't care for this one.

I'm not sure if this is meant to be the final book in the series -- it felt that way to me while reading it -- but if it is, I am totally good with the way things were tied up at the conclusion of the book.

This has been such a fun series to read, and Angel is definitely one of my favorite, scrappy characters I've read about. I love that Angel has never allowed herself to be anyone's victim, even when she has been a victim of her circumstances.

These books have had just the right mixture of humor, mystery, action, and adventure with a dash of light horror every once in a while. The characters are the type you grow to love (and some love to hate) and feel like you know them as friends.

If this IS the final book, I will miss Angel and company. If there's more to come, even better!

Angel was back to her fun self in this one, she was far, far less emo and whiny about everything. She actually had quite a lot of hilarious thoughts and moments, especially when she was around Pierce, Allen and Nick. Also, bonus points for the zombie alligators.

Action-packed, hilarious, and full of heart. I enjoyed all the personal growth Angel accomplished. She's one bad-ass, redneck zombie chick. Foul-mouthed and full of sass! Loved her!

A fun, satisfying conclusion to the series. The audios are the way to go!

This one was as good as the others in this series. It's nice to see Angel and her dad in a good relationship, caring for each other. Angel and her pet alligators! and Kristie fucking Cherish. by now, i'm pretty sure that's her middle name. but i love every time Angel says it. She's such a bad ass. Her and Mercy Thompson are my favorite urban fantasy heroines.
Allison MacLemore does such a great job reading these. if there's more, i'll listen to them too.

This had everything I expected when I read the title for White Trash Zombie Apocalypse. Shambling zombies are spreading in epidemic proportions, and Angel is the source of the initial infection. Talk about reinforcing the negative impact of drug use.
Half the town is turning into super infectious zombies while the rest are entering panic status. This is the zombie apocalypse; they should have used the title for this book instead.
This was a full-blown zombie ending that was fitting to the series. Definitely the best of the lot. Angel's friends seem to be different people in each book (outside of the Tribe) depending on who she makes an instant connection with. But she always sticks her neck out for them, and gives them all her loyalty. Everything wraps up pretty nicely, without the ridiculous fairy-tale epilogues a lot of series seem to get. They just get to move on with their lives, and the future looks brighter.

I really enjoyed this series, there are parts I was like what this can’t be real even in fiction lol but say la vee right. I really enjoyed the alligator scenes in this book it was oddly funny and kind of right.
The sample’s scene was hella intense and I loved it.

The Frogs oh my that had me cracking up. Fluffy ;)
I really enjoyed how all the parts of this book come together it really was interesting once I got past the re growth of body parts.

Overall I really enjoyed the series I loved Angel’s attitude and how she is herself right from book 1 through book 6 she says what is on her mind whether you like it or not.
I love, love, the side characters they really bring these books full circle.

The narrator is excellent I couldn’t ask for more from one person.

I love this series.

In this book Angel has just recovered from literally falling apart, only to discover there are shamblers about and that there's a leak within the zombie organisation she's a part of.

With stuff like that going on, there's not a dull moment in this book. I was hooked from the start and had a hard time putting the book down. Angel is resourceful, smart and has great instincts, which lead her in the right direction to try and save the day, but it also puts her in the line of fire.

There are developments both with old characters and new ones. One seemed to go a bit fast, but for the sake of the story I was willing to go with it. I'm also starting to like angel's father more and more I must say.

All in all a great read. I hope there will be more books in this series, because this series keeps getting better and better.

My original White Trash Zombie Unchained audiobook review and many others can be found at Audiobook Reviewer.

White Trash Zombie Unchained by Diana Rowland is the sixth novel in a series called White Trash Zombie.  Angel Crawford, a recently regrown zombie, is finally returning to her normal life from her traumatic injuries. Then she learns that a new zombie type has emerged. These zombies are not like Angel or other zombies that she knows which are generally normal except for needing brains for food. These new zombies are mindless shamblers that are not only infectious but also ravenous, looking for any food source. Angel begins working with the other real zombies and humans that know about zombies to find a cure as quickly as possible. She’s not a scientist, but she contributes as much as she can with her knowledge from the morgue and her own experiences as well as working as an investigator and fighting when necessary. When one of Angel’s loved ones becomes a shambler, she becomes even more desperate and determined to find a cure before the shambler hoard can take over.

