Robert Kirkman is an American comic book writer best known for his work on The Walking Dead, Invincible for Image Comics, as well as Ultimate X-Men and Marvel Zombies for Marvel Comics. He has also collaborated with Image Comics co-founder Todd McFarlane on the series Haunt. He is one of the five partners of Image Comics, and the only one of the five who was not one of the original co-founders of that publisher.

Robert Kirkman's first comic books were self-published under his own Funk-o-Tron label. Along with childhood friend Tony Moore, Kirkman created Battle Pope which was published in late 2001. Battle Pope ran for over 2 years along with other Funk-o-Tron published books such as InkPunks and Double Take.

In July of 2002, Robert's first work for another company began, with a 4-part SuperPatriot series for Image, along with Battle Pope backup story artist Cory Walker. Robert's creator-owned projects followed shortly thereafter, including Tech Jacket, Invincible and Walking Dead.

Story continues strong here. I'm still enjoying how the characters keep changing and their situation evolves as the plot progresses.

That said, the story seems to be escalating, rather than heading to a conclusion. By this I mean the problem the characters are facing is just getting bigger and bigger until the point where it seems logistically impossible for the characters to solve. And when that happens, it seems like a story is moving in the direction of pointless tragedy or deus ex machina: Both of which would be a shame, as I didn't sign up for either of those things when I started reading this...

I didn't think this was as boring as some of my friends did, but I understand why a lot of people are getting a bit antsy for Kirkman to get a move on plotwise. Unfortunately, I have a feeling that he might be planning to try to keep Outcast afloat as long as he has TWD, which is why I believe that there isn't much forward movement in the individual volumes. I personally don't think this has the same staying power as Rick & Co., but (shockingly!) no one cares about my opinion in matters like this.

There were, however, some half-answers to be found between the pages.
But none of it was a surprise. I mean is this even going to classified as a horror comic anymore?

At any rate, I'm still interested in reading this. I do hope it has an ending, though, because I'm pretty sure I don't want to still be slogging through an art palate this globby and dark 5 years from now.

A bit boring and definitely a filler volume. I feel like Kirkman is sort of stalling. The story in this volume moved at a glacier pace and it was only semi-interesting. Something awesome needs to happen soon or I might lose interest.

Reminder: This is a demon possession/domestic drama involving two guys, Kyle and the Reverend who, through their commitment to demon exorcism and goodness have kinda messed up their family lives. Kyle’s ex might be coming around, though.

The action ramped up and focused somewhat in volume 3, and in volume 4 it is still action-oriented, but in terms of overall development, this one sort of plateaus. Skimming other reviews the complaint seems to be too slow pacing, not enough gradual reveals, and this may be right, depending on how many volumes are planned. Seems like most readers don’t want a 27 volume series, Robert. Pay attention. We don’t want another Walking Dead, the people sayeth.

We do not, as of volume 4, know who these demon guys are, what their ultimate purpose is. We don’t know what “the merge” really is, and we don’t know what role Kyle and the Reverend might be playing in this little drama, we don’t even really know what an “outcast” is! But you know, I am sort of settling in here, liking these people and their dark struggles, though I don’t know really why it is all happening.

Azaceta's art and especially Breitweiser's coloring would seem to be the emerging strengths of this work. I like the little cut-out panels that help us focus in on details or issues in many scenes. Great idea.

Overall, I am still reading, expecting/hoping for some satisfying resolution. I'm thinking this is okay, with some potential still. I'm settling in for what I hope to be like a 5 volume series.

Outcast feels a lot like Walking Dead — its plot is moving veeery slowly, the characters constantly act super dramatic, the demon guys are basically intelligent versions of zombies, and Kyle Barnes is Rick Grimes who doesn't get as many opportunities to give a big speech. Also like TWD, Outcast is very readable, and it has lots of ups and downs. This volume was definitely more on the dramatic side, most notably showing us the darkest moment of Reverend Anderson yet. This guy is a terrible reverend, isn't he? Unfortunately, Kirkman still doesn't want to answer any of the big questions, like who exactly are these demon guys, what are they trying to accomplish, what's so special about outcasts and when are we going to see more of them, and the biggest one of all — how can a regular human being take so much beating and still run away from the bad guys, and then immediately beat the shit out of another guy? It just doesn't make sense! Oh well, I hope it won't take Kirkman another 20 or so volumes to get to at least some of those questions.

