From the Thirteenth century through the Nineteenth, the waterways of the world provided the major means of transportation for exploration, trade, the military, and even criminals. This engaging history helps to separate fact from fiction while exploring the reasons the sea and sea life have held such prominent roles in popular fiction, and will help students understand what life was truly like for these people.

كتاب 📖 فريد من نوعه
لا يصلح لجميع القراء، شخصياً كنت مهتم كثيراً في
الحياة في عصور البحار وكيف كان يعيش الناس وكيف كانت الدول تتصرف في عصور هيمنة البحر.

إذا كنت ترغب في معرفة التفاصيل الحياتية للبشر والشعوب والدول الكبرى التي كانت في القرون بين الخامس عشر والتاسع عشر فأنصحك بالكتاب خصوصاً أن كثير من التفاصيل هي مهمة لمعرفة كيف تشكل العالم اليوم وذلك من خلال معرفة تفاصيل
الاستعمار والحرب على المصادر الطبيعية.

أذا كنت تبحث عن كتاب يحكي عن تاريخ الملاحة البحرية فهذا الكتاب بتأكيد ليس الكتاب المطلوب!
أما اذا كنت تبحث عن كتاب يتكلم عن عصر القراصنة ومعاركهم وغاراتهم فأيضاً هذا الكتاب ليس المطلوب!!
هذا كتاب مهتم بيوميات عصر الملاحة، ومهتم بتفصيلات مملة عن أشكال السفن ورسومها وطرق صنعاتها، وأسماء جميع الأدوات المستخدمة في البحار أو الموانئ. برأيي أنه لم يُكتب كتاب أكثر مللاً من هذا الكتاب. وَمِمَّا زاد الطينة بلة أن الترجمة كانت ضعيفة مما أضطرني أن أعيد قراءة بعض الجمل أكثر ممن مرة لأفهم المقصود، وأحياناً لم أفلح بالفهم.
أحسست بالملل من الصفحات الأولى لكني أقنعت نفسي أن الفصول الخاصة بالقراصنة والمعارك البحرية سوف تكون شيقة وتشجعت على مواصلة القراءة. لكن الكاتبين كالعادة أخلفا ظني وتفننا بالعرض الممل كالعادة. عندها تركت الكتاب ولم أكمل القراءة!!

كثير من المسميات التي يتعارف عليه البحار في أروربا مثل ممر الأرملة عند المواني ، وجود سبب تسميتها في هذا الكتاب الذي يتكلم عن حياة البحار و المواني الأوروبية التي اشتهرت في القرن التاسع عشر، كتاب جميل و ممتع يتضم صور لأجزاء السفن القديمة و طرق ربط الحبال و غيرها من مستلزمات البحار قديما.

من فترة بدأت بقراءة مجموعة كتب لبحث شخصي أقوم فيه يخص رواية أعمل عليها، لو وضعت كل الكتب التي قرأتها في كفة وهذا الكتاب في كفة لرجحت كفة الملاحة البحرية
كمية المعلومات والتفاصيل التي خرجت منها بهذا الكتاب لا تصدق، الحمدلله وكل الشكر لدار كلمة وللمترجمة خلود الخطيب على ترجمة ونشر هذا العمل

ان كان هناك عيب واحد فيه فهو ارتكاب المترجمة لأخطاء بسيطة، فمثلاً تشير لـ "واشنطن" على انها "المدينة" بينما واضح من السياق ان النص يتحدث عن "الرجل" الذي سُميت المدينة لاحقاً عليه

I think this book would be one of the best to read during your free time. I encourage you to read this book because it has a lot of imagery-creating text and very specific first person details in the plot. I'm surprised to say that even though the book was GOOD, I am inclined to say that the details of the sailors journey could have been a little better. I realized that details can only be so good, but the plot was okay because of the first person journey by the sailors. I was reminded of slave ships when I read the book because of the images in the book and the statements made by the sailors. I wonder if the sailors had a different job, who the book still be interesting? If I had to write a summary of this book, I would read the back of the cover.

Having never really studied the age of sail, I found this book endlessly detailed and informative, though a bit dry at times. Still, very helpful in giving a more accurate idea of life aboard ship than other more flavorful texts. Still amazed at how much life and language are still affected by this period.

كتاب ذو موضوع نادراً ما تتحدث عنه المكتبة العربية، فيه فائدة جمة ويكشف عن جزء مهم من التاريخ الإنساني لطالما كان مختفياً عن القارئ العربي..!!
