Family Life: A Simple Guide to the Biblical Family

Rate this book
Every Christian family is like a garden, which sometimes grows greener and sometimes gets a little brown around the edges. How green is your family garden? This little book offers a big picture overview of the Christian family, complete with biblical principles, practical suggestions, discussion questions, and helpful resources for further study. It is a culmination of wisdom from multiple generations, intended for the restoration of healthy family gardens in this postmodern wasteland of disintegrated family life.
Almost every chapter of the book recovers something that was largely lost in the last century—family discipleship, family economy, family honor, family relationships, family culture, family freedoms, family worship, and family life. Author Kevin Swanson warns of the toxic influences that threaten the family garden, and guides parents in cultivating their own family gardens and yielding a great spiritual crop.

This book has some very conservative elements. But, ultimately, I found it helpful to really see the state of family in America and what are some practical ways to root deeper in God’s word.

Family Life by Kevin Swanson is an encouraging read for the christian family. I read it through by myself and am now going back through it with my husband. The wisdom in between the covers of the book is at times convicting. I have had to repent of a lack of sincerity on my part. It's one thing to say we believe something and another to actually follow through with that profession. Honestly this book came at the right time.

Kevin starts the book of with an amazing introduction. In it, he talks about the difference between the world we live in and the world Laura Ingalls lived in. They're not that far apart as far as timing but they are vastly different. He also talks about the tragic breakdown of fatherhood which lead to the tragic breakdown of the family. Parents, both moms and dads, are so important to the family. The family is important to the culture, economics, etc. This is one introduction you will not want to miss.

Kevin goes on to talk about the christian family. He reminds the parents that their own salavation will not save their children. Salvation is all of God. However, we have a responsibility to bring our children up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. He discusses the roles of mom and dad. Both are equal in Christ but not in their God given tasks. Other things that he discusses are family devotions, discipleship and character training, the family economy, honor, culture, education, and the roles of the family, church, and state. This book is a must for families desiring to live a godly life and for parents striving to raise godly children. Kevin shares ideas that he has incorporated into his own family which makes it easier to get started on actiing out what you have learned. My favorite advice Kevin gives to parents is a simple recipe.
"It goes like this: Step 1. Get down on your face before God. Step 2. Cry out in true sincerity, "God have mercy! Oh God have mercy! Please have mercy on me and my family."

There are 9 chapters total. Each one is jam packed with biblical wisdom. At the end of each chapter you'll find a list of questions asking what you have learned and how you are doing in regards to already implanting biblical parenting into your children's life. It was a convicting read for me and I look forward to going through it a second time.

Matthew 15: 5-6. . .What if we asked OURSELVES whether or not we have made the commandments of God to no effect because of our own traditions, like the Pharisees?
Do we lack Biblical conviction because we have gone the way of culture, having become secularized worshipers of "expert" driven programs (government AND church)?
This excellent book, full of grace and truth, is a short reminder that we must be humble before God in all things, especially in creating a Christian home. It's advice is for any and all Christians.
Swanson's definition of education is the best I've seen: Preparation of a child intellectually, emotionally, physically, and spiritually for life and for eternity.
