Westward: The Epic Crossing of the American Landscape

Rate this book
In the early 1800s, the unknown and uncharted American West lured travelers, explorers and spiritual seekers from around the world. In a combination of archival manuscripts and sketches, old and new maps, Westward recreates the journey that opened up the West. This photographic and written narrative both tells the story of Manifest Destiny and preserves the timeless beauty and allure of the land.

A series of reports from the 19th century explorers of the American west, using for the most part primary sources from the explorers themselves or editors of their dairies. My favorites: Jediah Smith. Joseph Ives and John Wesley Powell. Beautiful photos in a picture book format.
