The Vampire Hunter's Academy: The Darkness

Built centuries ago, shortly after the construction of the First Christian Church, The Vampire Hunters Academy is responsible for the training of the world’s best of the those possessing gifts within the realms of the supernatural for use of defending humanity. Situated in Vatican City, the school has been recognized as the Light’s best kept secret in the war against The Darkness. The Academy’s purpose however, is not only to prepare future Guardians for the task of defending humanity against Evil, but to specially train the select for the highest esteem to protect and stand with the Most High’s top weapon known as the Akhkharu Alal, better known as the Huntress. Born every thousand years as humanity’s sole protector against the armies of Darkness, a prophecy long foretold the coming of a new breed of slayers that will soon lead the armies of Light against the Unnamed One. Destiny was written in the name of Sanaya Scott, the newest and most powerful Slayer born in this millennium and the first ever of her kind to be admitted into The Academy. Street smart, independent and a bit of a loner, Sanaya’s abilities are developing too quickly for her Guardians to keep up with. Not to mention the typical teenaged woes of being the new girl on the block, her abilities leave her isolated among her peers as a bit of a freak-with the exception of her best friend, Maya. As more truths are revealed about Sanaya’s future, relationships are created and tested, especially when a Master Vampire decides to try his luck with the school. Sanaya is faced with balancing coming into her own, while trying to protect those she was destined to protect and manage life as teenaged huntress. With the help of Maya, and some new friends, Sanaya learns she does not have to fight the fight against evil alone.

So this was a giveaway book. I can say it was an enjoyable read but some of the slang in it I could do without. I did love the female character though she was tough and grew up with not the greatest role models in parents. She learned at a young age to take care of herself. I appreciate that the author also sent me the second book in the series. I look forward to seeing who the trader is. I feel like we are supposed to think it is King but I am leaning towards someone else. If you are looking for a easy read to take you away to a vampire world I would definitely say give it a go. I am giving it 3 stars due to some of the slang used between the two main characters. But did really enjoy reading it for the most part.

This new writer gave me nothing but LIFE!!!! I made the decision to only read my top 3 genres over this Labor Day Weekend and receiving this recommendation was all the more valuable when it turns out this new writing ingenue is a BEAST with her pen. The characters, Sanaya, Maya, Archer, Eve, Trent, King, Elizabeth, the Guardians, and of course the Vampires worked in tandem to create a tale that kept me completely immersed in the drama as it unfolded. Sanaya was special from the day she was born. Unfortunately she was born to a set of parents who possessed a significant amount of problems and were self-absorbed in their own personal demons almost to the exclusion of their daughter's well-being. Upon hitting puberty Sanaya is faced with even more challenges of attempting to find her way while her senses and abilities beyond human capabilities begin to grow and manifest. It is during this time when she witnesses the horrific death of her mother by her father who had been bitten and turned into a vampire. It is at this point that Sanaya is whisked away from all that she has known only to end up at the Vatican in Rome in a secret academy designed to identify, train, and direct the next batch of Guardians and the Slayer. She quickly learns that she is the all-important slayer and must hone and sharpen her abilities. She meets another girl that was outcast and in similar circumstances upon whom she latches on and they build a bond and friendship that rivals the friendly bonds of others. Maya stands beside and with Sanya through every unexpected and slightly scary event that takes place while they train to become the greatest defense against the demise of the human race. While in school Sanaya is introduced to many different personalities and because of the bullying of specific student Elizabeth Van Helsing, descendent of the Great Van Helsing, vampire hunter, she is many times looked upon as an oddity and ridiculed by her peers. She meets and is completely drawn to the newest enrollee, King. They establish a telepathic link and a bond that will withstand the tests of time(at least in my opinion) is forged. There are many twists, turns, and dramatic events that unfold in this story line. This book in many ways is comparable to the Twilight series and the widely popular 90s hit TV series Buffy The Vampire Slayer; and yet while the similarities will be easily recognizable by anyone familiar with these cult favorites, the fresh face-lift applied by this writing genius will elicit a nostalgic sense of deja vu that will have you anxiously flipping through the pages until you reach the end. This young writer isn't one that I've read before but she has quickly gained my lifelong devotion and appreciation for her fantastic story telling abilities. I was ensnared in her prosaic paranormal web and was not eager to be released once I flipped to the last page!! Kudos young lady!!! With paranormal Romance being one of my all-time favorite genres, I have an extremely low thresh-hold for mediocrity!! You my dear, surpassed and exceeded my expectations and as a result I will be anxiously awaiting your return with the next installment of this cinematic worthy read!!!

