Chippeway Captive

An adventure story for boys.

When your father heads west and suddenly news from his stops, what do you do? Go in search for him, of course. Anyway, that's what Jim Chase does.

The story begins,
At early afternoon of a day in mid May, the year of grace 1827, we at last sighted the lofty white cliffs and green pines of Mackinac Island guarding the narrow passage between the two mighty lakes of Huron and Michigan. It was a happy sight for me, for it meant one more milestone on my great journey from Massachusetts to the trackless wilderness.

Jim immediately falls in with trustworthy comrades, one of whom just happens to be a skilled mountain man named Dave. Jim is a quick learner, and it isn't long before he's pointing out signs to Dave. The adventures are like those that made up the dreams of many young boys. Survival in the wilderness, paddling canoes, shooting wildlife for food, and fighting the "bad guys" (seedy part-French trappers and all Indians).

Yep, as you'd expect from a book written in the 40s (although it reads more like a story from the 20s or 30s) the "Indians" are "cruel Savages," but worthy opponents. I certainly hope that kids would realize that there's much more to the story than the stereotype presented here.

Also as you'd expect, honesty, faithfulness, playing fair, seeking the truth ... parents are reassured that "the reading matter is clean, interesting, inspiring and educational."
