Georgiana Darcy, Matchmaker

Rate this book
After Fitzwilliam Darcy surprised his sister, Georgiana, at Ramsgate and learned she was being tricked into eloping with his childhood friend, George Wickham; he took a most unprecedented path. Deciding Georgie was unprepared for such circumstances due to their society's preference to keep young ladies innocent and unknowing of the ways of the world, he chose to enlighten her. He began discussing things with her and educating her on matters that others may feel were not for the eyes or ears of a lady. He wanted her to be prepared when she came out in society and not be susceptible to the fortune hunters. What he did not realize was that she would use her new found knowledge upon him.

Bronwen Chisholm was raised in Central Pennsylvania, the youngest of four sisters. Though she was not introduced to Jane Austen's work until later in life, she grew up reading the Bronte sisters, Gone With the Wind, and other classics as well as watching vintage Hollywood movies. Her love of books and literature almost led her to a career as a librarian. Instead, life and love carried her to Virginia where she took a position as a state employee and began raising her family.

As her children grew and became involved in their own interests, Bronwen returned to her love of the written word. No longer content to simply read it, she began writing. Though the first attempts ended up on a shelf for now, she would not be discouraged. Deciding to set aside her Women's Fiction and Suspense Romance for a time, she finally became a published author with her Pride and Prejudice Alternatives. Bronwen was thrilled with the acceptance of her first offering, The Ball At Meryton: A Pride and Prejudice Alternative Novella. She takes great pleasure in searching for potential "plot twists" and finding the way back to a happy ending. Her current work is told entirely from Georgiana Darcy's point of view and has been well received.

Her love of writing has led her to several writing groups, and she is currently serving as the Vice President of The Riverside Writers.

In Georgiana Darcy, Matchmaker, we see a story where Mr. Darcy's beloved little sister travels to Hertfordshire to speed things up for our beloved couple. I've always loved what-if stories involving Georgiana, so I just had to read this! It was also interesting to see a story written in Georgiana Darcy's POV.

It had its charms, but if you're a bit of a stickler for proper regency etiquette as I am (not that I claim to have extensive knowledge of regency etiquette), some of the scenes may bother you. Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth held hands in public, he kissed her hands, and was more forward than what was considered proper, especially since there was no courtship or engagement in place. In Regency times, unwed ladies would only have the opportunity to have deliberate physical contact with the opposite sex through dancing. Someone as dignified and proper as Mr. Darcy wouldn't dare do anything as forward to a woman he is not promised to, no matter how strong his feelings.

Instead of swooning because of the feels, I would only think about how Darcy would never have done what he did and such. I wasn't able to get attached to Georgiana and Captain Jacobs' relationship(?). It felt like their arc was forced into a story with a few subplots already trying to steal the spotlight (e.g. Darcy and Elizabeth, the Wickham predicament).

Lydia and Mrs. Bennet were more intolerable in this story than in P&P, and Lydia caused more mischief and was more unrepentant than the original. I did like Kitty and Georgiana's budding friendship, as much as I liked Georgiana and Darcy's relationship.

The story had potential, but sadly it fell a little flat for me.

This is a unique P&P what if that puts one of the least appreciated characters front and center. So many authors seem at a loss at what to do with poor Georgiana; either she is literally lifted from Mrs. Reynold's description, she sings and plays all day, almost a parody of Miss Bingleys Netherfield set down of Lizzy, “Georgiana Darcy ... a great pianist, and has no pleasure in anything else.” Or she is made into a spoiled monster who only seeks to punish everyone.

In this clever story Georgiana decides she must go to Netherfield to make sure that her brother doesn't bollock up (my language not the author's) his budding relationship with Elizabeth Bennet. Of course we all know that no matter when she arrived she would be a day late and and a £ short. But poor Georgiana manages to arrive the same day that Darcy sees Wickham talking to the Bennets in Meryton. And Darcy wants her gone, like turn the coach around and go back to London, but Georgiana is good a convincing her brother should should stay, at least long enough to meet Miss Elizabeth Bennet. He agrees and they do then she manages to extend the visit, slowly but surely until she is staying for Mr. Bingley's ball. She spends a lot of time at Longbourn with her companion and her brother. She works to make sure Darcy apologizes to Lizzy for the “Not handsome enough" slight and that Lizzy learns about her brother's good traits. She also reveals details about what happened at Ramsgate and how wicked Wickham is. Darcy & Lizzy convey to Mr. Bennet that he is a man not to be trusted. Kitty discovers that being Lydia's aide to camp lacks reward. Mary decides that no matter what Mrs. Bennet thinks she is going to to secure Mr. Collins.

