I love the story line, I have gotten used to the pulp-fiction stile of writing and I really like the author, but I am getting the impression that the author is really going overboard with the "only Americans are good and brave, all others are penzeys" philosophy... Not a good word for any other nationality but Australians and somewhat Brits? Really??? Well, as a friend noted, there is always place for gorgeous exotic women no matter where they come from:):):):)

Another incredible instalment.

I am seriously at a loss what to write about this book. So much happened. Every turn of the page, (or swipe left cause I use kindle) there is something new and exciting happening. It is a non stop action. And adventure. I wish this world really did exist.

Yeah I know it's fiction, but what are books for if not to dream. Have you ever got so involved in a good book that you wish it was true? Well that's me with this series. I really want it to be true.

There is no inequality with BA. You are who you are. She sees you as a person. If you wrong one off hers then start praying. No matter how long or how far she has to go she will avenge that person. It really is all for one, and one for all.

In this book she removes someone she has been searching for, for a long time. She finally pays back for Michael's death. (But is he?). She helps out the USA president. While fighting a battle in space. But the best bit is when she helps one of her people show her father what she is doing is honourable. That scene brought a tear to my eye.

So I dare you to try it. It takes supernatural and science fiction to a whole new level. Enjoy!

Nope. Nope. Nope. I laughed out loud many times, and not in a good way. I have a pretty low bar when it comes to light, funny reads, but the writing and audio performance are both awful.

A bit of an anticlimax and more of a damp squid

An okay read but frankly a bit of a let down. Nicely built up tension in several scenes and then blah! fizzled out like a damp squid. Sorry but this didn't do justice to the plot or the characters. They meet the Leopard Empress and new aliens but it is over too fast - Wham Bam Thank You Ma'Am! Sorry but more time was spent on the non event of her meeting the heads of state than on the events that really should have had the time and effort put into them.
Yes we know ADAM has a soft spot for Yuko but does it really rate more effort than her meeting with the Leopard Empress?
Sorry really disappointed in this one

Thank you

I wish to thank the author for killing off the annoying kitty cat lady, a little anticlimactic however it was appreciated.

Ratings are based on this being unarguably just a fun action series full of stereotypes and tropes and having no pretense of being anything but.

Does drag at the "how to build" discussions. Cancelling the Kindle Unlimited subscription this afternoon, so I may not continue the series. I'd started with his The Second Dark Ages series and do like that a bit better than this one. Will probably pick up KU again when the next in the Dark Ages comes out and continue this series then. Anyone following my reviews can see I've been in fluff reading mode for a bit now (sorry!) but needed the escapism.

On the upside, Michael's author's notes are informative. He has at different times sponsored multiple new Kindle donations to those serving in the military and the stereotype for that audience would love these books (bureaucrats are shit, the heroes are military, fight the bad guy and win - multiple times in each book, lot of things go boom). He is open to sharing how his covers are done, his writing programs, how much comes in from KU and other sources - pretty much whatever people want to ask. He's put himself into anthologies so people might read the other unknown authors in those books. Gets points for all these things.

2.5

There are things about this series that I do like. The world is fairly original and the premise is engaging. I do find the characters, who are likeable in general, to be rather 2 dimensional and the political overtones to be frustrating and not my cup of tea. I won't go so far as to say that the stories are misogynistic, as some have said, but they are obviously written by a man who was raised in a patriarchy even though he's trying to make his female characters strong. I think he misses the mark with it, though, and ends up making them a bit... comic-book like. I often feel like I'm reading fan-service for adolescent boys who have been raised in politically conservative environments.

That said, Emily Beresford is an excellent narrator and I hope that we get to hear more from her when she is finished narrating this series. She does multiple voices quite well and enables immersion easily.

These are fun books to read if you don’t have a problem with swearing. There is action, interesting characters, humour and a good story. Definitely left the realm of urban fantasy and arrived in sci-fi

Where do I start? Love this series!

I have to say, since the very first book in this series, I have been completely hooked! I'm a latecomer to the series, which is probably a good thing, as I go through a book every 3-5 days! I really love the mental commentary between Bethany Anne, TOM, and ADAM. And the humor, coupled with the age and culture differences in so many of the characters, has me literally howling with laughter. The continual banter reminds me of the tv show, Farscape, which I adored. What made me finally decided to write a review was your reference to the Samurai warrior Kenshin. I literally JUST finished watching that anime on Netflix (again, behind the times, I know), and LOVED IT! To see him pop up as one of Bethany Anne's Guards just made my day!

Alien Incursion!

It’s been a while since I read the first 11 books in this series and decided to take a break. I took the break because reading 11 books in a row can melt the brain. The long break was because I got distracted and forgot to go back and restart the series. I’m glad I did, because I’d forgotten why I blasted through the first 11 books!

