Dragons are on the warpath. Two heroes will risk everything to protect the ones they love. Bailey Monzac slays dragons. Between her imperviousness to their flames and the training she received from the shape-shifter Aidan, Bailey can finally hold her own. When her ally is called away for clan business, the slayer must go solo to investigate a horrifying case of children being abducted by dragons. And the only way she can find them is by killing a whole lot of the fire-breathing beasts. Aidan's father is dying. The pendragon will appoint a successor through a brutal competition, and Aidan may be the only one willing to play by the rules. Escaping with his life could be his toughest challenge yet. If these natural-born enemies can survive their quests, Bailey and Aidan will still have to face an even greater battle to prevent their territory from going up in flames. Dancing with Flames is the second book in the Dragon's Breath series, a collection of dark fantasy new adult novels. If you like strong, complex female leads, post-apocalyptic shifter and dragon tales, and the slow burn of budding romance, then you'll love the latest installment in Susan Illene's captivating series.
Susan Illene served in the US Army for eleven years and worked as a human resources specialist and an Arabic linguist. She served two deployments to Iraq, and after leaving the army, she studied history at the University of Oklahoma. She currently lives with her husband and two sons.
It has been 4 months since fire-breathing dragons from another dimension have invaded earth. The world with its civilization has been destructed. The dragons keep on extending their territories burning civilization to ashes. There is no place on earth to hide from them.
The dragon slayer Bailey is honing her skills to kill dragons. His ally, the shape-shifter dragon, Aiden is occupied with the task his father has given him to prove himself worthy as a candidate for leadership of their clan.
Bailey encountered a group of men who told her that pure dragons are kidnapping young children. Furious and determined, she set foot in the crumpling world to rescue the kids. But that's no easy task. The kidnapper dragon could be anywhere and it would be too late till she finds the dragon's lair. So, she seeks sorcerer's help in exchange of a favor.
As usual, my favorite character, Conrad is with Bailey to help her finding kids and slaying dragons. He is such a sweet person with a good sense of humor. He is funny and he is always teasing Bailey. I love this teasing duo. They behave in the most natural way any friends do. Even though, this book is a fantasy/dystopian novel, the characters and scenarios are so real-world-like.
The addition of new characters did not affect the story. The story runs smoothly and the new characters fit in perfectly. The credit goes to writer as she paid attention to the details and maintained the atmosphere of the story, meticulously. Character development is great.
This book has better pace than the first installment in the series. It is full of action. Well-written action!
Another good thing about this book is that it can be read as a stand alone book as the start of the book covers all important bits that happened in the first part.
I received an ARC of this book by City Owl Press via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I love this series and I didn't want Dancing With Flames to end.
As the book begins dragons have been on earth for four months. Between the dragons and the various environmental events (earthquakes, storms, etc.) caused by the dragons' world meshing with ours, there has been an apocalypse of sorts and people are dealing with the fall of the industrialized world. Bailey, our heroine and dragon slayer, is living in an enclave mostly inhabited by her college friends. They forage for food and supplies, protect themselves from gangs, and try and stay out of sight of the dragons. Bailey is honing her slaying skills with the help of Aidan, our hero and a dragon shifter. As she and her friend Conrad are driving she is flagged down by a desperate man. He asks Bailey to save his neighbor's son who has been taken by a dragon. The dragon comes back every night to look for more children. This starts the ball rolling for Bailey's part of the book.
As well as training Bailey, Aidan has a lot on his plate. His father, the pendragon, has decided to step down in two weeks and gives each of his children a task they must complete to be considered for the position as his successor. Aidan is given the task of forging a treaty with another clan. With the succession up for grabs, there is a fair amount of jockeying for position among the candidates. Some is political and some is deadly.
One of the things I love about Susan Illene's books is that neither the hero nor the heroine is a sidekick. They have their own stuff to do and exist separately from each other. That makes the scenes when they are together so much better. There are a lot of series where one of the two MCs is more of a helper than a person in their own right. This is never a problem with Ms. Illene. Even her minor characters have lives outside of their interactions with the MCs.