This is a fun novel. The concept of generally normal zombies is unique and intriguing and then pitting the regular zombies with a classic version of zombies makes a great story. I really enjoyed all the scientific background given to foundation of zombies, how the shamblers are different and finding the cure. It’s just a little bit of scientific explanation, but it makes the story richer. Angel is a great character, determined and flawed. There are a lot of characters in the novel and this can be hard to follow if you haven’t read the previous novels. And so, I think knowing the background and who everyone is from the previous novels would really make reading this novel richer. But I found it to work as a standalone as well. The story itself is fast paced and action packed with the right amount of downtime to learn about what is happening. The interactions between the characters are engaging and Angel is sassy and funny.

Allison McLemore’s narration is excellent. She manages the accents perfectly and characterizes each of the characters well. Her pacing is also great. The production quality was good as well. I would recommend this novel to anyone who likes fast-paced, zombie, urban fantasy stories with a strong female protagonist.

4.5 Out Of 5 "Zombie Love" STARS

I'm thinking this could be the conclusion of the series…if it is, I'm fine with that it tidied everything and everyone up well.  I will miss it, though.  Angel has really grown on me.  I do believe she is my favorite zombie. Her and Liv (iZombie) are running neck and neck.

Somebody finally listened to me griping about the covers because this one is perfect.  This book (the whole series, actually) is a guilty pleasure at it's best…overtly cheesy at times, but sometimes cheesy is okay, at least when you really come to know and love the characters in a story, it can be.

Okay, so here’s the truth. I picked up the very first White Trash Zombie book because I liked the cover. Yes, I am that person who picks a book based on the cover.

I am so glad I did.

This is one of my all-time favorite series. And I hate (like all caps HATE) sentient zombies. But I love Angel and I love this series. I don’t think you need to read the prior books in order to enjoy this one. The author gives you what you need to know without boring devoted fans.

Now, in ‘Unchained’, we actually get some more traditional zombies. Shamblers. Mindless, hungry, TWD kind of zombies. And the reason behind it is devastating.

Expect to tear up, to worry about some of your favorite characters, and, of course, expect some serious butt-kicking, Angel-Style revenge. Brains will be eaten, rampant destruction will happen, and you’ll enjoy every page of it.

And then there’s Tupac & Biggie – the sweetest new characters in the series. Just wait for them…

Awesome badassery and I can’t wait for the next book!

5 Stars... As the conclusion to this series, this book was sheer perfection... Our flawed yet lovable heroine, Angel Crawford, is the heart and soul of this series... We watch her stumble through life only to outshine and outclass those around her... We witness her journey in embracing herself, gaining confidence, and finding relationships that are worthy of her... This read brings Angel full circle in an exhilarating conclusion to this unique and entertaining series:)

”Maybe believing in a better tomorrow wasn’t so sappy after all.”

4 stars. I’m genuinely sad that this series is over. I love it so much. This has been such a fun and unique ride from start to finish. Angel’s character development from book one to this final one is such a huge difference but she’s still such a likable and funny character. Rowland did a perfect job with her character.

This one jumps right into the action and there were a lot of action packed moments, but this one also had a lot of heart and emotion in it that I was definitely not expecting it. Speaking of things I wasn’t expecting, the romance caught me off guard but in a good way because I never even thought to put Angel with this particular character (no spoilers) but I really liked it. He was honestly the best choice for her but I think this should’ve been established at least in the book before this one. It felt random but I still liked it.

I loved the way this book wrapped up and I think it ended on a great note. I cannot recommend this series enough. It’s a great zombie series with a fantastic cast of characters.

A pleasant sequel with some good ideas and a nice zombie vibe.

It was entertaining to follow Angel's adventures once again, facing a new mystery and a serious plague. I especially enjoyed to learn more about mature zombies and some of the oldest characters, it answered some questions previously risen. I also liked the choice for the plague, it fitted well the series, even if I was a little disappointed by the outcome. The relationships between the various characters were good, Angel took the time to grow a little more and the new additions were nice ones. Overall, a good read, with some humor and new prospects for the future.

My review and an extended sample of the audiobook are posted at Hotlistens.com.

I love this series to pieces. I started reading it in paper right after the first book was released (I was already a Diana Rowland fan from her Kara Gillian demon series). I mean, how can I turn away from a series when the first book is called, My Life as a White Trash Zombie, with what is probably the best covers in the Urban Fantasy genre. The later, I tried the audiobooks and Allison McLemore really brings this story the next level. She is the perfect voice for Angel Crawford and brings the story alive with all the voices in this series.

This story picks up not that long after the end of White Trash Zombie Gone Wild. Angel is recovering from her horrible issue from the previous story. They have her on a new version of meds that aren’t addictive, which is really good for Angel and her addictive personality. Angel has really come a long way. She has grown from the drug addict, high school dropout, going nowhere to a college student with a respectable job at the county coroner’s office (even if everyone doesn’t understand it). She is even making herself a VIP in the zombie tribe. Helping out in the lab and someone who has the ear of the current leader (even if that leader is only a figurehead).