On the night of the Netherfield ball, things go pear shaped when both Miss Mary King and Miss Lydia Bennet disappear and Mr. Wickham is suspected to be involved. And what follows was so glacially paced and tedious that if was as if the book had changed plot from a romance to a mystery. It allowed Lizzy and Jane and to some degree Georgie and Kitty to shine but it go more absurd and ridiculous by the moment. Even Lady Catherine showed up. Part of this is to introduce us to a friend of Col. Fitzwilliam; Captain Jacobs the second son of an Earl, who will figure into her future but I was rather worn out by all the running around and when all was said and done it was less than 24 hours but seriously it felt longer.

I liked the way that Georgiana, Kitty and even Mary were developed as characters. I like the insight into Darcy's and Lizzy's childhoods. Lizzy relates a surprising tale which explains, without justifying, her mother's apparent disdain for her second eldest. Also that this Mr. Bennet while not a powerhouse is much less indolent and sarcastic as in the last few books I have read.

What I could have skipped, the epilogue set 4 years in the future. Especially because the author decided that Col. Fitzwilliam would be interested in Charlotte Lucas, you see Mary got her man, but Charlotte would now be one and thirty, which is a serious spinster.

It takes courage to grow up and become who you really are. ~e.e. cummings

Our Dear Georgiana -- her own story!

After being beaten down by the events at Ramsgate, Georgiana seizes her opportunity to help her beloved brother in his courtship (before he had realized he was in a courtship) and thus begins her recovery.

A wonderful story with Georgiana continuing to make errors and yet reaching maturity, told entirely in Georgiana's voice.

Move Over, Emma Woodhouse, There Is a New Matchmaker In Town!

TYPE OF AUSTENESQUE NOVEL: A Pride and Prejudice Variation from the perspective of Georgiana Darcy

TIME FRAME: Begins during the Bennet sisters stay at Netherfield Park through a few weeks later + epilogue

MAIN CHARACTERS: Georgiana Darcy, Mr. Darcy, the Bennet family, the Bingley family, George Wickham, Mary King, Mrs. Annesley, Captain Jacobs (original character)

WHY I WANTED TO READ THIS NOVEL:

- A new author for me that has already published 3 previous works.
- I love the idea of Georgiana playing matchmaker for her brother.
- I sampled the first 2 chapters and found the premise engaging and our heroine charming! I definitely wanted to read more!

WHAT I LOVED:

- Georgiana and Her Machinations: While reading her brother’s letters from Netherfield, Georgiana detects the true leanings of her his heart and knows he is determined to ignore and suppress his developing feelings for Elizabeth Bennet. Believing is clearly unable to manage his own affairs, Georgiana sets of for Hertfordshire with all possible haste with her companion, Mrs. Annesley, in tow. She plans to meet Elizabeth Bennet and find ways to make her big brother realize his heart. Even though Mr. Darcy is happy to see Georgiana, he intends to send her back to London (because of you-know-who!), but Georgiana keeps on finding reasons to stay! I loved seeing this less timid version of Georgiana. After her experience in Ramsgate it seems Mr. Darcy spent a lot of time opening up and talking with her, and it has helped her heal emotionally.

- Georgiana and Her Relationships: This story is told only from Georgiana’s point-of-view and it was delightful to see so many of the important relationships she develops with other characters in the story. I loved the ease and esteem between Georgiana and Mrs. Annesley, the sweet big sister/little sister rapport that developed with the two eldest Bennet sisters, and the fast friendship that formed with Kitty Bennet. I also loved seeing how Georgiana was wise to Lydia’s and Miss Bingley’s ways and wasn’t one to shy away from their strong personalities and unkind opinions. I should also make mention of Georgiana’s exchanges with a certain military man…what a delightful and unexpected surprise! It truly was wonderful to see Georgiana fleshed-out and maturing into such a strong and perceptive woman.

- Sweet, Humorous, and Tense: I love that there is a little bit of everything in this tale. It was sweet to witness Darcy and Elizabeth fall in love through another person’s eyes. Georgiana is very in-tune to her older brother’s heart and understands his nervous habits and discomfits. But at the same time, she was pushy and clever, and I loved the laugh out loud moments when Darcy would get tired of Georgiana’s meddlesome ways! And just when we think things might easily fall into place someone goes missing at the Netherfield Ball and there is danger, distress, and a whole lot of drama!