This is a great series. It’s got sci-fi, politics, economics, military strategy, vampires, shifters and aliens. It’s got great characters and oodles of plot.

You really can’t go wrong!

Overall I liked it, but I'm a little disappointed in the aliens. Having the same habits of cussing and satirical humor makes them feel like humans in alien costumes, ala far too many TV SciFi shows. Better if they'd been a little more different in their mindset and psychology. Even though that would've been a lot harder to write.

Other than that, I'm still enjoying the series, and looking forward to reading the next one.

it was an okay read, nothing memorable though

This was a reasonable if not an exciting next story in the episodic story of TKG. I think the author was trying for exciting, but missed the mark somewhat.

I did find the opening scene with BA caring for the new child of Nathan and Ectarina a humorous start. Calling the diaper a radioactive nightmare was likely an understatement. I can’t imagine having enhanced senses and not being overwhelmed by that.

Having Yuko and Adam’s friendship grow, which allowed for Adam to grow as an AI, was a nice touch in the story too. Though I thought the entire subservient attitude of Yuko was a bit much. This is a woman who broke from her family, found her own way and joins a group of people who are living and expanding what humans can do in space.

I would think even within Japanese culture, there aren’t so many who prescribe to such an outdated mentality. I’m all about respecting your elders and caring about right and wrong. That attitude is supposed to work both ways though.

I thought Yuko was too bland. She’s a hacker and obviously a good one. She had a strong enough personality to break from the more transitional setting of her home life to make a better world for herself. I can understand her doubt as she goes forward, but not the overly meek attitude she shows. The constant need for approval just didn’t ring true. That she basically has to beat her father over the head to show she was a good and honorable daughter was horrible. The man didn’t deserve respect because he wasn’t willing to give it until forced to do so.

The interactions with the Yollin aliens was only okay as well. This is the first interaction in centuries humans have had with an alien culture, TOM being one of the first. I don’t think the author meant it to be viewed this way, but I kept getting the image of a walking broccoli for what the Yollins looked like, and their attitudes, at least at the end during the surrender, were similar to pack structure of the Wechelsbag. They are aliens, I guess I expected more non-Earthlike behavior from them.

At least by giving them this honorable way in defeat, the humans have the opportunity to develop more space worthy equipment by getting the help of the Yollins. They can use the best of Yollin technology incorporated with TOMs Kutherian knowledge and human ingenuity to create something unique.

I wish each book could stand alone though. If you haven’t read the entire series, too much will be missed if you jump in midway, There are so many callback comments and scenes, that if you hadn’t read the previous books, you’d be lost. I’d consider putting this on a list of books to recommend to friends, but most people aren’t the voracious reader that I am. Few hundred books a year - for me, totally doable. For most people, two books a month is more likely. With these, potential readers could fit in a couple more per month, as they aren’t exactly a difficult read. They are fast and quick, and with the limited vocabulary needed these have a relatively low reading comprehension level. I would recommend them for high schooler age to read, but the violence and language used aren’t going to be what some parents would want their child exposed to.

I will likely keep reading, if only because I tend to be a completist when reading a series or author. Though I have to say if the author just up and quit writing, I wouldn’t be bothered about not getting an ending to the story either. This is likely because it is rather easy to see where the story is going and how it will end up. It’s a bit too predictable.

4 Bedevil Me With Bullshit Stars

WE HAVE CONTACT is the twelfth book in The Kurtherian Gambit series by Michael Anderle.

This book was one giant flustercluck in how it was laid out. Especially in the second half where we come up against three emergencies: saving one of their hidden operatives from ISIS, hunting down Stephanie Lee before the Chinese government could reach her, and saving their people when they were attacked by an alien force.

Thankfully, that bitch died. Finally!! I’m simply upset that the ‘Kings’ were somehow able to get away with the parts from the Seven’s Kurtherian ship within her possession. And that, at this time, we don’t have Bethany Anne is even aware that it is missing. While a contingent of Chinese scientists and military are actively trying to hunt it down.

I wonder what will come of the seven years indentured servitude the Queen calls for from the aliens for attacking them? They will make many advancements simply from studying their technology. Will the next book bring us towards reaching for further stars? And how will the human race, left on Earth, defend itself from further encroachment when other alien races come hoping to study and enslave them?

Also, who the frack is this Peeping Paula chick? That’s hunting Bethany Anne’s Guard? So many new and interesting avenues to consider for the future plot lines to unfold.

I've been derailed...

With tears in my eyes I just finished book 12 of the Kutherian Gambit. Swirling multiple plot resolutions seems to be Michael Anderle's speciality. I still have issues with the female interactions being sterotypical, but that's why it's fiction, right? I'm starting to recognize the absence of certain characters being another short story opportunity for the author.

Now I'm off to borrow book 13 and look for a short story if there is a 12.5. Mr. Anderle, I do have a life and you've successfully derailed me from getting any tasks completed as I feel compelled to complete this series. Good job!

