Holistic Midwifery: A Comprehensive Textbook for Midwives in Homebirth Practice, Vol. 2: Care of the Mother and Baby from the Onset of Labor Through the First Hours After Birth
This volume covers fetal and maternal anatomy relevant to labor and birth; the Cardinal Spiraling Movements of Birth (including summaries of all 8 formal positions for vertex, face, brow and breech presentations) attending both straightforward and complex labors, as well as well-baby and high risk newborn support and transport procedures. It contains 1400 pages of text on labor and birth and is designed to complement other publications by Anne Frye, 8 x 10 format
Anne Frye is a midwife, a midwifery consultant, and author. She writes and publishes textbooks, and she produced a video and accompanying software entitled "Understanding Female Pelvis Anatomy in 3D." She holds an independent study BA degree in Holistic Midwifery and has been a midwife since 1979.
Recommended by my midwife when I wanted a more in-depth resource for baby development while pregnant. Good detailed info on that and a surprisingly wide range of topics which I skimmed through. There is a section on how different cultures think about birth which I found fascinating. Definitely a resource to come back to for detailed yet concise pregnancy information
This second volume in the Holistic Midwifery series is a comprehensive resource for midwives providing care to homebirth mothers and babies. This book covers all aspects of the birth process from labor through the first hours postpartum, including pre-labor assessment, nutrition and hydration during labor, massage and other comfort measures, coping mechanisms for pain management, intrapartum monitoring, newborn assessment, and resuscitation if needed. It also includes information on potential complications that need to be monitored for and managed appropriately. Each chapter includes case studies as well as helpful diagrams and images to further illustrate concepts.
Overall, this book provides a wealth of valuable information from experienced midwives who have been caring for birthing families in the home setting for many years. The authors have done a great job of succinctly summarizing the relevant information in an easy-to-understand and comprehensive manner, making it an invaluable resource for midwives practicing in homebirth settings. I highly recommend this book to any midwife who is looking for a comprehensive guide to attending homebirths. It will be an invaluable addition to your library!
Continuation of volume one, this text covers from onset of labor through the couple of hours after the birth of the baby. What I appreciate most about this book is the depth in which she goes into possible complications and suggestions for them, also gives historical information that you won't find anywhere else that could be helpful if you simply couldn't get to a hospital and had to do something. I take this book with me to every birth and have used it a lot.
Anne Frye has such an approachable style it seems more like learning from the village wise woman than reading a textbook. One star off because some of the sections are in dire need of updating (particularly the one on lesbian parents). But Frye is comprehensive and thorough without being dry like Varney's.
I'm a fan of simply worded textbooks that read as though you're talking to a treasured mentor, so Anne Frye's second volume gets a high rating like her first. This volume is far more complex than the first, while still being perfectly readable. The index is a little clunky and basic topics are sometimes hard to find, but once you do find them they're almost always covered well.
Good reference book for midwifery style care...really the only good textbook that is in line with obstetrics textbooks out there, but from the perspective of midwifery care. This volume covers prenatal care....indepth!!!
Reading this for school. Wow, like 150 pages just on presentations and the spiral descent of the baby! I've finished my first week's reading....only 7 pages, but as always, Anne's writing is very dense and thorough.