WHAT I WASN’T TOO FOND OF:

- Some Small Quibbles: While there is so much I enjoyed in the composition and unique viewpoint of this story, I did miss seeing Darcy and Elizabeth together more towards the end. I understand with Georgiana being our eyes and ears the author is limited in what she can show us, but I guess I wanted to see a little bit more of their HEA as well as Georgiana’s. And in general I found myself wishing things resolved a little more leisurely at the end. I enjoyed the epilogue, but would have loved a little more resolution before then.

CONCLUSION:

This is my first novel by Bronwen Chisholm and it only leads me to want to read some more! I love the unique perspective of this story and how the author developed Georgiana’s character! She could definitely give Emma Woodhouse a run for her money (as we see in the charming epilogue!) Ms. Chisholm’s enchanting and sensitive tale is one which will keep Pride and Prejudice fans “agreeably engaged!”

First person point of view

The first person narrator is Georgiana who travels to Hertfordshire to facilitate her brother's lovelife. She fancies herself a matchmaker of sorts. There is some trouble with Wickham, because of course there is, and Georgiana has to cope with males who want to restrict her movements for her own safety. This was quite nice.

Georgiana, like Emma

Georgiana has learnt from her mistake and apparently talked to her brother about life and men.
However, it seems that she believes that she can help him. She goes to Netherfield to get his brother and Elizabeth together but there's some drama too. Who is guilty of that? Wickham, of course. Even if he does not appear much he is again the villain.

This is a Georgiana Darcy story. Everyone else are side characters. It is narrated from Georgiana's POV. Georgiana learns from her brother's letters about his interest in Eluzabeth and his disinclination to act on it. So, Georgiana takes it upon herself to stop her brother from making a big mistake. The alternate path has romance, friendship, imprudence, adventure and plays out quite interestingly.

Wonderful book from Bronwen Chisolm

This was fun all around. I enjoyed seeking Georgiana having friends everywhere. Poor girl was always so lonely. The plot was different, always a good thing. An awesome reqd!

I'm struggling with a review for this. The story begins when Georgiana receives a letter from her brother in which she instantly recognises his interest in Elizabeth and that he is going to run from her. So, she decides to play match maker... and to her credit, she does beautifully. I really liked her. The book is written from her perspective in the first person, which is unusual but actually very interesting. The first part of the book is about the developing relationship between Darcy and Elizabeth. The second is about a scandal at the Netherfield Ball involving Mary King, Lydia and Wickham and getting this resolved.

I loved the first half of this book. Georgina meeting Elizabeth without a plan is just lovely. Her interaction with Lydia is brilliant. Lydia and Mrs Bennet are so ridiculous I can't help but like them....

But... things started to go wrong for me following the ball. Mr Bingley has to leave with his sisters. As a reader, I wanted him to stay. Also, it felt that was too much repetition of the issue of the vulnerable little ladies disobeying orders and going out from Netherfield. This part of the book was too long for me and I didn't feel added a great deal. This is the second book I've read by this author and my biggest complaint is the same as with the previous book... as a reader I felt a bit cheated by not being there to witness the happy ever after. The end of the issue at Netherfield is the end of the story followed by an Epilogue 4 years later. I am not a fan of the 'years later' Epilogue. I want to read about how we get there, not see what happened afterwards.

There are lots of breaches in propriety, but I'll be honest, I could overlook them because I enjoyed the story. It felt like there should be another of these books, the same story but from the perspective of Darcy or Elizabeth as the reader misses too much. I want to know what happened in the still room! All in all I did enjoy it, but felt quite let down at the end.

A lovely story when you are in the mood for something sweet and romantic, clean and whithout angst.
Georgiana receives a letter from her brother while he his staying at Netherfield. She suspects that he is falling in love with Elizabeth but plans to run from his growing attachment. Georgiana goes to Netherfield to help the romance allong. Wickham makes his appearance and an elopment takes place but not according to canon. Worthwhile!

Wonderful

I like the JAFF books wherein Georgiana Darcy is allowed to have a personality, and to have an impact on the plot. This situation is post-Ramsgate, and as the book summary indicates, Darcy has wisely decided to educate Georgiana about Wickham's worthlessness, and about such men and their schemes in general. Rather than sheltering her in the maddening way he usually does, he thinks to arm her with knowledge, and trust in her intelligence. Bravo! Darcy leaves Georgiana in the capable hands of Mrs Annesley, and he goes to Hertfordshire to help Bingley learn estate management.