We get some answers and we have Kyle being rescued by the Reverend after the last volume where he was captured by Sindey and more, they even exorcise Brian as he seems to have been possessed by one of the demons and its fascinating the way it happens and then there is the deal with whatever Kyle is and there is again a part where he gets Sidney and torture him for the info of what the readers are wondering is even happening. There is some weird stuff going on with a woman named Emily who wants his daughter to transfer to her school and seems to have nefarious purposes and seems like Allison is in with Kyle at this point, something fishy is going on and what happens to Sindey was brutal. This series is a super slow burn and we still don't have any answers as to the nature of the things happening except for demonic possessions and Outcasts - beings who are their opposites.

To make it clear. I still really dig this series. However, this volume was a tad...boring.

I get it. The mystery. The reveal. It'll be huge. So we have to run circles around it. Make it confusing, make it scary, make it exciting. However, some answers need to slip through. In here we got what we expected. A lot of talking, alot of threats, but no real action (till the end). Now I don't need boom, bang, slash action every issue. But I want the plot to move in exciting ways. This volume didn't really do that.

However two major things I LOVED. Kyle is finally less of a moping little bitch. He has funny one liners, good come backs, he's becoming confident, and stronger. It's nice to see his character development. I really enjoyed that. Also, without spoilers, the last few pages is amazing. A turning point, and made this jump up from a 2.5 to a 3.5. So hopefully the series moves forward that way.

Still a great series in total. Very different than anything else out there and I love it for that.

I told myself I wouldn't, but I'm starting to lose patience and interest in this series. Already Volume 4, and we're given practically none of the answers we were promised on the back cover. I'm totally fine with slow burns. I hate having every little question answered from the get-go, but COME ON! The story is going at a snail's pace, and we're no closer to figuring out what the hell an Outcast is, or who these possessed/"merged"/angels/devils/smurfs/whathaveyou really are.

I may continue with Volume 5, if my interest lasts that long, but if the plot keeps getting nowhere, I might have to say farewell to this series.

The story here was extraneous and basically just consisted of a bunch of running around without furthering the plot any. It felt like Kirkman was trying to pad out the story. It borrowed a ton from Invasion of the Body Snatchers and had that same kind of vibe where you no longer no who to trust. Azaceta's art seemed sloppier (than usual) to me. There were some panels I had to really stare at to figure out what was supposed to be occurring in them.

I'm still enjoying the series, just felt like we didn't get any answers in this volume. Kind of like the second season of Lost.

I’ve enjoyed it since volume 1. The series has been quality. My only question is How Will this end? I hope They find Some sort of solution soon because So far the Good Guys have had no luck. Only bad things happen to them. I Still want to keep Reading

Always hard at it Kirkman has designed a new concept : the slow motion comic book.

What surprised me most is that every single bit of the narrative, whether talking heads, transitory scenes or action feels pasted with the same glue. Everything feels so sloooow, like a neurasthenic editor worked through the reel of a contemplative movie. You get the feeling? If not, watch a video of a sloth on Youtube, it might help.

Six issues that could have been done in three at most for a few... a few what? Revelations? Hardly. Hints and allusions more like. And one shocking scene. But somehow enough to maintain a spark of interest for this slogging read. Amazing, if you ask me.

Azaceta's art and Breitweiser's colors shine throughout, so to speak, the overall ambiance being dark and moody yet beautiful.

D***, this series is getting even better!

What’s it about?
So I’m not really going to describe what the fourth volume is about but tell you this. If you wanted to see Robert Kirkman, creator of The Walking Dead, try to do a more occult/demony horror story that’s much better than TWD, read this!