One more good story!

Have to confess, you do write a good story! The next story will cover what B.A. is gonna do with her new group of alien critters. This is way after you have written it, but it should cover a custom and culture talk with the captain and crew. Both, because officers and enlisted operate in different areas. Not saying one is better or worse, just saying. Getting him to agree to a seven year servitude was a good ploy, much better than seeing what alien blood looks like. Like most fat, lazy old men, I would jump into the fix it pod in less than a heartbeat!!

Another rollicking read. Having read 12 books back to back I won't say the story line is becoming predictable but it is a comfort to not have familiar characters killed off. It is fun to have something to read where the characters have no fear of death, and financial losses. I still find the product placement marginally irritating but it's fun to mentally replace certain 'beverages' with healthier alternatives! 😅 And I figure the named drinks can be used to clean any metalwork they have lying around on their spaceship. Well, it makes me chuckle.
All good fun and a wonderful time out from the current 'reality'.

Good one, Mr. Anderle!

Great story, and characters, with kick a$$ non-stop action! When I was young I loved horror movies. Nothing bothered me in what are some truly horrifying horror flicks. That being said, when we meet our new "friends?" in this book, it grossed me out! Briefly, and then I giggled, thinking about how far I've come from my past. But I will say with 98.9% certainty, that we all have something that squicks us. What freaks out one person won't begin to phase another. Don't let my comment stop you from reading this, it's a damned good book, with just a bit of ick factor!

Another entertaining story in the Kurtherian Universe! Lovable characters, funny anecdotes, and casual horseplay among the teams make all these books just fun to read. I've never been a Sci-Fi reader, but these make it fun to read, so it's not too bad (Although, I am missing my dragons and wizard/mage stories I normally read). I've thought about reading all the books in this "world" but I really have no interest in some of the off-shoots, like the Boris Chronicles. To me, Boris just wasn't that interesting of a character that I wanted to know more about him.

Boy, DO they have contact!

Bethany Anne is being who she is to the nth degree in this book. She tells it how it is, and holds no prisoners - well, she does, until she can get to the person who gave the orders, that killed one of her people, anyway!

I really love how unstoppable she is when seeking revenge, but how she also makes sure her people are trained, and trained beyond well, in order to save their own lives, if she's not around!

I didn't think the Kurtherian Gambit could get any better but, book by book, it is - and I'm loving every second of reading it!

Audiobook review: Multiple battles occur on Earth and in space. Bethany Anne, her father Lance, the Bitches, Guardians, Rangers, the second Kuthereian, Chinese, and aliens (yes, aliens) show off their fighting prowess. Not all survive unharmed. As a side note, this book has a few comical interactions. My favorites include the baby diaper scene and the dressing down of the French ambassador. Love this series! As always, Ms. Beresford did a wonderful job narrating!

Space battles! :)

While there was a lot of ground covered in this book, no pun intended, it was great to ‘see’ the first contact and space battles. Some sad points. The end was most certainly victorious for one of the characters and that person handled it really well, with forgiveness and not rubbing it in. I love that the TQB folks always try to act with kindness and honor, when the bad guys allow it.

This whole series has been a fun read! I thought when I started the first that this was 'just another vampire series'....boy, was that wrong! Aliens, genetically altered humans (ok, vampires but they were altered by ancient aliens), space, and alien technology. Add to that, enough fighting and, as the author says " take that,SUCKA!". This is the first series where I've read every set of author's notes, as well.

We have space battles now, yipee

It's tidy up time for BA as she has to contend with those looking to upset her plans. As team QB looks out into the new frontier of space it seems there is still some work to be done on
Earth as forces come into play that are just going to upset BA , and as everyone knows you pay the price when you upset the Queen. Another excellent page turner and an exciting look into how the books will develop as we leave Earth for space.

Well that went well

BA and the gang tie up loose ends with the leopard clan, and are doing a presidential favor in the sand box when our unwanted visitors make their first move. Gambit indeed! The aliens are not as dumb as they look and Anderle just keeps on adding little tidbits to make sure you know that the, uh, feces is gonna be really interesting. Again. Excellent series, and excellent book. If you haven't dived into the BA universe, then you are missing out!

Wonderful

I am having such a wonderful time reading this series. The humor is dry and sarcastic, which I love. The story continues to be well written and exciting.. And the characters are funny and diverse and very lovable. That is a family I would have loved to have grown up in. This author has a store for items you can purchase. Got my eye on a t-shirt. All the info is at the end of the book. Wish they had that calendar.

Just love reading a book with a strong female lead character. The author really draws you into the series. I love the speed in which the story moves ,you don't stay in one place too long . Read this if you want something well written and good action . Read if you're looking at getting into a awesome series because at this point, I have four more books to read! Yay!