Georgiana picks up on the name Elizabeth Bennett in her brother's letters, as well as some hints about his intention to interfere in Bingley's growing attachment to Jane Bennett, and she decides that she now needs to be looking out for her brother, and prevent him from messing up his love life and that of his friend. She packs up Mrs Annesley and heads to Netherfield Park, and begins her campaign to direct her brother's love life. Of course, Wickham is there in the militia, and that creates a whole slew of complications.

The story is charmingly told, and the romance is lovely. Miss Darcy is very persistent, and she's quite adorable. The book is presented completely from her first person POV, so we're privy to all of her hopes and fears, her regrets, her insecurities, and her need for love and approval. She's a young woman on the cusp of adulthood, and it's wonderful to watch her grow and learn.

I deducted a star for a couple of reasons. One was the several misspellings of words that are homophones. The other reason was my impatience with characters who are supposed to be intelligent, but they do stupid things over and over again. This was true of Georgiana, Darcy and Elizabeth, and I felt a sense of disappointment in an otherwise great story whenever this happened.

The book is well written and well edited. I recommend it highly.

3.5 rounded up to 4

An easy fun read but fell a little short. Too many scenarios that weren't true to the Regency era. Since we were reading from Georgianna's view, we didn't get the romance that makes JAFF fans devour JAFF books. Maybe had Georgianna's romance been a bit more detailed it would have made up for the Lack of Darcy & Elizabeth's romance. Mrs. Bennet and Lydia were portrayed a little sillier, meaner, vindictive than I like. I also found the ending a tad rushed and way out of character for the regency era. Georgiana & Lizzy would never have gone to the scene ... no spoilers here. Still a fun read, just didn't wow me or leave wanting for more.

A very lovely, nice story. I knocked off a star only because it is *only* told from Miss Darcy’s POV. Not Elizabeth or Darcy’s or even in third person. Therefore, Elizabeth and Darcy’s romance is only seen as from Miss Darcy’s view and we don’t get a full understanding of all the interactions between them (since Miss Darcy cannot be there all the time or always within their hearing). You get more of Miss Darcy’s romance than D&E’s romance :(
This book would be much improved if it could show us more of the interactions between D&E and how their love blossomed and how they overcame their pride/prejudice.

Loved the first person narrative

I enjoyed this book more than any other I have read from this author. There are only two issues, though others may not agree. First, there were too many characters and situations that did not have a resolution either in the final chapters or the epilogue. Second, there were a number of distracting errors that were missed in the editing. Despite these issues, the book is recommended as a good choice to escape from the stressful environment we are experiencing at this time.

A Wonderful Georgiana Perspective
I loved this first person account by Georgiana. I also enjoyed the the fact that she wasn’t her usual shy and timid self, although she wasn’t entirely the opposite; she did still have shy moments but overcame them. I liked that she was resolved to speak out when she felt she was right. Dialogue was good among the main characters. A really nice story. Nicely done. Highly recommend.

What if after reading the letters from her brother, Georgiana Darcy decides to travel to Netherfield and meet Elizabeth Bennet. Obviously it doesn't take her long to realise that Elizabreth doesn't like her brother. So what can she do about it. And there is the mayhem caused by Wickham to contend with.
An enjoyable story.

Alright

A little too much back and forth in the later chapters for me. Plus, o think the blurb describing the story was way off. I'm not wild about books where secondary characters are the focus.

A surprisingly adventurous Georgiana

A nice combination of romance, angst, adventure, and humor as Georgiana stirs up the action at Netherfield just before the ball. Excellent writing, creative plotting, and good editing.

This is more of a 3.5 for me. It started out great! The middle turned very slow and then the end kind of petered out and lost stream.
I did appreciate the writing and very few grammer/editing issues.

Georgie's POV

Loved this story! Ms Chisholm's masterful storytelling was effortless and lacked the contrived angst that one sees in so many JAFF stories. This is a wonderful story of Georgie's growth as she humorously tried to bring about E and D's HEA while unintentionally bringing about her own. Loved Wickham's comeuppance!

Georgiana - All grown up

I love the way Ms. Chisholm used a new heroine - one Ms, Darcy , I smiled I giggled a lot and had the requisite angst . She showed us all that our little Georgie or Poppet can still be a young girl with womanly wisdom. I simply loved this book .

I read this in installments before it was published on BeyondAusten.com. It was a fun story told for several view points (Georgiana, Elizabeth, Darcy...). I believe she may have changed the view to only through Georgiana's eyes, which I think could help make it less confusing. It was a fun read.
