Ever wondered why you just HAVE to make something, anything, or you will just burst?
Artists are born, not made. And if you yearn to create, that makes you an artist, no matter your medium. Photography, painting, performance art, writing, singing, or fashion, all are forms of expression of the creative soul.
Often, creative people are not encouraged to pursue their heart’s desires by the world at large. They end up frustrated, depressed, or sad because they feel they cannot share their gifts with the world. They get blocked, give up too soon, or worse yet, fail to ever start what they yearn to make. And that’s a downright shame.
The World Needs Your Art is a friendly guide to unlocking unlimited creativity while developing your style and learning to never be blocked for very long again by tapping into that innate gift called imagination.
In this book, author and full-time artist Danielle E. Fournier teaches you how to access your inner wisdom to begin creating the art you are so ready to see come to life with stories, fun exercises, and some gentle soul-searching,
I checked this book out because I love reading books about creativity, but didn’t expect much since there are so few reviews on Goodreads. I would recommend this to any artist/creative thinker.
I really enjoyed this book and found that I use similar techniques. I love searching for great quotes and they have always inspired me. Quotes give your mind substance and reason to hold on to your passions and interests. Quotes develop opinions and paradigms.
If I find myself in a block all I need to do is scroll Pinterest or look through an art book/magazine to find my flow again. People inspire people, and we should all look for those sources of inspiration.
Parts of this book remind me of Austin Kleon’s book Steal Like an Artist (highly recommend). Our art is never 100% original because it’s a giant conglomeration of artwork we’ve seen and been inspired by in our lives. This is true with all art: painting, dance, acting, songwriting, poetry, music, writing, etc. What makes our art unique is that it is OUR art. It’s OUR mind projected onto OUR medium. Only we can create OUR art.
For me, I feel most inspired when I’m creating for other people. This is something I want to learn to hone in and learn to create for myself, for other people. When you put art into this world it’s not just for you. It’s for everyone else to see your interests from your perspective. Art creates connections.
I think one point I don’t agree with is that artists are born not made. I disagree with this because I didn’t not come out of the womb holding a crayon and I was never destined to be an artist. I worked at it. I worked hard to develop my skill sets and techniques. Blood, sweat, and tears, let me tell you... college was rough. It’s taken my entire life to get to this point of skill and not for lack of trying. It was not destiny.
Talent, in general, is taught and nurtured from a young age. There may be certain biological advantages some people have over others when it comes to skill/talent (such as basketball players), but this does not mean that someone with a biological disadvantage can’t find the passion and time to learn.
The audio book was read by a very masculine voice, and the text felt very feminine, quite jarring. This book also felt like a long advert for her website. I can save you reading the whole thing, the majority of the advice was "faff around and find out".