Having said that, I love Bailey most. Here is a quote: "A few days of staying at Earl's again had reminded me how I wasn't much of a people person. Sure, I enjoyed saving them. I just didn't want to have to actually talk to them beyond saying 'Go hide, I'll take care of this.'" The action scenes mostly involve Bailey and there's a particularly breathtaking one in which Bailey and Aidan's sister take down a dragon together.
The story picks up a lot of speed in this book and I was not ready for it to end. Waiting until October for the next book will suck.
*This book was received via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review*
This was a really interesting and original take on the apocalypse which involved dragons. The characters were well developed and the plot was quite fast paced. After I had finished reading this book I found out it was the second book in the series. When I was reading it however, I would not have guessed this. The book was so well written that it could almost be a stand alone. I can't wait to read the first book and discover more about this new world and learn more about Aidan and Bailey's relationship. I am also looking forward to finding out more about the political side of things in the third installment.
Stalked by Flames was an excellent book, Dancing with Flames is a good book. The difference between them lies more in the writing and less in the story. Sometimes a book is more about the technicalities when being judged.
Dancing with Flames has an excellent narrative and is a fun read. That much is easy to say. There are points that make you laugh, make you sad, make you wonder what is going to happen next. All good points for the book.
Then you get to the technical point of “lazy” or “convenience” writing. Things that seemingly happen for no rhyme or reason. Or they do happen for one, but it plays out in such an anticlimactic, unsatisfactory, or nonsensical manner that the spell of the story is broken. Unfortunately Dancing with Flames has that happen within it.
The last 25% of the book in fact feels like it was written at a break-neck pace and not properly thought out. While the ending will leave you curious, it will also leave you a little confused as to how you got there, and that isn’t a good thing.
Overall, it was a great story and decent writing till towards the end. Something worth reading, yes. Something that is the end all be all of book or the best in the series, no. If the writing gets less “lazy” the books in the series will soar like the dragons held within. I am hoping the story holds up to the current level of excellence.
So this book is all about Dragons and Dragon Slayers. How much more badass does it get right? So this book starts where the first, Stalked by Flames, left off. Dragons have invaded from another dimensions and they are nasty. People are now being trained to assassinate these dragons, and here we meet our heroine Bailey Monzac. Bailey cannot be hurt by dragon fire which pretty much sets in stone her occupation in life. Especially once these dragons decide to abduct many children, her choice is made. Hotly male Aiden is distracted with pack business in this book so Bailey must work on this case on her own.
Aiden is going through all kinds off hell in Dancing with Flames. His brothers are all battling for the position of leader of the pack since his father is dying. There is a threat of being killed and Aiden must watch his back from his own family. Even though Aiden and Bailey technically should not match or get along, they have to work together to save the situation at hand.
All kinds of bad things are happening in this book. From earthquakes, fire breathing dragons and storms caused by the meshing of the two worlds, Bailey has her work cut out for her. The thing I love most about these books is that there aren't sidekicks and characters do not have to constantly intertwine. These two stories are told separately most of the time and that's okay!
Overall this book kept me on the edge of my seat and I finished it overnight. It is action packed, unique and refreshing.
As with the first book in their series I am not sure where to start this review it was so mind blowingly good. Took my breath away in every aspect. These characters in this world like up so bright in my mind it's impossible not to see them, and then continue seeing them long after I have finished the book. I had no need to go back and read the first book to refresh my mind when this second in the series came out because everything was still there in my head. There are a few books along the way that stay with you forever and they don't come along often but Dragon's Breath is one of those series.
