The Broadview Anthology of Short Fiction is a compact anthology that presents a wide range of exemplary works in a collection of elegant proportions. The anthology's core logic is the inclusion of stories most frequently and successfully taught to undergraduates in university courses, in North America and beyond. This selection of twenty-six stories (from the nineteenth to the twenty-first centuries) illustrates diverse narrative styles and techniques as well as a broad spectrum of human experiences. The collection comprises useful classroom examples, recognized classics of the genre, and some very interesting, less often anthologized works. Stories are organized chronologically, are lightly annotated for the undergraduate reader, and are prefaced by engaging short introductions. Also included is a glossary of basic critical terms, with examples in many cases from the stories themselves.
This is a fabulous collection of short stories from some of the best and most renowned writers out there. With a wide range of writers and genres and subject matters I think there’s something for everyone in here. Whether you choose to read this just because you love to read, because you love short stories or you want a better understanding of what the short story is capable of, this is the ideal anthology. I haven’t read every piece in here yet but I’m looking forward to doing so at a later date. My favourite so far has been “A Rose for Emily” by William Faulkner.
A fabulous collection of short stories spanning 150 years, I highly recommend it if you’re a fan of classics & contemporary literature. Authors include: Jamaica Kincaid, Faulkner, Melville, Hawthorne, Flannery O’Connor, Tim O’Brian, Joyce. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and will be adding it to my collection.
Edgar Allen Poe - The Black Cat, specifically, The Cask of Amontillado are personal favourite. Perfectly mastered short stories, dripping in irony and symbolism. Great text for students to study.