Why it gets 5 stars:
The story is interesting, this volume really adds a lot to it!
The art is some of the best art in comics!
This is a story that is never predictable! It’s very full of interesting plot twists!
This series is very intense.
The characters are very interesting and Kirkman does a great job making me care about them.
Holy s***, this is horror! Outcast is one of the few works of fiction that actually scares me and while this volume is not as scary as volumes 1 and 2 (3 didn’t do much for me in terms of horror TBH) it is still creepy AF. Outcast is perfect October reading!

Overall:
If you’re a fan of horror and you’re not reading this series you’re missing out! It is a really good story that is suspenseful, intense and creepy, at times I would even say scary! Read this comic, it’s sofa king good!

Bullet Review:

It's amazing how when you read a series that utterly flails, then read one that moderately improves on the previous one (while still not being amazing), you feel like you've read the best damned thing in the world.

This is basically Invasion of the Body Snatchers but gorrammit, at least it effing answers questions, unlike that stupid Nailbiter series, which drug it out and drug it out, with all the characters going "I HAVE THE ANSWERS - STAY TUNED NEXT ISSUE WHEN I'LL FINALLY TELL THEM - WHOOPS NOT REALLY!"

I just hope that the crew of this one doesn't try to drag the concept out for 15 thousand volumes. Find an ending and commit.

I can see this being extremely frustrating when read as single issues. Hell, it was frustrating for me reading it as a six issue arc in one go. There's very little plot progression, mild threats are thrown around from everyone concerned, and it just feels like the series is spinning its wheels.

The back cover promises answers, and we get none of that. The mystery of the Outcast and the demons/aliens/whatever that are possessing the people of Rome is no closer to being solved with this volume than it was before. There are one or two 'important' plot points, but for six issues, there's very little substance here.

Azaceta's art and especially Breitweiser's colouring are where this book shines. The atmosphere of dread and the creepiness of the world that Kyle and Reverend Anderson inhabit is very obvious on every page, and I love the way that blood is portrayed here, I'm not sure if that's a penciller or colourist's decision but either way it's great.

The first three volumes of Outcast had me very intrigued, but this one just has me annoyed.

I saw that several found this volume to be more boring. I can see why but I personally am still really digging the slow burn of this story. It is keeping me guessing while giving me small bread crumbs along the way. This does put a lot of pressure on the ending to deliver but so far this continues to be really good.

Outcast Vol. 4: Under Devil’s Wing collects issues 19-24 of the Image Comics series written by Robert Kirkman with art by Paul Azaceta.

Kyle finally starts to get some answers about what is happening around him and what makes him special. Kyle and Reverend Anderson get a new ally on their mission.

There are some kinda answers given in this book but it seems more like filler issues to stretch out the series a bit. Like the last arc, this volume is also pretty brutal with some of the most violent scenes yet. I hope we start getting some actual answers and story advancement in the next arc instead of these pseudo answers.

I'd agree that the story is moving at a snail's pace, but at least it still maintains my interest. Even though the Cinemax television series was only 10 episodes long, it has left the comic in the dust, which is a bit annoying. Reading this felt like catch-up to what I'd already seen, especially with a series that follows (or seems to--maybe it will diverge like TWD?) the original comic so closely. I'd really like for the demons or whatever the heck they are to finally be clearly explained, rather than this whole "beating around the bush" approach to storytelling that's been going on. You know, as I write this review, my general rating has been dropping--I started at 4 stars and dropped to 3. If I keep going, I might drop it to 2, so better stop while I'm ahead.

Still liking this series. Kirkman is doling out the secrets at a s-l-o-w pace, just enough to be tantalizing, but quickly enough to hold the reader's interest. It seems pretty clear that this series is going to have a definite end, unlike, say, Invincible or The Walking Dead. Probably won't get there for at least a few more volumes though. This title would be well served by one of those gravity-warping omnibuses (omnibi?) that are all the rage. You want to read big chunks of this story at once to keep the momentum going. Recommended!