So, in this story, people are turning into “shamblers”. People are all of a sudden becoming what everything thinks of when the hear the word “zombie”. These shamblers are turning all of a sudden and it seems to be contagious. The medical community isn’t quite sure how it is being transmitted. Could be fluids, mosquitoes, no one knows. I’m sure you could see how that could cause a panic. It is also hard for the tribe. They don’t want the population of humans to realize that zombies exist, so this new kind of zombie is not good for them.

We learn more about zombie physiology. We get to spend some time with some secondary characters from previous books (in many different ways). I love how Angel is able to make new friends, too. And as I said earlier, seeing Angel grow more and more is great too. Oh, I can’t forget the alligators from the cover. Biggie and Tupac were great. Wait until you read it and see how they fit into the story.

I wouldn’t recommend starting with this book. I think you really need to start with book one to see where Angel came from. See how far she’s come. Plus, we learn more and more about zombies in each book. Plus, they are fun stories. Angel always seems to find herself in some interesting shenanigans.

Narration
What to say about Allison McLemore that I haven’t already said in a previous review?? Her narrations are perfect for this series. She really has the perfect voice for Angel Crawford. She does several different Southern accents for the different characters. She’s also able to lose the accent for characters from out of state. She brings this already fun story to life. I can’t imagine going back to just reading them.

**I like to thank the publisher for providing me with a copy of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.

Angel is just starting to get back to normal after Mardi Gras. Finally back to work, and the dead guy gets up from the table. He's not a zombie like Angel, more like movie zombies. Shambling zombies. Angel and the rest of the Tribe have to figure out what's going on before more people turn and die. I love this series! I was bummed that the release date kept getting pushed back, but it was worth the wait.

Such a good book. This series is consistently good but this book exceeds the previous books a little which is really unusual. I loved the zombiegators. The romance was okay, but not really understandable on the guys part, especially in this book. But overall a really great book/great series.

White Trash Zombie Unchained is the sixth and final book in the delightfully entertaining White Trash Zombie series. If you haven’t read this series, do not start here. This urban fantasy tale builds upon the events from each previous book.

Picking up a couple weeks after Angel literally fell apart while trying to save the Tribe, she’s fully healed and back to work and school. Things go sideways when a body brought to the morgue reanimates and shambles, and soon it’s happening across the parish.

White Trash Zombie Unchained is my favorite book of the series by far, and it’s a well-written conclusion for the overall story arc. I love how the whole group comes together against a common threat: a real zombie epidemic. Angel is absolutely stellar. She still isn’t perfect, but she is beyond competent. She is compassionate when called for, and brutally honest when needed. She reads people and situations with acute clarity. And she has learned to own up to her mistakes.

I loved how the threat of the zombie epidemic adds tension to the entire story. It is a nightmare come to life for Angel and the Tribe. The clock is ticking and as the mutated disease gets close to home, Angel is brilliant. I absolutely loved watching her put the pieces together and figure it all out. Plus, there are zombie gators and they are so awesome!

Probably my favorite thing about the book, however, is seeing how all of Angel’s relationships have developed over the course of the series. In the first book, we witness broken relationships and a closed-off Angel, and by the end of White Trash Zombie Unchained, she has created and fostered healthy and supportive relationships with her dad and a dozen or more found family members. Plus, Angel finds herself with an equally lovely budding romance. And then there is a scene with another friend that was so emotional, I found myself in tears.

Narration: The story is shared via the first person POV of Angel. McLemore utilizes a lively, southern-accented female voice for Angel/the narrator. Her voice well-suited for Angel, and I adore her performance. McLemore successfully alters her voice for the dialogue based on character gender, with slight variances between each character, each becoming familiar over the course of the series. She adds a lot of great emotion for Angel, helping me get caught up in Angel’s world.

That said I have two issues with the narration in White Trash Zombie Unchained. First, the narrator changed the pronunciation of one of the main characters’ names. I don’t care if it was incorrect for the first five books, it shouldn’t have been changed for this last one. It took me out of the story almost every time I heard it. Second, there are several “patches” to the narration that were done after the initial recording. McLemore sounds like she has a cold and the patches are disruptive to my listening experience.

In the end, I adore Angel Crawford and enjoyed watching her go from a White Trash Zombie to an amazing human being! This series has been a joy and I highly recommend.

My ratings:
Story: A
Narration: B/B-