It seems pointless to tell you what happens as you need to read the book - everyone needs to read the book!! Bailey is living the apocalypse of civilisation as we know it and it's scary as hell. What do we turn into as humans when threatened? How do we act? What would we do to survive? And what about those that are threatening us? Nothing is as it seems and the world is utterly fascinating. Something I love about Susan Ilene's books is the attention to detail, how many authors think about female sanitary products in a high action, gritty fantasy book? This book is real in every aspect and the characters worm their way into your heart and there they are going to stay.
Can you tell how much I loved this book? Just brilliant, I wish I was more eloquent to describe how this book made me feel. Goosebumps. It's going to be re read many many times.
Dragons and Dragon Slayers how can you go wrong?!?
I was so excited to read this book, although I did not know it was a sequel. I was confused in the first chapter, but instantly caught up and fell into the story. I love following Aiden and Bailey. Aiden is a dragon who has formed an unconventional relationship with the dragon slayer Bailey when his demension collides with earth. The character development throughout the story was strong. Susan Illene does an excellent job developing both the main characters and the side characters. I enjoyed that both of the main characters had separate lives. Often when a story is from multiple perspective you have them following the same story line. In Dancing with Flames you are following two different stories that intermingle and merge in the end.
My favorite character was Aiden. Aiden’s father, the Pendragon, knows he is at the end of his life so he is trying to find a successor before he dies. He gives his children tasks to complete to see which one would earn his vote for the next successor. Aiden is a strong dragon and the weight that is on his shoulders goes far beyond being the next Pendragon of his clan.
The story is fast paced, and it is fun to follow both journeys going from dragon to dragon slayer. Dancing with Flames has action and love, and it keeps you turning the pages frantically to find out what happens next. I cannot wait to see what happens next in this series by Susan Illene!
I feel like this series develops at a steady, good pace. The world-building is clear and established, the romance is a very slow burn, and the action sequences are as tasty as ever. Overall, big thumbs up to Susan and her dragon slayer.
Bailey continues her training with Aidan, who not only wants her as a strong ally to his shifter clan, but is more and more attracted to her on a personal level. Aidan's character has some fantastic development in this book, starting from competing with his brothers and a sister for pendragon's seat where he brokers a peace treaty and helps in a murder investigation, and ending with revealed hidden agenda. I admit that his parts were my favorite, as I find dragon-shifters fascinating.
Bailey was no slouch either. She developed skills with new weaponry, learned to build tolerance to dragons, so she won't attack Aidan and his clansmen on sight and completed an intricate task of bartering with a sorcerer to find kidnapped children.
Both Aidan and Bailey are strong characters with memorable and likeable cast of supporting characters whom I can easily imagine developing their on stories in future books. Definitely, Donar, Conrad and Fibi (sorry if the spelling is wrong as it was on audio) deserve their own books as their characters strongly shine through the narrative.
It was a solid, steady, enjoyable urban fantasy which continues to expand its world-building with each new book. Recommended.

Smart, introverted, feisty and fearless, Bailey continues her dragon slayer duties in this tale by taking on the task of finding missing children for a various parts of Town. Aidin and Phoebe work together to do favors for their father while still keeping both brothers under a careful eye. Now that many know she is a slayer, Bailey has to distance herself from her friends in order not to draw the dragon’s attention as they are getting her scent as her slayer numbers go up. Bailey and Aidin are still feeling strong emotions toward each other and walk a chalk like as any intimacy’s May leave one of them dead.
I enjoyed this book immensely. Bailey really grew as a character and her and Aiden's relationship grew steadily despite them being apart for some of the book. I also enjoyed watching Bailey and Phoebe become better friends. There was also plenty of action and intrigue which made the book interesting.
Good world-building, nice to have a fantasy series that isn't following the same often repeated themes of vampires & werewolves. wish I could rate half-stars. this really felt like a 3.5 stars. Enjoyed it and will likely read the next, but at the same time something about the characters keeps me from loving it.
I really loved this book, probably even more than the first book in the series. Bailey is coming into her own as a force to be reckoned with as Aiden is trying to navigate dragon politics. The action was great, and I really liked getting to know Aiden's family better as well as more about the human's life. This was a great sequel - loved it!