So we remember what I said about the first volume of this series? And the second? And the third? Again, we can spin it out to the fourth: developing, slowly, with enough subtlety in the presentation to keep me reading.

This trade brings us pretty much up to date: at the time of writing there's been four additional issues, so we're still two off another collection. The show based on the property has been and gone, and is seems Kirkman is interested in keeping the slow-burn nature we've become accustomed to thus far. But this volume seems to feature more explaining than previous collections, and ramps up the fuck-is-all-the-town-involved? weirdness level.

That's not to say there's a lack of violence in the work. The series has featured a number of scenes illustrating the physical, confronting effects of exorcism, as well as some Kirkman-standard arsekicking. The author's fixation on bloody mouths continues apace, too, you'll note.

I particularly liked the nod towards the Joker found in some of the colouring used to describe Sidney's hacking: it fits with what we know of him - mysterious and ever-grinning.

And of course, the artwork remains superb. There's all manner of small-town call-outs (the watching owl, a Twin Peaks staple, was a nice touch) and there's the sense we're inhabiting a fully realised world. Time is taken on what in film would be establishing shots: where nothing happens, apart from a deepening of our sense of immersion.

Yep, I'm still into it for this alone, even if the story isn't moving too much. I guess this is what happens from reading a story in progress as opposed to something that's completed.

I still have hope for the series: I think it'll ramp up from here on in, as the stakes have been revealed now - this is a bigger-than-Jesus affair and the potential cost encompasses a small town's entire spiritual health. There is less room for an out now: more of the mythology and history is unveiled in this volume, and it seems the author's pointing us towards an unavoidable battle.

But if it doesn't lead to that?

Reverend Anderson is a badass.
(And may be losing his goddamn mind.)
Those last few pages actually made me cringe.

More questions than answers in this one. I know I'm supposed to care what the deal is with Kyle's mom more than I do. I'm probably also supposed to care more about his daughter and what her deal is. I guess I'm just enjoying the ride right now and don't actually need a huge explanation as to why he (and his family) are how they are or even need a thorough response on what they are. I'm hoping there is enough there to spark my interest in future volumes.

3.5 but Rounding to 4

It was such a great book!
The art is fantastic in this one. Little still frame images stand out in front of larger panels, drawing the reader's eye to some import. Absolutely brilliant! (I say that word a lot, but it's true in almost every case!)
The storyline sped up so fast in this book & so much happened!
When I finished, I immediately went to eBay & then to Amazon... silently cussing that I live in the middle of nowhere, without a bookstore closer than a 2 hour drive!
It's that compelling, if you're into the first book.
The series continues to get better and better!

I do wish this series would pick up the pace of storytelling. Kirkman is really dragging this out. I feel like the entire story could probably have been told in a six volume deluxe edition, but it is getting dragged out for eternity. I hope things start picking up soon. I am still interested in where this is going and the ultimate finale, but I just want us to get there. Despite Kirkman's best efforts this is not The Walking Dead and does not have the staying power. We do learn a bit more about The Merge and the "demons" who are not really demons (so disappointing).

The Reverend reaches his breaking point as he and Kyle try to figure out how to help possessed people.

This volume largely felt unnecessary. It consisted of Kyle being tied to a chair and beaten (then escaping), then the Reverend being captured, tied to a chair and beaten (ditto), then the evil villain being tied to a chair and beaten.

More story, less beatings, please.

Dear Robert Kirkman:

This is SO much better than the Walking Dead. Please retire that painful, overwritten series and focus all of your attentions on this story, which is well served by its fairly sparse dialogue and very, very striking images.

That is all.

This series is always interesting, and I love the art style, but I am at a point where I need the plot to move on. It has been almost 30 issues with next to no explanation for what is happening. I don’t notice it much while I am reading because of the violence and the art style, but Kirkman is really dragging this out. I am worried it is going to be 100 issues in before the plot really happens.