I was gifted this book. This was the first book I read that was written by Delizhia Jenkins and I must say it was a great surprise. The story has action non stop and it is a real page turner. I absolutely loved how it all took place. The writing is mature and yet has glimpses of younger years. There is never a boring moment in this book and I can't wait to read book 2 of the series. The characters are all awesome, the good ones like the villains. It was awesome to feel the way Sanaya felt throughout the story as I found myself identifying with many things she went through. This is a must read if you love magic, supernatural abilities, friendships and new found love, oh and the usual bad guys too (vampires, werewolves, demons, etc). Be prepared, you will not be able to put this book down one second once you started. The action starts the minute you start and it only gets better the further you read. You have been warned ;)

Great Story BUT

Fantastic Story full of action and intrigue. It’s a familiar trope but has a lot of potential for shifts and turns so that it isn’t immediately obvious. I would love to see where the story goes BUT, and this is a huge BUT, the editing (if there was any) is the absolute worst I have ever read. Seriously, an inner city High School Sophomore could have done a better job proof reading than was apparently done on this book. Misspelled words were almost a Godsend as entirely missing words (and phrases) were almost as common. Wrong verb tense, abhorrent punctuation and unintelligible sentences made the absolutely ridiculous use of borderline offensive stereotypical slang almost bearable. This book could have been so much better but reading it hurts your IQ.

OMG! I read this fan-freaking-tastic book in record time & did not want to put it down when I had to, then I couldn't wait to get back to it :o lol ... This is one of the best, most intense, heart-pounding must reads, that grabbed me from the start :D Paranormal suspense & romance with vamps, shifters, and other supernaturals, with a fresh, new, unique storyline, awesome & well-defined characters, and great attention to details, also with surprise twists & turns, that kept me glued to & on the edge of my seat! I can honestly recommend this to all fans of fiction especially those who love fantasy and PNR! I am so addicted to this talented author's writing & can't wait to read more :)

Nicely Done

Oh Sanaya, I am loving this character.,faced with death, destruction, and being the One. Sanaya is rising to the challenge, she is naive, vulnerable, and strong all at the same time. These traits made me like the kid even more. Sanaya and King will make an interesting couple, both have a destiny already determined. I'm wondering how this young couple will handle fighting demons, vampires, werewolves, and Master Vampires and still navigate or build on their guardian bond.
This was the first book that I've been able to complete by this author and it was great. I have to get book two of the series

I got a free copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review :) I have to say that I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this shorter novel :) it's the beginning of a series, and I am definitely curious about what will happen next :) so how about I will tell you a bit more about this world, and the main character, and then we will skip to my overall thoughts and feelings :) since it was a bit shorter book, my review won't be too long as well... trust me, a lot of things happened in it, and I don't want to spoil them for you :)

This book is set in our world, or should I say, an alternate version of it, with vampires, werewolves and all sorts of other creatures... tha majority of people don't know about any of them, but there is an elite group, called Guardians, who protect us all... and once a while, there is a Slayer born... a woman, who is the most powerful of them all, to protect us from Darkness... Sanaya is the current Slayer... we meet her in the prologue, when she has no idea who she is, and then certain things happen, and we skip ahead about a year, to see her already in the Academy :) then we start our journey, and that is all I can say abut what happens in this book... because it is a crazy ride... ;) surprising twists and turns, introducing all sorts of different characters... you'll see for yourselves :)

All in all I gave this book 4 stars :) it was a really good beginning of a series, introducing the world and several key players in it :) I definitely adored Eve the most :) she is a very unique character, but I don't want to spoil you the reasons why ;) I loved how she was the voice of reason so many times :) there is of course quite a lot of others, but they appear throughout the whole story, and you don't always know from the start who will be important ;) Sanaya was an interesting main character... I was afraid that because she's 17, she would annoy me with her immature character... there is a reason why I usually don't read books about such young people ;) but most of the time, she acted very maturely for her age ;) the writing style was good and interesting, although I feel like it could really benefit from editing / polishing it a bit more... but I was intrigued enough by the whole premise to decide to continue on with this series :) yes, there was some drama and angst, but come on... they are still teenagers after all ;) but the further we got into the book, the less it occured, so that's a plus in my notes ;) I see a lot of potential for future stories, and definitely have some theories of my own about certain characters, but we shall see if I'm correct in the future ;) if you are looking for a different read, for a paranormal story that will surprise you, definitely check this one out ;)

XOXO

This one is a good one.

This Writer is getting better and better at her craft. Her character development is seemingly effortless... Sanaya is live, believable and engaging. And the development of the supporting characters comes on line smoothly and with little effort. This book one offers some really intriguing tidbits that make the reader go hmmm too...
I don't like to write about too many details because I dislike spoilers. But I have to say I'm really tempted. If you like vampire YA with marbling of urban twist to add spice... this one is well worth a read... In fact... give ANY of this Writer's books a read and you'll become a huge fan. This reader is eagerly awaiting the next book by this author.

I read this looking for another LA Banks well my I didn’t find her. What I did find was a enjoyable read that keep me interested throughout the book. The characters were very interesting with room for growth. Right now I think this book is geared towards YA but that’s not a bad thing as they’re some great YA reads out there. I’ll continue to read the series watching Sanaya, King, Maya and the other young Hunters as they grow into adults. The Guardians are exciting also. All in All I enjoyed it and will continue to follow Delizhia and her Hunters. BTW very little gore for those like me who’re scaredy-cats.