I put off reading this series because I wasn’t ready to commit to 8 books. Now that I’m two books in, I’m sorry that I waited. It’s been an excellent series start. I will follow the author and I’m looking forward to seeing what happens next.
Think Buffy the vampire slayer and then replace that with Bailey the dragon slayer .
Fast paced story telling that hooks you in from start to finish .
Earth is suffering apocalyptic damage after colliding with an other dimension , which allowed the dragons exiled there hundreds of years ago to now seek their vengeance . Humans are suffering , living in enclaves , trying to survive any way they can - BUT children have now started to disappear , taken by a 'green' dragon . Bailey , having discovered that she is immune to dragon fire , has been given training to fight the dragons but also to control her compulsion to attack any dragon no matter the odds . Aiden a different type of dragon - a 'red' dragon shifter , has been training Bailey in secret , it would mean a death sentence if they were discovered . They agree to work together to find the green dragon and rescue the children - but must do so separately at the start . Aiden's father , the Pendragon , is dying and sets his sons and daughter tasks to complete , tasks that will show who is the fittest to lead their clan . Bailey must try to find where the green dragon is keeping the children with the help of Conrad , her back-up in fights, and the people of the enclaves . The conclusion of all the work by different parties to find the children culminates in a battle - red shifter dragons fight side by side with Bailey against the green dragons . Showing that perhaps in the future they might work together to improve the lot of both peoples .
I loved this book , the author manages to give all the characters 'substance' , they all appear to have a place in the story as individuals and by themselves .

Earth collides with another dimension where dragons have been exiled for hundreds of years now the dragons can seek revenge. The dragons have been on earth four months. Bailey is a dragon hunter who is looking for the green dragon who has been taking children. Aidan is a red dragon shifter who has helped Bailey to train on her slaying skills. If Aidan gets caught helping Bailey it would mean he would be put to dearth.. But he secretly agrees to help Bailey find the green dragon that is taking the children. Aidan’s dad is the Pendragon and is dying and his children have tasks to perform to see which is the most fit to lead their clan and take their fathers place. Bailey also has to learn more control ion her urges to kill every dragon she comes across. I didn’t love this story but I didn’t hate it either. It just wasn’t a favorite of mine. I did love how Aidan chances his life to help Bailey find a very bad dragon and hopefully the children he had been taking. I also loved how Aidan cared for her even though he was a dragon shifter and she was human and a dragon slayer. Vut they overcome everything and helped each other. I liked the characters and the plot. This just didn’t WOW me.
This is the 2nd in the series I really love the first one and this just keeps building on a great world and characters while adding a lot of mystery about the future. Can't wait to read the next one coming out later this year. Books 1This review was originally posted on Books In Brogan
3.7 Stars. While I liked the potential in the first book the author didn't do enough world building for me to love it. I figured I'd read this book since I had already picked it up and I wanted to know what happens to Bailey and Aidan.
There still isn't a lot of character development/world building but things have stabilized. The two worlds have collided and everyone is trying to adjust to this new world. Bailey does what she does best killing all the dragons she can find. Aidan doesn't get to see her much since most of his time is spent with dragon politics. As he works to solve his own problems Bailey hunts a dragon that is taking children. What little time they spend together is worth the wait.
This was going to be my last book but I really world like to know what happens between Bailey and Aidan.
Ok. Not as I expected. In fact, I was bored until 50%. The first book was exciting from the beginning. This book was a struggle for me to stay with. I agree with other reviewers that Bailey and Aiden should have spent more time together. The surrounding characters were great. I love Phoebe. Very strong and loving. Their father was an ass. I suspect Zoran and Ruari behaved the way their father did to his siblings. Which is why none of them were there to fight for pendragon. I expect Ruari to die. Such a coward. I just love Conrad. He always has the slayer's back. I'm hoping her father is more present in the next book.
